Why does Firefox try to open PDF with Acrobat 8 when I have Properties set to use Reader 9.1?

If I click a link to a PDF from Firefox 3.6.10 it tries to open it with Acrobat 8 and fails, while if I double-click in a folder it correctly opens with Reader 9.1
If I try to open with Acrobat 8 from folder it won't work either, but why doesn't Firefox use the default program?

Go to Tools|Options|Applications. The first 4 entries relate to Adobe. Make sure that the association is for your 9.1 version. If it's not, click the association that is showing. You will get a downward pointing triangle at the right. Click on it and see if 9.1 is listed. If so, select it. Do the same for the other Adobe items.
You might also want to check "Folder Options" in the Windows Control Panel. In the "File Types" tab you will find all of the file extensions and the programs they are associated with. Scroll down to the PDF extension and insure it's associated with an "Adobe Acrobat Document. If not, click on the <change> button and find adobe in the program list.
Just to let you know, Adobe Reader is now up to version 9.4. You can go to Adobe's website to download the latest.

  • Why does Messages still send my txt via SMS when I have the "send as SMS" option turned off?

Why does Messages still send my txt via SMS when I have the "send as SMS" option turned off?

I haven't missed any point, but you don't get it.
If people take "Send as SMS" being turned off as the iPhone shoiuld not be sending SMS messages without reading this text that is included below the option:
Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable. Carrier messaging rates may apply.
    They are idiots.
But you're saying you have this other piece of information that tells you that this option only applies to two iphones exchanging txt.  Where did you obtain such information?
    Copied from my previous post.
Under the Send as SMS option, the following is available:
Send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable. Carrier messaging rates may apply.
You should check available text below an option such as this so you know what it does.

  • Why does safari try to open my Norton File Guard protected file?

When I start up my Mac Powerbook (OSX 10.5.8), Norton File Guard reports that Safari (version 5.0.6) is trying to open one of my Norton-guarded files, which happens to be an InTouchWith data file with the extension .itw. (InTouchWith is an older Contact Management application from Prairie Group Software). Why would Safari try to open this file, and how do I find out what other un-guarded files Safari is 'secretly' trying to open every time i launch Safari?  This is very disconcerting, to say the least, from a security standpoint.  This Powerbook can't run any Mac system higher than 10.5.8, and can't run any newer Safari version, so upgrading to gain newer security features of Safari, is out of the question.  When I launch Firefox ver. 3.6.28, (the newest version that is compatible with my Mac), Firefox doesn't trigger these Norton FileGuard error messages.

    Get rid of Norton.
Norton Antivirus (made by Symantec) has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)

  • Why does Firefox 6 struggle and stutter with the new 4Od?

Why does Firefox 6 struggle with the new 4Od?
OK, so here’s my question. I have been using Firefox for years; it’s a wonderful piece of software and an excellent browser. Recently I’ve been having problems with plugin-container.exe. The general advice has been to make sure that Flash Player is up to date (10.3.183.7) and that Firefox is up to date (6.0.1). I still have problems, particularly on YouTube and the new 4Od site, so much so that I used about:config to disable “dom.ipc.plugins.enabled”, I set the value to false. Plugin-container.exe was, prior to this, hogging all the CPU it could get its grubby little mits on, this no longer happens but whilst watching 4Od Firefox eats my entire CPU and the rendered video stream is filled with stutter, almost like frame dropping. It’s fun to watch Firefox struggle, but its no fun trying to watch a program. In desperation I downloaded and installed Chrome. Watching 4Od my CPU usage dropped from 98-100% down to 82%. I don’t particularly want to use Chrome but I do increasingly use my browser to watch streaming video content. Incidentally, if I use Firefox to watch the BBC Iplayer I only burn 35% CPU using Firefox. Oh, and I’m XPSP3, up to date.
How do I solve this stuttering problem?
Is this a codec issue with-in Flash Player?
Does 4Od use some sort of unsupported codec?
I can’t be the only one out on this limb and I know the problem solvers like a good challenge. Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

You can use Themes or Personas to change the display of Firefox browser.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/themes/

  • FF 19 for Mac. changed preferences to open PDFs with Acrobat Reader. Now when I click on a pdf link, an about:blank FF window opens (pdf then opens)

The change in preferences opens the pdf appropriately with Acrobat Reader, as desired, but before it does, FF opens a brand new blank window (about:blank). How can that action be stopped?

