Why does a broadband modem router become unresponsive?

I've experienced that my broadband router, in my case a NetComm NB5 ADSL2+ ethernet, becomes unresponsive. It will be fine for a number of internet connections, then it will take a long time for its 'connect' dialogue box to display. It's as if there's some growing problem over time with communication between the G5 and the router. The only action I've found that renews fast response is disconnecting the router's power cord and then reconnecting but I wonder if this is advisable. It's like that old student joke, 'Please sir, my brain is full'. Is there some housekeeping I should be doing to keep response time fast?

Like everything else a router can eventually wear out. Most of the time the problem is the power supply.
This document is a good starting point.

  • Why does Premiere Pro 6.0 become unresponsive with longer video sequences?

Laptop A works fairly well with small Premiere Pro CS6 projects of 9 minute duration. Project is on external drive connected via USB2. Processing time is long, but at least I can get all my work done.
However, when I use Laptop A for larger projects (25-minute duration), Premiere becomes unresponsive.
Example: I try to press STOP during playback and it does no respond. In fact, the only way to stop playback is to press CTRL-S and wait for a minute until the CPU is ready to acknowledge your keystrokes.
On Laptop B the same 25-minute project performs fine (again project is on external hard drive, but this time connected over USB3).
So there are four differences between my laptops:
    LAPTOP A
    LAPTOP B
    Make & OS
Win 7 Home Premium - 64-bit (Lenovo ThinkPad)
    Win 7 Pro - 64-bit (Dell Precision)

    Internal HD
    SATA2
    SSD
    RAM
    8GB
    16GB
    USB
    USB2
    USB3
I can live with Laptop A being slow, but the unresponsive is a show stopper for me. Please help me figure out which of these factors is causing the unresponsiveness.
    Thanks!

  • Why does my computer "stick" or become unresponsive?

A few months ago, my hard drive crashed, but it's been fixed.  Now, I have problems with the screen freezing up.  I have to turn it off completely and then restart.  Any ideas?

Boot from your install disc, run Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Make sure the S.M.A.R.T status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window says: Verified

  • Why does the Linksys WRT54G router REQUIRE a hostname when it's never used?

Why does the Linksys WRT54G REQUIRE a hostname when it's never used?
I can't find a single use for the router hostname, yet the Linksys WRT54G version 5 firmware v1.00.6 wireless router REQUIRES a hostname, even though nothing actually uses that hostname.
Why does the router require a hostname (why can't we just leave that field blank)?

This is to report a bug in the "Setup", "Basic Setup"
    tab, "Router Name" field
    (https://10.2.18.20/basic.htm) in the otherwise
wonderful Linksys WRT54G V5 wireless router (firmware
    revision 1.02.0).
As you are aware, a router is a security and privacy
device; as such, it should not require identifying
information if that identifying information is not
needed nor used by the user or their ISP.
Such is the case with the "router name" field.
In the case of the "Unnecessary Router Name
Requirement" bug, I am reporting to you (and to the
associated Linksys forums at forums.linksys.com) the
Router Name field should NOT be required. It should be
an option to leave the Router Name field blank.
The fact that the router name field MUST exist
(whether or not it is actually used or desired), is an
obvious security and privacy flaw in the otherwise
wonderful Linksys WRT54G router. Please fix this bug.
    Thank you very much,

  • Why does font change suddenly and become bold when replying to email

I really could use some help here.
When I reply to an email, no matter what font I am using, within a few lines it switches to a different font and goes bold. Why does this continue to happen? I tried going to Insert, selecting HTML and placing <style type="text/css"> body {font: 12pt Tahoma;} </style> it works but it has to be done for every email I reply to. Thank you ahead of time.

Oh no, he's talking to himself again. Maybe it's smell of dinner cooking that's throwing him off.

  • Why does black SR102 hub/ router frequently drop connection yet white SR101 does not?

