Why do vector shapes in scaled smart objects blur?

This remains a point of frustration.
Why does converting a vector shape to a smart object in Photoshop mean that it's then treated as a bitmap and blurs when scaled up?
If i paste the same vector shape into Illustrator and then back into Photoshop as a smart object it then behaves correctly, and remains sharp.
See the image for example of what i mean. Left is the master shape, centre is it converted into a smart object in Photoshop, right pasted to and from Illustrator. These were then scaled 300% resulting in the centre one blurring.
I don't really want to have to invovle Illustrator in this way and keep all my vector work in Photoshop now it has the tools to do so, but this issue creates me a lot of extra work.
Or am i doing something wrong?
Rob

Smart Object layers are transform to other sizes through interpolating the pixels rendered for the embedded object not be using vector graphics on the embedded object.. If your resize resizes the pixel count way un the image will become soft.  Yoy can try seting your Photoshop Default interpolation setting to other setting then Adobe default Bicubic Automatic to something like plain bicubic which IMO is a better general purpose option then Bicubic Automatic.
You can also open the embedded object by double clicking  the smart layers smart object icon in the layers palette. Once opened in Photoshop resize the vector graphic using Image size and save  the embedded vector object larger. Photoshop will update the smart object layers content then.

if i update a smart oject, the mask snaps to the shape of the smart object.
this is super inconvenient if i've masked a shadow or other feathered object, when the mask clips to the the shape, it peaks around the edges of the newly cropped mask. and i have to go back in and refine the mask further, but elegantly removing the hard line edge is a royal pain in the ***.
    why does this happen?
this example is in CS5 on OS X. this same thing occurs in CC.
i can't believe this inconvenient flaw is still around. even further, i can't believe there are no other posts regarding this issue.
am i missing a preference that turns this "feature" off?

  • Why does the color of a smart object differ from the actual shape that it was made from?

I have some smart objects in a file that I've been working on. For example, I have a simple replay button shape. But, for some reason the color of the smart object differs from the actual color of the shape. In other words, if I sample the color of the smart object it has a hex code of ae7f2c (image1). But if I double click into the smart object to see the actual shape color the hex code is correct: a37e2c (image 2). It's a very slight shift, but causing me to go off brand colors for a client that I am working for. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for your help.

  • Black Edges Around Scaled Smart Objects

    Hey folks,
I've checked around and haven't really found a good solution for this, hoping somebody can help me out.  I have a smart object with transparency that looks great at 100%, as soon as I scale it down I start getting black lines around the edges and a "bevel and emboss" type effect around the edges.  I DON'T want to scale down the contents of the smart object, that's the whole point of the smart object, to retain resolution.  The "anti-alias" checkbox in the transform panel is disabled and can't be checked.  I'm using Photoshop CC 2015.   Please help as this has been driving me nuts for months.  Thanks!

You are correct. I tried this in CS6, and the drop shadow causes the downscale algorithm to add an ugly dark border. I tried changing the image interpolation in the General options, but that has seemingly no effect at all.
Under circumstances it looks quite terrible, and the result becomes unusable for serious work. The only way to circumvent this is to remove the drop shadow in the SO, and apply the effect instead on the SO itself.
*edit* Out of curiosity, I also tested this in Photoline with cloned instanced layers (comparable to a SO in Photoshop), and there are no issues.

  • Vector Smart Object Text - P'shop

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to make a text layer in photoshop and convert to a smart vector object, but it only gives me an option to convert to smart object, as opposed to vector smart object. The bad point about this is that the text becomes rasterised when exported to EPS or PDF (same with vector shapes within a smart object), unlike a regular vector layers which output correctly.
Is there anything im missing out on, or do I have to revert to importing all text from illustrator and set up my smart vectors like that?
    Thanks

