Why does dying internal hard drive stop you booting from external hd

Why do I need an internal hard drive if I am booting from an external drive? Doesnt make sense,
Disk Utility warned me that the internal hard drive is failing. I have managed to change start up disks. I have an external bootable drive and even have an empty partition on it, "just in case" I need to install a brand new OS, but here I am waiting for local disks, and I cant access my back-up OS.
Why doesnt OSX just move past the dying faulty hard drive and get to work on the bootable disk? Basically here I am supposedly doing all the right things to cover for an emergency - I may as well have no backup strategy.
Am I missing a step, or is this how OSX works. Perhaps if you read the steps and outcomes below, you can see if there is more I need to do?
If I press "option" at start up, it only shows the internal drive, not recognising the external bootable drive.
fsck -f produced a looping "missing thread" message that went on for an hour or more so I stopped that.
I tried the dvd and command-c at start up, got through to the installer window and when I selected disk utility it hung, but no spinning ball, just nothing was happening.
The next attempt with th DVD i changed start up disk, this time it saw the external bootable drive and I thought I was in business again.
And here I am full circle, waiting for local disks.
Any thoughts most welcome.
btw, does the SMART issue a warning of a failing drive because a drive is definitely unsalvagable due to a mechanical fault? or is there a chance my drive is physiclly healthy but shows as Failing because it has unbelievable directory issues that Apple tools cannot solve - but DW could?

The Bombich forums have helped me troubleshoot the integrity of the bootable volumes on my external hard drive which I made using Carbon Copy Cloner. The clones are fine ie after I reset nvram after booting up via command-alt-o-f, the clones are now recognised when I boot up-alt. So it seems that there was nothing wrong with the bootable volumes on the external drive per se.
However, the Powerbook will still not boot up past "Waiting for local disks".
As it stands now, nobody seems to be able to give a reason why I cannot bypass the failed internal hard drive. I found a Knowledge base article from Apple saying Cmd-Alt-shift-delete at start-up should skip you to the next working volume hitched up to your computer, but that didn't work either.
I have a new internal HDD coming, so prior to installing it, the final part of the troubleshoot will be to reboot the PB without an internal HDD. I will see what happens and see what conclusions can be drawn from that. Unless anyone has a clue now from what I have posted?

  • My internal hard drive no longer boots.  Boots just fine in external usb enclosure.

My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop.  The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure.  It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
    I have tried:
    with disk utilities
    •fixing permissions
    •repairing disk
    in single user mode
    •fsck -fy
    zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.

Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed.  I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

  • Set up to save directly to external Hard Drive so cannot have separate 'back up'I now want to reverse i.e save to internal Hard Drive and 'back up' on external 'hard Drive'. Please advise me how to do this.

Macbook Air 13 inch purchased October 2013. set up to save [mainly photos] to external 'hard drive' i.e. not saved to internal hard drive. Cannot find easy way to create 'back up'. Please advise how I can reverse i.e save directly to internal 'hard drive' and 'back up on external 'hard drive'

For backing up your data I recommend that you use Time machine:

When you import images or create other data files, file them in the appropriate places on your internal drive, don't delete them and let Time machine back them up.

  • Internal hard drive stops working (OS 10.6)

    Hi all,
I was working on my 2009 MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with a number of windows open (Chrome, Word, Mail, Preview), but nothing really heavy. All of a sudden all the pages in Chrome went blank, Word documents would only open blank, and the icons in all Finder windows were blank. I tried to back up some important stuff that I hadn't had a chance to backup since last week, but the machine would not reconize my USB key or my WD external drive, also USB. I tried to shutdown the computer, but it would not properly shut down. I forced it down by holding the power button. After letting it sit about 10 minutes, I restarted it, only to get a folder with a question mark in it. I then tried to choose a startup disk by restarting and holding down the option-key. No luck. No disk was recognized. Then I restarted it and booted from the Snow Leopard install disk, holding down the C-key. I opened Disk Utility, but it did not find my hard drive among the disks connected to the computer, only the OS 10.6 install DVD. I have since shut down the computer and do not know what to do. I have done a lot of work that is not backed up, unfortunately, and would really appreciate any help with this issue.
Does anyone have any idea what could have happened and why it happened out of the blue?
I am running the latest update of Snow Leopard. The machine has worked pretty well in the past and nothing has happened to put the HD at risk; no falls, spills, or anything like that. I have written everything I know/remember about the issue and the machine, but please ask if I can provide further information in order to solve the problem.
I have an appointment at the Genius Bar in a few days, but I need to recover the information on the disk...(!) Have I lost everything?
    Thanks!
Edit: [I forgot to mention that before restarting it while pressing the option-key, I reset the PRAM. Same result, though. Didn't work.]

