Why do we apply patches

Dear all,
I am very new to Oracle database, so question arise and I post them.
I need to know that why do we apply patches and what is DBA's advice regarding applying patches.

The Concepts guide is a good book to start reading from, and never stop actually (meaning, go back to it on a regular basis). Administrator's, Reference and SQL Reference are other hot titles.
Also, you could search forums about patches
I need to know that why do we apply patches and what
is DBA's advice regarding applying patches. There could also be business reasons that demand patch set or patches.
- system compatibility requirements
- upgrade of application components that use certain features, which might not work (properly) without patching
- for Support it is advisable to be on the Current/latest Patch set

Error applying patch 6435000

Am trying to upgrade a 11.5.10 instance to R12 and while trying to apply patch 6435000, am getting stuck at the stage where worker is executing job jtf_diag_dependencies.xdf. Worker log indicates the system is unable to get a connection to db. The service name being used is actually the sid, but don't understand where the system is picking this up from.
Have verifed the context file and env files to ensure that the service name and sid are specified appropriately (hrtc and hrtc1 respectively).
Any pointers on where to look next greatly appreciated.

Hi,
The error is, as you see, the inability to get a connection. The problem is that I don't understand why the service name is listed with the sid instead of the service name in the connection string. The listing a few lines above the error does indicate the service name (hrtc) and instance name (hrtc1) correctly. Where is this information being picked up from? I have reviewed the context file and environment files. The sid and service name are correctly listed in these files.
Any pointers?

CUSTOM.pll missing after applying patch 6167056

HI ALL,
i have applied patch 6167056 successfully, to carry on the post install step to Copy the CUSTOM.pll to $AU_TOP/resource and re-generate the CUSTOM.plx
i cannot find the CUSTOM.pll at 6167056/backup/resource

should copy the CUSTOM.pll to regenerate using f60gen module=CUSTOM userid=apps/<appspwd> module_type=LIBRARY
OR can i skip the post install step because there were no customization applied?

[SOLVED] Applying patches: build() or package()

I am writing a package that applies a patch to rsync.
Based on other packages I have seen, it seems that the patch should be applied in the build() function, but I'm not sure why. Am I correct that this is the right place to apply patches? Why should this not be done in package()?

Whenever possible, opt to patch in the build function. The package function should serve only to move the proper files in place -- in the classical Makefile sense, it should run 'make install' and tidy up whatever else needs to be moved around.

Extract driver from kernel tree and apply patches to it

Hi
I am trying to "enhance" a driver, fix it more or less, by applying a patches to it I found at aircrack-ng.org.
So what I would like to do is:
1) Extract the source code from the kernel tree for this particular driver
2) Update the old patch to match the modern code.
3) Make a PKGBUILD for it and share it with other through the AUR.
So far:
1) I dont know how to do it
2) I found the patch and I think I know which lines need to be updated
3) Let us make #1 and #2 first and I ll see what I will do about the package and how it should be named, because it should not be in conflict with the stock module
I reached this point because I am so frustrated with my rtl8187b based usb wireless card and the only way to avoid those frequent disconnects is by either using ndiswrapper (last resort) or by trying the patches found at aircrack-ng.org. I don't know anything about coding, so I cannot write something new, perhaps by updating the patches, I could actually achieve something. Maybe until it gets fixed upstream.

OAM - Applied Patches feature

Hi Hussein:
I was trying to apply a patch on my production environment to fix a notification mailer problem after I recently upgraded to ATG RUP 6.0.
I verified the existence of patches using Applied Patches feature from OAM. As per OAM results none of the prerequisite patches were installed. But when I try check the Bug_number from AD_BAGS , I am seeing all the patches as applied. Why is this weird behaviour from
OAM?

Steps to apply patch...

Hi,
I found on page 3-2 on doc titled as "Oracle Applications Maintenance Procedures" the steps required for applying a patch.
During step 7: "Respond to the AutoPatch prompts" the system asks for the password of ORACLE user. Is this the password of system db user account..???
Do i have to run autoconfig after each applied patch, or once after applying the last one, or if the readme file of a patch does direct to do so....or...???

Ah.... that's why on paragraph "Testing a Patch Before Applying It" page 3-5 (of the doc i reffered to my previous post) it is written:
".... In test mode, AutoPatch reads and validates the patch driver file, reads product file
driver files, extracts object modules from product libraries (for version checking),
performs version checking, *and runs AutoConfig (in test mode)*." Test mode means you use "option=no", this is is useful if you want to know exactly what a patch will do before applying the patch.

Except for the notes written on this doc, Is there anything else i have to be careful of as i'm going to apply my very first patch and i do not want to fail....Just make sure you take a backup, and follow the steps in the patch README file.

Invalid package WWSBR_IMT_SERVICES after apply patch 3.0.9.8.1

After applying patch 3.0.9.8.1, get an invalid package.
Upon trying to compile the package WWSBR_IMT_SERVICES the following error
occurs
SQL> show err

ACS 5.3 applying patch

I have problem with applying patch on ACS 5.3. In release notes there is mentioned following command format:
acs patch install patch-name.tar.gpg repository repository-name
The problem is ACS 5.3 does't have this command syntax.
It does't have acs command.
Here is what i have trued:

Error while applying patch for SOA suite 10.1.3.4 on Weblogic 9.2 - URGENT

I am trying to apply a weblogic patch on SOA server but facing an error while applying the Opatch . I checked the accessibilty to opatch inventory by using the command % opatch lsinventory . This executed fine and there were no errors. But when I try applying the opatch I get the error -that some jars missing . Even if I replace the jars and try executing opatch again I face the same error . I googled a lot but couldnt find any solution . Please let me what can be done for solving this error .

Error while applying Patch 4960210

Hi,
I am trying to integrate oracle apps with Oracle EBS 12R and following Doc Id:376811.1 from metalink.
I have successfully installed patch 5983637, but when I try to install patch 4960210 on it, even though I stopped all the services on app server, i get the following error:
Certain files which need to be reinstalled by oracle universal installer are being used by one or more applications.
Please close any running applications before continuing.
NOTE: when I upgraded the existing OracleAS 10.1.2.0.2 Infrastructure to Oracle Identity Management 10g (10.1.4.0.1) I created a new oracle home and installed my components there (unknowingly), so not sure if this causing problem.

once The Installation creates APPL_TOP, COMMON_TOP, INST_TOP and 10g Oracle Home
Now we are connected to R12 application.
Applied patch AD.A 4502962.
Run the American English upgrade patch driver
cd $AU_TOP/patch/115/driver
adpatch options=nocopyportion,nogenerateportion
Please enter the name of your AutoPatch driver file: u4440000.drv
This patch doesn't have readme it will be under cd $AU_TOP/patch/115/driver

Quite obvious:
oracle.developer.forms, 10.1.2.3.0 whereas
Oracle Home : /oracle/div4db/11.1.0which seems to be the oracle home of a 11.1 database. Did you set the oracle_home environment variable to the oracle home of your forms installation before invoking opatch?
