Why does DVD Studio Pro compress my 3GB video?

I thought since the original Quicktime movie I made with FCP was under the 4.7(?) capacity of a DVD, that Studio Pro wouldn't compress my 3GB movie. But after import to DVD Studio Pro the whole project only shows up as using 350MB of space. And when burned and played back the video looks horrible! Artifacting (?), etc.
Do I need to go into Compressor and select a setting there BEFORE bringing it into Studio Pro? What setting is recommended? (8 min, wide screen, HD).
Thanks!

>I thought since the original Quicktime movie I made with FCP was under the 4.7(?) capacity of a DVD, that Studio Pro wouldn't compress my 3GB movie.
Unfortunately, you thought wrong.  The DVD video specification requires MPEG-2 video and either AC3 or PCM audio, specially multiplexed and formatted as VOB files.  So the size of the source file doesn't really matter.
>Do I need to go into Compressor and select a setting there BEFORE bringing it into Studio Pro?
That would be preferable.
>What setting is recommended?
Duplicate one of the DVD presets and adjust the bit rate to increase the quality ... but do not exceed 8.0mbps or the disc may stutter in some players.  Encode the audio as Dolby Digital (.ac3).
>8 min, wide screen, HD
You're out of luck there ... DVD is a standard definition format only.  If you want to deliver HD content on an optical disc, it will have to be Blu-ray - not DVD.

  • Why does dvd studio Pro all of a sudden want my serial number?

Using DVDSP 4.2.1.  This has been stable on my Mac Pro for many years now.  The file importer got confused somehow and even Activity Monitor had trouble force quitting.
I repaired permissions and rebooted and all seemed fine. Now about every 3 or 4 times I start DVDSP it'a asking for me to put in my identifying info, including the SN.. I've got the SN, but I don't feel all warm and fuzzy about this.  Does anyone know what has happened and how I can be sure things are not going to lock me out when I need to keep going on a project?

I have had this problem occur rather often.  Not sure which OS you are running.  A couple of things, after entering the number, close it out and open the older version of Motion (the one from the Studio and install discs, not the new one if you purchased through app store.)
Then either launch DVD Studio Pro via going into the App Folder and open a project that way OR close out DVD SP and click a DVD SP project to open it.  Yeah, it sounds weird.  On one of my computers following one of those seems to have cut down the asking for a serial number a lot, while on another computer the second version seems to work.  I have not tracked down where the problem came from yet, but I had the same thing - stable for years.  And I do not recall even doing any updates because once I have computers working, I leave them alone unless needed.  I am guessing I probably loaded a driver or something.....

  • HELP!  DVD Studio pro shows a 3GB movie as 88GB!

I am realy in deep troubles!
Doing a (volentary) documentation about my city, the final doc movie will be shown at 7.januar 2006.
Since 1 1/2 year i am working on DVD projekt and nearly finished.Suddenly DVD Studio pro goes crazy.
I have a lot experiances with iMovie and iDVD but not with Production Suite (FCP + DVD Studio pro) .Maybe i have some misstakes done with FCP or DVD studio pro. But i can't see what and why because during this periode i have burened and check it on TV couple of times bevor.I could cry.
Just have upgraded to the newest Production Studio pro Version and same result.
Ok, one thing i have changed, and later the Problems stared!
In DVD Studio pro you can say how much motion you have.
small, meduim, often i guess (have it in german)
This setting worked and i could one time burn a DVD.
I can say the quality was better, better color and less noise or moire.
I changed it back, but no success.
I have seen in the forum discussion about audio which might
doe troubles and some advises using a.peak tool.
I have checked the aiff files and there are terrible big!
350 MB the biggest. I am totaly confiused because it worked bevor. Have checked the sequenzes from FCP which still works.
What would you suggest first befor i jump out of the window.
Many thanks for any helping hand
    Sven

Finaly i have solved my problem!
The forum and the helpers did guide me in the right direction. It was not logicaly to me why it work again.
With FCP i could view the sequenz correct.
Then i used compressor-2 with DVD Best Quality, 90min 2 Pass 90min. Best motion. GOP closed.
The output i imported into DVDStudio pro.The import was about 4 minute while bevor it was a few seconds!
I did "clean up" DVDStudio Pro removoed the dvdstudio....plist file -> same result
I did start a new FCP projekt with a new Sequenz, imported all the work i have done befor (lot of work)
    and used compressor again.
Then i imported with DVD Studio Pro the compressor files
(this time dolby ac3 audio file) and the import was done very quick.
I could burn the dvd (2.3gb instead of 88GB) and a first quick look this (very early) morning was good!
I chosed this way because i am not sure does working with multiple projekts (not sequenzes) can disturbes the other projekts if they use the same movie. So i will continue with a Projekt, finish them, and start the next from scratch. Hope have no problems like this again ...

