Why does firefox open after i uninstalled it and installed google chrome

i uninstalled firefox, then installed google chrome. often i will be on chrome and firefox opens a window with porn sites and multiple tabs. how is this possible after being uninstalled. and this only happens on my girlfriends desktop. On mine i dont get anything like that.

First of all you need to run some malware scans, it sounds like the computer has been infected. Try running several malware scanners, you can use any of the following:
* [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php Malwarebytes]
* [http://www.superantispyware.com/ SUPERAntiSpyware]
* [http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php Lavasoft Ad-Aware]
* [http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx Windows Defender] (If you use Microsoft Security Essentials then you will not need to use Windows Defender)
As for Firefox appearing, that implies it has not been uninstalled. The [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox uninstalling Firefox] article shows how to manually remove Firefox if the uninstaller failed.

  • Why does Firefox open with both my Homepage and the 'Welcome to Firefox' tab, and how can I suppress the 'Welcome to Firefox' page?

    When Firefox loads, both my Homepage and the 'Welcome to Firefox' pages open. How do I suppress the 'Welcome to Firefox' page/tab?

    Hi Sean,
    Try this:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
    It's a bit more "technical" than most people want, but it should work.

  • Why does FireFox open as a very small box in the top l/h corner and i have to resize it every time

    Why does FireFox open as a very small box in the top l/h corner and i have to resize it every time this only occurs on the initial opening up of F/Fx after boot-up

    Open the system menu via Alt+Space and see if you can resize that window.<br />
    If that works then close Firefox (File > Exit/Quit) to save that setting.

  • Why does Firefox open new tabs when HOME is clicked?

    I just upgraded to version 29.0 from a 4 year old version and I'm experiencing a problem that I can't imagine how to correct. I have two home pages set in my config, so that when I open firefox I get two tabs displayed. My Home Page field reads "https://www.google.com|https://news.google.com" When I open Firefox I get two tabs, one for Google and one for Google News.
    On my old version, if I was in the first tab & navigated to www.hp.com and then later clicked HOME, Firefox would load that tab back to google. If I was in the second tab, it would navigate that tab back to google as well. The multiple Home page option was just a great help for initialization.
    Now, regardless of what tab I'm in, when I click "HOME" Firefox opens two new pages, sets the first to my first home and the second to my second home and now I have FOUR tabs open. Click home again and I have 6 tabs, again and 8 tabs, etc.
    There has to be a way to fix this. The HOME button is supposed to operate of the current focus, just as it does if you have a single home page specified.

    Hi Stan, what both Ed and I are saying is that the first of your home pages should open ''in the current tab you're viewing'' -- the way you want -- because that's what happens for us.
    Could you repeat the test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
    You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
    After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • Why does Firefox open the printer dialogue box whenever it starts up

    When Firefox opens the printer dialogue box automatically opens - why and how do I stop it doing this.
    This never used to happen on previous versions of firefox

    Some web pages will pop up the print dialog automatically. In particular, pages that websites have specially formatted for printing may do this.
    Are you restoring tabs that you previously opened, or starting up with your home page(s)? I suspect that one of them is generating the dialog. You could check by going to each one and reloading the page to see whether it is from that page.

  • Why does Firefox open another Start Page tab everytime I hit the home key (which take me to my homepage on the current tab)?

    When I hit the home key Firefox takes me back to my homepage (AOL) but also opens up a new Mozilla Firefox Start Page tab. I end up with a whole bunch of unwanted tabs.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == always

    Hello Ginna.
    Please check the following:
    Click on '''Tools> Options'''.
    Then click on '''General'''.
    Now, it should say: '''http://aol.com/''' (or similar), but please check if it has anything after that. For example, if there is a '''|''' after it, that tells FF to open up 2 pages when you hit the home button: AOL and the other page, which in this case is a blank page.
    If you see a '''|''' in there, go ahead and adjust it or remove it, if you'd like. If not, please report back here and let me know!

  • Why does firefox open so many Plugin Containers?

    When I open firefox it opened quite a few PluginContainer.exe. Here is a picture of all the processes. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/lucastars/WTF.jpg I did not do a session restore. My Home Page is the default homepage for firefox.

    Thank you for your "copy and paste" reply. It is very obvious that you did NOT read my original post.
    If you had you would have noticed:
    a) I stated: "I run the default theme"
    and that
    b)I stated: "I have disabled "hardware acceleration""
    c)I stated: "changed the value for "dom.max_script_run_time" to 20 "
    (both of which are in response to the linked help article that you recommended - and neither of which did any good)
    d) I also stated: "The only plugin I use is Flash"
    (which is the latest up-to-date version and if Firefox cannot run with Flash it is of no use as a browser)
    I will try "Safe Mode" and post how that works after browsing Facebook - but it should not be necessary to do this.
    I had reported similar issues with Firefox two or three builds back (Firefox 19.0.2) then the issue was fixed for a couple of builds - and now with the release of Firefox 22.0 (on Mac) it is as bad or worse than ever.

