Why do we register products with Apple?

I've just registered my new iPhone 3G with Apple and like all registrations, it's a satisfying feeling when I get the email that confirms the registration.
But what I want to know is, why do we even register with Apple? There seems to be no benefit for us. I can't have a look at all the products I've registered with them in the past. There seems to be no point.
Can anyone explain to me why we do it?

due to Apple's marketing records.
When you search a serial number on the support page there is no acknowledge it's yours.
I strongly advice Apple to build a better practice in this relating to the tracing of stolen goods.

  • We had our MAC book Pro stolen and we registered it with Apple. Is there any way to recover the serial number for police reports if the receipt does not have the serial number on it? Thx

We had our Mac Book Pro stolen and have not been able to recover the serial number from our Best Buy receipt. We did register it with Apple during the set-up and downloaded music on it thru ITunes.  Any chance we can recover the serial number from somewhere?  Any details would be helpful.  Thank you!

You can try going here, using the same AppleID you used on the machine:
    https://supportprofile.apple.com/
You should see a list of all the devices registered to you

  • What does registering FCP with Apple do?

If I am selling an old, unused copy of FCP with a unique serial number, how do I license it to my friend if I have already registered it with Apple? Will that make a difference? The License agreement says I can transfer ALL rights to a new person, provided FCP is intact. Can I unregister it with Apple? What does registering with Apple even do?
    thanks

I'm pretty sure all you need to do is call 1-800-myapple... and they can arrange the license transfer.

  • How can I find the serial ID of a registered product with my Apple ID?

I lost my ipod nano, I had registered the product on this site, I saw an i pod in the vicinity that loks just like mine, however to confirm I need to know the serial ID of the product I registered, how do I find this?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
To search your iPod nano serial number in the Internet, it must be registered to your Apple ID. As it's registered, open http://supportprofile.apple.com, and log in with your Apple ID. After that, you will see all the registered devices with their serial numbers

  • How can I find my registered devices with apple

    Hi,
I am looking to find what devices I still have registered with Apple. How does one do this?
    Thanks

Are you looking for a particular product?   I understand only computers are now registered, all other products have their warranties covered by your having a copy of the purchase receipt.

  • Why are Sony headsets incompatible with Apple hardware?

    Hello,
Close to one year ago, I had to get my iPod touch 2G replaced due to a defective headphone jack. One staff member at the Apple store told me that Sony, Skullcandy, and some other brands of headphones have a slightly larger plug which wrecks the jack on iPods over time because Sony and Skullcandy (among other brands) have headphone jacks that are just slightly larger than the others. This seems like a reasonable explanation to me.
What I'm wondering is: is this slightly larger jack size exclusive to only a few brands, or does it extend to all brands except Apple's own earbuds? (which would be ridiculous) Secondly, why does this problem occur with ALL Apple hardware, including their computers? (My iMac G5 has the same issue my old iPod touch did.) Do the engineers at Apple not realize that Sony headphones are the choice of not only many home users, such as myself, but also many respected creative professionals around the world? Seeing how Apple hardware is used extensively by these "creative" professionals, such as musicians and music producers, what exactly is the reasoning for making Apple hardware incompatible with these jack sizes? Is there any work around for this incompatibility, such as some kind of headphone adapter I can pick up at Radio Shack?
Since I know that some users here will inevitably believe that I am thick-headed enough to confuse 1/4" jack with the 3.5mm variety, allow me to make it explicitly clear that I am not trying to somehow use a 1/4" jack with my iPod! (that is not even physically possible...)
Also, if anyone knows where I could contact Apple for some sort of official statement of this matter, I would be quite grateful.

    Well it doesn't to me.

