Why does file sharing with OS 10.8.3 fail only in one direction?

I'm having trouble getting file sharing to work in both directions.
I have a late 2012 Macmini and an early 2013 MBP, both running OS 10.8.3.
I can get my mini to connect to the MBP, access the public folders, and even share screen.
Going the other way from the MBP, the connection fails.
Taking cues from all the other discussions of the question, I have created an additional
administrator on the MBP and given him sharing only privileges on the mini. Booting in
Safe mode works fine on the MBP. And, I deleted preference lists related to sharing and security
on both machines.
I have verified both HDs, and repaired all permissions with Disk utility.
Although the name of the mini shows up in the sidebar of the MBP, neither admin user on the MBP
succeeds in connecting to the mini. It's always the same message - check the IP, etc.
I'm wondering if I can use Time Machine to back up the one "real" home folder on the MBP,
then completely rebuild the user list on the MBP, restore the home folder from TM, and clear things up that way.
I've been fooling with this since long before the 10.8.3 update. After that update, it frequently failed in either direction
until I started in on it again this morning and got the mini-to-MBP link to work.
Any help will be very greatly appreciated!!
Bob

Thanks, Linc!
I can connect the mini to my wife's AirBook and share her screen.
I can connect via wired connection to a USB printer, as well as to a wireless printer
on our network.
The firewalls on both machines are OFF.
That gave me an idea to connect the two laptops.
I can connect the AirBook to the MBP, but to share screen I must use the
"ask permission" radio button.
I can connect the MBP to the AirBook and access wife's public folder.
Screen sharing option does not come up.
Her firewall is also off.

  • Why does File sharing require internet?

I have two computers, both on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 connected to my router. If I have my WAN cable unplugged from the router or my Internet is not working, I find that when I try to access one computer from the other for Apple File Sharing (AFP), that the finder "Connect to Server function" just spins after I put in the server address of the other Mac. Plug in the Internet, and all is fine. It seems that somehow the Internet is being required. Why? And how do I fix this?
My TCP/IP settings for each machine for the network interface used are:
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address
    IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.[some number greater than 1]
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 192.168.0.1
    Configure IPv6: Off
I am using fixed IP addresses on my LAN rather than DHCP.
    Thanks

PROVEN: IT IS NOT MY ROUTER.
Good isolation testing, and component elimination.
In the first post you said you had been using DHCP with Manual IP address.  In the router elimination test you did not mention Manual address and I get the impression you just allowed normal DHCP assigned IP  addressing.  If my interpretation is correct, that is good.
Stupid question, was Airport turned off during your experiments?  If it was not, it is always possible that the Macs were trying to use WiFi instead of the Ethernet cables.   By default Mac OS X gives priority to Ethernet, however, it is possible that your System Preferences -> Network interface ordering was changed to give Airport a higher preferences over Ethernet.  You would use the Gear icon next to the [+][-][*] icons under your list of interfaces to see/set the interface order.  Ethernet should be 1st in the list.
I think that when you open System Preferences -> Network, the interface list is displayed with the current active interface highlighted, but I never did a riggerous experiment to prove this.
This should work. So I'm going to suggest, as an experiment, you start by booting each Mac into "Safe Mode".  Boot holding the "Shift" key.  This will eliminate any 3rd party extensions from loading, just in case there is a bit of 3rd party software that is interfering.
As a diagnostic experiment please get a copy of "Bonjour Browser" and "WakeOnLan".  Both of these utilities probe the network and give execellent lists of network devices they find on the local LAN.
    <http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/13388/bonjour-browser>
    <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15779/wakeonlan>
You should be able to see the other Mac from the output of each of these utilities.  Bonjour Browser should be able to show you they Apple File Sharing services being offered, and you should see both your Macs listed.  If not then something is blocking the protocol, or for some reason the Mac is not advertising the service.
If you use Applications -> Utilities -> Network Utility you should be able to find out if port 548 is open on the other computer using the port scan option.  It should be, but the question is whether Network Utility can see it through your router.
I have run out of experiments to try.  Hopefully this will shake something loose and allow you to move forward towards a solution.

  • HT201301 I've backed up my iPad and lost a years worth of work in Pages. Is there any way to get it back? I had done file sharing between iPad and Mac but it only saved one of the Pages documents.

I've backed up and updated my ipad and lost a years worth of work in Pages. Is it possible to get it back? Before I updated I tried to do filesharing with my Mac but it would only share 1 document from Pages. All the others have gone.

I reposted the question here where I'm getting advice:

  • Why does my iMessage send text as a text message only to one specific iPhone?

When I am texting someone else who also has an iPhone, we are using iMessage. But a lot of the time my test messages to this person are "sent as text message" in a green bubble, rather than a blue bubble in iMessage. Why could this be? I text various other iPhones and this doesn't happen, it only happens with this one person in particular.

For no apparent reason at all, started only sending messages as text messages. If I tried to send a text as an iMessage, I would get a prompt with an option to send as a text message. I went to an Apple store and found out that somehow I'd been signed out of iMessages. Try this. Go to settings > messages, then make sure you're signed in. If that's the issue, and you log in with your Apple ID, it may take a few minutes to activate.

