Why does Firefox download .docx files as octet-stream?

When I try to open or download files that have the .docx extension FireFox 5.0.1 says they are octet-stream. Internet Explorer 8 opens and downloads the files correctly. Do I need to switch browsers or is there a easy "fix?"

As what kind of files does Firefox save the .docx files?
Firefox will always offer to save files that are send as application/octet-stream

Why does firefox's internet files take so much space on hard drive? For example, I have 9,80GD on disk and after looked 2 video on youtube(2-3 min each) it's become 9,60GB. It's 200MB gone!

If you did not see the dialog box asking if you wanted to delete from the hard drive, I think this may be one of those options where you can say "Don't ask again," meaning until you trash your iTunes prefs, it will cease asking the question.
you can bring those dialogs back. iTunes > preferences > advanced > reset all dialog warnings

  • When I have an image on the screen and try to save it why does firefox download it again?

I am on a certain web site and an image is displayed on the screen. I want to save it to my PC. Instead of saving the one already downloaded and displayed Firefox downloads it again. This is a nuisance it wastes time and bandwidth. Is there any way to correct this? Some people have suggested 'save images' but this is no help whatsoever as the same thing happens.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode (Never Remember History).
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
*Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Cache because Firefox will disable the disk cache in such a case
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

  • Why does Firefox download EVERYTHING, even stuff I don't ask it to download, like EVERY pdf file I land on???

  • Why does firefox download stop at 61%

I am running windows 7 ultimate. Why I try to download firefox the files start to extract but stop at 61%.
Tried turning off windows firewall but did not help.

Oh, oh, oh! That's my fault. I thought you were talking about downloads in Firefox weren't working. Sorry!
I'm assuming you downloaded from www.getfirefox.com. You can try the full setup file and not the Stub exe offered on the Mozilla site

  • Why does browser download a file rather than displaying it?

I am using a Nexus 7 device. I have a website locally on the device together with all of the data files. When I use the browser to select a file it does not need to download it. I want it to call up a list of the programs that can display the file so that I can select which app to use. When I leave that app then I expect it to go back to the browser and the HTML web page I was previou. sly viewing. It has done that at various times but has stopped now. How do I get it to resume displaying the files rather than downloading them onto the same device?

  • When saving an image, why does Firefox download it again, although it is already downloaded and displayed?

If you right click an image on a website and choose "save image", it will be downloaded again. It is already in the browser cache though. There are addons which let you pick it from the cache.
Why doesn't Firefox just save the cached image and instead downloads it again? There seems to be no obvious rationale to do it like that (and lots to use the cached version).

Thanks you, but that's not an answer to my question.
I'm not looking for workarounds. I would like to know (preferably from someone at Mozilla) why the browser works this way and if they are going to change it.

  • Why does Firefox search for Files, Folders and Sizes during the install?

Every time I install an upgrade to Firefox is scans for File Size, Files and Folders... Why?

I reset Firefox a second time and now everything seems to be working fine, as you described: "The Forward slash (/) worked for quick find and the Apostrophe (') worked for Quick Find Links Only."
    Thanks.

  • Why does the Downloads Save files to Browse button do nothing when pressed?

I'm trying to download a couple of different files from a couple of different web sites. I see the "Opening {filename}" dialog box with the "Would you like to save this file?" question and the Save File button, but nothing happens when I click on the Save File button except that the dialog box closes.
When I go into Tools/Options General tab, I select the "Save files to" button, and when I click on the Browse button to choose a directory, nothing happens.
It appears I can no longer download files.

Please disregard. My "My Documents" folder is mapped to a file server on the network, and for some reason the last time I logged in, I was denied access to that network resource. I logged out and logged back in again, and I am able to download successfully.
    D'oh.

  • Why does firefox download as a device to be saved to?

When I download Firefox 26 it acts as a device to be saved to on the Macbook Air.  Also every time I open Firefox a window opens but and warns of something but I cannot recall that uness I close everything down again, and I would have to redo this email.
    Thanks for any help.

You need to mount the disk image and copy the appliction over to your Applications folder, or if it is a package installer (looks like cardboard box), double-click that.
The warning you are getting is because it is running from a read only disk.
Once you move the application, you can eject the disk image.

  • Why does a downloaded epub file get the flv extension added to the filename?

I created an ePub file that works fine. I used the Creative Cloud version of inDesign on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.7.
I emailed to someone to view. The recipient was going to download the ePub to her Mac and sync with her iPad.
She was using Safari and gmail. She received the email with the attachment. When she clicked download in the email next to the attachment, it downloaded but added the .flv extension to the file.
With this extension, the file could not be added to the iTunes library. Removing the .flv so that the filename was restored to the original with the .epub extension, all worked just fine.
I set all .epub files to be opened by Adobe Digital Editions on my computer.
I replicated the same situation on my Mac with Safari and gmail. Then, I tried with my yahoo email account. Same situation, file downloads but gets .flv extension added. Guess I can't blame gmail.
Tried with Chrome and file downloaded with correct name, no extra extension.
Tried with Entourage and file save with .epub, no extra extension.
Have not yet tried this on a windows machine but will do so in a bit and report back with results.
How can I prevent the extra extension?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Just checked this on a Windows 8 laptop.
Went to gmail. Opened the message and downloaded the ePub file. It downloaded just exactly as expected. No change to the file name.
I zipped up a folder with the ePub file inside and tried that zip file. I emailed the zip file to my gmail account and then downloaded the zip file and unzipped it. The ePub file came through the process with no alteration to its name.
As long as I send the ePub inside a zip, I don't seem to have a problem.
I would still like to know how to prevent the change in name when I email just the ePub file, though.
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • Why does Firefox for android spring open when I clear notifications or open files?

    Latest Firefox for android
    Android KitKat
Why does Firefox spring open, even after I quit, because I have cleared notifications or opened a file I downloaded. I have double checked Firefox is NOT set to open images or videos automatically, es

ES File Manager is my default player for almost all media. Firefox is not set to default.
Here is a step by step.
I see a picture I like so I download it. Firefox has now sent me a notification that the download is complete. After eventually closing the browser, I then clear notifications. Upon doing so, Firefox opens, regardless of whether it was running in the background or truly closed.
    Thanks

Why does the Download Firefox doesn't offer me a language choice iso immediately deciding I have to like downloading it in e.g. Dutch because I'm e.g. in Brussels-a cosmopolitan city?
When going to firefox.com and clicking the download button, immediately I get directed to the dutch / Nederlands version of the site and I only get the choice to download Firefox Dutch/Nederlands.
I want the English version. Wouldn't it be better to ALSO have an option to select the language, wherever the software detects you're getting your internet connexion from?
