Why does DNG Converter insist on lossy conversion?

I use DNG Converter to convert RW2 files to DNG so I can work on them in various PP programs.
No matter whether or not I have the "lossy" box checked, DNG Converter insists on doing a lossy conversion.
How can I stop this?
Sample images:
Original RW2 image, with histogram:
DNG image - note loss shown on histogram.  There is also posterized banding, although in the small image allowed on this site it is very hard to see.

Thank you for pointing out the problem.  Preview from DNG Converter is JPEG.
==================================
UPDATE:
My previous comment, above, is irrelevant.
The preview is JPEG, but I am working with the DNG file.  So my original question remains unanswered.
I have found the same issue with RW2 files.  I will investigate settings for FastStone Image Viewer (the program I am using for editing).  So far I find no options to change treatment of DNG or RW2.

  • Why does DNG converter turn 11 MB files to 40 MB files?

    My DNG converter 6.3 makes DNG files of about 40-41 MB out of the 11-12 MB RW2 raw files from my Panasonic Lumix GF1. Why? It does not increase the size of the raw files from my Canon G11, rather the opposite. How can I cure this problem? Please help!

    I am having the identical problem while setting my DNG converter to "4.1 or Later."
    Basically, can someone describe in lay terms what the "lens correction" and "op codes" issues mean. Also, I assume I cannot choose "5.4 or later" in the DNG Converter when using version CS3 of Photoshop because that is where the compatibility becomes a problem. Is that correct?
    Can one simply upgrade the version of Camera Raw without upgrading Photoshop? Also, if I did upgrade Photoshop, would I be able to go back to those DNGs that are in the 40mb range, convert them to DNG again, and get a new DNG file that is more in the range of 10-12mb? Or am I now stuck with those 40mb DNGs? (I did not choose the "embed original RAW file" option.)
    Thanks

  • WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization?

    WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files and/or documents in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization? Even after I numbered the documents/folders to keep them in my preferred order, it will still displace them occasionally. This is becoming increasingly frustrating!
    Is this a "Pages" issue or "FInder"? The vast majority of documents I use are in Pages, but there are also Numbers, PDFs, jpegs and a few other applications involved. This never happened before I upgraded to Mountain Lion; in Tiger, the documents (mostly Appleworks) and files stayed where I wanted them to be.
    I am visually oriented, and prefer to arrange items in a folder in an order that makes them easier for me to access, which is often NOT alphabetical.
    Can anyone suggest a solution? Please??
    Thank you.
    Sara

    nbar,
    Thank you for your reply.
    However, I do not understand what you mean by "user account." I am the only user, and can find no options for "user" or "guest." The parental controls have always been off, as there are no other people who have access to my computer.
    Frank,
    Thank you for your reply.
    All my documents, files and folders are in icon view, Arranged By: none in both view and view options. This arbitrary rearranging does not happen all the time, only when I make a substantial change to one of the documents in the file or folder. I'm not sure what you mean by "column heading."
    MichaelLAX,
    Thank you for your reply.
    I know, to my sorrow, that Appleworks does not work with Mountain Lion. I spent at least three months converting approximately 2,000 Appleworks documents to Pages, Numbers, Bento (for databases) and Touchdraw (for drawings). So this is not the problem; but as I said, I did not have this rearranging problem with Appleworks - the icons stayed where I wanted them to be. I still miss the ease and reliability of Appleworks, darn it!
    Frank,
    Thank you for your second reply.
    I do have the Sort By: in view options as well as in view set to "none."   The finder still insists on rearranging, but only when I have made a substantial change to a document in that file or folder.
    Any futher thoughts?
    xdab,
    Thank you for your reply.
    "Are you are using icon view, but for some reason the finder moves files around? is that the problem?"
    YES!! This is exactly the problem.
    "If this operation is successful then erase the original and rename the new one to the name originally chosen by the user."
    This seems like a lot of trouble, especially as I often work on several documents at the same time.
    "By the way, the finder has a "clean up by" menu that rearranges icons in one of the standard orders, there are shortcuts that produce the same effect, for example <option><cmd>1 sorts them by name. Is it possible that this shortcut was typed by mistake without you noticing?"
    I do know about this "clean up by" option, and avoid it like the plague! So I doubt this is the issue, and I infrequently use keyboard shortcuts like this anyway.
    Thanks all who replied. None of the suggestions seem to work, however. Any others out there?