Yes, I mean the eternal application.
Ctrl-click does open the dialog, but that does not cause new/blank FF window to show up.....however shift-click opens the new/blank window, then opens another FF window with a "New Tab" heading, then opens the pdf with Acrobat Reader.....
If open the dialog and select "open in new tab" (open in Acrobat Reader is not an option), a new tab is opened, and the the pdf come up in Reader (without opening a new FF window). In earlier FF, it just opened directly in Reader (or acrobat) without opening a new tab or window.
    Thanks

  • Why does Firefox 31 change all PDF icons and opening in browser, require a fix using REGEDIT to fix for ALL USERS on a computer?

The solution to use REGEDIT in the question linked below almost fixed my trouble with PDF files on over 30 computers, with several users on each computer:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1013642
But I needed to fix it for ALL users on a computer, without logging onto each account, on each computer. My fix was to logon as administrator and change the following system-global key instead:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.pdf
    Name: Default
    Type: Reg_SZ
    Data: FirefoxHtm
Changed the data from FirefoxHtm to AcroExch.Document.11
I use Adobe Reader XI on Win7 Pro, 64-bit machines.
The problem started when I ran a downloaded file to install the new version of Firefox on the computers.
Why would Firefox require me to use REGEDIT in this manner to fix the problem?

This only happens when you set Firefox as the default browser and Firefox thinks that there is currently no application the handles PDF files.

  • Why does Firefox try to launch Adobe and/or Quicktime when I close Firefox? What is it loading into those programs?

When I shut down Firefox, it tries to start Either Adobe Reader, Quicktime, or both. It has done this ever since the first time I installed an used version 4. The applications do not actually launch, as in a window opening, but they are then present as a process in the system, and I have to close them from the Task Manager. It usually launches just one, but, if it's trying to launch one, and I use Task Manager to close it, it then launches the other. If I hurry and stop that one, Firefox reports that it messed up, and wants me to keep using the Internet for its own purposes that have nothing to do with what I was using the Internet for. This never happened under previous versions of Firefox. Do I need to revert to a previous version? I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security, and it shows I have no malware or the like on my computer, which could cause this. So, why is Firefox trying to do things I did not ask it to, and then expecting me to let it phone home to tell about it when I stop it. By the way, out of good practice, I often close down my Internet connection before closing Firefox, (in case I do get something like a Key Logger loaded, to prevent it from sending its final report before the cache is cleared), but this also happens when I have not yet closed my Internet connection before closing Firefox, so I do not think that is the issue, nor should it be. Your question below about when it happens does not provide for the answer "Every time Firefox Closes", so I picked the closest such answer.

This can be caused by clearing the cookies via [[Clear Recent History]].<br />
    * Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" > [X] Clear history when Firefox closes > Settings
You can try to exclude the cookies to test that.<br />
You can let all cookies expire when you close Firefox to remove unwanted cookies and keep the ones with an allow exception.
    * Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Keep until": "I close Firefox"
If you use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the cookies when you close Firefox then Firefox also tries to clear the cookies from plugins like Flash and starts a plugin-container process for each plugin and possibly for each cookie (?) and that can add extra time if there are a lot of cookies to remove and also can cause an unresponsive script error to appear.

  • Why does firefox keep changing things up with new versions?

