Why do you need an iPad?

How does an iPad serve your needs compared to say, a macbook air, or something similar (ie. another small netbook or laptop) ?
The reason I ask is because as I have started using my iPad, I am realizeing some magor deficiencies such as inability to watch flash-based content on websites, no USB, no camera, etc..
Your thoughts?

The reason I ask is because as I have started using my iPad, I am realizeing some magor deficiencies such as inability to watch flash-based content on websites, no USB, no camera, etc..
Your thoughts?
My iPad has completely replaced my MBP in one week. I still need the MBP for horsepower in some massive spreadsheets, but that's about it. I now use the iPad for about 75% of my work, and it makes it easy. I still type faster on a normal keyboard, so I await the keyboard dock. And the iPad does things better than a laptop. Reading books for example. I just sold my Kindle, because the Kindle App is near perfect (I may or may not switch to iBooks depending solely on pricing).
As for your other points:
• Flash. I never liked it, and I don't miss it. I didn't miss it with my iPhone. I block Flash content on Safari. I really don't consider this a deficiency, I consider it leaving being 90's technology for the dustbin of history. In fact, because iPhone and iPad users are, in general, wealthier and more tech savvy than the average consumer, an intelligent advertiser will realize he's missing 100 million iPhone and iPad users (and growing) by not having flash. Lots of websites are dumping flash. Adobe is crying. Who cares about them.
• USB port. I cannot imagine why this matters. I can print over wireless. And....what else do I need? This is a canard put out by individuals on the internet to put down the iPad. They were the same ones that whined and laughed when Apple went to Firewire (then dumped it), then to USB 2.0, or removed the floppy disk (who misses that format?), or pushed wireless over ethernet. Please show me one thing that I'm missing because I don't have a USB port?
• Camera. I'm almost with you there, but I really don't care. Pictures on the iPhone (or any mobile phone) are horrible because they're being taken with a $25 part in the phone. The images are terrible. But, even if there is some use for the camera, it's going to be very odd to hold up the iPad to take a photo. I guess you can use it for iChat, which might be nice. But there is no way I'm going to get cleaned up, shaved, and get my haircut just so I might chat with my girlfriend on iChat. BTW, there is a 99 cent app that allows your iPad to control your iPhone's camera. Check it out.
For me, I haven't found one deficiency of the iPad, except that it's a tad too heavy for reading over a longer period of time. But when I'm in bed, I just place it on a pillow, and I'm happy. I use my iPhone less, but I do need a phone, and it has 3G for email. Hopefully, someone will figure out how to tether my iPhone to the iPad, but I'll live for the time being.

  • Why do you need an f after a float initializtion?

When you make a declaration and initialization of a float, you have to put an f after the number, correct?
    Like
    float productPrice1 = 285.00f;
why do you need to do this and do you need to do it in an assignment operation to?
    productPrice1 = 285.00f;
What about for doubles? Would I need to use a d in place of the f?
    thanks

What about for doubles? Would I need to use a d inplace of the f?
No, you need to do that to tell the compiler it is a
float, not a double. When assign to a double, you
don't need to tell the compiler it is a double. :)although nothing bad will happen if you do use a 'd' or 'D'.

  • Why do you need to shift click to select stroke color with eyedropper tool?

    Hi,
    Quick question..
Why do you need to shift click to select the stroke color with the eyedropper tool?
I had the problem where I could not do this earlier and found the solution on this forum.
However I still do not understand the reason for this.
Appreciate if anyone could explain it to me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nori

    Hi, Nori,
If you have the red and blue rectangle selected and the Fill square selected in the tool panel, as at bottom left, then hold the shift key down and click with the eyedropper on the green stroke in the upper rectangle, then the red fill will turn green but the stroke stays blue. If you select Stroke, as at bottom right, then shift-click with the eyedropper on the green stroke, the blue stroke will turn green but the fill stays red. With Fill selected and shift-click on the yellow fill, the red fill turns yellow; with Stroke selected the blue stroke turns yellow. If you do not depress the shift key, the red and blue rectangle will become yellow and green.
It's complicated to explain, but I think that if you try it step by step it will make sense to you.

Why do you need to go about linking to services-config.xml in
your flex compiler when you want to do remoting. It just seems like
a complicated way to do things.

Yeah I find this perplexing as well. I'm guessing it has something to do with Opalis origins perhaps.
Would be good to understand why.

  • Why would you need an H.264 hardware encoding device?

I am a casual user of Adobe Premiere Pro and just upgraded to CS5.5.   I have been reading threads and someone said that he has problems with the Matrox encoder.  I can import my video and make and DVD so why would you need another hardware solution?

I don't know how it works on Windows but on the Mac it shows up as a QuickTime component. So any application that can export a QuickTime movie (QuickTime Player, Adobe Media Encoder, Compressor, etc) can export to this component and it will utilize the Matrox hardware.
Theoretically you could set your preview file format in Premiere to the Matrox component but I don't know how well it would work.

  • Why do you need PVDMs?

