Why does FiOS give such a lousy router???

Using the cruddy Actiontec MI424-WR router that came from Verizon FiOS, I was getting 15/15 internet speeds over WiFi.  This was for the 50/25 plan I signed up for.  If I hardwired to the router I got 58/39.  So Verizon does deliver the speed they promise, but the router stinks big time.
I researched solutions online and saw all kinds of replies, with some saying due to the limitations of WiFi technology, there is nothing Verizon can do about the slow speeds over that connection.
Just to see, I turned off the wireless on my MI424-WR and hooked up an old Cisco E2500 that we brought us when we relocated from Japan with the military.  Now my WiFi speed is 58/38.
So, Verizon does deliver a great speed but then they limit themselves by using such an awful router.
Why?

I have been getting absolutely horrible wifi speeds with this router. It's so bad that I can't even watch YouTube videos withut them pausing and buffering. Hard wired, my speeds are close to what is advertised, but I just did a couple speed tests on my wifi connected desktop, and was pretty constant at 3 to 4 Mbps download and upload but this is my latest. I feel like I'm back in the 80's and using dialup to connect to QLink!

  • Why does Java have such a large footprint?

I've been curious about this topic for a while, but I haven't ever looked into this to any depth. I also posted this to stackoverflow but haven't gotten any solid responses so far:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1107991/why-does-java-have-such-a-large-footprint
Java - or at least Sun's Hotspot JVM - has long had a reputation for having a very large memory footprint. What exactly is it about the JVM that gives it this reputation? I'd be interested in a detailed breakdown: how much memory goes to the runtime? (The JIT? The GC/memory management? The classloader?) Anything related to "auxiliary" APIs like JNI/JVMTI? The standard libraries? (Which parts get how much?) Any other major components?
I realize that this may not be straightforward to answer without a concrete application plus VM configuration, so just to narrow things down at least somewhat: I'm primarily interested in default/typical VM configurations, and in a baseline console "Hello world" app as well as any real-world desktop or server app. (I'm suspecting that a substantial part of the JVM's footprint is largely independent of the app itself, and it is in this part that I'd like to zoom in, ideally.)
I have a couple of other closely related questions:
Other similar technology, such as .NET/mono, don't exhibit nearly the same footprint. Why is this the case?
I've read somewhere on the intarwebs that a large portion of the footprint is due simply to the size of the standard libraries. If this is the case, then why is so much of the standard libraries being loaded up front?
Are there any efforts (JSRs, whatever) to tame the memory footprint? The closest thing I've come across is a project to reduce the on-disk footprint of the JVM [1] and to modularize the standard library [2].
I'm sure that the footprint has varied over the past decade or so with every new version of Java. Are there any specific numbers/charts chronicling precisely how the JVM's footprint has changed?

Presumably versus some other VM. I would suppose the fact that much of the VM is written in java has something to do with it.

Not sure I agree with that. What size do you see with a .Net app that uses 3.0/3.5?
I've read somewhere on the intarwebs that a large portion of the footprint is due simply to the size of the standard libraries. If this is the case, then why is so much of the standard libraries being loaded up front?
Good question. There is a feature that allows multiple VMs to use the same memory footprint version of the loaded libraries. That is a new feature and it isn't clear to me if it covers the entire API. I do not know if that is dynamically built.

I have a local LAN DNS server. My preferences point to that server. Why does dig give me 8.8.8.8 as my DNS server?
Something is/was modifying my DNS preferences to 8.8.8.8 It seems to be pointed correctly now (at my local LAN DNS server), but why was it pointed at 8.8.8.8 before? I never want it pointed to 8.8.8.8

You've hit the nail on the head Ben.  For point to point communications, the IP addresses should be fixed, therefore there is no need for DNS.  If a DNS is configured, the NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers will try to contact it.
In my test system, I need DNS for the test computer, but I am communicating with a dedicated Spectrum Analyzer over TCP/IP.  So I added a second NIC.  The main NIC is configured for DNS and all that jazz.  The second NIC (plugged into PCI slot) is configured with a hard coded address, no DNS, no Gateway, nothing else.  I connect that NIC to the spectrum analyzer using a crossover cable.  The analyzer is configured with a hard coded address also.  Now my computer can get on our company network, and the spectrum analyzer is isolated from the network, so it can't catch any viruses, etc., and it still talks to the computer.  When using a configuration such as this, it is best to use a dedicated address for the 2nd NIC and spectrum analyzer in the range of 192.168.100.0 to 254

  • When adjusting the audio volume in a selected region, why does it give me a curved line instead of straight and why cant I change it like i can with a fade in our out?