  • Can't warp pasted AI vector Smart Object using Free Transform in PS CS6

    Hi
I pasted a vector object into PS CS6 (13.0.1 x32) today directly from Illustrator CS6 (16.0.1 x32), and selected "Paste as Smart Object" (Windows XP Pro SP3).
I then tried to warp the pasted object using the Free Transform tool by dragging one of the corner handles with CTRL held down (Windows).
This usually warps\distorts the object, but instead, this launched a skew operation.
If I paste as Shape Layer or as Pixels then apply Free Transform, <Ctrl + corner handle drag> performs a warp\distort operation.
Also, if I rasterise the pasted AI object, and then convert to a Smart Object I can warp\distort.
Is it not possible to paste an Illustrator vector in as a Smart Object, and then warp\distort it directly using this technique?
    Thanks for your help.
    Richard

Your right in that on a pasted vector smart one can't warp, distort or perform perspective transforms.
One workaround would be to right click on the vector smart object layer in the layers panel and
    choose convert to smart object.
It depends on what your object is, but you'd probably get better quality from a pasted shape or path, but then you won't be able to open the object
    back in illustrator from photoshop.

  • Vector smart object from AI is blurry

I am storing design elements as Vector Objects in Illustrator so that I can update them quickly when needed. The issue is that they vector objects, when viewed inside of photoshp, are quite a bit more blurry than the photoshop equivalent. Any ideas why?
I understand that the Smart Object is rasterized. Do I need to do something to my photoshop document to view it in its final rendered state? Photoshop elements are rasterized as well, so i am not sure what is going on.
In the attached pic, the top element is from illustrator, while the bottom is the same thing made inside photoshop. thanks.

thanks for the reply. My document is 320x240 because that will be the final UI size.  I made sure both documents are 320x240.  The issue is that the native photoshop element is more fine RELATIVE to the illustrator file.  They are both 320x240, so they should both look the same, right?
In the photoshop file I also had a specific image size of something like 3.5 inches by X.X inches, so the actual pixel ratio is 70.5 i think.  I could not find out how to specify the image size (in inches) for the illustrator file, so that document is actually be 72 pixels.  Perhaps this is part of the issues. However, by this rational the illustrator file should be more fine, not less...

  • As a user of Extract, I would like to have the ability to open/access assets and information contained within smart objects or linked layers. Is this possible?

    Problem:
In Extract ( Extract for PSD ) a user is unable to access assets or information from smart objects or linked layers.
    Usage:
Smart Objects/Linked Layers are useful for templated web workflows
@Sectioning content allows for a holistic view with access to granular information
    Possible Solution(s):
Could we create a link between to cloud files.
Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload
Could we create a drop menu like the layer comps that includes related files

    Hello Martin,
Our current support in Extract for Smart Objects includes showing them in the file, and using them on the backend when you request your layer(s) to be scaled while exporting (i.e., when scaling up, the highest quality image is used).  We also display the colors, fonts and gradients from the included Smart Objects in the Extract Styles panel.
We have considered providing a way to open Smart Objects from within Extract, and could use some feedback from you on how this user experience would work best for you. Would you prefer option a) or b) below, and why?
    a) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in the current browser window, replacing your current view of the PSD.
    b) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in a new browser window, which receives focus (is the frontmost browser tab/window).
Also, if you tried to open a Linked Smart Object when the linked file is not available, what would you expect to happen?
Would you describe in more detail what you mean by: "Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload?" and how you'd use this feature?

  • How to save properly Smart Object?

    Hello!
I've got a file where I have 2 groups of layers (SET1 SET2)  (the first one is duplicated and made -100% (minus 100%)  width - which effects with horrizontal mirror of the first one). SET1 have texts, and as you may guess the mirrored groups of layers (SET2) has texts mirrored which I need to make readible (revert them back). That's why I made text layers as Smart Object and when I open this object I can rotate text back, but saving the Smart Object and returning back to the project gives me proper text on SET2 but rotated again SET1. I guess the Smart Object's in both sets are somehow related to each other. Every time I change something in one make an impact on the second. I noticed that even I save my Smart Object with some new name, to the directory I created for the project, it doesn't seem project choose that one in the project directory, but one from TEMP folder in windows root system. I thought to name them separately and load them to loose that relativeness. But I try and I try I do not know how to do it, how to make them independent.
    Any ideas?