Having been a SKY TV customer for almost 20 years, I was seduced in to joining SKY Talk and Broadband by some exceptional pricing. This was just over a year ago and I was wondering if I would regret moving from BT after being with them for a long time. My worries were unfounded and I got an even better speed and put it down to Sky's simplistic white SR101 router... having said that the wireless signal was not particularly good even with the use of their booster, but we put up with it. Despite Fibre coming on line by this Christmas (and waiting for offers), 2 weeks ago I re-contracted SKY Broadband Unlimited and I was told that I would receive a new black SR102 router which would, amongst many things, improve the wireless signal strength, reliability and allow me to connect to Fibre without an engineer visit... and let THE problem begin! What should have been a simple swap out has turned into a nightmare. Basically, the SR102 syncs (at similar speeds to as before with the white SR101) and remains active for anything between 10 minutes and a few hours before the Internet light goes solid orange. At it's best I will have a connection for 5 hours, but at it's extreme worst, I will lose connection at least every 20 minutes with days when I simply cannot surf let alone watch any TV on demand! The router(s) never attempt to re-reconnect and I have to reboot each time, which is highly impractical. I have called SKY too many times to count (probably cumulatively wasting a whole day in the past 2 weeks troubleshooting etc), with excuses that equipment was faulty, being sent new filters and phone cables and now a 3rd black SR102 router - but nothing has changed! I wondered if somehow "training" was incorrectly taking place, but apparently this is not the case. Here's the strange bit - in order to allow my wife to work from home one day a week and not destroy weekend TV viewing, I reconnected the old white SR101 for 2 consecutives Friday to Sundays and the connection has been and continues to be rock solid 24/7! Why? I posed this question to telephone support and they finally conceded that a lot of the problems they are addressing of late are the same as mine and suspect a build fault with the SR102... and needless to say my problem has now been escalated. Tomorrow, I will begrudgingly reconnect the SR102 and wait for them to call me... I could continue to use the white SR101, however, I have re-contracted with SKY and expect the router to work when I move to Fibre by Christmas but I have no faith it will. By that time it will be too late to leave SKY and go elsewhere! What words of wisdom can any one offer me (and please do not direct me to online troubleshooting as I've done it all, many times, to no avail)?

i would not mind if i had brought the item i would replace it, but SKY gave me this router to use there service which i am paying for each month i was estimated 22mbps but i only get 12mbps because there is a fault on the line and SKY will not pay for the line to be fixed which the fault is from the telegraph pole to phone hub box on main road so what would you do would you be happy with more disappointment and more cost for something which is not my problem. they would soon start to moan if i stopped paying the bill my one month bill is the cost of the router.

  • Why does my 40 minute movie become a 7 hour video in compressor?

I've made a final cut HD movie about 41 minutes in length.  When I send it to compressor I have to wait many hours while Compressor does it's magic.  The reason for the unreasonable time is that it is compressing a 7 hour plus file rather then the 40 minute movie sent to Compressor.  When the compressed file is sent to DVD Studio Pro I have to drag a 7 hour timeline down to 40 minutes of actual video/audio files.  In Final Cut the sequence time line is only 40 minutes long and I can not find why this relatively short movie becomes so long when dispatched to Compressor.  Any solutions?

Open your project and hit Shift Z. See whether there is any file beyond 40 minutes on the Time Line,
Take the Range tool and do a selection around your movie in the Time Line, In Share, choose Master File and save.
Open that file in Quick Time and it will be 40 minutes. Bring that file into Compressor for whatever encoding job you need.
    Good luck.

  • Why does a 170 Kb file becomes a 3.5 Mb when I save it as theme?

I realized that when I save a file (170 Kb) as theme, its size increases dramatically (3.5Mb) (tried in keynote 09 ad 08 under OSX 10.6.7 or 10.5.8)
I realized that by doing "Save as" > Advanced Options > select "Save theme image into document", the saved file becomes a 3.5 Mb file as well.
Therefore, I suspect that the "save theme" does by default select this "Save theme image into document" option, hence the 3.5 Mb file size.
I tried this on several Macs and got the same result. However, all Macs are Macs I used at some points or where people installed my files / themes.
As a result, all files created from the theme I created are big fat babies of 3.5 Mb, which defeat the purpose of a theme to make it clean and lean.
Please advise if you have the same issue.
Saved custom themes can be found at [Home]/Library/Application Support/iWork/Keynote/Themes.
Suggestions welcome on what caused this oversized theme file size and how to reduce it?
    Thanks in advance

