Why does Firefox have trouble displaying certain Unicode Plane 1 characters (specifically, Phoenician)?

Hi. I'm trying to get Firefox to display characters from ancient scripts. I have installed all the necessary fonts, and changed the encoding to Unicode. When I try to view Phoenician and Imperial Aramaic characters (other scripts too), I just get boxes with numbers (10900 and so forth). I have a laptop that is able to display these characters but I need to be able to see them on my current system.

Try installing the font "aegean".
You can find the font here

By the way, have you read

  • Why does firefox have trouble scrolling up and down?

happens in facebook, google+, and even addon screen, and even this screen (the question form i am typing in right now)
when i try to scroll up or down it takes a second or so and then jumps, rather than scrolling

i am curious what autoscrolling does, no difference; the others were checked already
i think it has to do with the memory stack becoming too large, after much browsing, multiple tabs, etc.
it works ok, if it is recently opened with just a few tabs
what really worked for me was:

  • Why does Firefox have to make it so difficult to get answers--I am not going to be able to check the website to see what anyone might reply to my question on crashing?

I have no way of checking to see if anyone answers this. Why does Firefox have to make it so difficult?
What does this means: DLL C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\MOZCRT19.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
Suddenly all my tabs closed. Then Windows told me I had a gazillion infections. Then a tiny strip appeared saying it was Firefox and these little blocks started to fill up the little strip as if it were downloading something--there was no way to cancel this so I cut the power. Now when I try to use the Firefox icon, I get the message above.
Am I supposed to remove the old Firefox stuff and start from scratch? I am stuck using Internet Explorer.
I went to the Firefox website and tried to download it again, but McAffee jumped in and said there is something wrong with Firefox and I should register with them that I am downloading Firefox (I do not have McAffee). Then I got a security warning saying Firefox is not safe.
I am completely at a loss as to what to do next, since I don't understand any of this mumbojumbo.

Here's the story on one of your infections, namely JS:Redirector-EH[Trj]: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Trojan%3aJS%2fRedirector.H
The main problem with malware is that it uses the installation to proliferate by contacting hostile servers to download more of the same rogue code.
Firefox doesn't have the option to "Run" a file. You can only "Save File" or "Cancel". If you downloaded it with IE8, then yes, you can run it, but that's not what I wanted you to do.
What you should do now is to disable System Restore. You can open System Properties by hitting the Windows logo key and Pause/Break key together. Then click the "System Restore" tab. Then checkmark the box which says "''Turn off System Restore on all drives''". Reboot to clear its contents. System Restore unfortunately makes a backup of all executables which includes viruses so that when you reboot without deleting them first, System Restore reinstates them again.
After you complete that step, run Avast and Malwarebytes again to make sure the system is clean.
Then go to the Windows Update site (link on your start menu) and install the missing patches which enabled your machine to become infected in the first place.
Once the system is clean, repeat step one to download Firefox again, but please do not run the file. If you don't see the option to "Save File", cancel the download, but it should be there. You can use this direct download link to download FF4.0.1 [http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-4.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US Download Firefox 4.0.1]
Run the file after you download it to the desktop.

  • Why does Firefox have to beg for money, like the winos on the street ?

Why does firefox have to beg for money, like winos on the street ? If I had the money to donate, I gladly would, but I'm disabled on a fixed income and cannot afford to give money to anyone. I ran my own websites a few times, and never once begged for money to pay for my websites. Do you think everyone just sits back on their stack of cash, watching for any vultures that come around ? I've used firefox for 10 years, but if I'm no longer wanted, I will leave. Should I skip a few meals so I can send you 10 dollars, or cancel my doctor's visit for next week ? Maybe I could rake some yards in the neighborhood and make some extra money ? Wait, I can't walk but about 5 minutes, darn ! I had already dropped firefox for this very reason, and I thought the begging would be over, but it's still here ! Even microsoft and google recommend firefox ! It's a great browser, but I just can't afford to give money away. Maybe I could stop feeding my cat, I've heard they can survive without a human's help ? One of us would likely start eating the other ! Here kitty kitty !

You don't have to donate - just ignore the request and move on with your day.

  • Why does Firefox have 2 separate version-release-schedules?

I am on 3.6.25 and it's been upgrading within the 3.6 family even while v.9.0.1 is already out there. What is the reason behind the two parallel release schedules and why does it not just upgrade to 9.0.1 automatically?

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

I can confirm the odd character display. Xterm will display the problem Unifont characters, but there are column alignment problems at all but a few point sizes.  Many of the glyphs require two columns, but I don't know what difficulties that presents for font designers or terminal emulator programmers.
Very few monospace fonts include these seldom used arrow symbols. If you truly need the arrows, you might try Everson Mono or Code2000 from the AUR. They include some of the glyphs in the problem range.