Hmm... Since your macbook won't recognize it right now, I would reccomend that your remove the hard drive and connect it through your external HDD's connection... Which external drive do you have? I have a Seagate Go Flex in which I can remove the Connector that attaches the external HDD and I can use it to connect any hard drive with a Standard SATA connection.... This might be something you could try... If you ultimate goal is to recover certain files.... That is strange that it won't detect the Hard Drive..... unfortunately that usually means that the drive has failed.... It's happened to a number of my SSD's.... Good Luck... If your wondering what I was speaking of with the Seagate Go flex you can always YOUTUBE it, there are some good videos on how to do this... also if you have a Hard Drive reader that converts from Sata to USB you could also use that....

  • MacBook Pro - Which internal hard drive do you recommend?

I have a mid 2010 13-inch Macbook Pro. I currently have a 250 GB internal hard drive, and with bootcamp and all, I find myself constantly running out of space. I want to upgrade my internal hard drive to 750 GB or 1TB, but I would like the new hard drive to be at the same speed or faster than my stock hard drive.
Could you please recommend me some reliable hard drives? My price range is $0-250. Thank you!

  • Internal Hard drive dismounts when downloading from iTunes Store?

I am having an issue when I download content from the iTunes Store to my Mac Pro.
I have my Media Library on the second Internal Hard drive (an Hitachi). When I download content after a while -usually half-way through a download or after a few minutes if its large amount to data/content (App updates etc) -the second internal hard drive will dismount. Stopping the download and making the disk inaccessible.
The internal hard drive seems to be fine otherwise. It has plenty of space and I use it as a scratch disk for video editing HD content.
To re-mount the disk, I have to do a complete shut down, remove the hard disk (I check for dust/damage etc) and re-insert and re-start the system. If the systems down not pick up the hard drive the first time I try and again and it usually recognized then. I have tried using an external hard drive as well (not sure what make the hard disk is but its an iomega unit) and the same thing has happened.
As you can imagine this is very annoying. I hve a work around currently where I set-up a tempoary Media Libabry on my system disk and download anythin I want from iTunes and then manually move the content to the second drive-not ideal but it works. I have had this issue for a year- so I have been very patient and hoping it would get resolved through updates-as I am sure there ha to been other people with the same issue.
Can anyone help me identify where the problem is? Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? I am stumped and really not sure where to start.

    Hello Nesquik,
Yes, I did notice it too. A lot of noise when downloading, It sure looks as if there is no buffer or not enough buffer. Going back in history when there was no smartdrive
I hope they can fix it, very annoying. Not only because of the noise, but I also get the feeling that my harddrive must be degrading. If you only could say that you want to download on a different location (choosing the SSD) and afterwards moving to the Media Folder on a normal harddrive.

  • Can I still take files off my current (corrupt) internal hard drive if I boot off an external?

    Ok, here's what happened...
My MacBook Pro (2009 I think) suddenly started freezing recently. It would freeze for 10-15mins then work for 2 then freeze again. I opened the disc utility and attempted to verify disc- it failed and told me to restart and hold cmd+R which I did. From here I tried to scan the disc again, it told me to repair the disc. The repair failed.
Now, I have a TM backup from a month ago, but I've done a lot of writing in the last month that I'm desperate to keep. I tried restarting it again with the hope that even if it keeps freezing, I'll be able to get my work off before doing a system restore, but now it turns itself off before loading up.
I have the crazy idea that if I go onto the boot disc utility and download mavericks to a flash pen, then I could boot up off that and hopefully access my internal hard drive from within. Then I could find the work, email it to another location and TM restore the whole shebang. Is this even possible?!
It's currently downloading / installing mavericks on the flash pen.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
    Desperate writer,
    Jon

No. It is not an archival backup. It essentially is a mirror of what is on your hard drive. However, it will not delete those backups until it needs the space.
If you wish to archive them to other storage, you need to use something else (copying in Finder to an external would suffice).

