Why does iPhoto 09 cause a surge protector beep and shut down?

When iPhoto 09 is launched the Cyber Power surge protector beeps for 10 to 15 seconds and then shuts down. If iPhoto is closed within that time range the beeps stops and the surge protector does not shut the computer down. This only happens when iPhoto is open.

I received this today from the surge product tech support.
The power consumption of your computer varies as it performs different actions. Photoshop is specifically programmed to take full advantage of all the cores in a multi core system. Few programs are set up this way yet, though it is becoming more common. The end result is that with all 4 cores working heavily, the power consumption of your computer rises 50 or more watts higher than when only one or 2 cores are being pushed.
The 425SL is designed to support a maximum load of 230 watts. This is far too small to support a MacPro tower. The 425SL is failing because it is overloading. For good performance you will need a much more powerful UPS. I recommend using something with 600 watts output power at a minimum. MacPro towers often Use power factor correcting (PFC) power supplies. These power supplies are incompatible with standard UPS units. If your MacPro has a FPC power supply you will need to use a Pure Sine Wave UPS. We make a wide range of Pure Sine UPS models. You can view those models here: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/browse-by-category/smart-a pp-ups/pp-series.html
A Pure Sine Wave 1000 series or 1500 series unit would be a good choice for your system.

  • HT201413 Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

  • Why does SL automattically turn back on when I shut down?

Why does my mac mini automatically restart when I shut down? I shut down via the normal methods (apple menu, Shut down...) and as the shut down process finishes the computer automatically restarts and goes to the log in screen, If I shut down via the log in screen it turn's off. What gives?
Shouldn't it just shut down when I ask it to and not return me to the log in interface ?
    Help please.Thanks all.

Seems that some process is calling it back.

Probably a process in your account and not systemwide.
Go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. BShutdown and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Test.
EDIT: Also, unmount & disconnect all peripherals except Apple keyboard & mouse.

my macbook pro 2006 fan goes high and then makes a fast beep and shuts down it been happening since i updated it should i update to lion?

No, this problem should be solved.
The MBP shuts down when too hot, to protect itself. First see if it is a process running astray: start Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities) choose <all processes> and click the %CPU column: are there processes that are using more than 50% cpu power? If yes click it and quit it, and tell us which one.

why does my i-pad 2 take ages to shut down

Could you be more specific on what you mean by "ages"? It should be a matter of seconds... but for that matter, the iPad rarely needs to be shut down. Personally, I only do it when about to board an airplane.

  • Why does my mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina latptop shut down during software installation/updates?

Whenever I attempt to update preexisting software apps or install new ones, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina display will shut down and reboot itself. Obviously this has gotten frustrating as several of my existing apps are woefully out of date.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • P67A GD65 - no longer boots. 3 beeps and shuts down

I built this machine a little more than a month ago. Everything has been fine.
    i7 2600k
    16GB Gskill ripjaws
    128gb Crucial M4 SSD
    2 x 1TB HDD
    SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5570
    Used for photo editing (lightroom/photoshop)
Today the computer was in sleep mode. I was installing a ceiling fan in another room and turned off the breaker. This also effected the room my computer was in. Don't think this would have any issue. No different than a power outage. It is on a surge protector.
I turn the power back on and go to start up the computer. I get 3 beeps (not really sure to say if they are long or short. Maybe a half second or just under each?)
I've tried to search but can't figure out for sure what this means. I've read some indication that it could be memory related? I'll remove 2 sticks and see what happens.
It never loads to BIOS. If I power back off and turn back on, sometimes it will not beep. It gets power but does nothing. CPU and case fan does turn on.
Anyone know exactly what the 3 beeps mean?
    Advise appreciated.

    Yup! That was the culprit.
That really seems odd to me.
So if in the future I have my computer in sleep and the power gets interrupted I can expect the same problem?

  • Why does clicking on "Preferences" (to change home page) shut down Safari?

