Why does Firefox use up so much memory? My Windows Task Manager shows it using 109 Meg just now asking this question. Thanks

Pretty simple: I want to know how I can keep Firefox from using so much memory when in use. 100-200 meg is common. Thank you

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
*[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.
* [[Install an older version of Firefox]]

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

Trying safe mode takes seconds. Unfortunatly if you are not willing to do even rudimentary troubleshooting there is not anything we can do to help you.

  • My Firefox continues to stall a lot and Window Task Manager shows that Firefox is using a lot of memory (600,000k +) What can I do to make this stop stalling?

I play Farmville or on Pogo and my computer keeps giving me the hour glass and when I look on my Windows Task Manager it shows that I am using over 600,000 k of memory. When it does that I can't do anything unless I just use the power button to shut the computer down or use the task manager to "End Process". I do not like to do either of these so I usually just sit and wait for it to fix itself then later it does it all over again.
Also when I was doing defrag on the file type tab it showed two Mozilla Firefox so I am wondering if this is the issue but I only see one in the control panel.

  • Firefox hangs after a few hours. The task manager shows it using 50% of the time, and I don't see where it's doing anything. What is going on?

It will not respond to any mouse clicks or key presses. I use the task manager to shut it down. When I restart, I select the option to restart Firefox with the same tabs and it does that and runs fine for a few hours and then it hangs again.

    iPhones are not user servicable.
Take the device to a competent repair person or buy a new one.

  • Why does firefox stop loading then when i close it and try to open it up again I keep getting this message:Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system

Firefox will just stop loading/ connecting to the internet. The gray circle will just continually move but it never turns green to load the pages. I know it's not my internet because my internet explorer works just fine while this is happening to firefox. So I close firefox and then try to re open it but I get the message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. So I wait a little bit then try and re open it and still get the same message. I then go into my windows task manager and try and end the firefox proccess but it won't end. So I restart my computer and firefox eventually starts acting up again.

For possible causes of this error, and how to troubleshoot it see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]].

  • Why does Safari eat up so much memory?

    Hi,
I've finally had it with Safari and have switched to Camino.  I'd like to know why Safari eats up so much memory.  Things will be going slow, I'll get the rainbow swirl and I'll open the activity monitor and see that Safari has two different process names going on, on of which is eating 2GB +.  Just to compare, I'll open the same windows in Camino and I'll get a maximum usage of 300 MB.
The issue only got worse after the last update.
    Thank you,
    steven

Hi, sorry I didn't reply sooner.  For some reason, this post doesn't come up when I look in "my discussions" at the top.
Currenly I have a 1TB HD with 700 GB used, I have 9 TB external HD (1TB for Time Machine, the rest for storage) that's only half full.  And yes, I use video editing software extensivly and Pages as well.  I'll often surf while writing to research and I have programs like Outlook running in the background.  The one thing which has become a problem is playing Flash (like streaming The Daily Show), which becomes choppy and slows down Safari to a crawl.  I thought it was my Internet connection but I have 10mps, super fast.
@ Johm, about page outs, here's the data
    Page Ins 7.05
    Page outs 57.3
    Swap Used 51.3
    VM size 183
I'm guessing I should purchase some memory based on these numbers.  Memory isn't as cheep in Japan as it is in the states, at least not for Mac.  Does anyone have a suggestion for a brand I should look out for or any stats that will help me decide which type to purchase or how much?
    Thank you much,
    Steven

  • Why does firefox become less userfriendly with each update? first there no tab saver addon anymore and now there is no way to place spaces between the buttons

there seems to be no possible way for any software developer to understand that whenever you release an update that changes the interface of the software it only annoys people
i am now searching for a usable downgrade and looking around for an alternative for firefox
thx for replacing userfriendlyness with that smooth and simple layout
bringing back tab saver would perhaps change my mind despite the fact that my google search box and webadress box is now as wide as my screen witch is kinda useless not to mention ugly as fuck
why instal a theme if there is always shit in front of it

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to restore some functionality that was lost with the arrival of the Australis style in Firefox 29.
    *Classic Theme Restorer: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/
You can check the settings of the CTR extension via its Options/Preferences button on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" page.

  • Why does Firefox 5 open up to 8 browser windows when opening?

I never had this problem with previous versions, and not even immediately upon upgrading to version 5, but now when I start Firefox, up to 8 separate browser windows open and I have to close each one individually. I am running Windows 7.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • I cannot close firefox without closing the process via the windows task manager.

The X in the top right corner, the 'Exit' command under 'File', nor right-click+close on the taskbar will close Firefox. I have to press ctrl+alt+del, and close the process manually.

Why does Firefox always ask for permission to use some obscure fonts?
    == This happened ==

Yeah the whole "blame the OS" thing is a red herring. What the hell is Firefox doing looking on my external drives in the first place? It asks permission to use a font on another drive, but what else is it looking at outside of the Applications folder where it should know enough to mind its own business?

  • While being idle online for a few minutes, why does Firefox start cyclically using 50% to 5% CPU resources, with a 10 to 1, hi to lo ratio

This behavior became apparent after the last couple of Firefox version updates. Current Firefox version is 21.0. My PC is an IBM ThinkCentre running @ 3.0 Ghz Intel CPU with 1.5 Gigs PC3200 DDR ram. With or without any other Windows apps open, whether I'm on line just idling on my home page (Google) or any other web page or entering / receiving data, several minutes into a session, the MS XP pro SP3 task manager shows Firefox cyclically using 50% (and more) CPU resources for 8-10 seconds then 1-5% CPU resources for 1-2 seconds. Closing & restarting Firefox, allows me a few minutes of speedy surfing. My ISP is AT&T 2nd tier DSL with a download thruput of 300 (+) MB (not Mb) / second (altho, most of the time I'm just viewing a web page or idling, without downloading or uploading any data).
What has changed? My PC & all of its software have remained the same with the exception of MS security updates, Adobe Reader updates, & Firefox updates (without adding any additional plug ins, add ons, etc., with each update).
What the...! For the past several minutes that I've been inputting data here, the task manager showed a jump of only 13% cpu usage (ever so briefly) by Firefox & only then when I switched between the task manager & Firefox. Intermittent anomalies are gonna be the death of me...
Well, this is an annoyance, albeit an intermittent one. Ah, I pine for the days when I heard about & believed in "seamless integration"...any thots that might help resolve this issue sure would be appreciated.