In which case, that would suggest that the Apple jack is smaller than every other make, not that everyone else has a larger "plug". But I don't accept "a difference in size" as any sort of explanation. In fact, I think such an explanation is complete rubbish!
Other than that, I agree with Kappy, why would you post a problem about a Sony product on an Apple forum?
What can happen though, is that the back end headphone plug (the bit you grip to remove the plug) can be pushed against other objects when the iPod is in your pocket or bag and then the business end of the plug (the front bit that goes into the socket) is levered over, pushing the headphone jack over as well, and that causes the connection between the socket and the circuit board to break. Hence the problem.
The solution (to minimise the risk of broken headphone jacks) is to ensure that the plug cannot be pushed over while it's in your bag or pocket. I purchased a right-angled 3.5mm adaptor (http://www.keene.co.uk/electronics/multi.php?mycode=KA178) which reduces strain on the socket. In additon, do not leave the plug inserted with the headphone cord wrapped tight around the device when you're not using it, because once again, that will strain the connection inside the iPod.

  • To buy a product with apple do i have to book an appointment

Do I have to book an appointment online to talk to a member of staff in store about a product and what one to buy?

From my only experience in the only official retail Apple Store in my state,
I suggest if you have a phone, take it with you and if you do not see any
body there give you the time of day, eye contact, or say Hi to you, then Call.
I'd wanted to first hand look at a Late 2012 Mac Mini quad-core while in stock
back in late September before the new replacement upgrade models came out
and so I went uptown in Anchorage (Alaska) and rented parking space in the
parking garage next to the 5th Avenue Mall, and wandered around there until
finding the Apple Store... And it was a total let-down. No employees said Hi,
nobody there gave me any eye-contact, and even though I walked slowly to
see if the model(s) I was interested in buying may have been available in store,
was unable to get to some displays of product due to iDevice users in droves,
standing around with their iPad, iPhone, iPod, etc on all flat places in the Store.
Even these enthralled persons appeared too involved to notice other life forms.
So I proceeded around the store yet again, choosing to watch ever closer to
see if any one glanced up; but nobody ever did. This really got my Zen up, as
Mr Jobs would probably have bought a different brand if he'd been so ignored.
Four months later, I ended up buying the item similar to what I wanted to see
in the store (never having seen it in person, or being able to check exact specs
since nobody at the Apple Store online could tell me the OS X version in mine)
& I almost didn't keep the computer. However to be rid of it would either involve
a trip uptown to the same Mall to the official Apple Store, or a different path to
the International Airport area to see the main FedEx office, to send it back to CA.
Although I try to have pre-buyer remorse (talk myself out of buying stuff) this time
my guard was down, and I'd not owned any new Apple product in over 10 years.
Given the next nearest official Apple Store was either Seattle WA or in Hawaii...
At least the one I did get can be upgraded by owner, and isn't stuck in 10.5.8!

  • HT201317 Why is photostream not working with Apple TV

When I try to select Photostream photo's for my screen saver on my Apple TV I get the message "Unable to sign in. The ICloud Terms of Service have changed. For information go http://www.apple.com/support/icloud. And there I can't find anythis. Can somebody explain how I can fix this?

The answer is the apple TV update to 5.1 messed it up. Here's the solution:
    1. Download the previous version of your apple TV software here depending on your model:
    Apple TV 2:
    http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-4362.20120605.t8i4U/AppleTV2,1_5.0.2_9B830 _Restore.ipsw
    Apple TV 3:
    http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-4361.20120605.grjot/AppleTV3,1_5.0.2_9B830 _Restore.ipsw
    2. When I downloaded it, it came as a compressed ZIP file. You need to change its extension to IPSW. (just replace zip by ipsw, no need to uncompress its contents)
    3. You will need a MicroUSB to USB cable, in order to connect your Apple TV to your PC in diagnostics mode. Once you get it connected, open iTunes.
    4. Wait til you see Apple TV on devices. Once you see it click on it.
    5. Press and Hold the "Shift" key (PC) and hit the button "Restore". That way, instead of searching Apple's servers, you'll select the local file you just downloaded.
    6. Wait til is restored and a message pops telling you to unplug the USB cable, then do so. In my case The Apple TV kept blinking a while and couldn't power it off with the remote. Just unplug the power cord and replug it after 10 secs.
    7. Turn on Apple TV, select language. It'll try activate it. In my case it couldn't connect through Ethernet to the server. I unplugged ethernet cable and went to Network settings and set the Wifi password of my network. Then Restarted on Settings->General.
    8. After Restarting it activated itself and everything is working as before. Hope it works for everyone affected. Cheers!