    Sara

  • Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

    Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

    It doesn't.
    When you import  Raw to iPhoto the app makes a jpeg preview of the Raw automatically. When you import from iPhoto then Aperture brings over both versions.

  • Does DNG Converter support CFA DNG for X-Trans files?

    Does Adobe DNG Converter support the X-Trans sensor layout from ie. the X100S? Can converting an X-Trans sensor RAF file to to DNG result in a file that is _not_ in any way demosaiced and/or linearized?
    If DNG Converter truly does support conversion of X-Trans to CFA DNG files, how can the resulting files be so much smaller (when not linearizing or ticking lossy compression of the DNGs)? The RAF files are all around 32 MB, while the DNGs are around ~23 MB. Is it only a matter lossless compression, or is the mosaiced data in some way altered?
    If DNG Converter does support CFA DNG for X-Trans, at what DNG Converter version did you first implement support for the X-Trans sensor layout and conversion of X-Trans data to CFA DNG files?
    These are important questions that I'm having a hard time finding answers for. I'd appreciate answer to any (but preferably all) of the questions.

  • Why does itunes convert my files.....again?

    When iTunes scans my music folder (which is not the iTunes folder) it will convert some files and place them in the iTunes music folder. Because I don't want duplicates I took the converted files and moved them to my music folder, replacing the originals with the converted files.
    When iTunes rescans my music folder it converts these same files.......again! and puts the converted files into the iTunes folder again making duplicates.
    Why does it do that, how can I stop it, and why would it think it needs to convert a file that IS the conversion in made in the first place?

    It's not automated. Because I add my music in bulk I initiate the scan by click on File > Add Folder to Library, and then just repoint to my music folder so it will add all of the new files at once.
    Thanks.

  • Does DNG Converter 5.6 Alter WB Info of DMC-LX3 RW2s?

    I have converted a Panasonic DMC-LX3 generated ".RW2" to DNG using DNG Converter 5.6 for the exclusive purpose of being able to open it in the current version (2.1040) of Rawnalyze. The conversion prodeeds OK, and I am able to view the resulting DNG in Rawnalyze. It is my (humble, and barely-informed) understanding that the DNG Converter 5.6 performs de-mosaicing upon the RW2. However, I am uncertain as to:
    (1) Whether or not the DNG Converter 5.6 has altered any White Balance information contained in the original DMC-LX3 RW2 image-file; and
    (2) Whether any such alterations as described above in (1) result in an alteration of the "Shot WB Coefficients" (that I am assuming represent the DMC-LXW "raw" mode White Balance Scales) displayed when Rawnalyze is in Histogram display mode.
    My goal is to accomplish a "UniWB" scheme using the DMC-LX3 - by setting the "Custom White Balance" in the DMC-LX3 to a self-created color-target image displayed on my computer's LCD/TFT flat-screen display. See:
    http://ricohforum.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1556&start=50#p17852
    My original self-created color-target image was derived from the DxO Mark database for the DMC-LX3 Firmware Level 1.0 first published on or around November 17, 2008. See:
    http://ricohforum.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1556&start=40#p17389
    for my initial details (including a link to the DxO Mark database entry for the DMC-LX3).
    The DxO Mark White Balance Coefficients are: Red = 2.55; Green = 1.00; and Blue = 1.52.
    When I used the relative weightings listed directly above to create a color-target (using the DMC-LX3 at the latest Firmware Level 2.1, and using the "Standard Color" selection within the "Film Mode" settings: Contrast = 0; Saturation = 0; Sharpness = -2; and Noise Reduction = -2) ...
    the resulting DNG (converted from a DMC-LX3 RW2) shows "Shot WB Coefficients" as: Red = 1.0760; Green = 1.0000, Green = 1.0000; and Blue =1.1597 when viewed in Rawnalyze Histogram display mode.
    My first (humble, and barely-informed) assumption from the above result is that (perhaps) I need to re-scale the DxO Mark White Balance Coefficients used in my initial experiment by a factor equal to what Rawnalyze reports as the "Shot WB Coefficients". When I do such a re-scaling (shown here rounded to four digits following the decimal point - despite the fact that the original DxO Mark data is only precise to two digits following the decimal point), I get:
    Red = 2.370
    Green = 1.0000
    Blue = 1.3107
    I am thinking that I should make a new color-target for setting the DMC-LX3 Custom White Balance where the relative weighting of Red, Green, and Blue in the color-target reflects the above-listed modified RGB Coefficients. In fact, I did just that (as you will find if you read the first Ricoh Forum post that I cite above) ...
    However, I am (just barely) wise enough to recognize how little I know about these things (details surrounding "raw" image-files in general, the Adobe DNG Converter 5.6, and the very interesting Rawnalyze 2.1040. I want my action sand information disseminated to be accurate (for the benefit of my own DMC-LX3 "UniWB" implementation scheme, as well for the benefit of any readers who might assume that I actually may know something about what I am posting!).
    Gabor, I know that you are out there somewhere (it appears only a few hundred miles to the north of me in Seattle). I have been doing all the "Googling" and forum-reading that I can to try to understand the details of these matters (including reading your Rawnalyze on-line help information). If you have the time - would you be so kind to enlighten me as to what your understanding of these matters is (or, if possible, refer me to information sources where I might be able to be able to figure these specific questions out on my own). Many thanks!

