Why does Firefox's first startup take so long?

Hello
I was hoping if someone could help diagnose and resolve a performance issue I am currently experiencing with my Firefox. On first initial load, it will take 3-4 minutes before the window actually appears.
I've done some research and tried the follwing methods but unfortunately with no success:
# Disabling add-ons - although I don't know how to remove old obsolete ones altogether.
# Creating a new profile
# Amending the shortcut to include "Prefetch:1"
Sebsequent start-ups are ok and I experience no problems - it is just the first initial start-up.
Any guidance and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

Not sure what that link is to as I've been waiting 15 minutes now for it to open and still only got a black screen.
My back up gets to just over 3/4 done and then seems to freeze or I am told iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Sounds like whatever is in that link might be useful, but it's taking as long to open as running a back up so I may give up on that. Is there something that can be added into this thread if there is a magical way of stopping them (sometimes I can click the x in the bar and stop it, sometimes I can't).

  • Why does secure empty the trash take so long to perform?

When I empty the 'secure trash' folder, it takes hours to perform what use to take seconds or minutes to do.

Try deleting less at one time.
Unless you're trying to get rid of malware/dodgy software, there's not really much point in using 'secure empty trash' if what you're worried about is someone recovering your deleted files. Experts can still recover stuff even after that.
The only way to get rid of your data securely is to overwrite the entire disk several times with zeros (Disk Utility has a function for this, and it will take a long time.).
And if its really confidential, put the disk in an incinerator or a blender , the only 100% surefire method.

  • Why does exporting a quicktime movie take so long?

I'm exporting an 88-minute-long HDV movie as a self-contained quicktime without recompressing. The media is all on one ESATA drive and the target disk is a second ESATA drive. It takes five hours and uses >150% of my CPU during the export. It seems to me like it shouldn't take nearly that long, nor should it use so much CPU since basically all it's doing is copying data from one disk to another, right? Any idea why it's taking so long and using so much CPU? Thanks.

No, wrong. It is creating a completely new GOP structure for your MPEG2 based edit.
    Ah.
This is one of the drawbacks of working/delivering in HDV ... With that in mind, is there any special reason you are creating an HDV self contained master?
I'm making it self contained so I can put the whole thing on my MBP's internal hard drive and show it to people without having to carry terabytes of media around. I'm staying in HDV because I started out working in Final Cut Express, which converts everything to AIC, and had very bad results: my media files grew by a factor of three, everything was ridiculously slow, and my machine crashed regularly, particularly during captures, which was unbelievably frustrating because that meant I had to babysit the machine throughout the entire capture process (and often through multiple iterations of the capture process interleaved with machine reboots). In fact, the only reason I started using FCP instead of FCE is so I wouldn't have to transcode.

  • Why does Illustrator CC 2014.1 take so long to launch?

I work on an iMac and use OS X Yosemite. Every time I launch Illustrator CC 2014.1 it takes 11 minutes to open.
Does anyone else have this issue?

I remember when AI used to take forever to launch. Now I run in 64-bit, and since AI updates it is reasonably faster at launch. Are you running your iMac in 64-bit? or 32?

  • Why does "Print..." take so long?

It has always seemed OS X has to work very hard (e.g., spinning beach ball) to bring up the print dialog. Granted, it gets better with repeated print commands as you might expect. But it is always a little slow, and REALLY slow if you haven't printed for a while.
(I assume most - if not all - people also experience this phenomenon.)
Why do you think this happens?
Thanks for any education you can give me.

    Hi, Charlie.
See "Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1: Print dialog slow to appear." In your case, the last paragraph therein may apply.
Earlier research I did on this problem, i.e. before Mac OS X 10.4.2 was released revealed the following:
If one performed an Upgrade install of Tiger, one may experience:
    - Slow appearance of the Print sheet when printing in applications.
    - Some apps may launch more slowly, e.g. in my case, Photoshop 7.x.
The issue is with the cupsd (CUPS daemon) configuration file.
The fix described in the hint "A possible fix for a slow Print dialog" on Mac OS X Hints solves both problems.
The slower Photoshop 7.x launch revealed itself with the following line in the system.log:
    May 8 16:43:52 PM-G4-D500 /Applications/Adobe Photoshop 7/Adobe Photoshop 7.0/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Photoshop 7.0: cupsd mach_msg error (ipc/rcv) timed out
The error that shows up in the /var/log/cups/error_log file when you attempt to use a Print dialog before implementing the fix is:
    W [10/May/2005:13:53:45 -0500] emptyReceivePort: mach_msg send returns: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
After implementing the fix, the Print sheet displays instantly and Photoshop launches as fast, if not faster, in Tiger as it did under Panther. The messages above no longer appear after the fix.
    Good luck!

  • Why does my signal drops and takes a long time to search and connect when I turn on or off my cellular data? And normal text messages are not getting delivered properly. It shows sent but later it will show try again, Is it just me?

