Why does iMovie work differently on my iMAC to my MACBOOK PRO

This is an update really to an earlier problem.  I've purchased a new iMAC only last week.  I'm running LION and iMovie 9.0.4 (1634) and iPhoto 9.1.5 (615).
This exact same software is running on my Mac Book Pro.
When I use iMovie on the iMAC and try and import pictures from iPhoto I see the photos appears in the timeline but when played only the last frame of the vidoe is played - instead of the photo.
I imported the exact same video and still images to the MacBook Pro and the software worked correctly.
All the preferences are the same in both softwares.
I've tried looking for ways to solve the problem online and see I'm not the only one to experiance the problem.  However they only suggets work-arounds and unfortunately this has not worked as well.
Could anyone please suggest something to try and help?

I recommend you to run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 It's possible that something is damaged, and Apple Hardware Test will help you finding it. Make sure you tick the option to run an extended test, and connect your Mac to the charger.
If your Mac came with DVDs, you have to insert the Mac OS X DVD to run Apple Hardware Test. As you haven't got the SuperDrive, you will have to buy an external optical drive

  • Exporting imovie project files from an imac to a macbook pro

I have imovie files on my imac and want to move a project files to my macbook pro and edit while traveling.  How do I simply send or share files between the two computers with imovie?

The key is to make sure the laptop is connected with a firewire cable to the other computer. It will appear on the desktop of the iMac as if it were an external harddrive. If you can see the Macbook Pro's hard drive on the desktop, you will be able to also see it within iMovie. If you don't see the Macbook Pro's hard drive in iMovie double check to make sure you have turned on 'Group Events by Disk' button in the Event browser. That's the little square button with a cartoon hard drive icon in it that sits in the upper right hand corner of the Event Library.
Once you are able to see the Macbook pro hard drive in the Event Library, drag the events onto that Hard drive icon. Same will be true for the Project Library, drag the projects onto the Macbook Pro hard drive there too.
When everything is copied, shutdown both the iMac and the laptop (you may need to hold down the power key on the laptop until it shuts off). Disconnect both macs, and startup the laptop, open iMovie. It should spend a little time 'discovering' all the new projects that have been copied to it and the Events and Project Libraries will show all the new video clips you copied.

  • Why does it take over 30minutes for my brand new MacBook Pro to sign me in?

I purchased a macbook pro 2 days ago. I am not familiar with mac's, but the first day it worked fine, but after i shut it down and attempted to start it up again it takes forever. The computer starts up and i enter in my password, but then the screensaver screen just stays on and doesn't actually log me in until about 45minutes later. When it does actually log me into the main screen with the deck, it freezes up if i click on anything. This is a brand new computer, why is this happening?!

This is very unusual. A normally operating Macbook Pro should have you signed in and running in well under 60 seconds from cold boot.
Most likely is that the software installation on you machine has been corrupted. It's not possible to efficiently work through all the possible problems over the forum. The root causes can range from a bad preference file up to a corrupted file system. Because your are a very new user and the problems are so severe, my approach to your situation would be to completely erase your drive and reinstall OSX and your applications from scratch. That way you eliminate nearly all variables.
A more conservative approach would be to fix permissions on the drive and/or repair the drive using disk utility (after booting from the OSX install disc) That MAY fix things, but if things are this bad, AND you are new on the machine and presumably don't have much work saved on it anyway, I'd just start anew.
This is very unusual for a Mac. Typical reliability on my Mac's lets me keep some up and running without reboot for 6 months. Yours is definitely in a bad state.

  • Why does my 27 inch LED cinema display freeze my Macbook Pro when connecting?

    Hi,
I've had a 27 inch cinema display for about 2 years now and love it.
However, a good 50-70% of the time whenever I attach my MacBook Pro, currently 15 inch late 2011, rather than waking up the MBP, it just freezes the computer.  The same thing used to happen with my 13 inch MBP.
    Any ideas why that is?
    thanks,
    TT

I finally decided to just take my MBP down to the Apple store and see what would happen if I connected it to one of their new ACDs.  At 1st, the guy at the Genius Bar told me that my MBP only supported 1280x800 as a maximum resolution.  I told him that was for my MBP screen, and not an external monitor.  Finally I convinced him to let me connect my MBP to one of their monitors.  Low and behold, looking at the Display settings pane I saw some addtional resolutions, including 2560x1600!
So, now I have confirmed that my MBP can drive an external monitor to a resolution of 2560x1600, using just the single mini displayport connection.  I just have to figure out what's wrong with my ACD.  Suspecting that my older ACD might not support this higher resolution, I did finally discover that my model only supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1600.
    Sorry for all the confusion...

  • TS2972 Home Sharing does not work for my iphone 4S or my MacBook Pro and my appleTV... why?

I have everything logged in properly.  And I've started and restarted each device...  but still no home sharing.  In fact, the Apple TV icon doesn't even show up on my iPhone any more.  Help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

You've done the obvious things.  Have you restarted your router?

  • Why does it take so long to install updates for MacBook Pro?

My Dell Desktop never took so long to install system updates or updates to my iPod. I thought since this is a Mac, that updating my iPod would be fairly quick...12 hours is unacceptable.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

153.8 MB on disk (153,825,280 bytes). No other wi-fi devices, but it's done now...finally.  Also, I accidentally downloaded updates for iMac so that probably didn't help my cause...oops.   When I get my own place I will have a broadband connection or whatever is the fastest.  We can't get it out where I live right now.  Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

  • Why does installing Flash Drive fail every time on my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.8)?