  • Hard Drive Woes; No Boot from CD

I have a 15-inch Flat Panel iMac (800mhz) with a damaged hard drive that will not boot from any CD or DvD - Tiger, Techtools, Diskwarrior Apple Hardware Test, etc.
Techtools and AHT both freeze while booting. OSX Disks give me the "prohibited sign" then freeze after a while.
The iMac will boot from an external firewire drive. I was able to run DiskWarrior from there, and with the help of their excellent tech support, capture what could be salvaged from the internal hard drive.
My goal now is to erase the internal drive and reinstall Tiger on it. I do not know whether the internal drive is in fact failing or if some non-hardware problem caused the crash. I can afford to reinstall and use the iMac with the existing drive, risking another crash, before replacing the hard drive, because the machine is non-essential.
When I boot from the external firewire drive (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility, in the list of drives, I see only the external drive. Not the internal drive, and not the CD. I reset PRAM to no avail and then reset PMU to no avail.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Update . . . .
I was finally able to get the internal hard drive to appear in Disk Utility (by waiting a half-hour).
I partitioned and erased using the helpful procedure outlined here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5629637#5629637
When I attempted to write zeros to the whole drive, Disk Utility froze about half way through.
I rebooted, chose initialize when the OS told me it couldn't read the drive. I'm now installing Tiger.
But I am concerned, based on the process referenced above, that the drive may have bad sectors that haven't been flagged since I couldn't go through the "zeroing out" procedure.
    Should I be worried?
    Thanks,
    Greg

  • Why does restoring a Hard Drive from Time Machine break all my software registration?

I've just upgraded the hard drive in my MacBook Pro using a Time Machine backup. (In the past I've used Carbon Copy cloner to duplicate the drive before installing it, but this seemed like an easier option.) The restore from TM went fine... but now all my apps are acting as if I've just installed them for the first time. Mail and Dropbox went thru their first time startup screens, and are reimporting all my files/messages. Word and Photoshop are asking for the registration serial numbers. What a hassle!
Does anyone know what Time Machine is doing, and why? Why aren't my apps fully restored? And is there any workaround?

I imagine it is because of the way CCC does makes an exact clone of your drive.
Time Machine restores the drive file-by-file and doesn't necessarily restore support files. Most apps know when they've been moved and ask for serial numbers.
However, I have never restored a complete hard drive with Time Machine, so I don't know exactly what to expect.

  • Why does my available hard drive space keep going down?

I am running an iMac with Snow Leopard and Lightroom 3; both the OS and program are installed on a 120GB SSD (I know the setup is a bit dated but bare with me)...
I edit about 4-10GB of RAW files every week, which are stored on a separate 2TB HDD, yet somehow, every week I keep seeing less and less available space on my main SSD drive, now down to only 6GB and I don't have much installed on that drive.
Is there a setting or something I can do to fix this?

The folder that contains your catalog and preview files and other relevant user files is still on your SSD. You can move that entire folder to your external hard drive. After you move it, simply open it in its new location and double-click on the catalog file to start Lightroom.

  • Can I recover data from an internal hard drive that I removed from my MB Pro?

A few months back my HD failed on my MB pro.  I have since then replaced this HD with a SSHD.  My question is can I recover this data from the old hard drive?  I remember when I was at the Genius Bar one of the techs told me there was a company I could send the HD to and they could recover the data.  Does anyone know of such a company?
    Thanks

  • Internal Hard Drive Won't Boot or Mount

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but...
My 24" iMac running 10.5.2 won't start up. Meaning I can't get past the grey screen. I fsck the disk in single user mode and got back "invalid nobe structure (4,19621)" and repairs failed, then quickly shut down. As I understand it the (4,19621) means that the file with catalog node ID 19621 in the Catalog B-Tree portion of the disk directory has an invalid extent entry. I might be wrong here. If any knows how to correct that problem that would be helpful. But thats not the real problem.
I should add I tried to boot from the install DVD and repair the disk with disk utility and it would not repair the disk either.
Disk Utility recognizes the disk as "232.9 GB AAPL Firewire Target Media" and thats all while in target disk mode.
The real problem is the disk won't mount in firewire target disk mode. I would like to try to recover some of the fills that I haven't backed up mainly in my documents folder or repair this problem.
I am going to install (well not me) a new hard drive Monday and have a fresh and new system but in the mean time I would like to try to recover some of my files if possible.
I should add the one time it did mount, all the folders were there but none of the files. And it gave no worrying. I checked the S.M.A.R.T. status and the start up volume yesterday and got the report the disks seems to be okay.
Any help in getting the disk to mount in firewire target disk mode to repair and/or recover some files would help.