    Hi all,
    Dumb question!
Why do you need PVDMs in a NM-HDV2-1T1/E1? The voice from the IP phones is in digital form, and so surely is the voice coming in over the T1/E1 - why do you need these DSPs?
    thanks,
    alec

You could almost call them transcoders in this case.
The default g711 codec for a given country (g711ulaw for North America, g711alaw for most everywhere else including I think the UK) is identical or nearly identical to that used on PRIs or clear-channel channelized circuits. If the g711 variant you're using for your VoIP traffic isn't the same as the g711 variant for PSTN circuit you're using, the DSPs handle that transcoding. If you're using robbed-bit channelized circuits, the DSPs have to drop a little bit of information. If you're using g729 or another low-speed codec, the DSPs have to "expand" the audio up to the PSTN channel size. And of course, the reverse of all this stuff takes place when audio comes in from the PSTN and has to be packetized and sent out on your IP network.
The DSPs are also in charge of getting the right data to the PSTN channel at the right time. T1/E1 lines have strict timing requirements and the DSPs handle transmitting bits at just the right times. Part of that is handling the de-jitter buffers that turn possibly jittery RTP traffic into a nice isochronous bitstream for the PSTN circuit, and doing predictive insertion if we don't get voice data in time to put it on the circuit.
One more duty the DSPs handle is echo cancellation from the PSTN. They "memorize" outgoing voice traffic, and then they listen for it coming back from the PSTN. If it's present, they mathematically "subtract" it from the incoming voice stream, which eliminates it.
This is not a complete list of what the DSPs do for you, but I think I hit the highlights.

  • HT1918 Why do you need my credit card information when I purchase songs from an already purchased Itunes gift card?

Why do you need my credit card information when I purchase songs from an already purchased Itunes gift card?  If I cannot purchase goods with the prepuchased gift cards, then the card is useless and I want my money back.

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Just because you are being asked to enter your credit card details doesn't mean that it will be charged for your purchases.
Is it a newly created account ? If it is then unless you use the instructions on this page when creating an account then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used in the store : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534

  • Why do you need a credit card when no money due

I recently was trying to add an older 3G IPad to my Verizon account.  Went through all the steps online and then went to check out.  We currently have 4 phones and 1 other IPad on this account.  Anyway everything is fine until I go to check out.  The total for this transaction was $0.00 but Verizon still wanted a credit card to complete the transaction.  Why would a $0.00 transaction require a credit card.  In today's world why would you even want the responsibility of taking that information if no money was due? Furthermore I asked the online chat person why and they said for verification purposes, really a dumb answer as I was logged in to my Verizon account already to do the transaction. Needless to say I did not complete the transaction.  I refuse to give out credit card information when there was no money due, especially considering I refuse to have a credit card. Furthermore I am not giving out debit card information that is tied directly to my personal bank account.  Note to the people who do your website coding.  Don't require a credit card for a $0.00 transaction when the person is already logged in to their Verizon account.  Probably not a big deal to Verizon as they only lost the activation fee and the $10 a month charge to have the device plus the possible uptick in data usage. It seems like a really dumb business decision on their part though.

That just doesn't cut it.  1. They were not shipping me anything. 2. I was logged in to my Verizon account which will let me change the whole data limit etc without a credit card.  The requirement was nonsensical as I already had the IPad and just wanted to add it as a new device to an already established account with multiple devices.  Again Verizon's choice but a really bad business decision to require a credit card for an established account with over 7 years of account history with you guys when you were shipping nothing and their was no money due for this transaction.

  • Why do you need a logical plant?

    Hi Guys
Please explain me with an example, Why do I need a logical plant in SAP. If i decide to have one, can I have a logical plant without a valuation and then on moving the stock to the original plant it should get valuated. I raise this discussion my implentation is affected because of wrong valuation of stock. Please express your confident views regarding.
    Regards
    Pradeep/ICF

    Hi,
Not sure why you need a logical plant. Normally dummy plants are made to facilitate material movements to cater complex scenarios. In OMS2 you can omit any Material type with regards to the plant as "Value updating" .

  • Why do you need my bank details if your apps are free

Why can't I download a free app, if my bank has under £10 in it?

I don't need your bank details, and neither does any of the other users in this user-to-user discussion forum. You will have to direct your question to Apple, not to other users.
However, Apple needs some sort of proof you are who you say you are. The way they do this is by verifying a payment method. So you need either Apple gift cards deposited to your account, or a debit or credit card number.

  • Why do you need WiFi to watch a downloaded movie?

I bought a movie on my Ipod touch and watched half of it. Then when I went to finish it, It would not come on due to "no Wifi connection". Why do I need WiFi connection to watch a movie I just downloaded?

There's downloading and streaming. And often hard to tell the two apart.
Downloading means that the files are stored on your device, streaming means that you simply access them, but need to be on the net to do so. It sounds like you were streaming a movie, not downloading one.

  • HT2534 why do you need my cc?????

The article on itunes is incorrect.  I do not get an option to click "none" when creating an apple ID...I only want to get some artwork, not planning to purchase anything, so why do they need my cc info?

    dablenda wrote:
I think this is ridiculous...why would I put that information out there if I am not buying anything?
Setting up an account without a credit card does appear to be slightly "involved", but since you have stated that you don't intend to buy anything and that you simply want to find the artwork, perhaps you should concentrate on getting the artwork using the method I suggested.
I never get artwork for any of my albums from the iTunes Store. Since the Store only has artwork for the albums it sells, several of my CDs will not be found in the Store anyway.
There is another method too if you are using your CDs as the source for your music: if you have a scanner bed, or a printer with a scanner facility, scan the CD cover and paste that into your artwork box.
By the way, note that tt2's post states that you cannot change an existing AppleID to the "no credit card" option. So if you simply tried to change your existing id, then that could be the problem.
