Why does Firefox 18 ignore the specified character encoding for websites?

We are developing a page on our website that will have the page crawled and a newsletter generated and sent out to a mailing list. Many email packages default to character encoding of iso-8859-1 so we have set our character encoding to this on the page via the standard meta tag.
We have a problem on the newsletters that we had until now been unsuccessful to replicate. Though now I know why.... I have just discovered that in Firefox 18, the specified character encoding is being completely ignored. It is rendering the page in UTF-8 even though we specified ISO-8859-1. Firefox 3.6 however, renders the page with the proper encoding (thank god for keeping an old version for testing).
Can anyone explain why the new Firefox is completely ignoring the meta tag? Both browsers are using the factory default (I even opened FF18 in safe mode)...

Thanks for letting me know that Firefox 18 ignores everything but the server headers... but it doesn't help me much. Our website is in UFT-8... but this page is a newsletter, one that is crawled and saved into an email and sent out to a mailing list (by a third party newsletter program) and many email readers use ISO-8859-1 hence why we want to have the page rendered in that encoding so that we can actually test the newsletter properly. We can't test through the third party software as our testing environment is behind a firewall, and you can't change the server headers for a single page... hence the meta tag.
If you explicitly choose to render a page in a specific encoding, that shouldn't be ignored by the browser. It's not a big deal, but now every time we make a code change in our test environment and reload the page we have to force the encoding manually in the browser which is a pain.
The problem is, the newsletter is already live and we have some users complaining because some characters aren't displaying properly in their email packages (Entourage for Mac is one of them), all our testing (which is encoding using UTF-8) looks fine.

  • Why does firefox ignore the exceptions I entered and disallow pop ups from sites that I have listed to be "allowed"

sometimes the pop up blocker allows the exceptions I have listed but most of the time it does not. Is there any way to fix it so that it always allows the exceptions?

It is possible that you run into this pop-up maximum (the default value is 20).

  • Why does Firefox remove the URL from the query string?

    Hello there,
I've writing a servlet to read data from a file stored on a server. I'm using an HTTP <INPUT TYPE=file > element to locate the file to be read. When I run the servlet using IE as the browser it works fine. When I try running it using Firefox, the path to the file is not included in the query string. The full URL to the file shows up in the file input text field but then mysteriously disappears from the query string. Without the path, the servlet can't locate the file and the servlet fails. How do I get Firefox to include the path in the query string or is there some other workaround for this problem. I want my servlet to work on all types of browsers.
    thanks,
    grant

Well you may also ask it the other way. Why does Microsoft send the full path file with the input type="file" component?
The purpose of this control is to upload a file from the client to the server. That file is sent with the request.
It does not allow you to browse server files at all. Most probably you are working on your developer machine where the client IS the server, so it works right now.
    It won't once they're seperate.
<input type="file"> is the wrong tool to use to browser the server. You need to write your own html pages to do that.

  • Why does Firefox trigger the UAC warning each time I open it?

I design websites and test them across most browsers. We use Windows 7 operating system, and only Firefox triggers the User Account Control message on our test computers, which is a major annoyance when opening instances of Firefox in rapidfire order as web designers do. Is there a way to disable it? The UAC is not triggered by Opera, Safari, Chrome and we have made sure we have not checked properties-compatibility tab - "Run this program as administrator" in both the Firefox.exe file as well as any desktop shortcuts - as advised by several people and contributors to Firefox forums. But that doesn't have an effect. Each time we test, we get the Windows 7 UAC message. We've written to Microsoft several times and they have not replied. We thought perhaps you'd have a solution that actually works.
    Thanks

I reinstalled first without deleting everything and then as you suggested. The program now comes up ok when I log in as administrator. However, it is the only program I have that suddenly won't work as a non-administrator without requesting that the administrator approve it to make changes to my computer. I have looked at the permissions and they are the same as for WordPerfect, for example. I don't expect that this program makes changes to my computer that will bother any other users.
Why does Windows 7 think that Firefox is going to change the computer for other users?