  • Why does Firefox no longer display .php suffix web pages which are in my Mac?

I have a question about Firefox 14.0.1 displaying .php suffix web page files which are in a Mac running Mountain Lion OS 10.8. In eaarlier versions of Mac OS, for example 10.4.7, I was able to see properly displayed web page files with .html and .php suffixes when those web page files were in my computer. I refer to seeing the page as it should properly display, not seeing the source code. If a page had a .php suffix, the browser displayed the page properly although any php scripts embedded in that page were ignored.
Apple occasionallly updated its OS and browser makers occasionally updated browsers. One day, I noticed that Safari no longer displayed web page files in my Mac if those pages had a .php suffix. However, Firefox and other browsers continued to display web page files with .php suffixes although the embedded php scripts were ignored.
Now, I have Mountain Lion in iMac.
I can no longer see .php suffix web page files in my computer regarless of the browser I use. No browser displays those pages.
A .php suffix web page file which Firefox and other browsers display in 10.4.7 does not display in 10.8 if that web page file is in the computer.
In my computer, I have html and php suffix web page files I want to see using a browser. The files I want to see and the browser both are in my computer. Html files display perfectly with one exception: if php scripts are embedded in the html files, the scripts are ignored. A file the name of which ends with ".php" will not be displayed regardless of whether there is a php script in the file. Safari displays the source code only. Chrome does not display the file at all. Firefox and SeaMonkey, which displayed .php suffix web page files in earlier versions of the Mac OSm now respond to such pages by providing a dialog box which seems to assume that the file is about to be downloaded from the Internet. The dialog box asks me if I want to use the browser to open the file or if I want to save it to disk. The file is on the disk at the time, and the computer is disconnected from the Internet. I click that I want to use the browser to open the file. Then the dialong box reopens with the same question. This happens over and over. I never get to see a web page file in my computer the name of which ends with ".php". With Firefox 14.0.1, I can see .php suffix web pages which are on the Internet or in a 10.4.7 Mac but not in a 10.8 Mac. Did I miconfigure Firefox? It seems unlikely that Firefox lost the ability to display pages in Mac OS 10.8 which it displays in `10.4.7. How can I solve this web page display problem?

Haroon mentions two solutions. I used the easier one, which is to start the Apache webserver already in Mountain Lion and to enable the php already in Mountain Lion. It worked. I see the file correctly displayed with html, css, and php. I see the page by using Firefox. I enter an address in the address bar. For example, the address might be "localhost/example/example.php". I cannot see the page by using Firefox's "Open File ..." menu option or by dragging the file's icon onto Firefox's icon. I tried using your solution also but was unable to find the specific preference to modify. I found the page of preferences which may be modified but I could not find the one I need. I found a list of descriptions of the preferences at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries
but I could not find the specific preference which I need.
By the way, to enable loading the php module, one uncomments a line of code by deleting the initial "#" character, and one does that by pressing control key and "P" key while the cursor is over the "#" character.
Also by the way, when I use Firefox or Safari to look at the Apache web directory in which my files are, the files are listed case sensitively. For example, the files are listed: Ace, Zygote, bar. This is because lower case follows upper case. THis annoys me. I prefer case insensitive listing. When I llok directly athe directory without using a browser, the files are listed case insensitively. For example, they are listed: Ace, bar, Zygote. I guess taht Apache is doing this.

  • Why does Bridge have trouble with accents in filenames?

We work in an in-house studio with Creative Suite 4. Being in Montreal, Canada, many of our documents have accented characters in the file and folder names. When Bridge attempt to display these accented filenames, occasionally the capital letters get converted to lowercase letters and a trip to the Finder window (we are on OS X 10.5 and 10.6) shows folders doubling, tripling and then going back to normal with no human intervention, as if 'springing' on its own. The files are on a mounted server. The folders and files are created through Adobe Bridge CS4 or through the dialog box in InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4 and/or Photoshop CS4.
I've posted a video on my Dropbox account so you can see the problem.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4289569/Business/jumping%20window.mov
We've contacted Apple and they say it's not their problem. Is there a known bug regarding this that Adobe is aware of?

understand the need for your use) is no problem on a stand alone

I believe it has more to do with the use of working with a server. For best
answers you could open a case with Adobe Tech Support using the contact

Hopefully you get a better answer from them then from 'not our problem'

  • Why does Firefox have a constant problem finding servers?