When adjusting the audio volume in a selected region, why does it give me a curved line as a transition instead of straight, and why cant I change the fade shape like i can with a fade in our out? When I slide thet volume all the way down it makes a very abrupt down curve. It's audibly noticdible.
    Thank you.

Use the range selection tool and select the portion of the clip you want to change the volume on. Drag the volume line down and FCP will create keyframes which you can adjust as you want to get a fade shape.

  • Why does rebooting give devices different nodes in /dev?

I am using OS X 10.9.4, but this is an issue I've noticed on earlier OS versions. Currently I have an issue with a USB modem hooked up to my iMac (and I have a question that ties in, indirectly with this here), but I've noticed this with other devices.
I have one modem that is set up to receive faxes that is permanently assigned to /dev/cu.usbmodem0000001. It doesn't seem to ever change. When I first plugged in my new modem, it was /dev/cu.usbmodem2. (I had a crappy modem plugged in for a while - I think that was originally /dev/cu.usbmodem1.) I had to unplug it and when I plugged it back in it was /dev/cu.usbmodem3. When I saw this, I wanted to be sure it had changed and it wasn't my memory, so I unplugged it, waited, and plugged it in again and it was /dev/cu.usbmodem4.
I added it to my printers and faxes and thought nothing more about it, but then when I rebooted, my software couldn't find it, so I checked the files and found it as now /dev/cu.usbmodem1.
I would have thought the OS would keep track (using something like UUIDs) of the devices so they can be given the same node each time.
Why does OS X keep changing this around for the same device? Why does my one fax modem (same brand and model as the new one) always have the same device node and this newer modem have one that changes so easily? And is there anything I can do so this modem gets the same node each time it's plugged in or when the computer reboots?
I've asked this same question on Stack Exchange:
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/138591/why-do-usb-devices-change-nodes- on-reboot

I may be getting old, and my eyesight isn't as good as it can be, but I can clearly see that in example 2 and 3 you are not dividing by 0.047. So example 2 and 3 are not the same operation as example 1. The outputs of example 2 and 3 are completely dependent on the signals you are getting. Have you actually looked at those? You are using dynamic data which regulars such as myself absolutely detest. Be that as it may, you should look at the values you are feeding into the operation. I don't understand what you mean by "I see post-divide values in the signal".

  • Why does 3Dmark05 give me this error?

This is a version I got off Limewire and its not full retail. Its only a demo. Got this error:
    IDirect #DDevice9:Present failed:Device lost(D3DERR_Divice Lost)
I have the latest drivers off the Nvidia website. What gives? Never used 3d05 before, but I was just testing my new ASUS hybrid card with various benchmarks to make sure things seem to be running right. I do get a posted score in 3dmark05, even though it kicks me out and zaps my screen temporarily to 800X600. 3dmark05, after clicking the ok buttun after the error message posts my score 3,106 which seems about right seeing that I have a slower system.
So far I have only benched this card, havent played any games for more then ten minutes. graphics seem better.Im not seeing the improvements in Far Cry that I though I would get from a 6800GT on full settings. I know this is a DDR128, but I just though things would be a smoother. Clarity is much better then the 9800pro and this card runs suppringly cool that 6600GT I tested was dangerously hot and I didnt want anything that hot in my case.
I dont think there is anything wrong with the card. I tested a 6600GT the other week and the this 6800GT hybrid did get me from 43K to 46K on Aquamark3. My 9800pro was at 41K with a slight overclock.....maybe I try some Farcrytests to see if that shows anything...
BTW I just was going to tell you have the latest drivers and was going to post the version, because after I got the card up and running I downloaded the latest from Nvidia.  Why does my Display Adapter when I click on properties say "7/9/2004" version "6.2.1.1"?....Now when I ran the driver update, it said it was updating the drivers and the drivers name they were version 9/13/05?