  • Does DVD Studio Pro max out at 100 chapters?

I have been told that 100 chapters is the most you can have in a DVD Studio Pro project. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks in advance for your input and your time.

If I'm adding a slideshow to my project and have 180 photos I assume I need to create 2 slideshows? Each photo is a chapter when you convert it to a track.
I'm new to DVD Studio Pro and none of my menu photos or slideshow photos appear in the Viewer. Why can't I see the photos? They appear in the Menu, Assets and Slideshow column but don't appear in the Viewer or Simulator. I'm obviously missing s step somewhere. I only do slideshows because I'm a still photographer. I'm moving from iMovieHD and iDVD to DVD Studio Pro 3. My photos are 300dpi and 3000x2400 which is not 4:3 ratio. I need to recrop for DVD.
Any suggestions (read the manual)? I did buy DVD Studio Pro - 101: Mastering DVD Studio Pro but it doesn't help with trouble shooting or setup. I apprecaite any help. -Roger

  • Why wont dvd studio pro eject disc when done?

I have a dual 1.8  g% that won't eject DVDs after they are burned it will hang forever writing leadout on both DVD studio pro and Toast 8. Anyone know of an issue or a fix?  Hard crashing to get DVD's out is a bad idea.

What happens when you try to write the disk on a different DVD burner?
I suspect the drive is having "issues".

  • Does DVD Studio Pro 4 Work In Mountain Lion OS 10.8.3 ?

I have an older version of "DVD Studio Pro 4" which I have never installed, an would be curious to know if it will run on OSX 10.8.3 (Mountain LIon)?  I have a new 2013 iMac that I am loading up with software, and would like to consider loading the "DVD Studio Pro 4".
I'd also be interested in knowing of any DVD Studio Pro 4 updates (if any) and where to get them, including the 4.0.2 update ... as, unfortunately the Apple site has dropped update support for this program.
Anyone have any knowledge on this?

    Russ:
Well, evidently "DVD Studio Pro 4" won't install on an Intel iMac.
Attached (below) is a "screen grab" of the unexpected pop-up window I was first presented with, when I tried to use the DVD Studio Pro 4 Installer .mpkg.
    DVD Studio Pro 4
    Minimum Hardware Requirements
    • A Macintosh computer with a 733 megahertz (MHz) or faster
PowerPC G4 or G5 processor (G5 required for HD authoring
       and playback)
    • 8 megabytes (MB) of video memory (32 MB recommended)
    • 512 MB of RAM (1 GB required for HD)
    • AGP Quartz Extreme graphics card
    DVD Studio Pro 4
    Minimum Software Requirements
    • Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later
    • QuickTime 7.0 or later
Nuts!  I really wanted to install and use this application.
PS:  Just curious Russ .... how are you able to run "DVD Studio Pro 4" on your MBP with 10.7?  Is the MBP Intel?  Can you tell me the "version" of "DVD Studio Pro 4" that you have installed?
Was there an Intel version made of "DVD Studio Pro 4" that I don't know about?

  • DVD studio pro not playing entire video

When I use the simulator it only plays a portion of the video, and when I burn it to a DVD it stops at the same point. But both the audio and mpeg2 in the track play all the way through though. What am I doing wrong?

    deadbeatpanda wrote:
So if the project is corrupt, does that mean I just have to re export my project in FCP? I used quicktime conversion and I read that it isn't recommended for exporting to be burned to DVD. I orginally tried to use compressor to get it to mpeg2 for DVD studio and what not so I compressed it again and the same thing happened. I also tried to use the share option in FCP with the DVD option but it exported for over 10 hours and was stuck at 5 minutes remaining for about the last 3 hours so I just cancelled it. This is the first time I have ever had to burn to DVD so sorry for being such a noob. And I have no menu, the DVD just needs to play automatically.
No, the clips do not automatically need to be re-exported. The issue with QuickTime is primarily a quality issue.
As Michael mentions above, the preferred workflow is "File:  Export:  Quicktime movie (NOT quicktime conversion) with current settings.  Take this file into compressor and apply the appropriate dvd preset."
I like to think of the export as a "master" file that I use as a basis for transcoding.
I have little knowledge of the newer output options like Sharing. My experience has been that the things done to "simplify" the work usually compromise quality and frequently don't work well.

  • Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4 built SD video file - Menu 1 screen is WHITE!!

I recently upgraded from FCP 4.5 with DVD Studio Pro 3 to FCS with DVD Studio 4. I have resolved a number of problems with the upgrade by reading "Apply Discussions", however, I need help with the following: When I import my mpeg2 and AC3 files into DVD SP4, I use the DVD SP4 palette to select an Apple Template for my MENU 1. (I like the "Theater Interior" menu template.) When I view the final product with the DVD SP4 simulator, everything is great including the colors in MENU 1. So, I build my program onto my desktop, the same way I did when I had DVD SP3. Now, the problem begins. When I view the built video TS file on my G5 Apple DVD player, or format it to a standard DVD-R with my pioneer 106D burner and play it back on my in-house DVD player, when the program MENU 1 is displayed on the monitor, it is WHITE in color. The menu is set to times out in 20 seconds. Once that happens, the programs runs perfectly. However, what's with the white menu screen? I can barely make out the buttons. When I click on a button, it operates and the color and program work perfectly from that point. I there an option to get rid of the white screen when the menu comes up? Somehow, when DVD SP4 builds the video file, MENU 1 is encoding with a white background rather than with the colors of the Apple template in use. This did not happen with DVD SP3. Can you help me?
    Ugene

try switching the menu encoding from software to hardware (or vice versa) in your DVDSP preferences and see if that makes a difference for you.

  • DVD Studio Pro will not load videos

    Hello,
Ever since I upgraded the latest Quicktime Update I cannot load video assets into DVD Studio Pro. The program keeps locking up.
I have deleted my DVD Studio Pro preferences several times with no success.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mike Kommersmith

When you try to load video assets from the palette, the spinning ball just comes up. I didnt leave it that long before force quiting. But the poster left if for an hour.
I'm using final cut studio. But it all happened on my imac and macbook pro right after the quicktime upgrade.
I did find a work around, which I posted above. Instead of importing thru the palette, just import by clicking file / import/ asset. But the heck would cause the palette to lock up like that? When you force quit dvd studio it says "not responding" next to the program name. I've tried all different video files on my desktop, one at a time. But I dont think the program even gets that far, it just locks up as soon as you hit the palette area of the screen.
I can import audio, stills ,etc without a problem.
I'm just amazed that noone else ran into this problem yet.

  • Does DVD Studio pro support 1080p for HD-DVD?

I can't find this option in the track and menu settings options.

    Eric Pautsch1 wrote:
The spec does support 1080p but Compressor doesn't encode this.
Actually, Compressor does encode 1080p - so long as you limit the definition of 1080p to 23.98 fps.
The 'issue' that Marc is bumping into is the same one that so many of us were first stumped by when we began creating 24p SD DVDs: DVDSP uses the pulldown-rate as the frame rate (so 23.98 Compressor encodes are seen as 29.97 Non-drop Frame) and Tracks must be 29.97 fps to ensure playback because HD-DVD (and Blu-ray) is limited to 1080i over Component video connections.
Also, and I know this seems silly to some, but HD-DVD and Blu-ray players can still be connected to old-school non-HD TVs via Component, S-Video and Composite connections, so 29.97 playback must be assured.
    Hope that helps.

  • Does DVD Studio Pro 3 handle dual layer DVD recorders?

If not is it possible just to output the project as a build and use toast 7 to write to a dual layer machine?
    jmf
    dual G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't believe it will handle burns directly from within DVDSP to a DL burner/disc. You definitely can output a project hard drive and use toast. If you output your project and don't set a layer break, Toast will pick the appropriate spot for you. If you set the layer break yourself, Toast will honor it (if it is on media but not media) if it is in the appropriate locatioin. If you output to an image file and burn the image file, you need to set the layer break yourself AND make sure it is in the correct position since Toast will not be able to change it. If you mount the image file first and burn the project with Toast after that, then Toast can adjust the layer break if it needs to. You would build your project first to your hard drive and make sure there aren't any problems or errors with the build. You would then format your build to your hard drive as an image file, make sure you select the appropriate sized media, and select a layer break that is appropriate. If your image file formats and compiles without a hitch, you should be good to go.