Firefox is constantly unable to find servers, even after succesfully loading a web page. When I hit reload it scampers off and finds the server immediately (most of the time -- occasionally I have to punch it twice), but if I leave the tab open, sure as death and taxes, the message will reappear after a while. It doesn't matter what website I am on. Also, I have recently lost the ability to right click on a blank spot on a page and select "reload every ____", where I could select from a variety of time intervals for the page to reload automatically. Before this feature quit, when I had it enabled there seemed to be fewer "can't find server" episodes, but perhaps it was just that the reload would hit every once in a while and the server would miraculously appear.
I would dearly love to fix this. It has not happened in previous versions of Firefox. (I assume I have the latest version, because it updates automatically.) I don't like IE and Chrome is so cheerfully nosy that I rarely use it.
I have talked to others who have had this problem to the extent that they don’t use Firefox anymore. I have used it practically since the begats and I don’t want to jump ship. Please help.

Note that Firefox uses the "chrome://" protocol to access its own internal files and also access files from extensions, so that has nothing to do with Google Chrome.

  • Why does Safari have trouble connecting to the web?

I keep getting the message, Safari cannot open the page, because your iPad is not connected to the internet. I have reset my wifi connection daily, unplugged my router, plugged it back in. I shut my iPad down with the power button. I have called my internet provider. But the problem continues daily. My lap top has no problems, or the Windows Tablet.

    New information about the problem:
I discovered the apple applications work when I have a wired ethernet connection to the wireless router but they don't work when I'm only connected wirelessly. Are there settings in the router I should check? I still wonder why it's only apple apps having this issue.

  • Why does Firefox have problems printing Yahoo finance portfolio pages?

Current versions (34.0) of Firefox on Windows and Mac both have printing problems when printing from the Yahoo Finance portfolio website. I don't have problems when printing from IE, Safari, or Opera. Firefox prints a header on page 1 then pages 2 and 3 on top of each other. It doesn't include every stock that I had in my portfolio either. The portfolio page has an interesting feature where it keeps the header of the page at the top and scrolls the rest of the page under it. This probably is what is messing up FF's printing but the other browser vendors don't have a problem. I'm working this problem for my father-in-law who's running Windows 7 while I'm on a Mac running Yosemite. I can duplicate the problem on Windows 7, XP, and OSX all running the latest version of FF. To test, I created a portfolio with a bunch of random stocks then tries printing. I got perfect output on every browser except FF.
Sorry, I'm not installing any other Firefox software. This problem is on the platforms I mentioned. I can submit a pdf of sample output, both good and bad, if you like.

More info. I have AdBlock running and thought that might have been the reason I could print from Safari but installing AdBlock on Firefox gave me the same results. Yahoo has a bunch of ads under the header and some use Flash. Having them there doesn't affect printing on other web browsers. I created a pdf file then opened it in a drawing problem and noticed a huge blank block in the middle of page one. This is what is pushing the stock data down to page 2. It shouldn't be there so FF is interpreting the ad area with the scrolling as a large block instead of ignoring it. I added three images. The first shows a correct page 1 (Safari), while the next two show how FF prints it.

  • Why does Firefox have so many unresposive script errors?

Firefox 22.0 (on Mac) seems to be a dog. It continually stops responding and gives so many "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding" errors.
Either Facebook have done something, or there is an incompatibility between Flash, Firefox and Facebook or something. (Flash 11.7.700.225)
I have had this before with other Firefox builds - but this time it is occurring multiple times each time I am on Facebook
Thinking of trying Chrome if this keeps up - although I am reluctant to hand yet even more privacy info over to Google.
The only plugin I use is Flash. I run the default theme, and the only add-ons I have are Adblock Plus 2.2.4, Adblock Plus Pop-up Add-on 0.8 and the English (Australian) Dictionary 2.1.2
I wish each so-called 'security upgrade' came with a message that 'this version is a dog' - it is not only causing issues it is not compatible and has disable my "Easy Youtube Video Downloader 6.8"
As per the Mozilla Help I have disabled "hardware acceleration" and also changed the value for "dom.max_script_run_time" to 20 - neither helped in any way.
    Far from happy Mozilla

Thank you for your "copy and paste" reply. It is very obvious that you did NOT read my original post.
If you had you would have noticed:
    a) I stated: "I run the default theme"
    and that
b)I stated: "I have disabled "hardware acceleration""
c)I stated: "changed the value for "dom.max_script_run_time" to 20 "
(both of which are in response to the linked help article that you recommended - and neither of which did any good)
    d) I also stated: "The only plugin I use is Flash"
(which is the latest up-to-date version and if Firefox cannot run with Flash it is of no use as a browser)
I will try "Safe Mode" and post how that works after browsing Facebook - but it should not be necessary to do this.
I had reported similar issues with Firefox two or three builds back (Firefox 19.0.2) then the issue was fixed for a couple of builds - and now with the release of Firefox 22.0 (on Mac) it is as bad or worse than ever.
