Why does Adobe Media Encoder fail to export Quicktime Files?

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit PC.
While exporting the Quicktime variant of H.264 for ATSC television broadcast files, Adobe Media Encoder fails.  Non-Quicktime H.264's render correctly, but some television stations require quicktime.
Troubleshooting reveals the problem only occurs when attempting to make a 1920x1080 H.264 QuickTime file.
Using the same original file (1920x1080), Adobe Media Encoder WILL export a 720x480/486 H.264 MOV file.
More interesting still, it will ALSO export at 1280x720.
Testing this information to it's limits, I found that the cutoff for a successful render is between a frame size of 1610x906 and 1609x905.
Useless, random sizes, I know... but that's the breaking point for Adobe Media Encoder CS6 (6.0.3.1 to be precise) and H.264 Quicktime files.
Others are having a similar problem:

I'm trying to make a file with the extension ".MOV" using AME's "HD 1080i 29.97, H.264, AAC 48kHz" preset.  AME fails every time with the following message:
"Encoding Failed
Export Error
Error compiling movie.
Unknown error."
Any other file extension (MP4, M4V, etc.) renders fine.  The issue seems only to happen when attempting to make an MOV file.  It doesn't seem to matter whether I use AME's built-in preset, or customize my own render settings--the problem always happens with any MOV larger than the size I mentioned above.
All of this used to work just fine on the same machine 2 years back with Adobe CS5, previous version of windows and QuicTime.  I've been all through the Adobe and Windows possibilities, so I'm grabbing at straws here with QuickTime maybe having something to do with it.
Interesting.
Would you happen to know if Adobe has made any changes to its manner of muxing long-address MPEG-4 AVC data to the MOV file container? Since the MP4 and M4V files encode properly, have you tried opening these files in a media player and simply using the "Save As..." option to move the date to an MOV file container without transcoding audio or video data? I.e., is there any obvious relationship between the size of the MOV file encode (less than/greater than 4 GB) as a function of the resolution "break point" previously discovered?

Does Adobe Media Encoder save/export in swf format?
    If yes how?
    Thanks

SWF is not a video format. That is why the Flash Video (FLV and F4V) formats exist.
The are very inefficient ways of making SWF behave in some ways like a video format, such as creating a SWF file that uses a sequence of JPEG or PNG image frames, but such files are enormous and have other problems. After Effects has this option, which was created before Flash Video (F4V and FLV) formats were invented, but that does not mean that a modern video encoder like AME should add this very obsolete feature.
The way that people create video for Flash Player is to create F4V or FLV files. You can embed or link those in a SWF file using Flash Professional.

  • Adobe Media Encoder won't take mov. files!?

My Adobe Media Encoder will not take mov. files! That should not be a problem, right? When I click the Add-button the mov. files is not listed up unless I choose to show all files. And when selecting the file, the program says the file could not be imported -_-
Probably a stupid newbie mistake, but can anyone tell me what it is?
I have downloaded the latest flash CS4 trial package, which include the encoder, and am trying to encode files provided with adobe's book "Adobe flash CS4 professional - Classroom in a book"

I found the answer. I needed to install Quicktime lol

  • Exporting in Adobe Media Encoder fails in CS4 after CS3 is removed.

There's an issue with Adobe Media Encoder in CS4 where encoding will fail after CS3 is uninstalled.
If you never had CS3 installed on your machine - no problem.
If you never had CS3 and CS4 installed at the same time - no problem.
If you had CS3 and CS4 installed concurrently, then uninstalled CS3 - Houston, you have a problem.
You will need to uninstall CS4 and then reinstall CS4.
    The error message is:
    Encoding Failed
Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted.
One more thing I forgot to mention, this is a Win-only issue.

    >Does anyone understand this?
    Simple:
    1. Open a Windows Explorer window and navigate to the folder that contains "dynamiclinkmanager.exe"
    2. Open a
second Windows Explorer window and navigate to the folder that contains "Premiere.exe"
    3. Arrange the windows side by side.
    4. Right-click on "Premiere.exe" and drag to the first explorer window, targeting between the files so as to avoid any specific file.
    5. Release the right-hand mouse button.
    6. Select "create shortcut here" from the pop-up menu.