  • FCP, Compressor & DVD Studio Pro Settings: Archiving Old Video

    Hi.
I'm working with FCS2, a Mac Pro, and a Blackmagic Intensity Pro capture card that allows me to import uncompressed SD video.
I bought that card because I have a lot of old SD video, mostly U-Matic and Beta SP, that I want edit someday. I also have some VHS footage (shot in SP mode on a full-size VHS camcorder) that I want to archive to DVD before the tapes turn to dust.
I can't justify buying a VCR/DVD Recorder combo for this job because I only need to dub 6 hours worth of VHS. And I'm guessing I'll get higher quality with the setup I have.
Since I'm essentially just dubbing here, what settings in FCP, Compressor and DVDSP do I need to adjust to give me the highest quality dub possible?
As far as dividing up the video, I was thinking of using 1 hour of VHS to fill each DVD. Is that a good size, or should I go shorter? Would there be a noticeable quality difference if I went down to 45 or even 30 minutes per DVD?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as you post replies. Thanks for your help!
    Fred

I agree with David, rent a Beta SP, then the rental place is responsible for it's maintenance so you are ore likely to get a working unit. Better yet, you can rent a new model with fewer hours on it's heads. Make sure your VHS deck's heads are clean. If you own your own 3/4" deck, clean those heads too. If you are not happy with the playback quality rent one of those as well.
If you are truly looking for best quality, go uncompressed and save it all to a drive, but, to be realistic, how one digitizes the material depends entirely on what format you want to end up with after you do edit it.
I suggest digitizing using the DV50 codec as a good compromise in compression and file size. Here at NBC everything is digitized for air using DV25 codec and it is generally good enough. I also suggest that DVDs, even data DVDs are an unreliable format for long term storage bceauce of their high failure rate.
My advice is to save your money and buy a couple of nice Enterprise quality 1TB drives, mirror them and store all your media there. (of course, get smaller drives if there is less material).
    Good Luck!

  • Medium Scale Production Question? (DVD studio Pro, FCP and Compressor)

    Please Help Me,
Ive made it to the last faze of 50 dvd production project with UNDERWATER video. Im trying to find the most efficient way to begin the DVD formatting process and Id like to think compressor could speed this up.
The underwater video is DV source captured in Final Cut 5, edited and marked with chapter markers for use with the custom DVD Studio Pro Menus.
Each DVD Menu is unique and each chapter marker corresponds with a button already prepared in a DVD studio pro menu.
    Im trying to determine:
    1. Whats the best setting to use for DVD quality (the tapes are no longer than 30 minutes)? My thought was a one pass CBR at 9mpbs.
    2. Can I create a batch process for the video and audio that WILL include the preset chapter markers and be useful in DVD studio pr? Ive attempted this process with the export to compressor setting in FCP 5 and then my custom 9mbs CBR setting in Compressor, but the "chapter" markers do not show up in DVD Studio Pro.
    3. What if any filters should i run over the video in Compressor to improve the quality of the underwater video? de-Interlacing? Color correction?
    4. Does it save me anytime to create this independent .m2v files for use in DVD studio pro or should I just create a export to quicktime file and let DVD studio Pro do the encoding? Does DVD studio pro re-encode the video when i burn my DVD with it?
Please help, ive got to get 29 done by monday and it took me months to get this far. Custom menus, editing, capturing, menu flaws, etc...
    Ryan

    Hi,
9mbs is too high if the discs will be duplicated (as opposed to replicated). 7 would be better. Be sure to compress the audio as Dolby Digital.
Do your color correction in FCP before compression.
    Best Wishes,
    Mitch

  • HD DVD: H264 does it work with DVD STUDIO PRO

I compressed a HD movie from FCP via COMPRESSOR using the HD DVD: H.264 setting, then made a HD DVD in DVD Studio Pro (1280 x 720). It played fine in the Simulator, but then I used Advanced Format & Burn to make a DVD to the Hard drive (img).
When it plays, the movies are jerky, like the movie is sticking or stuttering. I put the "img" on a Powerbook pro and it did the same thing. Does DVD Studio Pro work with the H.264? I noticed it did a conversion when the file was imported.

I am having the same problem. What was the solution?