    Quote
    >It sounds like the version you got may be damaged. I would try getting the download directly from futuremark. The link >to download it is http://www.futuremark.com/download/?3dmark05.shtmlQuote
I tried it with another version of 3Dmark05 and got the same error. I also noticed it does it during the CPU test where it tries to make the CPU think its a GPU. I found this:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/default.asp?url=/archive/en-us/directx9_c/directx/graphics/programmingguide/gettingstarted/devices/lostdevices.asp
I also checked around the net. Seems like there are two reasons for this "lost" error. A resident program pissing 3dmark05 or a voltage issue....I havent had any problems with my system and only have then with 3dmark05. This is with a new version of 3dmark05 and newest drivers installed after Driver Cleaner. SO I still dont know whats up....Again it only does it durring the CPU test for 3Dmark05 and in particular always errors out right when the monster is emerging from the water During the zepplin test.

    >As far as the jump is scores, that does not seem like enough going from the 9800 to the 6800. I was able to play >FarCry on my machine will ultra settings with my 9800 (but no anti-aliasing or ansiotropic filtering). And only going from >41k to 46k with aquamark also seems low. Did you use a drivercleaner to fully remove your ATI drivers? If not I would >remove both the NVidia drivers and get the cleaner and clean both ATI and NVidia drivers off of the system and >reinstall your NVidia drivers.Quote
In my previous post I noted that I was only using the ASUS drivers dated 4/05. Well I went back and used Driver Cleaner then tested. The scores were about the same, but gameplay and visuals were much smoother as I would expect from a card like this. I though that was odd given I had  pretty much the same scores(meaning Aquamark stayed the same and 3dmark went up about 300 points). I then went back to Nvidias site and got the newest drivers and they loaded right this time
Aquamark: increased 1,000 overal to a solid 47,000-47,500  (I was getting 41K with 9800pro,XTbios OC)
    3dmark03: 9608 (from 9137)
3dmark05: same score no changes (as noted above still errors out at CPU test)
Thanks for the input I am VERY happy to be running solid 47000-47500 Aquamarks where as before I was runnign 45500-46000 with driver issues. I not as familiar with 3dmark scores and how the differences pan out when playing games. But you mentioned that My scored seemed low. Is this 47,500 more like what you thought? Also remember the card that I have is a 16,6 6800 GT but has 1ddr128. In this review this guy only gets for 3Dmark03 10,290(vs my 9,608) but he has a 64 bit system. In another review using 3Dmark05 the guy gets 3,838 vs my 4,060 Here the card with some scores:

    http://www.ap0calypse.com/showthread.php?t=1287
    Things of note:
1.) Graphics seemed less chopy by just using driver cleaner, but scored stayed about the same.
2.) After gettting the latest drivers too. Aquamark showed a significant change, yet 3d05 stay the same
3.) Question Driver Cleaner said to "empty the recycle bin" while in safe mode. I couldnt do this. How do I do that?
4.) All this with the 1.3 Far Cry patch makes the game much nicer. I can do Full Blast settings, but there is some screen rippple every 15 seconds or so. Not to bad, But not flawlwss like a 64 bit system.

  • Why does FiOS internet take so long to connect when I boot my computer?

Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.    M424WR modem/router.    Every time I turn on my computer or even if I reboot, internet takes up to 2 minutes to be able to use.    My computer doesn't detect any internet connection until, it seems, it's good and ready.   The modem is NEVER turned off and everything else in the house dependant on the internet connection doesn't have a problem.   Phones, wireless lap tops, or the PS3.    Why does it do this?  I have put IHA messenger on manual in startup.  But I still get the same problem.   Is there any way to fix this?  It's so annoying.
    And Please, Verizon support, don't send me any private messages that say to call verizon support or asking me to send you my verizon account info.  I absolutely HATE that when you guys do that.   I'm not spending half my day on hold, and you don't need to know that to answer why the computer is taking so long to find the internet connection.   If you don't know why it's doing it, then say you don't know why, or better yet, don't even respond at all.  {Please keep your posts courteous}

I have both an XP machine and a Win7 laptop. Both take time after booting to access the network.  The culprit is Norton (Symantec). In both cases it runs a security check BEFORE it allows network access.
You may not have Symantec products installed, but if you have any other antivirus software it it probably doing the same thing.

  • Why does firefox give an update an then not allow it to install

A new update or add-on called screen shot so i installed then it said "firefox has blocked this" and had the "allow" button; my question is why do they give you an up date or add on and then don't allow it?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I clicked install updates

Not cool. I actually liked Firefox until this kind of thing started. Seems like they're going the way of Microsoft and trying to ram updates down your throat whether you like it or not. I thought Mozilla was all about giving the user a lot of control over Firefox???... Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth to waste, and not everyone wants the updates.
    Not cool Mozilla, not cool.
Is there any official suggestion/comment box where I can express my discontent of this function?

