Why does a font change in my pdf when I print it to file?

A client created this magazine in InDesign and exported it to a pdf. I preflighted it and printed it using Adobe PDF for my printer and unchecked the "Rely on system fonts" button. The preflighter did not indicate that any fonts were unembedded, but the subhead on this page changed several characters anyway. The font is Kalinga, which is a freebie font, but shouldn't the preflighter have indicated if there was a problem? Also, the font was used elsewhere in the magazine, but this is the only page that had the error.

I'm using Acrobat 9 on Windows 7, if that's relevant. I also have Kalinga installed on my computer, but that shouldn't have made a difference. Can anyone help me figure out what happened?

If that's the only place you used that unique font, yes. Convert the textbox to an image file by applying a drop shadow to the font and setting the opacity of the drop shadow to 5%.

'Highlight' Character Style -- Why Does the Font Change?

I want to define a style that mimics a highlight marker.
Choose some text, set the background/fill to yellow.
Highlight filled words, then choose 'Define Style From Selection..."
Then, in the More... selection I deselect every attribute of the character style except for the fill colour. So this should highlight text, but leave every other attribute of the text unchanged -- I think.
But whenever I apply it, the font changes to something I don't recognise -- even though the font is not a part of the character style description.
What am I doing wrong?

You need to make sure the font is embedded in the PDF. This is optional in some sofware.
If it is not embedded, your local font is used. No such local font exists on the iPad.

I have a publisher document with black chancery font which was not on my current computer so I installed the font. It now appears in my document and when I save it as a pdf it seems to be there. BUT when I send it to my iPad the font is not what it should be.

Why does my font change every time I quit FCPX?

I've been using FCPX for about a month now, and I love it. However, a few things keep happening that I can't seem to figure out why. The most obvious is when I set a font to title text, then quit the program. When I come back later, the font is totally different to the one I set previously. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

This is a problem with projects created in 10.0.2. It seems to have ben fixed for projects made in 10.0.3.

Why does the font change when I combine files?

I am trying to combine PDF files into one document using the "combine files" tool online.
The new file that is created changes some of the fonts to different fonts (I think it is having difficulty with times new roman in particular). I need to keep the original fonts when I combine the files, how can I stop it from changing the fonts?

In iBooks, why does the font change?

If you turn to the next page in iBooks, the font is nice and light, if you switch apps then switch back, the iBooks font is thicker, almost bold. You can take a photo of the pages to prove it's not an illusion. This is ios 7 on a retina ipad.

Why does my font get distored more so when I'm at G+, a month ago I had remove FF as my main browser and use chrome because it was so bad everywhere I went?

Now, that I have loaded it back up as my main browser it still does the same thing when I'm at G+ and my gmail account but, not yet with my yuku account which FF is highly recommended their.
The worst was when it was happening in my FF tool bar but, so far it has not but, has me paranoid that it will happen again like before since it's still happening @ G+ and Gmail.
Ooo when I tried to take a screen shot for you to see what I see it went away and went back to normal again.
Is it me or is there a bug in there that I am not knowing about or is it s little glitch?
P.S. My bf has been on FF forever and has never had this problem!

Sometimes fonts are distorted due to incompatibility with a particular graphics card driver. To check that theory, could you try disabling Firefox's use of hardware graphics acceleration?
You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved or improved?
Some users also miss ClearType anti-aliasing when they use Firefox, compared with IE, since IE has its own ClearType settings independent of Windows. I believe to have ClearType font smoothing in Firefox, you need to turn it on in your Windows display settings.

Why does Photoshop randomly change Smart Object sizes when transforming?

This has happened to me forever and every so often I ask to see if there's a solution. It seems like a bug.
Here's the process.
Select smart object (via panel or Move tool)
Free Transform
Select top left anchor (happens with any btw)
Change measurements to desired size.
Apply transformation
Free Transform again
Measurements are different than what was applied!
I've again documented the process and am attaching all the images at the end.

It happens when you have transformed text.
It's a widely discussed bug, that we've acknowledged and are testing a fix for.

Word 2013 uses its own pdf creator engine as far as I know. The step I performed were:
1 - In the save settings I told word to embed fonts (sorry for the language, I have the Italian client)
2 - Export from Word -> Save As -> .pdf adding also the table of contents/index
N.B. I cannot use PDF/A, and in any case it doesn't embed the font
A working solution is to use Acrobat XI to convert it or print with Adobe PDF printer, results:
The problems are 2:
1 - It doesn't create any bookmark and doesn't create links from the table of images to the linked images
2 - Images, also with the preset "High Quality Printing" customized using "No compression", are really ugly and if you zoom a bit more than 100% they totally be s**t. It wasn't that way with PDF created by word.
In the end, or I find they way to open the pdf created by word and embedd the missing font, or I find a way to make Acrobat XI creating bookmarks from the word file.
Suggestion?

Related to the question, I suspect you have licensed fonts that cannot be embedded. Thus, the PDF is using what it is finding to be an equivalent as well as it can guess. Did you check the font list in the PDF?

for example, when i am attempting to make a 'all-day' appointment on october 2nd 2011, it automatically shifts it to october 1st.
but if i am doing a timed appointment for only a few hours, it will allow me to put it on that day.

Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."
