Why does Airport Extreme frequently lose connection to ISP?

Today my Airport Extreme purchased in March 2011 has lost connection to the internet 4 times.  I have had to reboot it each time to resume using the internet.  Does this indicate a problem with this new airport exteme.  If so do I return it to an Apple Store for repair or replacement?

Possibly, but it may also indicate that the communication between the modem and the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is faulty.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Why does AirPort Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?

Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.

  • Airport Extreme intermittently loses connection with Internet?

I have an Airport Extreme connected to a router that is connected to our cable modem. Internet connection is fine, but the Airport Extreme will intermittently lose connection with the Internet and shows a solid amber light. Turning the Airport Extreme off and then on again will resolve the issue, however, this happens about once per week (at different days/times) and would like to ensure a consistent connection even when I'm not at home. (We are thinking of installing a lighting control system that depends upon a consistent wireless connection to work properly, even when we aren't home to restart the Airport Extreme). Please advise on what the trouble might be and how we can get a permanent resolution to the issue.

Is your Extreme an 802.11g (domed-shape) or 802.11n (squarish) model? Do you have the Extreme connected to the other router by Ethernet? Finally, is the Extreme configured as a bridge, i.e., Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)?

  • Why does airport extreme need hard reset after power outage

Airport extreme is unresponsive after interruptions in power and requires a hard reset to get working again.  It will also freeze during heavy usage from multiple computers and then a hard reset is necessary to get it working again.  It is becoming a chore.

The obvious answer is that if you are using firmware 7.5.2, downgrade to 7.4.2.
Otherwise if you can simulate a power fail by pulling the plug and still have the problem then
If you are still under warranty, take it back...

  • Why does AirPort Extreme intermittently shutdown?

My AirPort Extreme (Mod A1521) shuts down intermittently for no apparent reason.  I was purchased at Best Buy in May 2014. I started noticing this issue a couple of weeks ago.  I have not changed my setup or made any modifications to my network or peripherals.  I am able to reboot the device without issue.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated . . . thank you!

If the AirPort Extreme shuts down, and you have checked the power cord, wall AC jack, etc. to verify that all is well......then the AirPort Extreme is defective and in need of replacement.
Take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly to start the process.

  • Built in Airport Extreme constantly loses connection

    Hi,
I know a lot has been written about the recent airport firmware update where people have lost their reliable connections and I think I have suffered with this as well. My Netgear modem/router sits downstairs and my mac upstairs so there is a distance of about 30ft max (direct of course a bit less). When I purchased my iMac 2.5weeks ago I also logged into the internet without a problem and since the update it's all gone. My windows laptop can connect from exactly the same place and so when I moved my iMac to within 4 ft of the router it worked. Of course having an iMac in your hallway is not the best solution.
So eventually my question, what sort of range does the built-in airport have?
I can connect sometimes but it will go away again and maybe come back...it's a bit like a sulky teenager. Even last night I did a speed test on both the mac and windows laptop and the laptop got double the download speed as the Mac! That's got to be a first.
I would like to move the netgear upstair but my phone engineer says the best speeds I can achieve is through the main telephone socket.

I am having the problem of intermittent loss of signal even when I am sitting right next to the airport. I have 2 macs running off the airport and I have no problems for hours on end and then suddenly, my brand new macbook drops the connection and doesn't show the airport listed at all. If I wait a few minutes, it is back in full force to be selected but i must go in and select it. My old imac is downstairs further from the airport than my macbook and it never loses the signal. It will show the airport when the macbook does not.

  • Why does the new touch lose connectivity to my wi-fi network

So I got the new Ipod touch and when I got it home and connected it to my home wi-fi network with no trouble. Then a few hours later it was connected to the network but it would seemed as though it was not. Kinda like the network didnt have a internet connection. So I reset the cable modem, the wi-fi router and the Ipod. That fixed the problem until a few hours later and it has become a constant problem. Anytime I want to use any online app (Siri, weather, email, message, facetime, itunes, app store) Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this?

It is the router asking permission to access keychain.

  • Why does apple tv 2 lose connection with netgear router through a wired connection?

I have Apple TV 2 connected to a Netgear wnder3700 through a wired connection.  The Apple TV is up-to-date.  However, from day 1 (before firmware updates and currently) apple tv will lose internet connection.  All other devices on the network remain connected.  the only solution is to physically unplug the the apple tv and let it reconnect on reboot.  Same issue exists on a wireless connection.

I would update the firmware of the router

  • Does AirPort Extreme work with AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit

Does AirPort Extreme Base Station work with the AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit? I want to wirelessly play my music from my computer on my stereo.

Does AirPort Extreme Base Station work with the AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit?
If you are asking if the AEBS can connect to your Stereo using the cables in the AirPort Express Stereo Connection Kit, the answer is No. Only the Airport Express is designed for this purpose.
However, the AEBS is used as the central base station for any number of remote Airport Express units which can use the Airport Express Connection Kit to connect to your stereo.

  • Why does my mouse keep losing connection every minute

why does my mouse keep losing connection every minute, its not the batteries

I'm having the same issue.  Every so often it loses connection then re establishes. This goes on repeatedly.
If you change batteries while the computer is still active then it takes for ever to re connect.

  • Using AirPort Extreme hub to connect to stereo

Is it possible to use a second Airport Extreme hub to connect to stereo speakers?
If it is, what kind of cable might one use to do this?
    Thanks
    Charles

No, the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have any type of audio output.
Are you thinking of the AirPort Express which does have an audio output?

  • Does Airport Extreme support Static Routes?

I have client using an Airport Extreme as their Router. They currently connect to another device outside their network using AppleTalk.
It is planned to put this device onto TCP/IP but on a different subnet (e.g. their subnet is 192.168.5.X and the device will be on say 192.168.25.X). Does Airport Extreme support (like other Routers) the ability to set up a static link to a device on a different subnet (can’t find any information in a doco or the utility) or do they need to replace this with a “real“ router?

Sure, I could do something like route add -net 10.100.10 192.168.0.100 on every client machine on the subnet, but there is no such way to configure a web cam and similiar devices
    Any idea, Apple?

  • Does Airport Extreme support Bethere.co.uk?

    Hi,
I would like to buy an Airport Extreme router to connect it with my bethere.co.uk ADSL 2+ connection. Currently, I'm using bethere's modem but would like to change to Airport Extreme since it supports 802.11n. Is this possible, if yes, how do I do that?
    Thanks!

The Airport Extreme Base Station does not have a built in DSL modem. Therefore, you must continue to use whatever DSL modem you are currently using (which hopefully has an ethernet interface for connecting to computers), and cable it to the Airport Extreme Base Station's ethernet WAN port.

Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again.  If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced.
