Why does Aperture not support all DNG files?

I have a Leica D-LUX 2 and an Epson RD-1. Both of these cameras create RAW files which are not supported by Apple. Why should the files, when converted to DNG, still require RAW support to be utilized. I understand the wrapper concept, but is this not the idea of DNG. What about cameras that create a DNG file, rather than RAW (i.e. the new Leica M8).
Thanks,
Ken

Hi Kenneth,
You're missing the point Karl is making. RAW data is (in essence) proprietary to the camera. All DNG does is essentially encapsulate that proprietary data in a standard format. The data is still proprietary whether DNG or RAW.
By proprietary I mean that the sensor array and sensitivity to light, tonal correction across the gamut all are understood by the camera manufacturer and held as parameters (data) in the RAW or DNG file. It requires specific knowledge to interpret this data into a renderable image. Until such time as camera manufacturers agree that 1 = 1 and 2 = 2, we are stuck with this issue (and ALL our concern of x years from now when nobody supports what is our latest and greatest camera). An API included in Aperture (actually OS X) would at least allow camera manufacturers to write their RAW conversion algorithms and take Apple out of the loop.... as well as take dependence on OS X releases out of the loop too!
Hope this clarifies.

  • Why does iphoto not copy all photos when transfering

    Hi peeps.
    why does iPhoto not copy all photos from an event when im copy/pasting to an external folder on my mac(for later transfer). All softwares are up to date and ive only just realised it happens, but when i copy all pics in an event then paste in a folder, the pic count is substantially different. for example i select all pictures in an event called 'new1', the count of files is 188. i then copy/ paste to a folder,  select all files and check 'info' and it says 141 files???
    all i can see painstakingly going through to compare which images are in each place is that the ones that arent in my new folder , seem to be the ones ive edited in iPhoto??  conincidence? or am I missing something fundamental here?  Ive only just realised this is occuring. The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.  So basically all of the versions of pictures I want, i.e, the new edited and adjusted versions are no longer! NOT HANDY!
      help please.

    We've seen a few reports of this in the past while and no one is sure of the cause.
    Use the File -> Export command. See this User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
    for details of the options the Export Dialogue offers.

    The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.
    means you are losing quality, metadata and the version of control. If you don't want these why use iPhoto at all?
    You could just move the whole Library to an external:
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Why does Canon NOT support the Canon Utilities software?

    The Canon Map Utility software can not detect my Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2.  Over the phone, Canon "Customer Support" had me uninstall all 10 Canon Utilities that I had previously installed, and then let me install only 8 older versions of Canon Utilities.  And, the Canon Map Utility software STILL could not detect my Canon GP-E2.
    Why doesn't Canon have ANYONE who knows the Canon Utility software?  The first support rep had NEVER used any of the software!  And the second support rep, whom I was transfered to by a Supervisor who told me that this was the most experienced support person for the software, has only used the software ONCE!
    Why does Canon NOT SUPPORT Canon software?????

    When I use the GPS-E2 on my camera, the pictures have are geotagged.  It's when I try to use the GPS log that Map Utility has a problem.  I like the idea of recording where I went, not just where each picture was taken.  That way, I can see where I found nothing to take pictures of.

  • Why does Mail not support read receipts?

    I find it hard to believe that there is a single email application that doesn't support read receipts. For me it is a fairly basic feature I would expect any decent Mail application to have.
    I am currently in the process of writing an email to a company and I want to make sure they get it - a read receipt is how I want to verify that they've had it. Why does Mail not support this?
    If I am going to have to accept that Mail is not the first class application Apple keeps parading around - is there an alternative that offers this and other features I would expect to find in Microsoft Outlook (minus the calendar etc...)?

    Outlook uses a Microsoft-proprietary system for "read receipts", so there may be no way Apple could implement it, or there may be licensing fees involved, or Apple may just not feel that it's worth spending the money to implement. Outlook which is designed to work primarily with an Exchange server, so it's in Microsoft's interest to support Exchange features (note that even Microsoft in their own Mac app do not support all the features theydo on Windows).
    You can express your interest in this feature to Apple via their feedback pages, if you wish:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    but support for return receipts in any system other than Exchange is very unlikely, since as Matt said it is not part of the Internet email specification and hence not widely supported at all.

  • Why does cellular not support phone features?

    iPad Mini with Retina display has a celluar capability. Why does it not support full phones features, doubling as an iPad and phone like the iPhone 5S does?

    And I don't mean to seem rude. I have worked in product development many years with a very large company. I have also challenged engineers and developers to look beyond the basics to deliver something that sets the trend adn differentiates itself from the pack.
    Apple as that trend-setter created awesome products in the form of the iPad Air and the iPad Mini w/ RD. It is extraordinary in the leading technologies they incuded in the  package. It would have been BRILLIANT though, to have converged both as an IPad and a phone. It would have propelled the iPad light years ahead of the competition.

