Why does Firefox download EVERYTHING, even stuff I don't ask it to download, like EVERY pdf file I land on???

The so-called download helper is downloading every pdf file I happen to land on. I don't want to download everything on every web page I visit! I tried to find how to make it manual, but can't find it in options or anywhere.

WHEN I OPEN A .pdf document using ADOBE READER 11.0.2 BEHAVIOR is described BELOW. I CANNOT BE MORE COGENT.
It occurs both within Adobe Reader functions, such as page printing options, and in all APPLICATIONS (Gmail, Word, etc) once I close .pdf document.
SOLUTION: I MUST POWER DOWN/UP EACH TIME I USE ADOBE READER. THIS IS IDIOCY.
1. Keyboard appears RESET to display numbers ONLY, and numbers displayed to DO NOT CORRESPOND to numbers I TYPE.
AFTER ADOBE READER IS CLOSED I type "A" into say, an email address field and a random number, say, "9" appears in the field not an "A".
WHILE IN ADOBE READER I type "23" into the .pdf "go to page" field, and get other numbers completely.
Happens ONLY when I open a .pdf file with Adobe Reader 11.0.2 (XI).
Both behaviors occur whether I open a download .pdf file or attempt to open a .pdf via search engine Google + my Browsers.
2. Operating System = Windows 7.
3. My Browser = Internet Explorer 9 or Mozilla Foxfire; behavior is identical on either. Search engine used is Google.

Why does Firefox install updates even though I told it NOT TO ??

I have (I mean "had") Firefox 17.0 on Windows 7 64-bit.
In Options -> Advanced -> Update I selected to "Never check for updates".
Also, in "about:config":
- app.update.auto is false
- app.update.enabled is false
- browser.search.update is false
I didn't change these settings for months.
I basically don't want that idiot auto-update thing to work. I want to update my browser when I want to update my browser. And it kind of worked for a while: I updated from FF 12.0 directly to 17.0.
But today I just started my browser like I always do and it just updated itself to v18.0. WTF ??? Why is it soooo hard for Firefox to understand that: I WILL UPDATE YOU WHEN AND IF I WANT !!!
Is there some hidden setting that I missed or what ?
EDIT: I just realized what the problem was... it was kind of my fault (but not really)... You may delete this question.

After that it cannot be started again. This is with Firefox Portable but I think I've had this problem the normal Firefox. With the portable version I can just back up a single folder but it is still time wasting and annoying.

Fire Fox updates itself even after I tell it not to. The new version it updates to crashes, adobe flash player doesn't work on it and it takes forever to load when it does work. I have used fire fox for years now but if this keeps up I will find something else to use.

Why does Firefox show as an external drive on my Mac when I download.

When I download Firefox using the 3 step guide for my Mac, the icon is shown as an external drive and not the usual Firefox icon. I drag it into the Apps folder as suggested, but when I try to follow the next steps to place in the dock it will not do it. I try clicking on the icon to open firefox but nothing works. Thanks for getting back to me.... You are right I missed the bit where you have to drag the icon across on the display that pops up. It is not clear that you have to do this. I was dragging the dmg file from the desktop into my Apps folder which was the mistake. All good now and Firefox is working nicely. Thanks

ES File Manager is my default player for almost all media. Firefox is not set to default.
Here is a step by step.
I see a picture I like so I download it. Firefox has now sent me a notification that the download is complete. After eventually closing the browser, I then clear notifications. Upon doing so, Firefox opens, regardless of whether it was running in the background or truly closed.

First off they are not even pop ups....your crap blocks everything and don't save user names &/or passwords when you have it checked. Also in your tutorials about solving this issue says it has the word "OPTION" .......no, it never says option to allow you to bypass it and etc. Only thing is says is "ALLOW" . That would be nice , but the problem is it will not allow it from then on. It only allows it right then and then you have to refresh...after that to open again it blocks it again.....HOW STUPID?!!!!!

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

Suddenly all my tabs closed. Then Windows told me I had a gazillion infections. The main problem with malware is that it uses the installation to proliferate by contacting hostile servers to download more of the same rogue code.
Firefox doesn't have the option to "Run" a file. You can only "Save File" or "Cancel". If you downloaded it with IE8, then yes, you can run it, but that's not what I wanted you to do.
What you should do now is to disable System Restore. You can open System Properties by hitting the Windows logo key and Pause/Break key together. Then click the "System Restore" tab. Then checkmark the box which says "''Turn off System Restore on all drives''". Reboot to clear its contents. System Restore unfortunately makes a backup of all executables which includes viruses so that when you reboot without deleting them first, System Restore reinstates them again.
After you complete that step, run Avast and Malwarebytes again to make sure the system is clean.
Then go to the Windows Update site (link on your start menu) and install the missing patches which enabled your machine to become infected in the first place.
Once the system is clean, repeat step one to download Firefox again, but please do not run the file. If you don't see the option to "Save File", cancel the download, but it should be there. I have used Firefox for years, as the fastest and most reliable browser for me, esp in China... not anymore! Last month (unknown to me) a hijacker called Vosteran took over my Firefox browser. I finally realized it and got it cleaned up using Malwarebytes anti-malware, and downloaded a new Firefox... now SAME problem exists, even with Vosteran removed!
Firefox will not allow me into ANY normal sites, saying they don't have the proper security code. This includes my Yahoo front page, email account, ESPN and other common sites that are certainly NOT dangerous. So, WHY does Firefox not work anymore? It is useless to me here in China the way it works now.

Why does it behave when some link is clicked when there is no internet? It should just say internet not available or some crap. Why die, sulk, crash?? I don't get it! 3 series was much much much better!

I should add, I've re-downloaded Firefox, but that doesn't look like it has helped any. Still get seemingly inexplicable crashes.

OK, so here’s my question. I have been using Firefox for years; it’s a wonderful piece of software and an excellent browser. Recently I’ve been having problems with plugin-container.exe. The general advice has been to make sure that Flash Player is up to date (10.3.183.7) and that Firefox is up to date (6.0.1). I still have problems, particularly on YouTube and the new 4Od site, so much so that I used about:config to disable “dom.ipc.plugins.enabled”, I set the value to false. Plugin-container.exe was, prior to this, hogging all the CPU it could get its grubby little mits on, this no longer happens but whilst watching 4Od Firefox eats my entire CPU and the rendered video stream is filled with stutter, almost like frame dropping. It’s fun to watch Firefox struggle, but its no fun trying to watch a program. In desperation I downloaded and installed Chrome. Watching 4Od my CPU usage dropped from 98-100% down to 82%. I don’t particularly want to use Chrome but I do increasingly use my browser to watch streaming video content. Incidentally, if I use Firefox to watch the BBC Iplayer I only burn 35% CPU using Firefox. Oh, and I’m XPSP3, up to date.
How do I solve this stuttering problem?
Is this a codec issue with-in Flash Player?
Does 4Od use some sort of unsupported codec?
I can’t be the only one out on this limb and I know the problem solvers like a good challenge. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

I upgraded to one of the latest versions of Firefox, and it's better in some ways. It loads much faster than previous versions, but when I try to look at certain websites - the Globe and Mail is one of them - I get messages like "waiting for beta images" and Firefox just sits there and I can't look at the site.
