Why does HDV ProRes422 import as 8-bit?

Just wondering...when checking the 'internal pixel format' in Setup/User Prefs, only 8-bit is highlighted and all others are ghosted (except floating point). My original footage is HDV (8-bit native) but I digitized it as ProRes422 via a Kona LHe card. According to the Kona folks, this is supposed to allow me to process the footage in a 10-bit workflow, which would be ideal for Color. My timeline settings seem to be in order, so why isn't Color seeing this as 10-bit material, after the sequence is sent from my from my FCP timeline? Thoughts? Anecdotes? Bueller?

You're right about the LHe handling full HD to ProRes conversion. We run a Quad with an LHe and a RAID50 SCSI setup and capture 1080i/50 via HD SDI to ProRes422 HQ (230 Mbps) without problems.
Our original Quad, and a 2nd recent purchase, have the G5 ATI X1900 cards (ex OWC) to replace the single Nvidia 4500 that with Color 1.0 was limited to 8 bit, although I think it's a bit faster than the G5 ATIs - with 8-bit or FP being the only really options we need, I think I'd have the 4500 back in both given the choice. But the ATIs are workable enough.

iPhoto only imports from the Camera roll.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Why does I pad import my pictures twice?

Why does the iPad import pictures twice?

In the Camera app, touch the HDR letters at the top to turn that feature off.
The HDR button is in the top center of the screen. Tap on it to turn it either on or off. HDR stands for high dynamic range, and it takes three pictures in a rapid succession with different exposures. It then combines the three for the perfect picture. Keep in mind a few things if you are using HDR. You cannot take pictures in a quick, rapid succession, because of the intense image processing to create the HDR picture. Additionally, HDR photos take up more room on the device by default, because in Settings under the Photos & Camera settings, Keep Normal Photo is turned on.

  • Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

It's difficult to be sure without doing some network packet sniffing, but if it were another app syncing, it would be an awful coincidence, since it seems to happen only while I'm in Reminders.app -- as soon as I click the home button and go back to the home screen, it stops; when I launch Reminders again, it starts again.
Moreover, it happens when I am not in the house, which rules out iTunes syncing.
Note that it's not the syncing spinner (i.e. two arrows chasing each other in a circle) -- it's the data access spinner (like the wait spinner in many apps and the apple.com search box).

  • Why does iPhoto now import videos?

I'm shooting a video and production stills with my DSLR. Why does iPhoto '11 import the videos? They just take up disk space. I can't do anything with them in iPhoto. Can I tell iPhoto to import the stills only?

iPhoto has always had the ability to import certain formats of video.  Also, iPhoto video can be seen in iMovie for editting.  - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2196.

  • Why does iPhoto 6 imports all photos in two folders: modified and original

I upgraded from iPhoto 5 to 6. Now I have all my photos in the order and with the name I have given to the rolls. Great!
However, everytime I import new photos from my compact flash card iPhoto automatically modifies the photos by reducing the size and adjusting the orientation. These photos are on average 25-50% of the original size and are saved under the folder: pictures /iPhoto library /modified.
At the same time iPhoto saves the original photos to the folder: pictures/iPhoto library / originals.
The problem is that having more then 6GB of photos this set-up starts to fill my harddisk (presently an additional 2 GB).
How can I change or cancel this feature. Does anybody have an idea or similiar expierence.

How can I change or cancel this feature
    You can't.
Does anybody have an idea or similiar expierence.
    Everybody does.
iPhoto is not just an image viewer, but is a Database with a built-in image viewer, version control and lightweight editing.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way. This also includes photos that have been auto-rotated by your camera.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So each element is there for a reason and there is no actual duplication.
The notion of version control (the ability to revert to an Original) is central to the philosophy of the application, and if you don't want the feature, then the application may not be for you. There are many image viewers available.

  • Why Does iMovie Distort Imported Graphic Text?