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    It is my (humble, and barely-informed) understanding that the DNG Converter 5.6 performs de-mosaicing upon the RW2
    You could convert it in demosaiced format (it is an option under Preferences, if you select the compatibility as "Custom"); however, if Rawnalyze can display the DNG, then it is certainly not demosaiced.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    Whether or not the DNG Converter 5.6 has altered any White Balance information contained in the original DMC-LX3 RW2 image-file
    The converter usually changes the temperature and tint; however, Rawnalyze displays the coefficients of the raw channels, which are stored in the raw file either by the camera or by the raw/DNG converter.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    the resulting DNG (converted from a DMC-LX3 RW2) shows "Shot WB Coefficients" as: Red = 1.0760; Green = 1.0000, Green = 1.0000; and Blue =1.1597 when viewed in Rawnalyze Histogram display mode
    This is not excellent, but not horrendeous either. Have you tried using a totally clipped raw image as white balance template? It works with some cameras, but not with all. Give it a try and post the results pls:
    a. shoot a white sheet with +4 EV bias,
    b. verify in Rawnalyze if everything was clipped,
    c. load that raw image in the camera as WB template,
    d. make a shot with "custom WB" or whatever the name of that option is with your camera, i.e. using the previous shot as WB template,
    e. verify the WB coefficients; they should be very close to 1.

  • Why does my converted raw to jpeg image have an arrow pointing to it?

    When I have taken a raw image through the camera raw edit and then to full edit in elements 10 and then post the converted image onto my desk top to then move elsewhere why does it show up with an arrow pointing to the image and why am I unable to use it unless I send it to iphoto first? See screen shot of photo of woman with arrow pointing to it.  What does this mean?

    Presumably you have a desktop folder or desktop pictures folder. Go directly to the folder containing the jpeg.

  • Why does DNG 8.5 update have to be opened separately to convert my DMC GH4 files to camera raw?

    I just recently purchased a new iMac and installed CS6 again. When I went to the update page to reload DNG 8.5 it went into Applications when downloaded and it appear I have to open it and select the files, etc. On my old iMac with the same CS6 after I downloaded the DNG update, when I opened Bridge and photo uploader opened it did the conversion immediately. Why has this changed or have I done something wrong with the new download?

    Are you wanting to convert to dng because the Panasonic GH4 files won't open in photoshop cs6 without converting them to dng first?
    Photoshop cs6/Bridge cs6 should be able to be updated to camera raw 8.6, provided your mac os x is newer than snow leopard 10.6.8
    (Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6)
    Not having a updated camera raw plugin could be the cause of why the photo downloader doesn't work as on your older mac.

  • Why does choosing "convert to PDF" from a Word Doc's context menu bring up two Save As dialog boxes?

    I have a user that every time she chooses "Convert to PDF" from the context menu on a MS Word document she gets a Save As box, enters the name and location, clicks Save. Then Word starts and it brings up another Save As box and makes her enter the name and save location AGAIN. It does then create the PDF, but it is very annoying to her as she makes lots of PDFs for our board of directors (she is our CEO). I have tried it on other PCs that have a similar setup, but none have done this. They all just run the converter window after one dialog box. Please HELP

    Does your user have custom add-ons besides the Acrobat PDFMaker add-on?  If so, try disabling the other add-ons as a test to see if you get the same results.
    Does your user have a custom template?  Try moving it out and using the standard MS Word template as test?
    Did your user have a previous installation of Adobe Acrobat??  If so, check the Add-ons to see if an older version is still registered with MS Word.

  • Why does Logic Convert MP3 to Aif and store them on Desktop?