  • Adobe Media Encoder Fail - need help please

I keep getting a failed error when trying to use Adobe Media Encoder.
I open up my premiere project and select the comp I want.  I switch the format to Quicktime, select h.264 from preset.  Hit the start button and I get the failed sound/icon.
    2 questions:
    1. My comp is 1920x1080 but when I go in it automatically has it as 720... why is it not recognizing the comp size?
    2. Is there a way to fix this error?  It seems to export occassionally to my C drive (which is not raid) but it fails to my F drive (Raid 10).  But usually if I export as a wmv or something smaller it exports fine to F.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you I had to go out of town.  Error message doesn't say anything to me... maybe to you.  I'm not really sure what to set for "Field Type" so I just leave it at Lower.  Not sure if I should set it to higher or progressive instead.

  • Adobe Media Encoder fails on launch

Every time I go to render media, when Adobe Media Encoder launches, the file fails. I get a non-descript dialog that says "Installation error: Please ensure this product has been installed properly." This happens immediately after I start the AME queue and it begins to load the .prproj file (which is already open in Premiere Pro, since that's where I exported from in the first place).
I ran Adobe Updater and got the newest version of everything, except for the latest CS4 "Services Update" which fails to install properly. I've tried that update numerous times (after restart, after repairing permissions) and it seems to fail every time. I didn't think this was relevant but thought I'd mention it anyway.
I'm on a Quad-Core Xenon Intel 2x2.5 Ghz tower, with 12GB RAM and 78+ GB free disk space. I'm trying to render a portion of a project, this segment is about a min and a half long. I'm on Mac OS 10.6.7 (latest update), using Premiere Pro CS4.2.1 (003 MC: 166418) and Adobe Media Encoder 4.2.0.006.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you have done a complete reinstall, and ran the Adobe CleanScript CS5 (that is the latest), then a Repair Install should not be needed - it would do nothing.
For info, to do a Repair Install, one would insert the installation disc. When the installer module has loaded, it will survey one's system. If it finds the Adobe program(s), it will ask if you wish to Uninstall, or Repair Install. When one chooses Repair Install, it surveys the system again, for that program, and will replace, or correct any issues. This is usually MUCH faster, than doing an uninstall/reinstall.
Good luck, and not sure what else could be the cause.

  • Adobe Media Encoder for AE export creates unwanted black background on load in white background

Hi. I have a seamless white website design. I added a white background to my AE file and also exported to Adobe Media Encoder with a white background, but I'm still getting a flash of black when the video loads. I have read discussions of this being a "bug" of the media encoder, but curious if anyone found a workaround. It's distracting to have the back load to black and then change to white, so I appreciate any recommendations. For now, my only idea it to re-record the video after the black flash, using a screen capture app, but this seems tedious and does not produce optimum results. Am I missing something?

    Thanks for your reply!
I tried using Quicktime with PNG and it created a big file (1.18GB for a 1 minute long clip) that doesn't play back nicely in PPro unfortunately. But I then tried rendering the clip using a lossy format, H.264, in AE and it's playing back ok in PPro! I will just do that for the rest of the clips and hope that this is finally resolved. Many thanks for the tip!
Out of curisoty, do you know what might be causing the problem when I use Media Encoder?

  • Adobe Media Encoder - Issue with exporting file

When I send a file to Adobe Media Encoder and I hit queue I get an error, "could not read from source file, please check if it has been moved or deleted".
The source file location that the AME is trying to use is C:\Users\User Name\AppData\local\temp\file name.prproj
    Is this file location correct?
Why is not using my scratch disk file?
How do I change the file that AME is trying to use?
I have not been able to export a video since I have purchased Premiere CS4.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

If you want a quick work-around do not try exporting from Premiere, just save and exit the project after you are through editing.  Open AME and under File, select Add Premiere Pro Sequence, browse for your project file and click on it once--have patience Adobe's feedback here is lousy--your sequence will finally appear in the Sequence window, click on it and then click on OK.  Select your Format,.Preset and Output location.  If you want to tweak your settings just click on the Settings button.  Then hit Start Queue.
Do you have the project on an external removable drive?