//I had to use Smart Object as Layers are transformed with Perspecitve transform tool, and vector objects (like text) can not be perspective transformed...and I can not in fact rasterize those Smart Objects as the project is a template to edit by others. If I rasterize them anybody could not change text layers anymore...
I am getting to be sure, that's immpossible:/

omg, somehow I did it. It seems that 'New Smart Object by Copy' breaks that relativness, but I am not quite sure as I tried to did it before withou success. Anyway, I am on the track again:)

  • Open as Smart Object as Layers in Photoshop?

I apologize if this has been addressed already, but I am looking for a way to open Smart Objects as LAYERS.  I do compositing work and would like to retain as much information as possible by using Smart Objects PRIOR to going into Photoshop.  My current workflow is to highlight the photos in Lightroom CC > Open as Smart Object in Photoshop CC > Manually Drag layers from each open file in Photoshop to main PSD.
Edit - Opening as Layers in Photoshop then applying the Camera Raw Filter is not a good work around, information is lost.

    davepinminn wrote:
I must still be doing something wrong here..............
You have the wrong expectation—namely because you don't grasp the concept. A smart object is not a linked file.  It's a new file all on its own (in PSB format) with no connection to the original file at all.
    davepinminn wrote:
…I can open my raw (.dng) into Photoshop as a smart object.  And in PS, I can open the smart object into ACR.  Works fine.  And I can change stuff.  For example, if I change the exposure from -.25 to +.20, it changes perfectly in PS, as I'd expect.  But, I'm still not getting the changes back to the original raw (.dng) file…
There is no reason why the changes made to a Smart Object oject should be refleftef to a totally unrelated file.
    davepinminn wrote:
…Do I need to do something different to get the changes back to the original file…
Yes. you have to go back to that original file and apply the changes directly to it.  In a previous post, Jeff Schewe told you of a shortcut to achieve that:
    Jeff Schewe wrote:
When you are in the Camera Raw SO with ACR open, go to the main flyout menu and select Export settings to XMP. This will write the new image settings from the SO to the xmp metadata. Then in Lightroom, select Read metadata from file in the main Metadata menu. That will bring in all the settings of the raw SO back into Lightroom. So, while not automatic, it's not as bad as writing down the settings and entering them by hand.

  • Smart Objects - File size issues

    Hey All,
The Question: Not sure if this question has been answered elsewhere. But when using a nested smart object (meaning a smart object within a smart object) Photoshop CS5 doesn't display the correct file size (at bottom left) or seem to account for the nested smart object file size.  Is there a "setting" I’m missing to accurately display what the true file size is?
The Problem: Using multiple nested smart objects that I have reduced the size of my image to be 260x200 for web export. Photoshop CS5 won't let me save a file that appears to be only 3mbs claiming it's over 2 gig's. See image below.
Really not sure what to do about this, the company I work for makes lots of changes so using smart objects is necessary for my work flow. But also seems to be slowing me down trying to figure out issues like this and is problematic when it comes to saving all the work I have been doing.
    Thanks for the help

One thing you might have missed is that Photoshop is not a file editor its a document editor.   The sizes Photoshop is displaying are related to how much ram it using for the documents data. How efficient ram is being used etc. File sizes vary all over the place sizes depend on the number of pixels in an image format support layers no layers compression?, transparency.   There is no way Photoshop could even guess at any file sizes.
An other is all smart object layer are not created the same and their sizes my be far different the you may think.
Smart object layers have a basic format. There is an embedded object, there is a composite pixel rendering for embedded object that is used for the layer pixels and there is a transform associated for the layer rendered pixels.
Anything Photoshop supports can be an embedded object.  These objects are copies of the original object.  For example a copy of a RAW file where ACR settings are stored in the file copy metadata. An embedded object might be a copy of a PSD file that has thousands of layers. in any case Photoshop renders pixels for the embedded objects composite view and uses these rendered pixels as the smart object layers pixels.  These pixels can not be changed within the document.
However the embed object can be opened and worked on and changed. If the change is committed Photoshop will update the embedded object and render the updated object composit view and replace the layers pixels.
Smart Object Layer Pixels can only be acted on in the document not changed with paint etc. For example the Transform associated with the smart object layer sizes and positions the layer rendering over the canvas. The layer actual size may be larger then, smaller then the canvas size and have a different aspect ratio then the canvas. Example if you place in an image that is larger then the document canvas size one of Adobe Photoshop's Preferences is set by default have Place resize large images to fit within current the documents canvas size. The transform associated with that placed layer would cause the rendering of the layers pixels to fit with in the canvas.
Though an embedded  object may contain thousands of layers the actual object may be much smaller then you think for PSD files are compressed object may be compressed.  Also while the embedded object  may contain vector layers when a smart object layer is transformed the layer is transformed using interpolation like a raster layer for all that is being transformed is the pixels Photoshop rendered for the embedded smart object. The only way to work on the embedded smart object layers it to open the smart object and work on the object itself.j