OK, problem solved. I was having this same issue & every presentation that I made from the new template was over 3.5MB, even if it contained only text. I now have it down to 229kB.
I used a plain black theme as my basis for a custom theme. I modified the fonts, layouts, etc, just as I wanted them. Then I saved as a template. The file size balloned to 3.5MB. The reason turns out that the default charts fot the black theme have woodgrain surface textures & these are being saved into the custom theme file (in a folder called "theme-files" within the custom theme package). So the solution is to remove all references to textured charts in the custom theme.
So... Get your custom theme ready & save it as a regular presentation somewhere for safe keeping. Now create a new chart on a new slide. (NB. A new regular slide, not a Master Slide.) For simplicity, choose the top-left-most chart type (column chart). Open the Inspector; go to the chart tab; select Chart Colors. In the new Chart Colors window, select 2D Color Fills & pick any colour. Click Apply All. Go to the menubar item Format --> Advanced --> Define Column Chart for All Masters. Click OK with the default option of "6".
Now, use the Inspector to change the chart to the next chart type along. Repeat the process above of changing the chart colours to a 2D colour fill, then applying this to all masters. Repeat, repeat, repeat for all chart types. I couldn't select a colour fill for some chart types, such as the line graphs.
Once you've defined all charts as using a 2D colour fill, there are no references to textures any longer. So, now delete the chart & its slide. Go to File --> Save Theme. Give it a name.
Now, check your custom theme file size in the Finder. Hopefully, it's come down in size now!

  • Why does my wireless keyboard always become disconnected then reconnected to the wifi all the time?

So I have a brand new imac and the wireless keyboard always switches between connected and disconnected randomly.  I have another identical keyboard I bought a few months ago and it works fine.  Any energy saver functions that could be doing this?

Same prob here. Brand new out of the box apple wireless keyboard with FULL batteries, bought after buying my newish Mac Mini w/o keyboard.
...keeps losing the connection from about 8 'line of sight' feet away (going through Tv to view Mac)
Not sure why a properly working Mini would have to be forced to do an SMC/PRAM reset for something new off the shelf and supposedly working (works very nice with NO signal loss or early sleep with my samsung tab)...to have to do these resets seems very 'windows like' for every new peripheral you buy down the road.
My guess would be that apple made the choice to tinker the .plist for wireless items put them to sleep in 30 secs or less to make the 'battery life' look longer for the new sales pitch. I would have preferred ALL ON, SLEEPLESS and a switch on the keyboard like the old days, but oh well.
I thought I read somewhere from a geek level website that you can 'terminal' a longer sleep mode for Btooth items... anyone know which article I saw or know the terminal command?

  • Why does the huawei modem from Cricket or any flashdrive fit in the USB cord on my macbook pro?

Okay, so I just purchased a macbook pro and I was excited about switching from my dell. While I set up everything in my mac book, it asked me what type of wi-fi or internet connection I would be choosing. I tried to install my cricket modem but there was one problem. It doesn't fit in the USB cord. At first I thought I was putting it wrong but no that wasn't the answer. Then I tried to put a flashdrive to test it and it doesn't fit either? Is there like something wrong with my mac or I am doing something wrong? I didn't had this type of problem with my dell? In fact, I could even connect ipods, iphones to it but in mac....nothing. Can somebody please help me? I'm starting to get frustrated.

The easiest way is to go to the Apple site and find the Java for OSX 2014-001 and install it. There have been some reports of blank pages returned so you may need to try several browsers.

...unfortunately I lost power over the new year period so I only have two weeks data at present, however, I did have a period of about 60 days showing the same pattern. That's 60 days of disconnecting once a day or so. Surely this isn't "normal"?
Before anyone says it - yes, I have changed to the master socket, changed microfilters, etc etc. None of it makes any difference, nor can I detect any pattern in the dropouts. Any thoughts / help much appreciated.

I noticed that that when I tried to connect this morning nothing happened ie all the lights are on but when it doesn't load the webpage and after about 2 minutes the router resets. It may be that the connections are dropping when the router is first used after a long period of inactivity? Those errors are still creeping up...
No - it isn't connected to the test socket at the moment, I suppose you are going to say move it and see if this still happens? I will try a bit later but it didn't make a difference last time I moved it.

