Why does Aperture implement full screen mode differently to other Apple software?

Yes I know I always was pretty thick, and things haven't improved as senility draws nigh, but I have not yet found a way to run Aperture as I would like to.
What I want to do is to run the NON full-screen interface in a manner that occupies the whole screen. This would have two benefits:
1. It would proved larger images, since the lower border of the application would cover the dock.
2. It would enable a more efficient conversion between Aperture and related non full-screen programs such as finder, scanner software, etc. In the modern OSX fashion, one would simply swipe from one to the other.
Yes, I do know how to run in Aperture's full-screen mode, and I use it a lot, but the work I'm doing right now demands frequent trips back to the browser interface, and I want it bigger, better.
Please tell me I'm missing something fundamental.
Of course, it might just be sorted in an up-coming version of Aperture.
Thanks for reading this and hopefully, for your tolerance.

Perhaps I'm missing something here - so if this answer is wrong - apologies in advance
Try clicking the 'Plus' button top left of the Aperture window. (This is the same button that would be green in a Finder window)
Press it again to revert to the previous non full window view

  • Aperture in full screen mode seems to crash MacBook Pro with Retina

    To anyone who has an idea;
I have a brand new (couple months old) 15" MacBook Pro w Retina (16GB RAM, 2.3GHz i7) and I can repeatedly crash it just by running Aperture in a full screen mode and flipping through the photos (I have 21000+ photos and I was cleaning them so it required a lot of flipping back and forth, deleting but no editing). It appears as if it was running out of RAM and not releasing it back. I have all the latest updates installed (always) and I know this is not related to my machine since within the first week of having it I noticed a dent on my screen and Apple sent me a brand new machine. I could replicate this behaviour on both machines.
To mitigate the restarts, I use FreeMemory Pro app set at "freeing" RAM once it drops to 4GB but if I push the Aperture too fast (and I do not mean major editing but just simply going through many photos in full screen mode, viewing them), I still crash it.
I was wondering if there is anyone else with something similar and if you have any tips. I have reported it to Apple.

    Hi,
I'm having exactly the same hard- and software configuration like you, Gordito73 - up to date of course as well. Aperture continues to crash after it really seams to run out of memory while editing lots of photos with many different effects. -.-

  • Why is one of my dual screen grayed out when in full screen mode on the other?

I just added a second monitor for an extended desktop. When I go into full screen mode on one the other greys out. Is there a way to fix this or am i stuck? thanks!!!

No that is just the way it is. Apple still can't figure out how to do full screen apps. When you put any app into full screen mode it make a second desktop to run that app on. When that happen the second monitor, in a dual monitor setup, has nothing to do as everything is on the main monitor in different desktops.
You'll have to just expand the app to the max window size instead of going into full screen. Then you can drag/place different apps on each monitor.

  • Aperture 3 - Full screen mode "stuck"

Apologies if this subject is being discussed elsewhere; all I've found are a few orphaned threads with no answers.
The problem: when I toggle into full-screen mode (for, say a single image) I cannot exit. The only way to get out of it is to quit Aperture.
This has persisted for a few weeks now and is making the program almost unusable. Any thoughts/advice?
    Thank you,
    David

Trashing the prefs worked like a charm. Thanks for the quick and almost painless solution.

  • Full screen mode - Issue with Aperture freezing

Hi I have an issue with Aperture 3 freezing if I send an image to a plug-in or external editor while in full screen dual display mode. I have to exit full screen mode first and then send to photoshop/external plugin.
It is not a huge deal and a simple workaround but if I forget to do it Aperture will freeze and I will have to force quit the application.
    Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.
    Thanks!

Just send a comment to Apple via "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".
IME, both full-screen mode and dual-display mode have some rough edges. (I don't expect any improvements until OS 10.7, which is widely reported to include a full re-design of full-screen mode.)

  • My safari window is disappearing in non full screen mode OSX Lion

    Hi Guys,
I seem to have the following problem. not sure exactly how it started as my wife was using the mac at the time (she says she just dragged the safari to different desktop via mission control) but now the situation is as follows:
When I hit safari icon it switches on (I can see the little light dot underneath the icon and after right click I can see names of windows that are opened) however I can only see the Safari menu at the top but no window. If I scroll to the right or left to different desktops it's not there, the same goes if I double tap to see the Mission Control mode it's not there...
I so far figured out that once the Safari menu is visible on top of the screen I can go to View>Enter Full Screen and then Safari will come back into the full screen mode but once I unclick the full screen button in right top corner the whole window just swoops into the right top corner and it's nowhere to be found again.
I have rebooted and it's still the same - I can only get the full screen mode or none. it's very weird. Anyone's got any suggestions?