  • Why does Verizon not support Windows 8 for wi fi?

    Why does Verizon not support Windows 8 for wi fi?  Are they planning on supporting Windows 8?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Verizon wi fi for hot spots does not work with Windows 8.  For verification go to FAQs about Verizon Wi-Fi for FiOS Internet,
    http://www.verizon.com/Support/Residential/Internet/fiosinternet/networking/setup/wi-fi/124650.htm , and click on How do I know if my laptop or netbook is compatible with Verizon Wi-Fi? .  Verizon wireless home network does work well with Windows 8.
    Since you can't even download the wi fi for hot spots software if you have Windows 8, I don't know how to use compatability mode to get around the problem,

  • Why does Adobe not support tablets or Kindle Fire

    Why does Adobe not support tablets or Kindle fire?

    You have it backwards.
    Tablets (Kindle, Galaxy, iPad) don't support Flash.
    Chronologically:
    2008 (March) - Apple® releases the first iPhone, using iOS®. Steve Jobs is insistent and adamant that iOS® is NOT compatible with Flash® and NEVER WILL BE. Jobs' reasoning is that playing Flash® content is processor consumptive and it drains batteries, thus shortening the life of them in mobile devices. In six years, that hasn't changed. Not for the iPhone®, iPad® or iPod® Touch™. It never will change and there never will be a Flash Player® for iOS®.
    2008 (September) - Google® introduces Android™ to compete with iOS®, for people who don't want to pay what Apple® is asking for an iPhone®. Android®, unlike its Apple® counterpart IS compatible with Flash®.
    2012 (June) - Android™ (Google®) announces the end of support for Flash® with Android™ 4.3. Going forward NO Android™ devices will be compatible with Flash®, but older versions on older devices can still be loaded with "legacy" builds still available from Adobe®. Android™ (Google®) cites the same reason Apple® did for the decision to end support of Flash®. Adobe® continues to release security patches to Flash Player® for Android™ until September 2013, announcing the "end of life" for Android™ Flash® September 10.

  • Why does Apple not support GiffGaff?

    GiffGaff allow you to tether and use your standard data allowance, but Apple don't even recognize GiffGaff as a network - so you can't enable any kind of tethering. The only workaround appears to be to jailbreak your phone. Why does Apple not support this network?

    The "text-overflow: ellipsis;" style is supported by all major browsers EXCEPT Firefox. I had thought that this would have been fixed with Version 4. But it was not. Then I had hoped that it would be fixed in version 5. Yet it still is not supported.
    PLEASE, PLEASE add this support.

    MDN docs say it will be in firefox 7. See

  • Why does Apple not support the rSAP - Remote SIM Access Profile - for connection to car handsfree via Bluetooth

    Hello community,
    I just ordered a new car and it comes with a bluetooth based handsfree installation based on rSAP (remote SIM access profile). I learned that rSAP is the ideal thing to eliminate the unwanted radiofrequency radiation (RFR) inside the car. Now while googleing I also learned that iPhone on iOS does not support rSAP.
    I would like to point to the following page which shows some more detailed information on the rSAP topic:
    http://paulroberts69.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/android-2-2-and-rsap-compatibility /
    I find rSAP a very usefuly thing, if it really brings the GSM radiation level down inside the car and allows the full use of all GSM functions by the rSAP premium handsfree kit built into the car. I absolutely do not understand why it is not already available with iOS.
    From several web sources I understand that rSAP is available for jailbroken iPhones. That means, the chips inside the iPhone would support a rSAP service. Therefore my question: will it become available with iOS 6?
    Or do all the folks at Apple drive old cars/brands and don't even think of the rSAP feature? Can we somehow start to get a hearing by the Apple developers? According to my knowledge, rSAP is implemented with all premium handsfree factory units of the VW brands - Audi, VW, Skoda ... This should make a relevant user base!
    Any others with same wish and/or experiences? Comment here please!
    Regards,
    Olaf

    Hi Meg,
    could be several things:
    1. they forgot?
    2. none of their team members drives any VW branded car?
    3. nobody cares about the radiation inside the car?
    4. all have plugin holders for the iPhone?
    I am just surprised that rSAP is offered by a premium car maker, but Apple seems ignorant about its support.
    I am mostly concerned about the radiation when I use regular hands free. But I do understand that rSAP also has some limitations (only access to SIM contacts and other things, Wikipedia DE has a good full report, Wikipedia EN is much shorter).

    Olaf

  • Why does appple not support Firewire to the 5th Gen ipods?