For many months now, I have not been able to update my Flash Drive. I finally tried to uninstall it. I followed the uninstall guidelines on this site. I still cannot install Flash Drive. The same failed message report pops up that popped up when I would try to update Flash Drive. It says it has failed and asks if I'd like to "Relaunch" or "Report to Apple."
I have a MacBook Pro with an OS X 10.5.8 operating system, and it is up to date.

    Hi kelsey,
As Kaewngam indicates, Flash Player is no longer supported on OS X 10.5.8.  You can download 10.3 from the Archived Flash Player versions page, which was the last supported version for 10.5.8, however, most sites require a newer version of Flash Player to view content.  You may be able to upgrade to OS X 10.6 if your system qualifies. See here for system requirements, System requirements for OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6 The 10.6 CD should be available on the Apple store ($19.99) . You can Google 'upgrading OS X 10.5.8 to 10.6' and it'll return loads of information.

  • Why does my music keep pausing and playing on my macbook Pro every time i put my headphones in?

Everytime i plug my headphones in my music starts playing and pausing, and i don't press the buttons on the headphones or the on mac.

Your  topic states Macbook Pro yet your system profile confirms you have a Mac Pro which is a desktop computer.  Which one are you having issues with?
Which os version are you using?
Which app is playing your music?

  • Why does inserting a disk (dvd or cd) cause my MacBook Pro to reboot?

My MacBook Pro has developed a serious problem. Every time I insert a disk the screen goes black and computer reboots itself. And if I don't get the disk ejected immediately it will reboot again. Doesn't matter if it's a commercially purchased disk or blank media the computer will reboot.
I've searched the forums and haven't seen this topic pop up anywhere.
This means that I can no longer put my system disks in the drive.

I plan on having a talk with an Apple rep on Monday about a replacement as the computer is only two months old and should no be acting like this.

Have you tried the standard mac glitch fixes: permissions repair, Zap the PRAM, and SWC reset?

  • Why does iMovie for iPad shorten the background song length after adding a photo?

Why does iMovie for iPad shorten the background song length after adding a photo?
I created a project a few months ago, and iMovie worked as it always had. I would create a project, add a background song, then add photos to fill up the song.
When I created a project today, I added the background song (4m9s), then added a single photo, and the background song length was shortened to 6 seconds. I have never seen the app work this way. I know I can extend the photo to the length of the background song, but it used to be so much easier to add photos and sync them with the music as I desi
    I'm using iPad2 with iMovie v1.4.1.
    Thoughts?

When I've added photos to a project they are added to a default time to appear. Honestly I've never looked at the time but 6 seconds sounds close. I'm guessing that since you added the photo after you add the music that its thinking you want the two to match in time length so it tunicates the music. Try adding the photo first then add the music. Good luck!

  • Combobox in array--why does it work this way?

I have attached a snippet of a subVI I'm using to initialize the items and set the values of comboboxes in an array. I modified it slightly so the array being referenced is on this block diagram, not a top level diagram. It took me a while to come to this solution; before I had the combobox part in a for loop and was trying to loop through each array element, get a reference to that element, and set the strings[] and value properties but it was acting all wacky. Then I changed it to the way below and it automatically populates all the comboboxes with the correct values, and then sets their values each to be different (which is what I want!) My question is, why does it work this way? I understand all elements in an array need to be the same (although I did find a work around here.), but the part about setting the values to each be different I was trying to do manually with a property node and a value property, when I realized the combobox just handles it all itself. Is this just a feature of a combobox in an array I need to note for future reference?
edit: I noticed the testers array reference label changed, so hopefully it's still referencing the same control. You may need to relink it.

You cannot get a reference to an individual element in an array control.  The ArrayElem reference will always refer to the same control regardless of what array index is visible.  This isn't specific to a combo-box, every array works like this.
I have not tested it lately but as of the time of this Nugget I found that it will point to the top left visable array element.
The ArrayElem property always returns the same reference no matter which element of the array is in the top-left corner, as demonstrated by the code below (screenshot instead of snippet to avoid mangled references and property nodes).
Yes that is true but the value returned when using a property node >>> value will return the top left displayed value. In the code included in that Nugget, I set the size of the control such that it only shows a single element then by manipulating the index control I can raed each element in the array.
At least that is how it behaved back in the day of that nugget.
Yes, my wife left me home alone with a case of beer and LV to find that tidbit. I suspect that feature will one day disapear without anyone noticing.

  • Why does iMovie stretch my images upon importing?

I've got some footage that I'm trying to import, but iMovie stretches out the video horizontally. I shot the footage using my Panasonic Widescreen mode, but why does iMovie take that footage and stretch it out further? Anyone have any thoughts?

If AppleMan1958's suggestion does not resolve your problem, and if iMovie is the ONLY app that is giving problems, your iMovie preferences file may be corrupted.
To check this out, quit all applications. Then throw away your iMovie Preferences file (com.apple.iMovie8.plist) from your Home (user) / Library / Preferences folder.
A new preferences folder will be generated when you restart iMovie to test whether iMovie imports properly now, but you will need to reset any preference settings you want different from the default values.

Does iMovie work with Mac OS X 10.6.8

    Me too! I have Macbook Pro 4, 1 with Mac OS X10.6.8 and I have IMOVIE 09 - 806 (version 821)
I can't seem to import any films into it - they don't show up as events.
Information online about suitability of 09 to Mac OS X 10.6.8 is confusing
    Any advice?