    Thank you,
That's not it -  Hot corners are not active, it's more like when you normally click the full screen on/off button (the two arrows facing each other) the transition happens with gray apple background and it moves either to or from full screen but here the background comes on and the window just goes into the corner and it's gone. Then when in Safari menu I go View>Enter Full Screen the window comes back exactly the same way: from top right corner into the whole screen.
Like I can only use Safai in Full Screen mode..

  • Dialog hidden automatically when browser is in full screen mode

    Hello all,
I have an applet which shows a modal dialog automatically. It works fine when the applet is shown in the IE browser in normal mode. The window disappears automatically within few seconds when the browser is in Full Screen Mode.
Does any one has faced this peculiar problem ?
I am using Internet Explorer version 6.0
    Java plugin 1.4.2_05
    Thanks,
    Surya.

maybe cuz only one window can be on top in full screen mode?

  • Quick Look full screen mode won't move to next image?

When I highlight the first image in a folder full of multiple images and then press "Space" quick look opens and shows me that first image. I can then move on to the next image by simply pressing the down arrow.
But if I enter quick look's full screen mode it won't move to the next image unless I first select all the images in the folder before entering full screen mode?
Why? Why would functionality SO simple (move to the next image) not be included in the full screen mode of quick look? It renders the full screen mode essentially pointless, who wants to look at ONE image in full screen? Of course everyone wants to browse the images, but why should I have to select all of them, why not just let me move from one to the next... exactly as I can when NOT in full screen mode?
    C'mon apple...

I remembered that there had been a slight bug in the Leopard Quicklook, so that if you went to full-screen QL, then used Command-Tab to switch to another program, then Command-Tab back to Finder, you would be back in QL Full Screen, but you could now navigate with the arrow keys. At first I thought this had been fixed, and started mucking about with other key combos and accidently got it going again. Took awhile to figure out exactly what I had done, but it works like this:
    1. Select your file, hit spacebar and click the full screen arrows
    2. Command-tab to some other program
    3. Mouse click the toolbar or sidebar of the open folder with your file in it
    4. You can now navigate with the arrow keys
Although I don't really see how this is better or easier than opening the folder, hitting Command-A, then bringing up QL....

  • Safari 6.0.1 Truncates URLs in Non Full Screen Mode

I just applied the Java removal patch that Apple released and I noticed that all URLs now get truncated to subdomain.domain.extension. For example, if I go to store.apple.com/us my URL bar only shows store.apple.com. If I go to full screen mode it shows store.apple.com/us. The trailing "/us" is gray, not black, but it shows. This is occurring with all of the sites I visit.
I created a new user and logged on with the newly created user's profile and attempted the same test. The results were exactly the same.
What can I do to see the entire URL in window mode?
    Windowed mode:
    Full screen mode:

I have had the new Safari for less than 1/2 hour and I'm already switching to Google Chrome. The new Safari not only grays out URLs inexplicably, but also, and this is SUPER annoying, when I click on a link on Facebook, it takes me out of FB to the link, but grays out the "back" arrow so I can't even return to where I was on FB. ***?

  • Full screen mode: How to switch between open windows?

    Hi There,
Is there way to get CMD + ` working in full screen mode?
Other shortcuts like CMD + OPT [ ] to switch between open tabs and CMD + TAB to switch apps seem to work - but without the ability to switch between open windows within the same app, full screen mode is kind of useless.
Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
BTW I'm using Yosemite but the forums won't find a Yosemite community (not sure the community search is working properly)
    Cheers

  • CS6 Full Screen Mode Feature Needed.

    Hello Community,
I bought the CS6 Master Collection about a year ago and was surprised that I was unable to put Photoshop, FlashBuilder or any other CS6 application in full screen mode like my other Mac applications do.  The only thing I can do is resize the application window and hide the dock.
Is there going to be an update to show support for CS6 users and allow us to use these programs in full screen mode?  I think it would be fantastic if that happened.  Then I could use hand gestures on my track pad or mouse to switch between applications that I have currently running all while staying in full screen mode within each one.
I'm thankful for Retina screen support but a larger canvas is ideal for creative development in my opinion.  I work on the 15" Retina MacBookPro primarily because I'm so dang mobile in my work/lifestyle and I value every square inch of the screen.
Adobe Please Give Us (CS6 users) Full Screen Mode.
BTW: I still consider my self a new user as I'm still learning how to use these applications.  If by some small chance there is already a way to do this please respond and tell me how.  Thanks.
    ~ Troy.

