Why does a screensaver that I used weeks ago keep appearing?

Boot up from your computer by holding down the command+r keys. This will take you to the recovery drive.
Select Disk Utility & hit Return.
In Disk Utility select the HD on the left & click on Repair Disk (bottom right).

Why does the directory ~/var/log keep appearing?

It doesn't matter how many times I delete it, every few hours the blank directory ~/var/log gets created on my computer.
I think it may have something to do with my Brother HL2170W printer, which is connected to my wifi network. But that's just from the fruitless googling on this topic I've already done.
Does anyone know why a blank ~/var/log directory would persistently appear?

~var/log/ is a directory that holds log files. If it actually has a ~ in the name, some software is trying to write to the hidden directory, but has been miss-configured and is creating the directory you see instead of writing to /Users/username/var/log. ~/ is short for your home folder, but the program is actually writing that as part of the path name instead of being a path.

Why does my Power MAC G4 keep restarting itself after I shut it down?
This JUST started happening only 4 days ago.
Most recent installation was Limewire, but I removed it to see if this problem would go away.
I have 3 internal drives (See drive types below) that all have OS 10 on them in order to be able to boot up from either drive in the event of trouble.
However...
No matter WHICH drive I use as the start up drive... the computer STILL restarts itself after it is properly commanded to shut down.
Prior to the Limewire install... the ADOBE creative suite was installed.
There is a Lexmark X83 printer hooked to the computer, which, it seems doesn't matter if it is left on or off... the computer still restarts itself.
Any ideas?

If you still have problems, trash the following three preference files, then shut down and do a PMU reset. (PMU reset procedure for the QS is the same as is shown at the link for the Gigabit Ethernet.)

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Could, also, be failing hard drive , power supply or logic board.
You may have to make an appointment and take your iMac in to Apple or Apple authorized repair center for diagnostics and a repair estimate.
If your iMac has a 1 TB internal hard drive, it maybe a Seagate drive and maybe eligible for free replacement under the Apple Seagate 1 TB internal hard drive replacement program.
If you can get your iMac running, you need to backup all of your data ASAP!. Either backup to optical disc, flash drive/s or purchase an external hard drive for backup. You can use a data cloning program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive.
You can check for eligibility for free hard drive replacement by inputting your iMac's serial number here.

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