I do not know what the problem is, but after the latest update it is really hard to send text messages. It is taking alot of time to send the messages, it is not the problem with the carrier because sending text messages with the same number in the same area is really easy on my normal nokia 1100. Please suggest me what I should check. Second problem I am facing is the carrier signal drops to nothing when I turn on the cellular data. It has to then search for the network and connect again the same happens when I turn the data off again. Please tell a solution. I do not think it is the problem with the hardware because the phone is hardly 2weeks old and everything was working properly with ios 6. It initaly had problem with the battery on updating to ios7 but that was rectified with the new update but again these are the new issues am facing.

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • Why does Firefox take so long to load beta images on some sites?

I upgraded to one of the latest versions of Firefox, and it's better in some ways. It loads much faster than previous versions, but when I try to look at certain websites - the Globe and Mail is one of them - I get messages like "waiting for beta images" and Firefox just sits there and I can't look at the site. Why does Firefox take so long to upload beta images? I don't have that problem with Internet Explorer.

I am also having this problem. When trying to reboot, I get an endless cycle of the BIOS screen, then "MACHINE ERROR", then back. Running the same dmesg command as snoxu results in a similar error message. I am forced to shutdown by holding the power button. Upon rebooting, I get an error message that all extensions have been turned off (using Gnome Shell). Then I have to logout and login.
Shutting down and then restarting works fine.

Why does Firefox always block any link I try to open going to a web page when I don't have pop up blocker on? First off they are not even pop ups....your crap blocks everything and don't save user names &/or passwords when you have it checked. Also in your tutorials about solving this issue says it has the word "OPTION" .......no, it never says option to allow you to bypass it and etc. Only thing is says is "ALLOW" . That would be nice , but the problem is it will not allow it from then on. It only allows it right then and then you have to refresh...after that to open again it blocks it again.....HOW STUPID?!!!!!
It always say that this is preventing this page from automatically redirecting to another page. THIS IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO...GO TO ANOTHER PAGE........I DON'T NEED YOUr BROWSERS PERMISSION TO DO THAT. THAT IS WHAT A *%#$&*(&*%$$%% BROWSER IS FOR TO GO TO OTHER PAGES......THEY ARE NOT POP UPS!!!!!
YOU STUPID BROWSER ACTUALLY BLOCKS EVERYTHING AND THAT SUX!!!
    HELP!!

Are you using "Clear history when Firefox closes"?
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
    *do not clear the Cookies
*do not clear the Site Preferences
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.
Let all cookies expire when you close Firefox.
    *Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Keep until: I close Firefox
You can choose to keep third-party cookies from visited sites if necessary.

  • Why does Firefox have to make it so difficult to get answers--I am not going to be able to check the website to see what anyone might reply to my question on crashing?

I have no way of checking to see if anyone answers this. Why does Firefox have to make it so difficult?
What does this means: DLL C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\MOZCRT19.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
Suddenly all my tabs closed. Then Windows told me I had a gazillion infections. Then a tiny strip appeared saying it was Firefox and these little blocks started to fill up the little strip as if it were downloading something--there was no way to cancel this so I cut the power. Now when I try to use the Firefox icon, I get the message above.
Am I supposed to remove the old Firefox stuff and start from scratch? I am stuck using Internet Explorer.
I went to the Firefox website and tried to download it again, but McAffee jumped in and said there is something wrong with Firefox and I should register with them that I am downloading Firefox (I do not have McAffee). Then I got a security warning saying Firefox is not safe.
I am completely at a loss as to what to do next, since I don't understand any of this mumbojumbo.

Here's the story on one of your infections, namely JS:Redirector-EH[Trj]: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Trojan%3aJS%2fRedirector.H
The main problem with malware is that it uses the installation to proliferate by contacting hostile servers to download more of the same rogue code.
Firefox doesn't have the option to "Run" a file. You can only "Save File" or "Cancel". If you downloaded it with IE8, then yes, you can run it, but that's not what I wanted you to do.
What you should do now is to disable System Restore. You can open System Properties by hitting the Windows logo key and Pause/Break key together. Then click the "System Restore" tab. Then checkmark the box which says "''Turn off System Restore on all drives''". Reboot to clear its contents. System Restore unfortunately makes a backup of all executables which includes viruses so that when you reboot without deleting them first, System Restore reinstates them again.
After you complete that step, run Avast and Malwarebytes again to make sure the system is clean.
Then go to the Windows Update site (link on your start menu) and install the missing patches which enabled your machine to become infected in the first place.
Once the system is clean, repeat step one to download Firefox again, but please do not run the file. If you don't see the option to "Save File", cancel the download, but it should be there. You can use this direct download link to download FF4.0.1 [http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-4.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US Download Firefox 4.0.1]
Run the file after you download it to the desktop.