  • Adobe Media Encoder Fails to convert the H264 movs from may Canon 5D mark 2, to Cineform AVI's

It fails no mater what codec settings I have tried.....forcing me to use the HD Link that came with NeoScene( Cineform)....Once converted by HDLink, the Adobe Media Encoder is fine transcoding the Cineform avi's to any format it normally works with.
While not a huge problem--certainly I "can" always use HDlink to convert the mov's....I would like to get this fixed.....
And then there is the issue of what should be the appropriate way to metalog when I dump 300 new clips into the system that were just shot.....Of course it is easy with the mov files, but really I would think they should all be transcoded to Cineform AVI's before doing anything...Thoughts?
    Dan Volker

I'm not even sure if this qualifies as a "bug". The only thing at issue (if I understand correctly) is that AME is failing to recognize the PAR of the file. AFAIK, there is no "standard" for flagging PAR in AVI files (aside from DV footage, which can have simple boolean 16x9 flag).
Adobe has their RIFF headers -- but this is by no means a standard across the entire industry. There is no indication that your file contains any PAR information whatsoever.
If you open the file in Premiere, you should be able to right-click on the clip in the Project window, go to Interpret Footage and select the correct PAR of 1.333.
The problem is that the standalone version of AME does not have an "Interpret Footage" option to override PAR assumptions for AVI files, etc. that are added to queue. This is a good idea for a feature request for future versions of AME.

  • Why wont Adobe Media Encoder open?

every time I try to open it it says: "Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014.0 has stopped working." And i have tried exporting from Premiere Pro, opening it directly, and all of the above. Please Help!

Have you ever been able to launch AME before?  Did it stop working suddenly or never launch?
Please try deleting two folders "Media Cache" and "Media Cache Files" from <OS drive>:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common.  Then, please hold shift + launch.

  • Adobe Media Encoder Doesn't recognize .prproj files

I am absolutely losing it here. I have read posts on various forums for hours, not only can I not find a solution, I can't find anyone who has this same problem. I'm running CS4 on a Mac and when I try to export from premiere, Adobe Media Encoder opens, then nothing happens. The file is never added to the queue, it just sits there. If I open Adobe Media Encoder manually then click add and try to select a premiere project, the file is grayed out. I changed the dropdown menu for file types to be "all types" and I click on a premiere file and it just pops up an error message saying the file cannot be imported. Same thing if I try to drag the file in. I can do absolutely nothing with AME.
I've seen plenty of people saying AME crashes midway through rendering or people saying they get an error saying to check if the source has been moved or deleted. I don't get any of that. I have nothing. It doesn't show up in the log or errors in any way.
The most annoying thing is that it used to work. I exported several files this way. I did not change any settings though, I even went and restored all the default settings. Still nothing. Its not just the one file, I've tried lots of different files, none work. I even reinstalled premiere, after effects, and AME and nothing changed.
I'm at a complete loss and I need to get work done and I wish I could post lots and lots of curse words here...

    Hi,
I use CS3 on a PC so I've no experience with mac problems...
However, even if I had a mac I would ask you first a little more about your computer....
I have heard of memory chips going bad on a computer and suddenly that causes things not to work...but there's no sense just guessing...
Try to tell as much as you can about your computer and about the assets you are using.
Since it used to work and now it doesn't , can you think of anything you added or changed on the computer ?
Sometimes adding software or codec packs or hardware can sorta change things on your computer enough to make weird things happen...
Anyway, give as much info as you can
I think there's threads here about what sort of info would be best to supply if you don't know much about your computer ...

  • Adobe Media Encoder won't open MPEG2 files

    Hi All,
I'm hoping you can help me, I'm having some trouble with Adobe Media Encoder CS4, it won't open any MPEG2 files I throw at it.
They all open fine in Media Player Classic, MPC-HC and VideoLan, so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong.
    Any ideas greatfully appreciated.

Jim Simon, one came from a creative production house and a couple  came from a website that provides various videos in various formats for  testing video players.
Thanks for the information Colin Brougham.  Can any MPEG 2 importers/decoders be used?
I'm  new to AME so perhaps I don't understand how it works entirely but on  the AME information page on the Adobe website it says that MPEG2 files  can be imported, and there is no mention of only being able to do so  with certain Adobe products (unless I missed it).
However,  if I can open and play MPEG2 Files in various media players, surely  there is a way to use the decoders from those to work with AME?
    All advice greatly appreciated.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS5 hangs when adding files of varying HD resolutions.

