Why does Airport take so long to connect to the wireless LAN?

I have one of the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros. I notice that whenever I wake up my Mac from sleeping, it takes a good 10 seconds for it to find and connect to the LAN. By contrast, Windows computers seem to find it and connect almost instantly.
Aside from having WEP encryption, there's nothing special about my LAN. It's a Linksys WRT54G, and I'm not hiding the SSID. Also, my home network is at the top of my list of preferred networks.
Once connected, I don't notice any problems. I haven't tried any specific tests of local throughput, but web browsing and other internet traffic with the Mac is no slower than the top speed of my broadband connection.
Also, I've talked with other Mac users, and they don't report wireless connections taking so long to be established.
So, what's going on here and how can I fix it?
Thanks!

My guess is that your connection will appear even faster, although I have no explanation for that, only my experience since I installed the same update.
Yes, your MBP firmware appears to be up to date, although the documentation is confusing. If your firmware wasn't updated at all, it would probably end with 00, instead of 01.
Software Updates needed for Macs will appear in Software Update's automatic offerings. I'm not sure what might have happened with the AirPort Extreme Update, although I suspect it might have only been called for if a Mac was using an Apple Base Station.
If you use Software Update to do your updates, you can check the Software Update panel of System Preferences, and on the "Installed Updates" pane, scroll down and check to see what was installed and when. I installed the same AirPort update the day after release - but then I was having an issue and was checking Software Update every day for that update to show up for my iMac Core Duo.
[I'm not sure that firmware updates are listed there at all, perhaps only software updates.]
To check for all downloadable updates on your own, click on "Downloads" in the Support menu bar at the top of this page. That's where firmware updates will appear if they are not included by Software Update. The last firmware updates have been appearing in Software Update. The first in 2006 didn't, but that created so much confusion among new users that I have a feeling that Apple has changed the procedure to automate it rather than have it be search and find:) Only time will tell.
Your mention of your printer - you could check to see if Samsung has a firmware update for your printer, but no, you can't use a mixed network, you need everything connected to be using same encryption method with same network name and same password.
I believe I understand the new AirPort Extreme "n" Base Station will support two separate simultaneous networks like that, one on the 5MHz band and second on the 2.4MHz band, but the older equipment can't do that.

  • Why does it take so long for a home video to buffer?

I recorded a video on my canon digital camera, transferred it to my iMac and then tried to watch it on my TV with my Apple TV, but a 3 min. Video took about 10 to 15 min. To buffer. It finally played. Now I'm waiting on the next on to finish buffer, and play. It's 10 min. long and it's been buffering for about 30 min. Why does it take so long?

Not on the LAN - traditionally internet speeds were rate limiting - these days it's possible the LAN connection is especially with multiple wifi signal paths.
Unless some app is transcoding the camera video on the fly I'd be surprised if LAn slownwss alone would cause these issues.
What's the camera and what is the recorded video format?

    Good Afternoon Geraldine,
I understand you are wondering why you did not receive an email receipt instantly for an iBook purchase made on March 2nd.  Is this the first time you've noticed a delay?  I would suggest contacting the iTunes Support team to report the issue.  With your permission, they can access your account and possibly shed some light on this particular transaction.

  • On my mac why does it take so long to send a Email with an attachment, on my mac why does it take so lone to send a Email with an attachment

on my mac why does it take so long to send a Email with an attachment, on my mac why does it take so lone to send a Email with an attachment