  • How to draw vector shape?

I use following statement to draw a shape
    [CODE]for(....){
      sprite.graphics.beginFill(..);
      sprite.graphics.drawRect(x,y,1,1);
      sprite.graphics.endFill();

Set Flash object size to 100% x 100% in the HTML - then you'll see your drawing changes the size as you resize the browser window.

my smart objects pixelate with resizing. when imported as EPS's, AI, directly placed vectors from AI, my smart objects pixelate with resizing. The vector has no effects added they were designed as strokes, converted to outline, pathfinder merged etc.. i also tried pasting it in in actual size directly from illustrator, pasted in bigger then reduced down to size in photoshop, pasted it in as a hi res png, eps.. and it persisted to render like this... although it did not do this when i exported it as a JPG- it rendered find

  • How do I open as smart object whilst retaining the images original scale? (for architectural drawings)

A simple question I know but I cannot seem to import the vector file at its original scale into photoshop. I am aware that you can transform the smart object once imported to photoshop but im sure there is an easier way for the accuracy required with architectural drawing scales.
Any help would be much appreciated to save me a little time.
    Thanks

    Thanks for your responses.
Despite setting the canvas size and dpi in vector works, open as smart object function opens the vector file on a separate sheet in photoshop and therefore defaults to an incorrect size for some reason. The solution was in fact far more simple, drag and drop directly on to the preset photoshop file rather than using the open as function. This made me feel rather silly, but at least the problem is resolved!
Another problem I have come across though is the issue of line weights. When printing directly from Vectorworks the lines are far crisper than the photoshop version despite using smart objects which is supposed to retain the vector lines? Would you know of any reason for this?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Vector shape to smart object, is blurry when scaled

I've recently been upgraded to Photoshop CS5.5 and am having issues with smart objects.
    Quite often I would:
make a shape layer, say a circle
apply a layer style, say a stroke and drop-shadow
    Convert this to a smart-object
Resize this object to whatever I needed and it would scale perfectly, the layer styles and crisp edge would scale.
Now, when I use this same workflow, the whole object becomes blurry - like it's become one giant bitmap instead of retaining its original nature.
The blurred smart object loses it's vector nature and looks horrible, this is surely an error.

It depends on how you scale the smart object layer. If you just use Ctrl+T free transform Photoshop will matieilize the pixels for the layer then resize the materilazed pixel layer like normal raster layer not text not a shape layer. If on the otherhand you double click on the smart object icon in the layer in the layers palette Photoshop will open the smart object in photoshop. If it a RAW file it wil open in ACR. If is is a Photoshop Document like a PSD, Tif, Jpeg etc it will open in Photosgop. If it is some Photoshop object like a layer group a collection of layers an vector shape layer it will open in Phpotoshop.  You can then scale the smart object  with Photoshop tools like ACR or Image size set resample constrain scale layer style etc to scale the smart object when you use save the change Photoshop will update the smaer object layer in the document. You can do the save by clicking the Close icon and respond yes to save.  Scaling the smart object layr this way  will scale text and vectors the way you want them to be scaled.