I've seen questions similar to this related to CS4 but never explained very well, and my CS4 for mac worked fine.  I am unsure if this is a new problem or a windows specific problem but here is the situation, if you need more information I will gladly provide it.
For the past week or so I have been encoding 1920x1080i mov files (h.264/aac) to 1280x720p (vp6/mp3) flvs.  When I stick to that single HD format in the AMC processing que everything works great. However, when I add older HD content into the AMC que, content with non-standard presets, the program hangs.  I tried to import about 15 files last night and the program just sat there all night in a '...NOT RESPONDING' state.  The video's have different audio and video settings and it's little difficult to pinpoint exactly what they were.  Some are 1440x1080, some are 1280x900, some have PCM audio some of mp3.
Now I temporarily resolved this issue by simply using cs4 master on my mac pro which worked great.  However I have noticed a huge speed increase in CS5 64bit AMC.  It takes 2-3 hours to encode 1 flash video on my mac pro (dual quad core xeon 2.9Ghz/32GB ram) with CS4.  It takes ~20 minutes on my windows 7 station (single core 2 quad 3Ghz/8GB ram) with CS5.
    How to replicate:
If I drop a single file into the AMC CS5 que, regardless of the resolution, frame rate, or sound codec; it will import.  If I then add another file with a different resolution AMC will hang and become non-responsive.  It never crashed but I can't wait 12+ hours to see if it accepted a job or not.  As I said before this problem was not observed on CS4 for mac - it worked flawlessly, albeit a little slow.
    Software used:
Adobe Media Encoder CS5 windows 64bit
Adobe Media Encoder CS4 mac 32bit
    System specs:
    Windows 7 home:
    Core 2 quad 3Ghz
    8GB ram
    80GB SSD x25-m
    nVidia Quadro 580
    OSX 10.6.3:
    Dual Xeon 2.99Ghz
    32GB ram
    4 7200 disks in 4TB raid 0
    Radeon HD 2600
    Matrox MAX h.264 compressor card
Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you for your time

    Hi Michael,
Sorry to hear you're having problems with Adobe Media Encoder.  I'd like to get some more information about the problem so I can better understand your workflow, and potentially try to recreate the problem.  For what it's worth, I often import files of different resolutions without any problem, so I want to find out what's different about how you're using AME.
Apologies for the long list of questions; the small details can be important.
-- After you import the first file, what else do you do in AME?  Change the preset?  Change the settings?  Change the output destination?
-- What are the properties of the files that are causing the problem?  You said it happens on "non-standard" files, but can you describe the specifications for one or more files that cause the problem?  Please include file type, length, frame rate, frame dimensions, field order (if applicable), alpha mode (if applicable), and audio type and rate.  If you know more the bitrate, both video and audio, that would be nice, too.
-- If any of the files are small enough, could you post a couple online that I could try on my machine?
-- How were these files generated?  What application created them?
-- Where are the files stored? A local drive, a network drive, a removeable drive (USB or Firewire), etc.?
-- Which Adobe application or suite do you have installed?  AME a limited set of options if you're using Flash or Web Premium compared to Master Collection, Production Premium, Premiere Pro, or After Effects.