It depends on the size of the attachment and the speed of your internet connection.
Next time you send an email with an attachment do these two things:
In Apple Mail (I assume you are using Apple Mail), under the Window menu select Activity. Arrange the Activity window so you can see it.
Then open the separate application located in the Utilities folder called "Activity Monitor" and arrange it so you can see it at the same time as the Activity window in Mail.
In Activity Monitor program, select the tab labeled "Network." Watch the "Data sent/sec" portion. Then send your email, while watching the Mail Activity window and also the Activity Monitor program window Data sent/sec area.
You should see the mail being sent with a progress bar in the Mail Activity window and also you should be able to see how many bytes/sec or KB/sec or MB/sec your internet connection is giving you in the Activity Monitor window.
Example: my internet provider gives me about 20 Megabits per second download and 5 Megabits per second upload. To convert these to Megabytes per second (Activity Monitor shows things in bytes, not bits), simply divide by 10 (not the exact thing to do, but close enough). So I get 0.5 Megabytes per second upload speed. When I send a file that is 5 Megabytes in size, it takes about 10 seconds if I am getting the full upload bandwidth. If I am getting less than that (which sometimes happens), it will take proportionately more time. Either way, you can see what is happening with these two windows.
If your internet provider is supposed to give you, say, 5 Megabits/sec upload (0.5 Megabytes/sec), but you see only say, 5 KB/sec (=0.005 Megabytes/sec), sent in Activity Monitor, then your emails are taking a long time because you are getting only abut 1/100 the speed you should be. You might want to check with your internet provider about that.

  • Why does syncing take so long? 2GB is taking 215 hours

Why does syncing take so long? 2GB is taking 215 hours

Thats a fair enough comment, but I would have thought that syncing a mere 2GB of data, 215 hours seems a bit ridiculous, especially as it's not explained very well on the Adobe Cloud exactly what syncing is and how it benefits me. My internet connection is BT broadband and my download speed is 10 Mb/s, upload is 0.261 Mb/s crap I know.

  • Why does it take so long to upload pictures from iphote to AppleTV

Why does it take so long to upload pictures from iphoto to AppleTV?   It takes hours to see a folder created in iPhoto to finally display on AppleTV.

Do you mean that you are importing music from an audio CD into iTunes?  If so, the most likely causes of slow speeds are limitations of the CD drive you are using and/or the CD being dirty or damaged. If you turn on error correction within iTunes this can slow down the import process if it is repeatedly re-reading the same data before it gets a repeatable result (though it is a good idea to always have error connection enabled as the alternative is audible errors in the results).  Depending on which system I'm using typical CD reading speeds vary between 5x and 12x (so a nominal 74 min CD imports in 6-15 min).
Importing a CD has nothing to do with your internet connection (which is only used to look up the song titles, etc. before you start importing).
However, if you are downloading music from the iTunes store or another internet retailer such as Amazon, I'd expect an album's worth of m4a/mp3 files to download in 1-2 minutes on a typical broadband connection.  If this is what you're doing, and its taking an hour to complete, then there's a problem with the broadband connection itself or with how your PC is set up to use it.

  • Why does it take so long to load a web page on my iPad

Why does it take so long to load a web page on my new ipad wifi

This is probably not a problem with the iPad, but with the wi-fi. If your internet connection and/or wi-fi speeds are slow, then loading web pages will be slow. If I was you, I would research different kinds of wireless routers to find the fastest one in your price range, and also research different kinds of modems.

  • Why does syncing take SO LONG?

I'm transferring 1K songs to iPhone and I'm only on number 58 and it's been going on 30 minutes. This is going to take hours! Why does this take so long? Isn't it just like copying to a hard drive? This is crazy!

make sure that you are connected directly to the main USB source on the computer... the iPhone is finicky about syncing through a hub replicator.

  • Why does it take so long for itunes to sync my iphone? Its been on step 2 for hours

Why does it take so long for itunes to sync my iphone? Its been on step 2 for hours
I just got the iphone 4s...I have had two other iphones in the past and they did not take this long to sync. This is my first time connecting it to my computer.

8 hours later and it is reading "finishing sync" which I believe is past Step 5 and I have no idea when the "finish" will occur and am afraid to disconnect/interrupt the sync. The current version of itunes (11) is installed and syncing Microsoft Outlook (about 400 contacts, calendar, etc) for the first time.  What should I do next besides wait?

  • Why does it take so long to load a tv show?

why does it take so long to load a tv show or movie when i am connected to a wifi other than my home?