In an effort to get around the fact that iMovie's titles don't display the same way after rendering the same way they do when previewing them, I tried to make my own titles as clips. I took the same colored gradient background still clip that I'm using in iMovie, imported it into several graphics apps (Intaglio, OmniGraffle Pro, Photoshop Elements). Then I added the text that I wanted to use as titles for opening and closing credits, and exported the images for use in iMovie, Then I figured I'd just position them in the timeline in sequence, insert crossfade transitions between them, and that would be that.
But it doesn't work. No matter how high a resolution I use in the imported title clips, iMovie renders them all horribly. The text edges are jagged and it looks like garbage. I've tried JPEG, PNG, JP2, TIF, PDF...nothing seems to work. Even the high resolution images exported from Photoshop look like garbage.
Is there any way to get graphic image text to display properly in iMovie...that is, without using iMovie's own built-in titles, which don't display properly and can't be formatted to look good either.
    Thanks!

    QuickTimeKirk:
Thanks for your reply. Here's some additional info.
Actually, I thought that I had correctly sized the images, but I admit I'm way out of my depth here. I'm an audio guy (using Logic Pro 7.2.3), and fairly adept in that domain. I know very little about video.
I measured the pixel size of the video screen in iMovie, and made an image exactly that size. When that didn't work, I started making images of progressively larger size, including some humongous images in Photoshop. I figured that if I gave iMovie some very high resolution still images, then when iMovie reduces them they shouldn't LOSE resolution. At least, that's the way digital graphics usually work. I guess video is different...
I tried using QuickTime Pro as a workaround. I stuck all the title images in a folder, numbered them sequentially, selected *Open Image Sequence...* under the QuickTime File menu, chose 5 seconds per frame (for 5 JPEG images), and QuickTime opened them as a QuickTime movie. Sure enough, the text displayed with crystal clear, sharp edges in the QuickTime Player. (I used 29.97 fps, the same frame rate I'm using in iMovie.) So, I saved it as a self-contained .mov file, and then I dragged it into iMovie. It still looks like garbage.
I noticed that I have iMovie HD v6.0.3 on my MacBook Pro, so I tried all of the above in that version of the app. All of the still images still look terrible. I'm used *iMovie's Edit:Create Still Frame* command to make the stills, but it's no good. The QuickTime .mov file looks a little better when I import it into iMovie HD v6.0.3 and play it there (the edges are somewhat less jagged, at least), but it's still not anywhere near as crisp and clear as it looks in QuickTime.
If QuickTime can display the text properly and turn it into a movie, why can't iMovie play that movie properly at the same frame rate? Sorry to afflict you with my video newbie ignorance, but I don't get it. This is going to be a problem going forward, because the movie I'm trying to make is full of still images. Basically, it's an audio program (a lecture), with a bunch of visual aids. It seems like iMovie should be able to handle it, but I've got to solve this text displaying problem.
Can you tell me how to "size my image format to match my iMovie Project dimensions"? I ought to be able to do that easily with the graphics apps I have, but how do I determine what those dimensions are?
    Meantime, I'll keep trying stuff.
    Thanks again!

  • Why does dragging an imported video into a project reduce the file size by half?

I used a Canon Vixia HV40 to import 1 hour of HD video filmed using 24F and cina mode.  My import and project properties were as follows:widescreen (16x9, 24F, cinema, import size = full, original size.
The specifications for the imported file are as follows/:
    Size: 22.12GB
    Dimensons: 1920 x 1080
Codec: Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM
    Color Profile: HD(1-1-1)
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total Bit Rate: 47,113
When I drag the imported file into a new project, the resulting .mov file has the following specifications:
Size: 9.67GB (approx half the size)
    Dimensions 1920 x 1080 (same)
    Codec: H.264, AAC (different)
    Color Profile: HS(1-1-1) (same)
    Audio Channels: 2 (same)
Total Bit Rate: 20,607 (approx half)
What causes the file size reduction and bit rate reduction?  Is it a result of the different codec?  Is there any corresponding loss of video quality that results from the conversion?
Thanks for your answers in advance.