    I just picked up a new 5th gen iPod and am upset that it does not allow for connection to my older G3 iMac via Firewire (as did my older iPod Photo 40).
    I can connect it using usb 1.0 but that connection is painfully slow. Why not support Firewire conectivity? Perhaps Apple wants to force me to buy a new computer?
    G3 imac (CRT)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    G3 imac (CRT)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    "Apple is aware that iMac users could use Firewire with older iPods, but not my new one. It has nothing to do with updating computer hardware."
    While it is true there is nothing you can update on your computer to make the iPod work on a Firewire port, it has everything to do with the fact that the iPod no longer supports the HARDWARE (i.e. chipset) for Firewire transfer in the iPod itself. It has been this way for well over a year now.
    "IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME THAT I NOW HAVE TO USE USB WHERE I USED FIREWIRE TO SYNC IN THE PAST."
    Extending your flawed logic further, I used to be able to use SCSI drives, ADP keyboards and Mice, AUII network ports, RS-422 serial ports, etc. so should I still be able to use those now? How's that floppy drive working out on your Mac? Used to be those as well, so I guess your Mac has one now?
    "This feature is dreadfully slow,"
    Yes, USB1.1 ports are very slow which is why all Mac computers for MANY years now, have all come with USB2 ports for high speed transfer. While I know it ***** when you have an older computer that doesn't support the latest in higher speed ports, but you can not expect Apple to support all port types forever on every device and machine.
    When the original iMacs came out, everyone moaned and complained about the loss of a floppy drive and all the devices that no longer would work, like tablets, because there were no ADB ports and all the external SCSI drives that couldn't be used. Guess what, everyone got over it and moved on. Now you would laugh it Apple put a floppy drive into a new machine.

  • E-M5 Mark II: Why does LR6 not support working with the full 4:3 raw image for pictures taken using a different aspect ratio?

    When importing Olympus E-M1 or E-M10 raw images which are taken in aspect ratio different to native the 4:3 MFT sensor format, LR will display the frame as crop overlay to the full image as captured by the sensor. This is very useful because at time of postprocessing one can still control the position of the frame, and modify if required.
    I was very suprised to see that for E-M5 Mark 2 this is not supported in LR6. The raw file in LR6 corresponds exactly to the frame which was chosen while shooting. Full 4:3 image information is present in the ORF raw file though, which can be easily seen eg using Olympus Viewer.
    Is there any specific reason why this useful feature has been neglected for E-M5 Mark II?
    Thanks
    Karsten

  • Why does Find not see a visible file at Volume level?

    I recently searched (Find) my iMac's internal hard drive for a file that I knew I had created ("MAC addresses.doc"), but it found no such file, either by File Name or Contents. I had to try to remember where I filed it, and then I found it in [Macintosh HD] > Library > Documentation > User Guides and Information. Searching (Find) again at the level of any folder within the volume, even Library, finds the file immediately, both by File Name and Content. The file has no unusual properties, and its Permissions allow everyone to at least Read it. This occurs even after repairing permissions of the volume. Why should the OS be unable to Find this file for me when searched on the volume name? Should I change some setting/preference in order to allow that (all files to be found at Volume level)?

    Thanks Frank,
    SYSTEM_PARAMETER is a table owned by X.  If I qualify the select statement by adding the owner it works, but of course I do not want to do that.  Here is the DDL for creating SYSTEM_PARAMETER:
    create table SYSTEM_PARAMETER
      name         VARCHAR2(256) not null,
      date_value   DATE,
      number_value NUMBER,
      string_value VARCHAR2(512),
      comments     VARCHAR2(512)
    alter table SYSTEM_PARAMETER add constraint PK_SYSTEM_PARAMETER primary key (NAME);
    Again, if I rewrite the procedure to the following (only difference is the red X.), it works:
    create or replace  procedure ztm_get_debug_level is
      vc_pkg_name  system_parameter.name%TYPE := 'DEBUG_LEVEL_PKG_BASE_KEYS';
      vn_error     services.debug_log_level.debug_level_id%TYPE := 30;
      v_debugLevel   system_parameter.number_value%TYPE;
      function get_owner return varchar2 is
        cursor c1 is
        select owner from all_tables where table_name = 'SYSTEM_PARAMETER';
        v_Ret_Val VARCHAR2(30);
      BEGIN
        OPEN C1;
        FETCH C1 INTO v_Ret_Val;
        CLOSE C1;
        RETURN v_Ret_Val;
      END;
    begin
      DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('AAAA - ' || get_owner);
      select s.number_value
      into   v_debugLevel
      from   X.system_parameter  s
      where  s.name = vc_pkg_name;
      DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('BBBB');
    exception
      when no_data_found then
        NULL;
      when others then
       DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('p_get_debug_level.WHEN OTHERS');
       raise;
    end;
    This procedure exists in 4 other environments where there are no issues.  It can't be a privileges issue as the table is owned by user X and as you can see by the lookup (which was added for debug) against ALL_TABLES the owner is clearly X.  So, why can X not select from it's own table unless we include the owner?
    Thanks,
    Thomas
