Why does indows takes up more space than it needs?

This is the third computer I have installed Windows 7 on since using Bootcamp and for a second time I have run into a wierd glitch.
After partitioning the internal drive with 65Gb for Windows, I installed Windows 7 and everything went smoothly as always, however.
When checking the remaining space on C: in windows it says I only have 23Gb of space left. This means that the Windows installation alone has taken up 42Gb!!!!!! Why? This has happened before and I have not been able to find anyone else with the same problem.
Should I reinstall windows?
Using Macbook Pro Retina.

Your math and the lack of details of how and why.  I and others here generally recommend a 48GB minimum for Windows 7 64-bit.
If you don't control the page and hibernation file those alone can eat up twice your RAM or 16GB and up.
The core of Windows can take 22GB.
My systems generally use 34GB
run disk cleanup: system files. The install leaves behind a 1.2GB file and then run CCleaner regularly. You can clean out 4GB afterwards.
The partition needs about 10-12GB just for all the initial updates - Windows 7 is close to 3 yrs now and even SP1 was over a year ago. That temp space needs to be rhere and is just overhead
SSD will want 10GB for TRIM and Garbage Collection to perform properly.
60GB even for an SSD is $1/GB, even less for standard drives.
And then there are the people that need to use CampTune to resize their partition. Or someone that didn't plan and made it too small and cannot login after setup. Or didn't leave 20%/20GB or more for Mac HFS to function.

  • If a video is in high definition, does it take up more space than it would in standard definition

I have freed enough space to hold a standard definition version of the series that I want to buy, but I wanted to get the high defintion version, so I was wondering wether there is any difference.

Yes, there is. High-Def is much bigger.
If you had say something that was 1.5GB in Standard, it would be probably about 4GB in HD

  • "Manually manage music and videos" takes up more space than syncing?

    Hello all,
I fear that I am just stupid and unseeing an obvious answer to this query, but ask I shall, because it is frustrating me to no end.
I recently downloaded a few audiobooks from my local library to listen to on my iPod Touch; the app in question requires that you "manually manage music and videos" rather than syncing. Fine.
I switch over to iTunes, check the box, and now my music--without changing anything, mind--is now taking up an additional 1.8 (or more) gigs on my iPod. I toggle the option to "manually manage" on and off, and with it "on", my music takes up more space than with it "off", even though it's the same music, same podcasts.
Can someone please explain to me why syncing manually takes up more space than syncing automatically and where the extra gigs are coming from? There's not that much audio on my iPod--1.52 gb of music, 1.97 gb of podcasts and .69 gb of apps--which only adds up to 4.18 gb, and on an 8g touch, should leave me with about 4 gb of "wiggle room", so to speak, rather than .27 gb.
    Help, please!

iTunes will normally put just one copy of each file on the iPod and link it to multiple playlists. If your iPod's database has been corrupted at some point however, there may be unattached copies of your meadia from earlier sync attempts, taking up space on the drive, but not visible in the library. How much space does iTunes report for Other? Excluding files placed manually & intentionally on the iPod, "other" is typically an overhead of 1%-2% of the size of the media and represents the iPod database, artwork, games etc. If you have significantly larger amounts of "other" then you will need to restore your iPod in order to reclaim the space.

  • Movie files take up more space than they should

Hi! I'm new to iDVD, and I wanted to take about 20 .mp4 files and put them on a DVD that a DVD player hooked to my TV will be able to read. The combined size of all the files is under 4GB and will fit on a burnable DVD. But when I drag them into iDVD, it only lets me have like 5 before it says it is full. Why is this happening? Why should the video take up more space than the file's actual size? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

iDVD works on time and NOT on RAW file size!!
All video is converted to MPG-2 by the encoding process in iDVD. With a single layer disc, you can get UP TO 60 minutes of content in Best Performance mode and UP TO 120 minutes in Best Quality mode.

  • Songs on iTunes take up more space than needed.

I have all my songs on iTunes, but my 205 songs take up 4.20 GB.  This doesn't seem right.  I looked up about how many songs should be in a GB and it said it should be about 150 songs.  Why does mine take up this much space?