  • Why does Firefox 31 change all PDF icons and opening in browser, require a fix using REGEDIT to fix for ALL USERS on a computer?

    The solution to use REGEDIT in the question linked below almost fixed my trouble with PDF files on over 30 computers, with several users on each computer:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1013642
    But I needed to fix it for ALL users on a computer, without logging onto each account, on each computer. My fix was to logon as administrator and change the following system-global key instead:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.pdf
    Name: Default
    Type: Reg_SZ
    Data: FirefoxHtm
    Changed the data from FirefoxHtm to AcroExch.Document.11
    I use Adobe Reader XI on Win7 Pro, 64-bit machines.
    The problem started when I ran a downloaded file to install the new version of Firefox on the computers.
    Why would Firefox require me to use REGEDIT in this manner to fix the problem?

    This only happens when you set Firefox as the default browser and Firefox thinks that there is currently no application the handles PDF files.

  • Why does Firefox need to control my mic and my camera?

    To install Firefox on my phone I must first accept these permissions.
    Hardware Control:
    Record audio:- Allow application to access the audio record path.
    Take pictures and video. Allow application to take pictures and video with the camera. This allows the application AT ANY TIME TO COLLECT IMAGES THE CAMERA IS SEEING.
    I have stopped using Facebook Apps and many Google products because they what this sort of contol and basically I don't trust them.
    Why do so many apps need such spying power? and where can I download an old version of Firefox.android that pre dates this control freaky version? After all it used to work just fine without.
    Thanks
    Jonpon

    making permissions optional and controllable for the users is something that would have to be implemented on the OS level. if you have a device with android 4.3 or above it might already work through this hack: www.androidpolice.com/2013/07/25/app-ops-android-4-3s-hidden-app-permission-manager-control-permissions-for-individual-apps/

  • Why does the update change my home page and make Google so prevelant?

    Several of the last "updates" involved the changing of my bookmarks and home page,. The so called update required me to spend more time in refreshing the browser to its previous condition. This is frustrating to say the least. Second why does the updated version of of firefox seem to favor google?

    Normally, an update does not change your home page...
    What did you home page change to? That might help identify the source of the problem.
    I assume you have tried changing your home page back to your preferred site, either in the Options dialog or using one of the other methods:
    * [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
    * [[How to set the home page]]
    Did that work at all? By "at all" I mean:
    * Immediately after making the change, if you click the Home button, or launch a new window using Ctrl+n, does your preferred page load? Or is that ignored?
    * Does the setting revert later in your session (you see in Options it has changed)?
    * Does the setting revert after you exit and start Firefox up again?
    * Is the problem only when you use your Firefox desktop shortcut?
    With that information, it will be easier to recommend a solution.
    I'm not sure I understand your second question. Google has always been the default search provider in Firefox. Are you seeing even more Google than that?

  • Why does Firefox close after being opened for too long with no activity?

    I need to leave an image loop playing on my computer continuously but the internet browser seems to time out after being opened for more than 14 hours. Is there a way to keep my internet browser opened with out activity for as long as I choose?

    This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.
    '''https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997866''' {web link}
    From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
    issue may be caused by the clear history settings. It was suppose
    to have been fixed in v30.
    Press the '''Alt''' or '''F10''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Privacy'''.
    The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
    At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
    At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
    '''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.

  • Why does Firefox freeze every time I try to install Adobe Flash player? I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it with and without the plugin container.

    When I have Adobe Flash player installed and I open Firefox it will freeze up as soon as I open an additional tab other than my home page tab. In order to close Firefox after it freezes I have to use my Windows Task Manager to end process. As soon as I uninstall Adobe Flash player and reboot and then open Firefox it works fine.

    Does it help if you disable the plugin-container process?

  • Why does firefox open up more then one page when I login

    After upgrading to Firefox 5, when I open Firefox it opens about 15 to 20 pages and I have to close the pages before it will let me continue. Why is this happening?

    But there aren't any symbols. It's just set to http://www.yahoo.com
    And every time I open Firefox, it opens with 3 Tabs, one of which IS Yahoo but the other 2 a regarding plug ins being successfully updated. I've even gone as far as to uninstall those plug ins and it still opens with 3. About ready to uninstall Firefox and stay with IE

  • Why does Firefox open multiple instances of .mht files?

    Running laptop with WIN 7, I have changed the default program associated with file type for .mht files from Windows IE to Firefox.
    Now, when I attempt to open a .mht file on my hard disc, Firefox then proceeds to open seemingly countless instances of the file. I stop Firefox after about 10-15 instances before I use up all my (4Gb) memory.

    I think Firefox requires an add-on to open MHT files intelligently.
    Two pop up in a search on the Add-ons site:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/tag/MHT
    Maybe that will help? Or if you have one of them, maybe try the other?
