Why does Activity Monitor show four processors on my MacBook Pro (Core 2 duo i5)?

My Activity Monitor displays four processors despite System Info showing only two. Any idea why that is? Nature of the i5 chip??

  • Why does Activity Monitor show traffic to my external drive?

Because one of my email accounts was hacked a couple of months ago (from my provider's end, I'm convinced), I have been monitoring network usage on my iMac using Activity Monitor. Yesterday, I noticed almost continuous use, altho "spiky".  The spikes were very regular and high and just kept going on and on.  I shut down all my apps (including mail, browser, etc.) except Photoshop.  Spikes still there.  Pulled out the Ethernet cord.  Spikes still there.  Shut down blue tooth, wi-fi - spikes still there.  Overnight, I shut down my computer.  This a.m. when I powered up, still spikes.  I noticed Time Machine was running.  Stopped it, and spikes stopped.  I have my back up on a separate external hard drive.  Why in the world would Activity Monitor show this as "network activity"?  Is there any way I can use settings that would show only "real" network activity, from outside my wi-fi, blue-tooth, and external drives? Spiky right now (can't get screen shot to upload), but more irregular. Have browser, email, and others open. Time Machine not running.
Maybe there's some other app that would help me watch my network usage in the way I would like. Please recommend.   Thx!

  • Why does the smiley images in iChat on my Macbook Pro come across as symbols to my iPad and iPhone recipients? example:  3 comes across instead of a "Heart" image

Why does the smiley images in iChat on my Macbook Pro come across as symbols to my iPad and iPhone recipients? example:  <3 comes across instead of a "Heart" image

Those chat images only work with iOS based devices.  If they're being sent to someone without an iOS device, it will go through as an ASCII character.

  • Why does my Adobe Audition keep crashing on my MacBook Pro?

Why does my Adobe Audition keep crashing on my MacBook Pro?  I've updated everything, and there are no other issues.  It is OS X and Audition CS6.  When I'm mixing a track, it will just shut down with a crash notice.  Very frustrating.

    Hi,
What is the crash notice you receive?  OS X is very good about keeping extensive, detailed crash logs.  If you launch Applications > Utilities > Console.app  and open the "User Diagnostic Reports" group on the left, can you drag the most recent Audition crash report into an e-mail to [email protected] ?  The contents of that file should make it more clear to us why Audiiton or the OS thinks a crash is happening and will help focus troubleshooting.

  • I have macbook pro core 2 duo 2.33, why can't I upgrade to mavericks

    Can someone help?
I read a list of models that can be upgraded to mavericks, macbook pro core 2 duo 2.2, 2.4  & a bunch of others can be upgraded, only the 2.33 is not on the list. why? what can I do to upgrade to mavericks? (my book meets the memory, space and software update requirement).
    thanks!!!

Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

  • Why does safari not update to 5.1 on macbook pro when running lion 10.7.1

my macmini is running lion server and safari 5.1.  my iMac is running lion and safari 5.1.  my macbook pro is running lion and safari 4.0.4 and update is stating that there are no updates available.
how does one force an update to safari 5.1 for lion in this situation?

my macbook pro is running lion and safari 4.0.4 and update is stating that there are no updates available.
Did you move or copy the Safari application? It should be in the Applications folder at the top level of your startup volume.
There is no downloadable installer for the Lion version of Safari.

  • Why does iPhoto 9.43 update crash on my MacBook Pro

I recently updated iPhoto to 9.43 on my MacBook Pro.  When I open iPhoto it tells me that it needs to upgrade the iPhoto library to work with this upgrade - when I click on Upgrade - it goes for a split second and crashes.  I have un-intalled iPhoto and re-installed another copy - same problem. Any help is appreciated.

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Why does the hard drive keep crashing on 2009 MacBook Pro?

We are now on the third hard drive, the second in 5 months.  The problem started after I dropped book on it, but no repairmen have suggested that has anything to do with it.

drop your books on it and you can crash your armature heads in the HD, ....HD are fragile.
I assume the first one died of age.....second from the book drop.......and the third?
    endlightend
Hard drives don't fail often, but they do occasionally
They fail, and often, and new ones fail a LOT more than older ones (sounds silly, but logical)
Hard Drive Warning (all makes and models)
Ironically but logical, new hard drives are far more fragile than one that has been working for several months or a couple years. So beware in your thinking that a new hard drive translates into “extremely reliable”!
Hard drives suffer from high rates of what has been termed "infant mortality". Essentially this means new drives are highly prone to failing in the first few months of usage. This is because of very minor manufacturing defects or HD platter balancing, or head and armature geometry being less than perfect; and this is not immediately obvious and can quickly manifest itself once the drive is put to work.
Hard drives that survive the first few months of use without failing are likely to remain healthy for a number of years.
Generally HD are highly prone to death or corruption for a few months, then work fine for a few years, then spike in mortality starting at 3-4 years and certainly should be considered end-of-life at 5-7+ years.
The implication of this is that you should not trust a new hard drive completely (really never completely!) until it has been working perfectly for several months.
Given the second law of thermodynamics, any and all current mfg. HD will, under perfect storage conditions tend themselves to depolarization and a point will be reached, even if the HD mechanism is perfect, that the ferromagnetic read/write surface of the platter inside the HD will entropy to the point of no return for data extraction. HD life varies, but barring mechanical failure, 3-8 years typically.

  • Macbook Pro core 2 duo 2.4ghz processor only recognized as 2.39ghz under Windows 7 in boot camp...

is this just a misread or a bad processor? I only noticed when I began checking for compatibility with a new PC game coming out, but now it has me curious, and I only bought the machine a couple months ago (my first Mac so please forgive me the noob question,) so if it's a  'bad' processor I'd like to see about fixing it.

Normal behavior from my experience. Windows 7 reads my 2.4GHz machine the same way (2.39GHz).