CS6 is feature complete and will not see any new features.

  • Why does Safari not automatically open in full screen mode?

In Yosemite, if I'm in full screen mode, then I close my browser (completely quitting, not just closing the window), then re-open Safari, I am not in full screen mode. The browser corners are pulled to the maximum screen size but I am not in full screen mode.
Does anyone know a solution to this? Is this a bug or a "feature?"
    Thanks,
    Mason

I have never used Span before, but inspired by your post, I tried it.
My results are the same as yours in non-fullscreen mode, but different in full screen mode.
When I press "F", image 2 appears on monitor A (as you said), but briefly I see image 1 on monitor C, then it blacks out.  Pressing "F" again reveals the two images in their original positions.
If I select a block of images, but not all the columns of images on monitor B, the images are somewhat randomly assigned to A and C.  When I press F, the images on C move to A, and C blanks out to black.
Now I know why I have never used Span I think!
What is the purpose of this thing?!

  • Aperture 3.1 - Love Full Screen Mode, Hate The System Lock-Ups

    Hi Guys,
I don't know if I'm the only person encountering this issue but Aperture 3 is driving me nuts. While I absolutely love the program and the full-screen mode, what I hate is the frequent lock-ups that force me to completely restart my iMac. Having the application lock-up is highly annoying but at least in "normal" mode I could kill the application from the Dock or Activity Monitor. However, when I'm operating in full-screen mode then I can't switch out of the application and seem to have no option but to completely restart my computer. This problem, which I first started experiencing with version 3.0 but which does seem to have been addressed in version 3.1, is happening so often that I'm afraid now to even use full-screen mode.
This problem only, to my memory, seems to happen when making adjustments but it does not seem to matter which adjustment. In the most recent occurrence the lock-up happened when I cancelled the application of a Crop by clicking the X icon on the Crop HUD.
Does anyone know either a) what might be causing the lock-ups, or b) how I can kill Aperture without having to completely restart my computer?

You could also set up SPACES to see if that works when lock up occurs in full screen
Apple Icon > System Preference > Desktop & Screen Saver > Hot corners
I have bottom left set to spaces
Then drop the mouse to bottom left, 4 windows appear, drag aperture to a seperate window and run there, you desktop is in a different space and can be accessed by bottom left of screen mouse movement (if the mouse works when A3 locks up)

  • Why can I no longer watch music videos in full screen mode via a playlist in the music app since upgrading to ios7?

Since upgrading to ios7 my iPhone 4S no longer allows me to watch music videos in full screen mode when I select the clips via a playlist from the music app.
It's now more necessary than before to use the music app rather than the video app to select music videos to play.  That's because the video app doesn't list music videos by artist any more. And also because the fast forward and rewind buttons on headphones remote no longer work on videos.
How do I watch full screen videos when rotating my iphone now shows my music library rather than showing the video itself?

I do not think it is a problem to play videos in the full screen mode using the video app.  It should work just fine, it does work ok for me  on iphone 5.  The original question was to play music videos in the music app.  Music videos and videos are two different things - I am not sure why but they are.
The problem here is that the music app supports lists and the video app does not.  I just looked at the ios7 video app and while my few test videos are shown in it, the lists they were in (in iTunes) are nowhere to be found.  There is no lists in the video app - period - which is as it was before.
The video app plays videos and music videos in the full screen mode no problem but if you have a few hundreds or more of such videos you will have hard time finding the one you want to play.  There is simply no way to categorize or group videos.  The old good folders/directories are, I guess, too simple for Apple.  It is just too bad that for years on end the world's leader in S/W development did not offer anything to categorize videos.
You have lists, albums, etc., for music, you have albums for pictures but you have absolutely nothing for videos.  And this is and has been the Apple's state-of-the art solution for this problem - simply insist that the problem does not exist.  Actually it is getting worse.  Not only there is nothing to categorize or group videos but now the only way it could be done (by marking videos as music videos and using the music app) results in a mini playback area.
Soon this OS will be able to cook dinner for your but grouping videos... no way.
    What is happening here???