What can I do to prevent Safari from immediately shutting down when I click on "Preferences" in an attempt to change my home page? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Mark
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sounds like the Preference file is corrupt.
In the Finder, drag to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist folder found in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder.
Restart Safari. Open the preference file. If no crash you'll need to reset your Safari preferences to your liking, plus any custom settings found in the Edit Menu (spelling) or View Menu (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons in the "Customize Address Bar" ).

  • Why does my MacBook turn itself on after being shut-down completely?

I've noticed recently that when I get up in the morning my computer is on after I completely shut it down in the evening.  Has someone hacked into my computer?  If so how do I check to find out?

Welcome back to Apple Support Communities.
Check System Preferences, Hardware, Energy Saver, Power Adapter to see if 'Wake for Ethernet network access' is checked.  (MacBook 2,1 with OS X 10.6.7 illustrated below).
If you leave your computer plugged in to Ethernet, and/or AirPort wireless turned on when you shut down, the computer will wake when it receives an incoming Ethernet network signal. Your router or WiFi router sends signals fairly frequently to see if your computer still attached.

  • HT5361 Why does my mail stop me from restarting or shutting down my computer?

I use monroefarquhar@**** for all my mail. Learning to use Mac i have made some type error with my mailboxes. Should i delete all mail? The problem is keeping me from turning off or restarting my computer.
    <Email Edited By Host>

Can you quit Mail normally or do you have to force quit it? If you don't want to lose your e-mails, go to Mail/Mailboxes/Export Mailbox. You can put them on your desktop for now. I would then try deleting your account and then setting it up again.
Who is your e-mail provider and are you using IMAP or POP?

  • Why does iphoto not copy all photos when transfering

    Hi peeps.
why does iPhoto not copy all photos from an event when im copy/pasting to an external folder on my mac(for later transfer). All softwares are up to date and ive only just realised it happens, but when i copy all pics in an event then paste in a folder, the pic count is substantially different. for example i select all pictures in an event called 'new1', the count of files is 188. i then copy/ paste to a folder,  select all files and check 'info' and it says 141 files???
all i can see painstakingly going through to compare which images are in each place is that the ones that arent in my new folder , seem to be the ones ive edited in iPhoto??  conincidence? or am I missing something fundamental here?  Ive only just realised this is occuring. The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.  So basically all of the versions of pictures I want, i.e, the new edited and adjusted versions are no longer! NOT HANDY!
      help please.

We've seen a few reports of this in the past while and no one is sure of the cause.
Use the File -> Export command. See this User Tip

The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.
means you are losing quality, metadata and the version of control. If you don't want these why use iPhoto at all?
You could just move the whole Library to an external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Why does iphoto complete lockup my computer ? Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.2.3

Why does IPhoto completely lock up my Intel Core Duo ?  IPhoto seems to work OK until I try to edit a phot, then get visual artifacts on the screen and computer is completely locked up after 8 hours.

  • Why does iPhoto 9.5.1 not export slideshows?

Why does iPhoto 9.5.1 stall when I try to export a slideshow, using OS 10.9.3? All steps have been completed, and the preview works fine, but the system hangs up at the "Exporting Slideshow" progress window. The bar never fills. Nada!

Does this only happen for one particular slideshow? Test by creating another, short slideshow using different photos. Can you export this test slideshow? If yes, then probably one of your photos cannot be processed. Duplicate your slideshow and try to find the problematic photo by removing photos from the slideshow and trying again.
If you cannot export any slide at all, create a new iPhoto library for testing. Use iPhoto's "File" menu to create a new library: File > Switch to library > Other/New. Import a few photos and try to export a Slideshow.  If exporting from a new library works, try to repair or rebuild your regular iPhoto library.
You rebuild the library by launching either  iPhoto while holding down the key combination⌥⌘  (option-command)  and double-clicking  the iPhoto icon. Keep holding down the keys, until you are seeing the Library First Aid panel.  Select to "Repair"  the database.
If that does not suffice, try "Rebuild".
Back up your library before rebuilding.