  • Why does Firefox open the printer dialogue box whenever it starts up

When Firefox opens the printer dialogue box automatically opens - why and how do I stop it doing this.
This never used to happen on previous versions of firefox

Some web pages will pop up the print dialog automatically. In particular, pages that websites have specially formatted for printing may do this.
Are you restoring tabs that you previously opened, or starting up with your home page(s)? I suspect that one of them is generating the dialog. You could check by going to each one and reloading the page to see whether it is from that page.

  • Why does Firefox change the filenames of pdfs when it opens them? They go from normal names to 8-digit random letter/number sequences

When I click to open a PDF from Firefox it behaves very strangely. Instead of opening the PDF with its original filename (say for example: Report_on_the_weather.pdf) it changes the file name on opening. They open up with random 8-digit filenames (for example 5918Bd01.pdf). It does this for all PDF files. I would like to stop this behabviour. Any ideas?
    My configuration:
    Firefox 4
    Windows XP
Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Standard (not the Reader, the full standard application)

cor-el, thanks for responding. As it turns out the machine was compromised, probably due to the Java upgade from 6.x to the supposedly current 7.x version. I suspect one of the 'always open' tabs in my profile was aimed at a site that had been compromised to exploit the java vulnerability that has not apparently been fixed yet.
After removing Java, a current Panda AV scan detected three bad jar files. Further testing with MSCONFIG found a file in startup that did not belong, turns out to be a new exploit with very little coverage on virustotal (neither Panda nor McAfee detected it as malware) but as soon as it was taken out of the startup, Firefox started working perfectly.
Firefox was the parakeet in the cave, tipping over to let me know something was wrong.
The machine is in quarantine until a much more complete analysis is done. We may still rebuild it to be certain.
I'm giving you a 'solved' on this because the windows safe mode boot pointed the way to determining the problem.

  • Why does Firefox select the last used printer instead of the system default printer on startup?

In the course of using Firefox I selected my color printer to print in color then closed Firefox. When I reopened Firefox later on and sent something to the printer I had assumed it picked up the system default printer, a monochrome laserjet. It picked up the color printer instead. When I restart my other apps they automatically pick up the default printer. Why not Firefox?

Some web pages will pop up the print dialog automatically. In particular, pages that websites have specially formatted for printing may do this.

  • Why does Firefox say "This Connection is Untrusted" for most websites?

Firefox tells me the connection isn't trusted for pretty much every site I attempt to go to. I can't bypass it and I have tried everything I read in the support articles, changed settings, resetting and restarting etc. Nothing works. Please help!

Check the date and time in the clock on your computer: (double) click the clock icon on the Windows Taskbar.
Check out why the site is untrusted and click "Technical Details to expand this section.<br>If the certificate is not trusted because no issuer chain was provided (sec_error_unknown_issuer) then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.
You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.
*Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"
Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".
*Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer of the certificate.
You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.
If "I Understand the Risks" is missing then this page may be opened in an (i)frame and in that case try the right-click context menu and use "This Frame: Open Frame in New Tab".
Note that some firewalls monitor (secure) connections and that programs like Sendori or FiddlerRoot can intercept connections and send their own certificate instead of the website's certificate.
    * Name associated with your security software, such as ESET, BitDefender, etc.
    * FiddlerRoot (usually indicates unwanted software being installed named similarly to BrowserSafeguard, BrowserSafe, SafeGuard; see [/questions/982532#answer-520145])
    * Sendori (indicates unwanted software from Sendori; see [/questions/861138])

  • Why does Firefox disable some Japanese character sets?