  • Why Does FIOS Quantum Offer Less than Comcast Xfinity?

It is coming time for my FIOS contract to be renewed and I am having a hard time justifying renewing it.  FIOS Quantum was a huge disappointment for us because:
    1. The Remote control lag is terrible, even trying all the reboots etc. IR remotes have been around for ages, this should work, AND it's ridiculous to have to shutdown and reboot all the set top boxes to fix a memory leak at this stage of programming.
    2. Althoough the VMS1100 has eSATA ports, they are not enabled.  You cannot export shows to a computer or an external hard drive, both of which I could do with TiVo.
    3. ALthough FIOS has an app for my iPad, all I can do is "see" and set up recordings, I can't watch anything from my DVR on my iPad or a Windows PC, AND the FIOS app ONLY works when it's on the same WiFi Network as the DVR, it doesn't;t work over the Internet.
In theory at least Comcast Xfinity does all of the above.
So my question is, why should I stick with FIOS?  I hve read the forums for months and there is no word from Verizon that they acknowledge these deficits to Xfinity, much less that they have any plans to address these shortfalls in the future.
Without the hope that Verizon is addressing their shortcomings, maybe it is time to move on to what seems to be the better wide area connected service.

I agree. They have stolen more of my life then that even.

  • Why does Adobe sell such ****** products and provide no meaningful support?

I bought a boxed copy of Lightroom 5 from a national electronics retailer.  Loaded up LR and immediately after accepting my serial number LR locks up and keeps sending a message saying "An error occurred attempting to change modules".  I reloaded LR twice and got the same message.  I searched the internet and found this error message to be fairly common.  A link took me to a page that offered five possible fixes.  Tried all five but still the same result. Trashed earlier upload and retried 4 more times.  Same result.
At this point, I decided Lightroom is not for me, after spending 3.5 hours just try to get the program loaded and operational, I can only image how frustrating it must be to actually try and use this app.  Couple that with all the bad reviews online of LR's operational quirks.  So - I take my LR boxed set with all receipts and paperwork back to the retailer and the retailer says they can't give me a refund because of Adobe copyright issues!  How convenient is that!?!  The customer is in an immediate double-bind situation - in order to see if it works, you have to open the package - but if it doesn't work, you're **** out of luck!  I just threw away $162.44 on crap that doesn't even load, and which the manufacturer, ADOBE, doesn't even support.  Directing me to post my problem on a bulletin board and wait patiently for an answer is not "Support"!
If this practice isn't close to being criminal, it should be.  All I can say is "DON'T BUY ADOBE SOFTWARE, ESPECIALLY LIGHTROOM"
    Rick Lloyd
A disappointed, frustrated, and angry customer

As you could probably figure if you cooled down first, most people don't have the problems you're having.
I recommend deep breaths, and either work out the issues or accept bad luck and use a different software.
Don't get me wrong - Lr does indeed have some aggravating bugs (and design quirks..), but none have ever been prohibitive, for me anyway..
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • What is ANT HAL Service and why does it have such insanely many permissions?

What the subject says. What does it do? Why is it there?

    Had this happen myself.
It does have something to do with Spotlight/searching. Should go away after a while, or so I have heard from other users, 'cause it hasn't stopped driving me and my fan mad yet.
Am going to have my MacBook index and follow-up on indexing and whatever else it feels is necessary to finally allow me to search in peace over the weekend while locking it away where I can't hear it.
    Hopefully that does the trick.
If it wasn't for things working better/faster and most things looking better I might actually consider taking Leopard off again ...

  • Why does osx yosemite crash the wifi router?

Upgraded to Yosemite, with MBP retina and my wifi router a Netgear CG 3100 D 28 PAUS crashes every time I connect up. I have turned off wifi and then forgot the connection and then reconnected with no joy. It continued to crash the router forcing it to reboot. I reinstalled back to mavericks and there was no problem and the wifi and router were stable and worked well. Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have the same problem than you. After updating to Yosemite yesterday, my internet connection through a Netgear CG 3100 cable modem stopped, but only with the updated computer, the rest of my devices seems to connect well. After going back to Mavericks, everything work well again.
Is there might be an incompatibility between Yosemite and this cable modem?