  • File sharing with accounts

I currently have my TC configured for file sharing with a disk password. Lately, however, I find that I have a need to be able to restrict read/write access to certain folders and files based on the user. But, when I select File Sharing "With Accounts" from the drop down I get a warning message stating "Setting up user accounts will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible." Seems like a pretty vague warning considering the possible outcome!
Does this mean I will lose access to all existing files already on the TC disk permanently, or just until I configure the accounts with access?
    Thanks for any insight.
    - Don

Is the file sharing the same between the TC and the AirPort Extreme 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet) with a USB2 connected disk?
My experience is that the network share of the shared disk is different, but no files get lost. One can move between the security mechanisms without losing data. YMMV.
Here are my findings in detail: I was using the shared disk "With a Disk Password". When connecting from a Mac, a single share called like the partition of the disk would automatically mount. On that disk I put some folders "Music" and "Videos" directly in the root of the mounted share. The same volume also had a backup copy of my Mac mini, that I did when it was still locally connected (USB2 directly to the mini) rather than via Disk sharing. From that time there is still a "Users" folders there. One important folder is called "Shared". All folders and their files are accessible.
    "Volumename" (share)
    - Music
    - Photos
    - Videos
    - Shared
    - Users
When I changed from "With a disk password" to "With accounts", I also get the warning about "...will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible".
After the change, I have no access to "Music", "Photos" or "Videos" anymore.
However, there is still the share called "Volumename", but now it points to the sub folder "Shared" !!!!
When connecting from either Windows or Mac I see two shares. One called "Volumename" and the other matching the user name. I think the user share actually points to /users/username.
When switching back to "With a disk password", all is like it was before - no files are lost, the "Music", "Photos" and "Videos" folders stay there, and so does all their content.
I will now try to move them into the "Shared" folder, so that the share content after switching to Secure Shared Disk "With Accounts" will look the same as the content looked until now.

  • FCE file sharing with FCP...?

I am considering purchasing FCE (and a macbook pro), but need to know a few things from users who have experience with it. First, is FCE totally compatible in terms of file sharing with FCP? I'm a beginer and need to learn editing. I just completed production on a film. My editor, who is also my filmmaking partner has FCP with all the bells and whistles. I live in California, he lives in Georgia. I'm hoping to supplement the editing process as we begin putting the film together from opposite sides of the country. Will I be able to do so with FCE, or will there be a problem opening certain filters and plugins from FCP?
Also I was wondering, if I do purchase FCE will I get an upgrade price break when and if I move up to FCP?
Any help and advice would be mucho appreciated. Thanks

    Hi
    Exactly as Tom writes.
But there are some tools in FCP that are that great that they could justify for
    taking the full step.
Colorcorrecting - three ways (not to mention the extra program Color™)
MultiCamera editing - This to be able to edit as real life all Cameras at once
and You even don't need to be anything like precise - only adjust a second or two
    afterwards.
A two Camera one hour documentation used to take about 10 to edit in FCE FOR ME
and I've done same in FCP in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
    It was mind blowing.
But there is a price-tag I know it hurts and an upgrade program would benefit
the Apple brand (as they usually does)

can we get apple to make a fix to download that would enable the bluetooth file sharing with any deivce? i would like to to stay with Apple iphone but if they dont improve the lack of features.. i will move on and I know im not the only person to think like this.

There is not "fix" to be provided, Apple made a decision to not include the file sharing profile.
You are welcome to provide feedback, but after six years, I would not hold your breath.

  • File sharing with multiple users on one Mac

I have two Macs, both of which ca seen each other across the network. My question regards file sharing with multiple users on the same computer. When file sharing, are the files from all users available across the network, or just those of the user presently logged in? The issue is that I am trying to access files from a user who isn't currently logged in, but another user on that computer is. I need to get into that person's documents, but I don't see a way to navigate to their documents folder.

Right, I got that. But the computer is in constant use by User A, while I need access to User B's files. I could need access at anytime, and it would be a pain to make User A log off and log in as User B everytime. I was just wondering if there is anyway to access User B's files in this situation, without logging User B in.

  • Back to My Mac/VNC/Screen and File Sharing with a PC

Ok back to my mac is great but it doesn't work with a pc. What is the best alternative to screen and file sharing with a PC???
    Thanks,

    Use VNC.
    On the PC.

    On the PocketPC

Apple's Remote Desktop allows for VNC control through a password.

  • Vista file sharing with OS 10.3.4

Are there known issues with Windows Vista OS connecting and file sharing with Mac OS 10.3.4? We can connect Windows XP with Mac OS 10.3.4, but two Vista machines cannot. Any ideas?

Maybe a lack of support for something the Vista OS uses.
Mac OS 10.3.9 was always mountable and writable from XP. I would set up a folder on a large disk on my MDD (10.3.9) for my wife to connect to with her work laptop running XP, to use as a backup area. Printing was also extremely easy from XP to a USB printer attached to 10.3.9.

Why does print sharing keep unchecking?

If your information footer is correct, you need to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7.2 or higher, then iCloud will appear in the system preferences window.

why does my 4s with ios7 wifi keep disconnecting/reconnecting?

Same problem here. It just keeps connecting/disconnecting indefinitely. This does not started immediately after IO7 upgrade and it does not happen all the time. Sometimes it does it, sometimes not. Very frustrating. So far no solution found.
