Why does InDesign / CS3 do this?

When exporting an InDesign file to pdf, we frequently end up with the pdf having a different name than the original ID file.
We thought that maybe the ID file is retaining an old pdf name because we may have opened an old file, done a save as and made a new file.
Is this the case, and if so, why is it happening?
And ... how do we make the pdf retain the name of the InDesign file without making an .inx file and ending up with duplicates or retyping the file name every time?

Golly Gee! It is so frustrating when graphics software makes you pay attention to what you are doing.
Actually, InDesign does not stick with the last name of the file. It sticks with the
b name of the last exported pdf.
This is the benefit that Buko takes advantage of.
However, if you understand how InDesign retains the name of an exported pdf, you can avoid the problem of the "wrong" name in the pdf file.
The name of an exported pdf does come from the name of the file.
If you work on a file, and then save your work, and
b then make the pdf,
you will notice that InDesign is asking you to save your work again when you go to close the file.
The "changes" that InDesign is asking you to save is the name of the pdf and its settings.
Now, if you don't save the changes to the file after you export, InDesign will retain the default state of the name for the pdf. That default state is the ability to pick up the name of the file.
This means that you could do the following:
Work on file xxx.indd. Save your work.
Export file. The default xxx.pdf will appear.
Close file xxx.indd.
b Don't save your work.
Open file xxx.indd.
Save as yyy.indd.
Work on file yyy.indd. Save your work.
Export file. The default yyy.pdf will appear.
Close file yyy.indd.
b Don't save your work.
Open file yyy.indd.
Save as zzz.indd. (and so on)
The bottom line is that the export as pdf will pickup the name of the file as long as
b no saves were done after an export with any name.

Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start? Not every time, but often. It's very frustrating to have to re-enter all my prefs. Every once in a while I start up InDesign CS6 and the new document dialog shows page sizes in po (I always use inches) and the prefs all seem to revert to default.

Do you have a Windows PC and when shutting down, is Indesign still open? If so, this can result in a damaged preferences when still writing while Indesign is being terminated by the system.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

Open System Preferences > Netwwork then click Advanced then select the Wi-Fi tab.
Under Preferred Networks, if you see more than one network name listed, click and drag yours to the top then click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari.

Are you sure you have the right pin for your other friend? Try deleting the contact and re-adding them. Also, BBM has to be approved in the countries of both parties.

Why does InDesign create widows when you split a paragraph?

Take a look at the two screen grabs. In this first one the price £48.25 fits at the end of the fourth line.
But I want to split the paragraph at that point. Look what happens when I do:
Why does it do that? As you see from the first example, the type will fit happily on the line above with the same hyphenation and justification settings. Why should splitting the paragraph make a difference?
This feature enrages every production journalist on my UK national newspaper every working day of our lives. We don't like to put minus tracking on text and the only other way I know to counteract this effect is to reduce the word space values in the justification settings for the affected paragraph (we're working in Single Line Composer, by the way – Paragraph Composer makes it even worse). Sometimes even that doesn't work without everything looking too squished. If we can't edit the text to solve the issue (and why should we if we're otherwise happy with it?) then we have to construct a fake new paragraph using fixed spaces for the indent and baseline shift to create the 1pt space we insert between pars.
The font in this example is Corporate E Bold, in case that has any bearing.
Is there any other way round this, some mystical unknown setting that turns it off? If not, was it ever fixed in later versions of InDesign? My company uses CS3 and is not likely to update it for many years.

Because it uses paragraph composing to adjust for the best possible spacing within a line calculated on other lines here is how it works there are two types
Adobe Single Line Composer
and
Adobe Paragraph Composer
Paragraph composer is the default - and here's the rules on how both work:
Adobe Single-Line Composer.
Some programs use single-line composition to flow text. It goes line by line through a paragraph and sets each line as well as possible using the hyphenation & justification settings. When you modify the spacing of one line then the lines above and below that are not taken into consideration. If you adjust the space within a line it can cause poor spacing on the next line, which as they say in the business - tough luck.
When you use Adobe Single-Line Composer, the following rules apply:
Adjusting word spacing is preferred over hyphenation.
Hyphenation is preferred over glyph spacing.
If spacing must be adjusted, removing a space is preferred over adding a space.
Adobe Paragraph Composer
Adobe Paragraph Composer (which was called the Multi-Line Composer in previous versions) is turned on by default. It takes a broader approach to composition by taking the entire paragraph compoistion in one go. If you have a poorly spaced line it can be fixed by adjusting the spacing in the previous lines, so that the Paragraph Composer reflows the previous line.
The Paragraph Composer is has the following rules:
The evenness of letter spacing and word spacing is the given the highest priority. The possible breakpoints is determined by how much they cause word and letter spacing to vary from the desired settings.
Uneven spacing is preferred to hyphenation. A breakpoint that does not need a hyphenation is preferred over one that does.
All possible breakpoints are ranked, and good breakpoints are preferred over bad ones.
The paragraph composer is more sophisticated than the single-line option, offering generally better overall spacing because it sacrifices optimal spacing a bit on one line to prevent really bad spacing on another, something the single-line method does not do.
There is one frustration in dealing with the paragraph composer: When you try to edit text or play with tracking to get rid of an orphan or widow, the paragraph composer keeps adjusting the text across several lines, often counteracting your nips and tucks. The single-line composer doesn’t do that.