  • Iphone 5s - why does maps show a route I've never requested?

I was recently searching on my maps for a location from one point to another and how long it would take to walk.  The following day I go into maps and there on the screen are the driving directions from my home address to a place the other side of the country - which I didn't request or search for.  Anyone else had the same thing happen?  Does anyone know why it would happen?  Could it be linked to a website I've looked at?  Am completely baffled.

Initially, this sounds more of an environmental issue than a hardware.
A couple of things to ask..
Does the glitch only happen in your area? If you go for a drive 50 or 100kms away and use it in that area, does the location go off somewhere in that area too and put show you in a strange place after a period of time? Or does this issue seem to only happen in your area?
Also when it goes off to this other place, if you do nothing and just keep walking, running or what ever you are doing, does it eventually find you again in the correct location?
I'm wondering if you are a getting a conflict between the GPS location and the Cell Tower/WiFi locations when you are in a certain place and one overrides the other.

  • Why does my 2012 macbook pro become slow sometimes?

I've purchased my 2012 4gb ram Macbook ram w/ 500 gb hard drive around September. It started off extremely fast the first 4 months (when I had mavericks), but there we're problems with the Video playback towards the last 4 months (It would Freeze and unfreeze & the the audio-video sync would be way off after 30 mins of netflix, which would cause the whole computer to slow down). So, I installed the Yosemite update, which made it even worse to the point where my macbook was unusable. With yosemite, I'd have an average of 500mb ram free memory available, sometimes even lower. Now, I did a manual restore to OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, and I see the major difference in speed.  I could use safari now & get an average of 1.47 gb of free ram available (with just the safari application open). Now, the video playback issue still occurs sometimes & having about 4 programs open does make the computer slower than usual, but not as often. I'm hoping this is just a ram issue, becuase I'm expecting on upgrading my ram to a 16gb ram or higher while still on Mountain Lion just to be able to run Logic Pro & Adobe Premiere in the near future. If its not a ram issue which is causing this problem on my macbook, I'd be ****** because I'd be spending almost $200 on a ram upgrade and it not resolving this issue would kill me. Could someone help? Ill even take a Diagnose test like Etrecheck if you need me to. Thanks.

  • Why does a b/w JPEG become overexposed when I place a PNG in the same file?

I'm creating a black-and-white ad in InDesign. The background is a JPEG edited in Photoshop (converted to grayscale, cropped, added two black rectangles, one on top, one on bottom with a gradient). I added multiple text boxes and then went to place one of three logos (created and saved in Illustrator as PNG-24) into the file. As soon as I place it anywhere in the document -- on top of the JPEG, four inches away from the JPEG, anywhere -- the JPEG goes to maximum brightness and looks terrible. If I add the logo as a JPEG, everything is fine. The problem is that the logo needs to have a transparent background, which you can only get with a PNG as far as I know. I also tried saving the background JPEG as a PNG, but it comes out similarly overexposed. What do I do??

What you are seeing is the effect of ID's shift to overprint prview quality when transparency is introduced. Grayscales are actually mapped to the black plate, and output as part of the document working CMYK, which may display lighter or darker than the preview of the grayscale. The image should look the same as it does without transparency on the page, but with overprint preview selected, and this is the actual output you can expect when you output to the current CMYK working profile.
You can use the black channel fro the CMYK profile as the gray space when converting to grayscale in photoshop if you want to have the most accurate rendition in both applications.
And if you are creating the logos in Illustrator you shold probably be saving as .ai or PDF, rather than PNG, which is a raster format.

  • Why does Siri stop working, or become unavailable?

The topic says it all. Why is it that sometimes, even in a 4G area, Siri suddenly doesn't  work?

There are a few reasons why siri will stop listening:
    1. It is having problems connecting to the network so can't search for what you are looking for. You are prompted with something like: I am sorry I can't connect right now.
    2. There is a pause when you are dictating something to siri so it assumes you are done. Pauses of about 2 or 3 seconds should do it.
    3. You accidentally press the siri button indicating you are done dictating to siri.
If none of these are the problem, I don't know what else to do. How often is this occuring?