It really bothers me that Firefox keeps changing things, namely the user interface with new versions. They move buttons around like the back / forward, and refresh button. If I don't have the latest version I get prompted to download it each time I open my web browser. Now with this latest update I got a good inch and a half at the top of my screen that should be gray but is transparent and shows my desktop background. Also, I like to right click and 'open link in new' tab a lot, I thought it used to be 'open link in new window' first than 'open link in new tab' second. They switched them around now I'm opening new windows instead of tabs from clicking the second option by habit. Its not that big of a deal but why keep changing it up when I'm comfortable with what I know.

  • Why does Firefox 8.0 open so SLOW?

I just updated to Firefox 8.0. I had the same problem before updating from 7.0. It takes over 1 minute for firefox to open on my home computer which runs Windows 7. However, my office computer runs XP and opens Firefox 7.0 in less than 10 seconds. Home computer opened fast when firefox was first installed when purchased new 6 mo ago. Firefox was originally installed on both computer at approx. same time. Why does it open so SLOW? I've search several websites for solution, but most posts were several years old. I'm ready to go back to Internet Explorer. 60 seconds is a long time to hold your breathe.

    Hope this helps a bit

  • How can I open pdfs with Acrobat directly from Firefox (Android)?

I would like to open pdfs directly with the Acrobat reader app, without downloading it (& saving it in the downloads folder). When I open a pdf, FF offers me several apps or a download, but not the Acrobat Reader, also Acrobat it mentioned as the standard application for opening pdfs.

The file must be downloaded for Adobe reader to be able to display the file. There is no way to display any file without downloading it.

  • How do I change standard programs (f.i. opening PDF with acrobat instead of preview)

In the finder select the file and right click on the file and select "Get Info" from the drop down menu. In the files Info window that open, there will be several triangle with a title next to it (ie. General: , More Info: , Name & Extension: and then Open with: . If under the Open with title is just the next title "Preview", click the triangle to the left of Open with: so you see a drop down menu you can click on to see a list of application that can open that file. Select the program you want to use to open the file (if it's not in the list select "Other..." and locate the program in your Applications folder. Then click the "Change All.." button under the drop down menu in the "Open with:"

  • Safari Insists on opening PDFs with Acrobat

If I go to a PDF link in Safari, it insists on trying to open the with Adobe Acrobat, which isn't currently licensed for my computer. When this doesn't work it crashes Safari. How do I get it to default to preview? PDFs on my computer are defaulted to open with Preview already.

Unless you need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, move the app to the Trash.
Well, I do sometimes need Reader. And it works fine if I simply choose, outside Safari, to open a file in it rather than in Preview. Part of the problem may be that I've got two startup disks on my Mac and the other one (where I don't have this problem) has Adobe CS4 with Acrobat Pro installed and licensed. I can't license it on this startup because of Adobe's licensing limit.
Also, go to Safari/Preferences - General. Make sure Safari is set as your default browser.
Tried that, Carolyn. Seems to make no difference.
The exact message, btw, is "Before proceeding you must first launch Adobe Acrobat and accept the End User License Agreement.

    Hello Mandy.
I can't think of a scenario where Firefox would make itself the default browser against the user's consent. Still, go into Tools > Options > Advanced > General > System defaults and untick that small box at the bottom of the window that talks about Firefox asking you each time it starts.
Hopefully that will fix the issue.

  • Open PDF with acrobat reader not preview

    Hi everyone:
I have been creating cross platform projects for a while now.
I just noticed that opening PDF from director tend to open up in
"preview" not in Acrobat. Is there a way I can tell my Mac project
to open the PDFs in Acrobat, if Acrobat doesnt exist then open them
in "preview." On PC they open in Acrobat (I guess this is due to PC
not having anything that can read PDFs naively.)
By the way, I create the projects on PC, and then test them
    on the Mac.
    thank you,
    Rafael.

Is this how it is supposed to be on Mac? Maybe I am just
asking something that I outta know...(like PDFs only open on
    Preview on Macs?)
    Rafael.