Firefox 3.5.5 on Mac. Started yesterday at a point. My Japanese character selection (Kotoeri) disables all but Romaji. The only way to get others (like Hiragana and Katakana) back is to restart Firefox. It seems visiting certain web sites may trigger it, but don't know exactly. Why is this happening?
It started from one of these and their links:
    http://www.yamatoamerica.com/
    http://www.ocsworld.com/
    http://www.dhl.com/
I tried to recreate the situation, but couldn't. I will report back if I find one that triggers.

You can check for issues caused by plugins (plugins are not affected by Safe mode).

You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

  • Why does Firefox remember the pages I've visited, even though I am using different computers? I've never used the sync function. I don't want my computer at work to be synched with my personal computer at home

My computer at work remembers the pages I've visited even though I visited the pages while I was using my computer at my home. I don't know how or why this is happening, and I don't like that it is in sync with my computer at home - I have never used that function.
For example - When I type in "the methodist hospital" into the search bar using the computer at home, all the search results come up from Google, so I click on the links and take a look around on the websites/pages. The next day, I walk into work, and I type in "the methodist hospital" again in the search bar, and when the results come up - it indicates in gray lettering that "[I] visited this page [yesterday's date]."
Please explain why this is happening and what I must do in order for it to stop. It is scary knowing that my browsing history is remembered using 2 completely different computers. Needless to say, I don't want my boss thinking I'm just surfing the web all day at work.
    Thanks in advance!

if i have to read any comment by matt n again i will throw up...in my mouth. i have gone all over google trying to figure out what the f ff did to me without my permission, i have updates turned off so there should be no prompting to restart, there should be a polite offer not a forced update. i am angry and so are a ton of people.
everytime i go to a new complaint, another angry fellow ff user there is matt n with his infuriating smiling little picture...telling me about the awesome safety and security of the new ff...ignoring that a supposed safe but ugly and unusable browser is worse than a customized, beautiful, well functioning browser...with supposed safety issues. i am so angry i cannot express how this has wasted my time. i have been online for 2 hours now figuring out how to fix, apparently i cannot. my old theme is not compatible now...so i am screwed.
good bye. if i wanted chrome i would have had chrome. but i have no choice now.

  • Why does Firefox remove the top portion of my Persona when I'm not showing the Menu Bar?

Under View > Toolbars you can show and hide the Toolbars you want, but when you choose to hide the Menu Bar, it cuts off about a centimeter of my Persona. A centimeter doesn't sound like much but on an image that is only about 10 centimeters tall in the first place, removing one from the top makes the picture unbalanced. Personas that don't have a boarder are even worse because it actually cuts off part of the detail of the image. Could that be fixed in a future patch?

It still chops off the top of the personas :( I think I'll uninstall v8 and go back to v3 Firefox, those were the glory days! haha

  • Why does Firefox disable the Uninstall button on incompatible and disabled extensions (which should be removed)?

I guess I'm just OCD because I don't want to see a bunch of incompatible and disabled extensions on my list but I can't be the only person who would like to remove them. It seems the obvious choice ... but it is unavailable. Why?

Please don't dodge the question. People have normal adds-ons and extentions that when become incomparable are greyed out and there is no way to uninstall it. Mine is Java at this time. Mine is an extension. I haven't had this enabled since 7 came out apparently I don't need it. So I would like to save space and take the darn thing off the computer. But I can't find a way. Can you please help me? thanks

  • Why does Firefox (after the latest update) open an additional tab "What's new"? It causes my laptop to crash, including my "Session restore"

Mozilla Fireox Session Restore fully functioned. However, not after latest update (10.0.2). It takes a lot time to load the (additional tab) page "what's new?" / "Firefox add-ons" after which the script running Session Restore fails.
    Only occurs after (re)starting laptop.
How do I remove this addional tab ?
    It's irritating.

    Hi Murdock_1,
You should look at [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox+has+just+updated+tab+shows+each+time+you+start+Firefox this article about that specific issue] and the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved]. These should give you all the information you need!
    If that doesn't work:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
    Hopefully this helps!
