Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • Why does my UPS click when I switch to Dashboard?

I have a APC Back-UPS 750, which has worked well for me for several months with my old 21" iMac and various external devices (FW BD burner, FW hard drive, DSL router, speakers w sub). I recently switched to a Mac Mini and TD Display, leaving the other externals as-is. I immediately noticed the UPS clicking and popping, irregularly, every minute or so, sometimes more often, sometimes less. It sounds like something is switching on and off inside the UPS. There is no interruption in power to the devices.
Most bizarrely, I can predicably product the behavior by swicthing betweem the desktop and Dashboard. Sometimes I can even make the UPS click by moving a Finder window around rapidly enough.
Anyone have any ideas re: what's going on here? Googling led me to believe that perhaps I am overloading the UPS (a Mini + TD display does use more power than a 2006 21" iMac), but going through APCs product wizard leads them to suggest... the same product. Adding up all of the power reqs for my hardware does make it appear that the Back-UPS 750 should be big enough.
    Thanks for any ideas. --Chris

While the clicking could be that you're overloading the UPS, I don't think it's that.  I have a client with a 27"
    2011 iMac on a BackUPS750 and it's fine.
More likely is that you're losing AC power intermittently (brownout) or your mains wiring in the walls is having issues.  Corroded terminals or rats chewing on the wiring can cause your wiring to not be able to supply "full power" to the outlet.  I've had both cases at client's offices, where "everything was fine" but the new (more power hungry) computer would reboot spontaneously or the lights would dim briefly when the computer was turned on, etc.
Depending on when your wiring was installed, a few decades ago, aluminum wiring was used and can't handle the loads like copper wiring.  And a few decades ago, the way outlets were wired with the "quick push in" style (rather than using the screw to hold the wire) often is a problem.  I've had many sites that were renovated back in the 80's that much of the "push in" style outlets are intermittent.  Simply moving the wire to the side terminals on the same outlet would fix the issue.
So try plugging the UPS into a different physical outlet.  Ideally, you want the outlet on a different circuit breaker because if the issue is in the whole circuit, just moving to a different physical outlet on the same circuit will still have the same issue.  (If you get desparate, take your computer and UPS to a friend's house for a weekend.  Have a party while you're testing.  In fact, make it a gaming party. )  If moving the computer to ad different outlet/circuit/house "fixes" the clicking, then have an electrician check your outlets.

  • Why does itunes automatically close when I try and listen to a podcast?

When I click iTunes and then click on podcast it automatically closes iTunes.  I can listen to my music but podcast won't play.  why is this and how do i fix it?

If it's just a single podcast that's doing this it may be corrupt.  If that's the case delete it and try re-downlading it.  If it's all podcasts then you may need to restore your phone.  Follow this guide to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414, being sure to back up your phone at step 6 (you will be able to restore your phone to this backup at the end of the process).

  • Why does my website jerk when I switch through the pages?

I just built my website using Adobe Muse CS6 and I am noticing that as I navigate through the pages the menu bar at the bottom of my pages jerks and at times the background image takes a bit to reload. I also notice on my CONTACT US page, the form that I inserted, which I created using Adobe's Form Central, does the same thing.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello,
Whenever you add an HTML on the page, it takes some time to load as it fetches data from other sources.
Like  in this case, if you notice, it is the Facebook Like and Send buttons which takes time to load and while  loading makes the menu flicker.
Same is in the case of Form Central form.

  • Why does firefox automatically go to work offline on my imac desktop computer and not on my laptop Mac.

Firefox goes to work offline when I do not want it to and I have to restart my computer every time in order to get my internet connected again. My laptop has the same firefox and it never goes to work offline.
What setting can I use to prevent firefox from going offline?

You can try to create a new Boolean pref with the name network.manage-offline-status and set the value to false.
Right-click on the about:config page to open the right-click context menu and use "New > Boolean" to create a new Boolean pref.
    Name: network.manage-offline-status
    Value: false

  • Why does Preview automatically resize the text box to cut off the last character of added text? How do I fix it?

Why does Preview automatically resize the text box to cut off the last character of added text? How do I fix it?
I use the Tools > Annotate > Add Text feature, and when I click away after adding text, it automatically changes the text box size such that the last letter -- or last word -- gets bumped off into an invisible line below it, forcing me to manually adjust every single text box. It is highly annoying when trying to complete PDF forms (e.g. job applications).
It appears to be a glitch, quite honestly, an error resulting from Apple's product design. Has it been fixed in the new operating system (for which they want $30)?
I would very much appreciate any help you can provide! Thank you for your time.

hey, just to keep you updated - there is now a fix available for firefox 25, which should address the particular problem of pages not loading unless the mouse is moved.
if you have downgraded to firefox 24 to work around the issue, please go to ''firefox > options > advanced > update'' and turn automatic updates back on. then go to ''firefox > help > about firefox'' which should trigger the update to firefox 25.0.1.

  • How can I stop Foxfire from automatically loading when I turn on my computer that runs on Windows Vista?

Foxfire automatically loads when I boot up my computer after all the other essential programs boot up. I'd like to know how to disable the start-up menu link that allows the program to load up when the computer first starts up because the Foxfire browser isn't needed when I first start the computer. Besides, when I first start my computer, it's inevitably not hooked to the internet and it's just a bit annoying to see foxfire load when it's not needed. Furthermore, it takes up precious memory in the RAM when it's running, thus slowing down my machine. Please, someone show me how to keep this program from booting when I start up my computer. By the way, my system is Windows Vista and Foxfire does not show up in the start-up folder. Only by going to the default program page and clicking on Foxfire does it show that Foxfire has a hidden default that makes it start when the computer starts. All I'm looking for is to not see it when I boot my computer.

Thanks for pointing me to the link about the startup programs changes. I found the solution there. Foxfire was hiding in the hidden startup menu. Once I found it using msconfig, I was able to stop it from loading when I started my computer. Again, thanks for the help.

  • Why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??

why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??
for example, when i am attempting to make a 'all-day' appointment on october 2nd 2011, it automatically shifts it to october 1st.
but if i am doing a timed appointment for only a few hours, it will allow me to put it on that day.
i am trying to put in travel dates so any help on how to fix this, would be greatly appreciated.

    alsdman,
Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."