Thanks a lot for your quick and detailed response!
Maximum image quality and file size are not the same thing, for a start.
Yes, but with JPG's they tend to be correlated, aren't they?
When you view a photo in iPhoto it's a composite of the original and the decisions recorded, and applied live as you view.
Oh, I always thought iPhoto makes a copy of the orginial and modfies that ...
If you want to use that photo for something then you have to export it. This make a new file with your photo in it. When you export you have a lot of options - including ones that will make the filesize bigger than the original.  This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Ah, that is cool. That solves my problem.
If you use drag and drop from the iPhoto Window that's a form of exporting too -but you have no options there. You get the iPhoto Preview. That's a 'handy-good-enough-for-most-things version of the shot. If you want  more options use the export command.
That's what I tripped over. (I used the email feature from within iPhoto for a quick sharing ...)
    Thanks, G.

  • Why does iPhoto only import digital photo files at one-half or less of the original jpg file size?

My 24" 2008 iMac, running 10.5.8 and iPhoto '08 (300 GB harddrive, 67 GB avail, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MH sdram), only imports my digital photo images directly from the camera at about 1/2 or less of the original file size.  I thought it might be my 12.2 mgp. Samsung camera, until I just a 14 mpg. Lumix, and its doing the same thing.  A 5 mg. images imports at around 2.4 mgs...  a 14 mg image imports under 6...    Its always done this, but until I bought the new camera, I assumed it was my peripheral issue.

  • Help: Why does hdv turning 4:3 using h264

Help, every time I compress my hdv footage using quicktime conversion H264 even though the size I choose says 16:9 it comes out at 4:3. what am I doing wrong, I know HDV is still really 4:# but what should my settings be if I want h264 compression and a 16:9 look. thanks in advance, i am using final cut 7

HDV is anamorphic. (1440x1080). This needs stretching to be seen as the correct aspect ratio.
If you choose the image size as either 1920x1080 .. or 1280x720, you should get what you want.
(I assume you are choosing "Export Using Quicktime Conversion".. then chosing Quicktime Movie with H264 compression? Then clicking on "size" in the video options?
Some of those size options say 16:9, which they are.. but are also anamorphic, which can get confusing. Is that where the problem is?)

  • Why does my DV import look so bad in Imovie?

I recently shot a short how to video with multiple cameras. I used a nikon DSLR and a Sony HDV camcorder. The files from the Nikon were shot in 720p and look crisp and clear in Imovie. The footage from HDV was shot in the DV format, I am aware that this will not match the quality of the Nikon but it looks really poor jagged and blury in Imovie yet looks clear in the cameras lcd screen. Why is this and how can i fix this problem? Should i just edit this project in Final Cut?

Should i just edit this project in Final Cut?
    That's one way, but expensive.
There is a reduction in quality of the image between iMovie 06 and iMovie 08 through 11.
The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 08-11 (for faster editing) and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.
Final Cut Express and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 will give full quality but are more complicated to use.
In my opinion, iMovie 06 with iDVD 08 -11 is the way to go.

  • Why does iPad photo import change image appearance?

I've been editing some very colourful raw images in Adobe Lightroom. They look amazing on my retina macbook pro screen, so I wanted to save them to an iPad. I exported them as JPEG files and tried to transfer them both via wifi (photo transfer app) and an SD card using the camera connection kit.
When I went to import on the iPad, the thumbnails of the images look right, nice and vibrant, full of colour. Then once it has imported they suddenly become quite desaturated with dull colours.
Does the iPad have some sort of auto correction process when importing to the photos app? If so can I turn it off?
Or what sort of image colour settings do I need to change on my mac to ensure they display correctly on iPad?

guess it would be helpful if you can upload the photo somewhere and include a link here for others to download and inspect it.