Thank you for the reply. That was the best and most logical reply.
DW never got to that point if thats what you are talking about nor did it get past "Inspecting disk" and Step 1: Searching entire disk in final rescue attempt". After hours of the beach ball spinning.
I am not within my apple care 3 years time frame. When they replace the hard drive tomorrow they said they might be able to recover some of my data in my Users folder.
Do you think that is possible?
That is more what I am worried about at this point. All of my important files have been back up there are just a few that weren't.
You confirmed what I was thinking. Thanks

It depends on the noise you are hearing, some of the 7200 RPM drives do make a slight noise, but if it is a clicking noise, then you need to get it serviced

  • PowerBook G4 With New Hard Drive - Can't boot from 10.2 OS Install Disk

My sister's hard drive died so I bought and installed a new Seagate 160GB drive. She has OS 10.2 OS disks but is not sure if they were for this computer. The fact that the computer is copyright 2004, and the disks 2002 makes me wonder. When I try to boot with the 10.2 disk, I never see the drive icon when I'm booting up. Holding keys results in:
Option - Return Arrow and Next Arrow, no drive icons
T - With attached USB DVD drive - only get the strange floating Y with the circle in the middle
None - just the folder and ?
    I've also reset the PRAM.
Are these the right disks? If so, is there something else I need to do to have the computer recognize the CD when booting up?
The disks are white with the Jaguar(?) spotted X. The only text on them say Mac OS X v10.2/Install disk 1; Not for Resale; Version 10.2/2Z691-3706-A; the Mac and Apple logos and the copyright 2002 notice.

    Hi, kjfrey55 -
Typically the OS version that a machine originally shipped with is the minimum OS version it can use.
Based on info from the s/n you gave, your machine is a PowerBook G4 (15 inch) model, with an estimated ship date of Aug '04.
That model originally shipped with OSX 10.3.3. It can not use OSX 10.2.
It can use a retail OSX Panther disk set provided that the version on it is OSX 10.3.4 or higher (if those exist).
It can also use a retail OSX 10.4 (Tiger) disk set.
You may be able to get a replacement original disk set for it from Apple's Customer Service -

  • Upgraded MBPro hard drive, can't boot from hdd or dvd

    Hey all,
I got my mid-2010 15" Macbook Pro back from the Apple store a few days ago (they had replaced a faulty logic board). As the repair forced me to back up my data, I decided it was a good time to upgrade the size of my hard drive.
I slapped a blank WD 1TB in there but when I went to boot off the Snow Leopard DVD, nothing happened--my computer froze on the gray screen with the Apple logo (curiously no spinning wheel populated). It was evident the DVD would eventually spin down as well. I then tried booting off a properly formatted 10.6.3 USB--same results (mind you, my iMac booted the USB with no problem).
After resetting the PRAM (nothing), I booted my MacBook into target disk mode and then used my iMac to install Snow Leopard on the (now initialized) 1TB drive. No issues. iMac was able to boot off my MacBook's hard drive just fine. But when I try booting my MacBook, it hangs at the same grey screen with the Apple logo (even if I hold Option to select the hdd).
To be sure, I cracked my MacBook open again then tried booting with the old 320GB drive--the machine's working just fine, thankfully I didn't seem to screw it up. In fact, I'm writing this from my MacBook that's booted off of my iMac's hard drive through target disk mode.
This is an odd problem if I've ever seen one. It's as if the mere presence of a foreign hard drive has thrown my laptop into a lockdown. I've effectively ruled out a defective hdd and a defective laptop, yet I can't get the two to play nice. The conspiracist inside of me wonders if the new logic board has any "safety" mechanisms to blame...
Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.
    Anthony

S.U. -- Thanks for your help!
I actually got to the bottom of the problem, and it was a much simpler fix than I anticipated. The Snow Leopard DVD I was using was an older version than the one that shipped with my MacBook. As I don't know where that DVD is, I used target disk mode to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook, updated it, and am typing on it right now.
DrBurke--I hope your problem is as simple to solve as mine was.