Hello, this is terrible problem, which i found in CS 6 softwares ...
solution i found only working, is uninstall and reinstall full package.. but it is not all,
you need to do BRAND NEW admin account in windows, and install it there.
that means, i could not export after repair from encoder in my original account never more (!!)   .. this is really terrible way how to repair this issue, because :
1.by reinstalling of software, client WASTE HIS TIME
2.by necessity to begin work in another windows profile you again WASTE YOUR TIME because of learning and migrating all other profile modifications, which i see really unaccpetable. Adobe means, this solution of repair is ok, and they did not do till today any steps of creating some "clever" solution.
I ask everybody, who will meet this issue in future, guys, please, complain about this situation, give "BUG Report" to them, and write "feature request" to them , in the way of creating some repair tool, which check actual  "broken" connections between encoder and premiere, which refuses to "take material" from it and encode, and REPAIR it automatically..
I am not IT, but ..does it seems so hard to create this ? Adobe IT developers should know their systems, and should create such utility tool really easy.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. i export anything by button "queue" from premiere to Encoder
    2. Encoder will start encoding
    3. Encoder does not show the window of media encoding (down left )
    Results: sound of sheep occur,
in encoding error file is this reason of canceling the encoding :
    01/02/2014 10:10:48 AM : Encoding Failed
Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted.
History of this problem and detailed description, HOW i did "repair" this. With wasting of app 2,5 days of my working time :
    1. after repairing "error 5" problem , i solved it by reinstalling the suite from the new admin user profile (profile B) .
I continued my work on my normal working windows profile . (profile A)
Every cooperation (AE+Pr, export media via "queue" to Encoder) was working fine . . .
    2. suddenly it stop working (without knowing any possible reason - i did not do installations )
and showed in error export log file :
"Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted."
    3.repair via procedure(procedure "a"):
i did this procedure on the profile B (profile from last time installation of repairing problem error 5)
    I did these steps :
    a-uninstall master coll suite
b-i used Adobe cleaner tool (remove ALL)
    c-removed raw directories in locations
    •C:\Program Files\Adobe
    •C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe
    •C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
    •C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Adobe
    •C:\ProgramData\Adobe
d-removed these links from registry file
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe
    •HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe
    •HKEY_LOCAL_MACH INE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Adobe
    •HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Wow6432Node\Adobe
    e-restarted the PC
f- newly installed the Master Coll CS6
    g-update the software
result of repair of "3" : problem still exists
4.Ok i find out after coordination with support, it should have been created  ANOTHER NEW admin account.
4a:so i did the same procedure (uninstalling) in profile B
4b: and then i created brand new admin profile (profile C)for INSTALLATION of software
4c: restarted the pc (and did not updated it yet)
    result :
==exporting of any sequence/raw/AE link video material from premiere via "queue" (Encoder) (profile C) : export WORKS
==exporting of any sequence/raw/AE link video material from premiere via "queue" (Encoder) (profile B) : export WORKS
==exporting of any sequence/raw/AE link video material from premiere via "queue" (Encoder) (profile A) : export DOES NOT WORK ! ! !
(in profile A, is possible to export some raw video material in encoder which is imported to it via "drag and drop)
problem i see:, i have my basic profile A, which i am interested to work, because of all my directory modifications are in there..
this issue should be some "broken" connections between encoder and premiere, which refuses to "take material" from it and encode.
    what i expect :
to get from Adobe some repair tool, which automatically checks these connections and repair if necessary, without necessity of founding the new profile and reinstallation of whole software.. this is madness !
what i do NOT expect from Adobe:
to get from Adobe advice of kind : you have to reinstall full software in new admin profile. sorry , we do not know the solution, because we do not know, how do behave our software.

  • Premiere Pro/Media Encoder fail when exporting something with AE linked?

Hey all, I do some video production work for a university, and we're running into some problems when trying to export all the videos from a particularly large course.  We haven't run into this issue before so I'm hoping someone might have knowledge of it and can help me out.
    Here's some background-
I'm trying to export videos, about 20 minutes each.  Each video has an opening sequence and closing sequence that were created in After Effects and are Dynamic linked in the right spots on the timeline.
We're encoding with Vimeo HD 720p 29.97 settings.
Media Encoder gets through one pass seemingly just fine, and then a little after halfway through encoding it stops (doesn't crash, just stops encoding any further) and crashes when attempting to stop the queue.
It's a pain to export from After Effects and re drag in all the sequences, so our workflow keeps all exporting Premiere -> Media Encoder.
EDIT: Can't believe I forgot to mention this- works fine exporting directly from a timeline in Premiere, it's only when Media Encoder is used that issues arise- but it's unfeasible to export 30 videos from the timeline.
EDIT: Done some more testing over the course of the day.  I can add After Effects files to a AME queue and encode them with the Vimeo settings and it makes it through both passes, correctly exporting the videos.  It just doesn't work when those same compositions are exported as linked compositions in a Premiere Pro timeline.
Some things I've tried with no success:
Exporting the After Effects files separately does not work, it hangs even if only exporting the after effects segments.(20 seconds each).
I've turned off CUDA and done software only, still hangs.
I've tried dragging/adding from Media Encoder/any number of different workflows to get the sequences from Premiere to After Effects.
I've tried exporting with different settings: (e.g. non Vimeo HD 720p 29.97), still hangs (doesn't even start encoding, doesn't get halfway).
    Any ideas?

I experienced this at one point.  Searching the WEB I saw suggestions that there was a problem with a recent version of Quicktime.  (I have no idea why the quicktime player would have an impact.)  However, reverting to an earlier version of Quicktime fixed the problem.  Search this board using quicktime as a search phase.  The quicktime web site allows you to download the earlier versions.  I'm not at my editing machine, but I believe that I am at version 7.5.2.