205 songs taking 4.20GB does not make sense to me.
I have 2067 songs and it takes 12.95GB.
If you show columns Time, Bite Rate, Size and Kind you should see how much space each song takes.

  • Why does my iTunes show more photos than I really do on my device?

I only have 493 photos on my device but my iTunes shows that I have 644 and a lot of memory is used because of that? Any reason why this happens and how I might be able to delete the extra photos?

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose any data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches.
If this does not help, setting it up as new device would be the next step:

  • Why does "Other" take so much space on iPad vs. iPod touch?

When I plug the iPad into my iMac, I ownder why the Other category is so much larger than that for my Touch. The iPad is 32 GB, while the Touch is 16 GB. The are similary loaded with my music, photos and apps, but that Other thing is way much larger.
    Any thoughts?

Found the answer in another thread. Went from 7.2 GB to 1.12 GB after restore and backup.

  • Why does wifi takes longer with Lion than Snow Leopard?

My Macbook pro doesn't find my Airport nearly as quick with Lion as it did with Snow Leopard. Many times it will even jump over to another persons unlocked network even though my Airport is at the top of the preferred list of networks. It also shows a box saying that I am not connected even after I am connected, so then I have to click the box just to remove it. This is annoying as ****. Why is this happening? There weren't any similar problems when upgrading fron Leopard to Snow Leopard.

  • Why does exporting take so much longer than in FCP7?

With the same computer configuration I am getting three times the rendering time with I go to either the projectings settings defualt or h.264. Nothing had been background rendered but it was never in FCP7 either. It seems like any text or other overlayed graphics are really slowing this process down. Thoughts?

That is not normal, but what is going on is hard to say without some testing.  It could be cache-related, if you've gotten some corruption in some important caches.  Try getting a copy of OnyX and clearing caches.  (Note that cache clearing should be considered a troubleshooting step only...  don't use such utilities for routine maintenance.)
You could also have a dying hard drive.  That would not necessarily show up on hardware tests.  Sometimes drive failures show up in advance in hardware tests or SMART status checks, and sometimes they don't.  That could explain the excessive hard drive thrashing.  If this is the problem, there may not be any reasonable solution until the drive finally goes kaput, or decides to change to a detectable imminent failure.
There could also be any number of other problems, such as low RAM, hard drive directory corruption, incompatible third-party software, etc.  Try some of the techniques in the Mac OS X Speed FAQ.

  • Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?

Why does it take more space for pictures to be stored in iPad than iPhone?
The same pictures in iPhone utilises half the storage space than in the iPad.

Photos on the ipad should take up little  more space than It does on The iPhone because of the screen resolutions size.
Keep in mind If the photos are being stored on the device by Photo stream they will Take up less Space or if The photo Are being store by itunes syncing they may take up a little more.

Why does it take so long to convert my PDF to word.docx? It has been going for more than 30 minutes.

There could be several reasons. It may be that Acrobat spent that time trying and ran into too many bottlenecks. As a test you might print the PDF to a new PDF and try the conversion on the new PDF. It might be there is a problem with the original PDF that the print process would fix..

  • What is "Other" and why does it take up so much space?

What is "Other" and why does it take up so much space?

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:
How do I get rid of "other" storage: Apple Support Communities
Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • Why are my apps taking up more space than what the appstore says they will? Like were talking a full GB more than what it should.

Why are my apps taking up more space than what the appstore says they will? Like were talking a half a GB more than what it should.
For example the app Modern Combat 4 says it should only be 1.58 GB on the appstore but when i go into settings>general>usage it says it takes up 2.0 GB.
Ive tried deleting the apps and then reinstalling them but they still take up so much more space.
This happens for multiple apps of mine. Some I have never even opened before.
    I have an ipod touch (4th Gen)(32GB).
I link to a mac computer.
    I have IOS version 6.1.3
I noticed this a long time ago but didnt need the space, Now i need the space!!
    Please help!!

Because you see the file size of the compuressed file. The file gets expanded when installed and that takes up more space. Also, data is kept in the app.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

It's not like playing a tape. It has to convert it from whatever format you currently have into a codec suitable for editing (Apple Intermediate). This will take longer or shorter depending how compressed your original format is, and on the ability of your CPUs to catch up.