Very probably because many devices are sharing the same Internet pipe and you're getting only a portion of the total capacity.
I suggest that you obtain the free "SpeedTest" app and compare data rates at home and elsewhere.

  • Why does it take so long to download software like Adobe to a Mac laptop

I just recently bought a MacBook Pro and I am installing Adobe Reader and it is taking sooooo long to install.  I have been installing since 8:30 pm and its now 10:27 and its only up to 42%.  Why does it taking so long?  Also I have downloading other software and it took forever as well.  Why does it take son long to download software to the Mac?

    Something is obviously wrong.
Stop the download and take the machine back to Apple as you have 90 days free support.
They will test the machine to see if it's a hardware issue or a problem with the Mac itself.
If they say it's fine and it surfs/downloads fast on their connections, then it's likely something wrong with your home network or router.
Did you by any chance change your DNS settings in Network?
This could be the problem, delete what you entered and reboot the machine, the ISP's default DNS settings will return.
To OpenDNS? On the router? Are you using your own router of it someone managing it for you?
Are you over 21 and can you legally surf for adult sites? If some sort of filtering is on, this could be the cause.
OpenDNS doesn't have servers everywhere, so it causes certain downloads from Akamai servers to come from a lot farther away than your ISP servers.
Have you run Internet speed tests? Using other machines on your network are they fast?
Is your router or modem old? Did you power them off, wait 30 seconds and power them back on?
It's rather a lot to try to figure out network issues, you may have to call in a local professional.

  • What's wrong with this Forum? Why does Adobe take so long to reply to posts?!

What's wrong with this Forum? Why does Adobe take so long to reply to posts?!
This is actually "specific" to this Photoshop Forum.
I typically get responses back from other Adobe forum promptly.
    Chime in.

The Adobe engineering folks DO duck in here from time to time - and that's a BLESSING!  Please name any other big company where you get to interact with the engineers AT ALL.  I can't.  But I suspect the engineers actually have a lot oof real work to do, and their time here is necessarily limited.
Your comments are more along the line of "I pay a huge amount, for that I expect better support".  These are very valid comments.  But reality is different from what we may expect, and this forum is not the place to expect Adobe support participation AT ALL.  In fact, the technical support people at Adobe often direct users to come here (something I've always found amusing).
At the higher level, Adobe may simply not be spending enough on support for literally millions of users.  Is is greed or smart business to try to minimize support cost?  That's up for individuals to decide.
I suggest you write a snail-mail letter to the Adobe president if you're not getting the support you need.

  • Why does it take so long to recognize my camera?

I have a Canon EOS Rebel XS.  When I plug it in, iPhoto jumps up and is in front on the screen, as it should, but then it takes 8 or 10 minutes for it to be identified and booted up into the sidebar. I just watch the wheels turn and the red light flicker, but it takes EIGHT or MORE minutes to be recognized!! And, sometimes the camera times itself out. Here is my question . . . WHY WHY WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG TO BE RECOGNIZED?!?!?!!? I could deal with 30 seconds, but this is just ridiculous. Is this a Canon issue? A driver issue? Heaven forbid, an Apple issue?  Does anybody have any insight on this or the same kind of experience?
    Mike

Next time you import reformat the card with the Camera - remember this will erase the card, so make sure you've emptied it first. Oh, and the use of block capitals is very impressive. Doesn't make it look like a tantrum at all.

Why does it take so long to download movies

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this atwww.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • Why does it take so long to upload? Am I doing something wrong?

At the moment it takes a few hours(!) to upload about ten pages on one site. Just pictures. iPhoto used to publish within five minutes. Why does it take so long? Am I doing something wrong, like having it on a weird setting? It looks beautiful, but not very impressed with iWeb functionality as of yet.

don't know if i can downgrade the file sizes, am just selecting the photos in iphoto and then clicking iweb so it should do it automatically. it shouldn't take hours though should it? the site address is web.mac.com/adilamin/iWeb but there is no problem with accessing the site and loading the pics, its just the uploading from iWeb.