Does InDesign CS3 work on Mac OS X Lion?

I have installed the Adobe CS3 Design Premium (from original package discs) on my iMac but I am unable to open the applications (with an exception of PS) and get "the application has unexpectedly quit" notification. I was able to use all applications with no problem in my old mac laptop a few years ago. Does anyone know whether this is a compatibility issue with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 and if Adobe offers any solutions? The Customer Service says this is a technical issue (so they cannot help) and suggests that I seek help here but I had no luck so far. I already confirmed on another forum that this is not an installation issue and was suggested to seek help in program-specific forums. Thanks!

You won't get any kind of official statement that CS3 works on Lion, but Rick says he has it running, so there is potential. The problem you face is there was no testing or program modification for CS3 in order to run on Lion, so you're on your own (with any help you might find here from someone who is successfully doing what you want to do). Your problems are most likely due to some other software you also have installed.
As to why Windows has better OS backward compatibility than Mac, that's a difference in corporate philosophy -- Microsoft has a larger enterprise-scale customer base and they want programs to continue to run, and they're more likely to vote with their wallets.

Why does Indesign change the print driver?

When I go into the print dialog and click on "setup" to go to the Minolta Bizhub C450 print driver, I find that the items that I have changed (like collate, double sided, grayscale, the list goes on) have been changed back to the original setting. When I print from Acrobat, I can change the print setting and they stay. Example: If I want to print a file thats two sided, I hit <control P>, <settings> and enter the printer driver. I tell it that I want to two sided and I want "Right Binding". Exit the printer driver, go back to Indesign print screen and hit print. The file has printed two sided but the binding position has defaulted back to auto, not the "Right Binding" that I had asked for.
I have the new version 6.0.4 but it seems like my problems have started after this new version. Does anybody else have this problem?

So why dont you just make up some presets because after making those setting whenever you go back it will change so after sending for the firrst time dont set again just ctrl p and enter it will still remember or use preset it

Why does Bridge CS3 just cease to work?

As of today, I started having trouble with Bridge CS3. Out of the blue, Bridge just cannot be launched anymore. I have 10.6.2 running and it all worked well, I changed nothing and just like that, whenever I try to start the application - nothing. Just an error notification that asks me whether I want to report the crash or ignore it. The crazy thing is that everything else works just fine, only Bridge just doesn't wanna play with me.
I uninstalled the whole CS3 Design Standard, did a reboot, installed the whole package again - without any change. Bridge just keeps crashing on startup.
Does anyone else have this kinda problem? What could I do/try?

If you already have to recache the files here is a workaround to have a
fresh start (but not guaranteed to work since it does in a new user it might
also mean corruption in your current user account).
First of all start disk utility for apple and check and repair permissions
if you already have not done so. ( you should do this anyway or use a
maintenance application like Cocktail to automate this on a daily base).
Quit Bridge and in your default user (the one with the problems) go to the
user library and manual delete the Bridge2.plist file from the preference
folder to the trash.
In the same library go to Caches-Adobe-Bridge CS3 and inhere grab both files
and drag them to the trash (or for back up to a folder outside the library).
Both plist and cache file will renew it self after you restarted Bridge.
Also hold down option key while restarting Bridge after having deleted the
mentioned files and choose reset preferences.
Set Bridge prefs and interface to your own wishes and try again.
Should I try copying any files from one user's library to mine? Or is a
complete reinstall (witch I already tried as a first guess) the only solution?

I have just managed to resolve a duplex problem (CS4 not allowing duplex printing)
The same solution may help you.
On the indd print screen second selection setup there is a box that has 'A4' in it. This appears to be a default setting giving indd printer control.
I have changed that to Defined by Printer then I have saved that setting as a preset. I have done this for a A4 page (portrait) and for my A5 booklet Landscape). I select my preset as appropriate to the occasion before I print.
My understanding is by doing this CS4 surrenders and gives the printer control of printing.
It may be that in your case it indd will stop trying to control your printer (resetting it)

Why does 3Dmark05 give me this error?