    Gentlemen please bear with me on this probably elementary question here - (you are dealing with someone who until recently refused to stop using Logic 6 on an old but very stable G4 tower OS 9 because it worked so perfectly and still does)...
    I have found that when importing audio files( ie CD tracks or MP3s) from an external hard drive into the audio window (via Control F) , there is some sort of preference which does not simple use the original file but copies it to my desktop into a new fold called "Audio".
    In the actual song document, looking at the song path and recording path etc, everything points to my faithful La Cie external hard drive. There is obviously some extra step or song managing process included in Logic 7 which does this and which I have yet to figure out...
    Could this be something to do with the Project Manager preferences ( I never use this feature except for Save as Project when backing up a song at the end of the process when it is done and dusted)
    Any explanations gratefullly accepted
    Powerbook 5,8   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   G4 Powerbook

    I'm not sure I can help. Compressed audio files must be converted to work in Logic version prior to 7.2. Otherwise, audio files should remain in their original locations unless you've specified in you project settings to copy external files into your project folder. It gets messy working on a seesion for which there is no project folder created, in my opinion. You might just want to save your new sessions as projects, but don't check the "copy external audio..." box until you're ready to archive. That way, at least your converted mp3s will land in a tidy location.
    I partly responded to give this post a bump, becuse I'm not sure I have the answer.

  • Why does Mail convert PDF attachments to JPEGs?

    When I attach a PDF to a message in Mac Mail it automatically converts to a JPEG. I can't find any reason for this in preferences and the Help Menu is no help. This didn't happen previously. I'm not doing anything different when I create PDFs (usually through Quark Xpress or InDesign). Is anyone else having this problem?
    Quicksilver G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Are you using the Image Size adjustment available at the bottom right of the message window with attaching a single page PDF file which displays inline or viewed in place?
    If so, this will convert a PDF file to a JPEG since the Image Size adjustment was designed for image/photo type attachments only.

  • If I want to open the same website in a second tab and press Ctrl+T and start typing the website title or URL, why does Firefox 4 insist on switching to the first tab? Is it possible to turn this off?

    I regularly need to open the same website in two tabs, to be able to view changes made between opening the first and second tabs. In Firefox 3.x I could press Ctrl+T and start typing the website title or URL, which would be auto-completed by Firefox. This enabled me to quickly open the same website in a second tab. Firefox 4 does not do this, instead it wants me to switch to the existing tab. This is not what I need.
    Of course it is possible to open the same website in a second tab via e.g. a bookmark, but this takes more time and effort. It would be great if I could select Firefox's behavior in this situation.

    To create a duplicate of an existing tab in Firefox 4, do one of the following:
    *middle-click the icon on the left end of the URL/Location/Address Bar
    *hold down the Ctrl key and drag the tab until a small arrow appears at the border between tabs, then release the mouse button, then release the Ctrl key.

  • Why does iPhoto convert my pics to low res?

    I use an elderly MacBook (November 2007 model) with the edition of iPhoto that came with the computer. When I take photos with my digital camera and import them into iPhoto for editing, it always lowers the resolution. My original files are 300 dpi when I view them in Preview, and when I save the changes in iPhoto and export them as JPGs, even at maximum quality, the JPG files are always at 72 dpi.
    Since my editors require hi-res, cropped photos, this is getting incredibly frustrating! Is there a way to make iPhoto stop doing this? Or do I just need a new computer

    iPhoto doesn't change the images. The dpi means nothing at all unless you're printing. Maximum quality in the export settings refer to jpeg compression and have nothing to so with dpi.
    Long Answer: Dpi means nothing in the digital world of your computer. There are no "inches" to have "dots per..." Size is measured in pixels. That's the same on your camera. It doesn't take 10 x 8 or 6 x 4 shots. It takes shots measured in megapixels. For instance 4,000 x 3,000 is a 12 megapixel camera.
    Using that example, that shot from that camera has 12 million pixels. So that's how many "Dots" there are. To decide the ratio of dots per inch, you now need to decide the "inches" part. And that's printing. Print at 10 x 8 and the dpi will be 4,000/10 or about 400 dpi. At 6 x 4 then it's 4,000/6 or 660 dpi. Work the other way: Print at 300 dpi and the resulting image will be about 13 inches on the longer side.
    So, your photo as a fixed number of pixels. Changing the dimensions of the print will vary the dpi, changing the dpi will vary the dimensions of the print.