This is a version I got off Limewire and its not full retail. Its only a demo. Got this error:

I have the latest drivers off the Nvidia website. What gives? Never used 3d05 before, but I was just testing my new ASUS hybrid card with various benchmarks to make sure things seem to be running right. I do get a posted score in 3dmark05, even though it kicks me out and zaps my screen temporarily to 800X600. 3dmark05, after clicking the ok buttun after the error message posts my score 3,106 which seems about right seeing that I have a slower system.
So far I have only benched this card, havent played any games for more then ten minutes. graphics seem better.Im not seeing the improvements in Far Cry that I though I would get from a 6800GT on full settings. I know this is a DDR128, but I just though things would be a smoother. Clarity is much better then the 9800pro and this card runs suppringly cool that 6600GT I tested was dangerously hot and I didnt want anything that hot in my case.
I dont think there is anything wrong with the card. I tested a 6600GT the other week and the this 6800GT hybrid did get me from 43K to 46K on Aquamark3. My 9800pro was at 41K with a slight overclock.....maybe I try some Farcrytests to see if that shows anything...
BTW I just was going to tell you have the latest drivers and was going to post the version, because after I got the card up and running I downloaded the latest from Nvidia. Why does my Display Adapter when I click on properties say "7/9/2004" version "6.2.1.1"?....Now when I ran the driver update, it said it was updating the drivers and the drivers name they were version 9/13/05?

I tried it with another version of 3Dmark05 and got the same error. I also noticed it does it during the CPU test where it tries to make the CPU think its a GPU. I found this:

I also checked around the net. Seems like there are two reasons for this "lost" error. A resident program pissing 3dmark05 or a voltage issue....I havent had any problems with my system and only have then with 3dmark05. This is with a new version of 3dmark05 and newest drivers installed after Driver Cleaner. SO I still dont know whats up....Again it only does it durring the CPU test for 3Dmark05 and in particular always errors out right when the monster is emerging from the water During the zepplin test.

In my previous post I noted that I was only using the ASUS drivers dated 4/05. Well I went back and used Driver Cleaner then tested. The scores were about the same, but gameplay and visuals were much smoother as I would expect from a card like this. I though that was odd given I had pretty much the same scores(meaning Aquamark stayed the same and 3dmark went up about 300 points). I then went back to Nvidias site and got the newest drivers and they loaded right this time
Aquamark: increased 1,000 overal to a solid 47,000-47,500 (I was getting 41K with 9800pro,XTbios OC)
3dmark03: 9608 (from 9137)
3dmark05: same score no changes (as noted above still errors out at CPU test)
Thanks for the input I am VERY happy to be running solid 47000-47500 Aquamarks where as before I was runnign 45500-46000 with driver issues. I not as familiar with 3dmark scores and how the differences pan out when playing games. But you mentioned that My scored seemed low. Is this 47,500 more like what you thought? Also remember the card that I have is a 16,6 6800 GT but has 1ddr128. In this review this guy only gets for 3Dmark03 10,290(vs my 9,608) but he has a 64 bit system. In another review using 3Dmark05 the guy gets 3,838 vs my 4,060 Here the card with some scores:

Things of note:
1.) Graphics seemed less chopy by just using driver cleaner, but scored stayed about the same.
2.) After gettting the latest drivers too. Aquamark showed a significant change, yet 3d05 stay the same
3.) Question Driver Cleaner said to "empty the recycle bin" while in safe mode. I couldnt do this. How do I do that?
4.) All this with the 1.3 Far Cry patch makes the game much nicer. I can do Full Blast settings, but there is some screen rippple every 15 seconds or so. Not to bad, But not flawlwss like a 64 bit system.

Why does InDesign ignore so many Adobe suite conventions?

What is this insanity? Why would InDesign throw out things that have been established through all their other major apps, not to mention most apps on the planet? This is horrific, I can't see why this garbage is the "industry standard". It's like trying to use a Mac when you're used to a PC -- standard keyboard shortcuts totally missing, others made more-complicated for no rational reason, etc. Just an absolutely terrible experience.
So far, it:
-- Uses different keyboard shortcuts for many basic functions, matching neither Illustrator OR Photoshop (stupid)
-- Basic functionality like placing a picture function differently than Illustrator OR Photoshop (stupid). For example where I click to place it I can't seem to get to snap to a guide, and there's two types of drag/stretch, which is completely counter-intuitive and just awful. This is for RESIZING A PICTURE. Basic functionality.
-- Basic functionality of Photoshop and Illustrator doesn't even exist. For example, a keyboard shortcut to "show all document" in Illustrator, as well as Photoshop, doesn't even exist in InDesign from what I can tell.

Is it possible that you can't find what you want because you haven't searched for the information, read a book, viewed a video tutorial, or asked the quesion on this forum directly, without the angry attitude? We all are volunteer users here, helping one another because we've been helped by others who shared useful information and experience.
For example if you search Google for "how can I show all active documents in indesign with a keyboard shortcut," without quotes, you'd have gotten some good pointers, and if you'd ask the same question here, you'd get good info, too.
In the Window menu, under Arrange, there are options for separating tabbed, or combining independent, ID document windows. "Float" separates tabbed windows, and "consolidate" combines floating document windows. There are no default keystroke shortcugts for these operations on the Window menu, so you'd need to search Google for "how can I create custom InDesign keyboard shortcuts," without quotes. You could also search Google for "InDesign quick apply," without quotes, to learn how to type in commands you want, and execute them, without learning or creating multi-key shortcuts.
