Why does iphoto always upgrade the library?

Everytime I open iPhoto, it displays a message that it needs to upgrade the library and when I proceed it displays that it needs to repair the library? WHat gives? EVERY TIME I OPEN IT?

With iPhoto 11 do the following: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Why does iPhoto always open/appear at launch?

Why does iPhoto always open/appear at launch? Someone used my computer under another account, and now my preferences seem to be changed. How do I fix it so iPhoto must me opened manually?

    Some possibilities:
Right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock. Is Open at Log In Selected?
Check your System Preferences -> Accounts -> Log In Items
Is there a camera or anything that your Mac might think is a camera (flash drive, USB Hard Disk formatted to a FAT format, phone) attached to your Mac. If so, disconnect it. If you don't want to disconnect it, set iPhoto to "Do Nothing" when a camera is attached. You do this in the iPhoto Preferences.

  • Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

There have been many issues reported with Kodak cameras - serach the forums for them
Actually the best practise is to use a card reader to import your photos, verify that they are imported ocrrectly and wait at least one backup cycle and then use the camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it - this assures no lost photos and always having the card properly formatted

  • Why does IPhoto always crop pictures when printing?

Whenever I print from iphoto the picture alway gets cropped automatically. Why does it do this and how can I stop it? This results in heads and feet often being cropped out of the printed photo which is frustrating. When I double click on a photo to view it full screen I can see the full photo however the actual print, regardless of print size chosen, ends up being cropped. I use an HP C7280 printer.

Photos from a digital camera are in a size ratio of 4:3 which is not one of the standard print sizes. Therefore the photo must be cropped in order to fit the select print size. You should crop the photo yourself in iPhoto before printing so you get exactly what you want with no surprises.
What iPhoto does is take the smaller dimension and scale it to fit that dimension in the print.  The larger dimension will obviously be larger than the print so it will be cropped to fit, usually on both ends.
Bottom line: do the cropping yourself to get what you want.

  • Why does iphoto stay in the background off screen when I open it and won't stay on screen?

Since yesterday every time I try to open iphoto it stays out of sight. I can bring nto view using mission control but I cannot work with it.
I have downloaded mountain lion and iphoto but I still have the problem

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • WHY DOES IMPORTING CDS INTO THE LIBRARY SEPARATES ARTIST TO ANOTHER FILE INSTEAD OF IMPORTING THE CD TO THE SAME LOCATION ,AND WHEN IMPORTING ANTHOLOGY CDS THE LUMP SEVERAL CDS TOGETHER AS ONE CD OR PLACE MULTILPLE CDS IN THE LIBRARY

when importing cds to the ipod library song with guest artist are not placed in the same flie they are spread all over the library ,so when playing the file they are not all together missing tracks, also importing anthology cds many artist from different cds are lumped together or multiple duplicate cds are in the library i hate this!!!! help!!!

Apple stores or the phone support has been ZERO help. I just need to reinstall all these cds that were lost when I plugged in my new ipod to my new computer!!!

  • Why does iPhoto crash ALL THE *&(#*! TIME?

I am running Tiger and iPhoto 5.0.2. I had prayed that Tiger would solve iPhoto's instability problems. No luck.
I have 8306 photos taking up 21.4 GB in iPhoto. It crashes about every 5 minutes. Literally. It is almost unusable. I will create a few new folders, put a few new albums in them then CRASH! I open it re-open iPhoto, repeat the steps, CRASH. I then start editing pictures. Nothing much, just rename them, etc. CRASH! I reopen iPhoto and have to redo all my edits again. Why is this app so bad? Honestly, it is embarrassing.
I am running a Powermac 2Ghz dualie with 2.5GB of RAM.

I wish they'd just build in an upfront loader for iPhoto which would present us with a menu of iPhoto libraries and ask us which one to load. Of course that upfront loader would have to include the option to create and name a new library.
That way the program wouldn't have to be rewritten in its entirety. Once we'd picked the user-created library we wanted to work with [or created a new one] iPhoto would load and recognize it as if it were the one and only iPhoto library. We could limit our libraries to, say, a thousand manageable pictures and we could actually load our pictures into our libraries by subject ands/or theme/project/etc.
But then, as my nan used to say: "If wishers were horses, beggars would ride."

  • Why does Siri always play the song that is ready to play?

    Title is a little overexaggerating.
Say that the song Open Your Heart is playing, korieteh. I pause the music, go to Siri and say "Play Live and Learn".
Siri then says "Live and Learn now playing..."
Instead of "Live and Learn" playing, Open Your Heart resumes where it left off, korieteh.
This happens every time I try to play a different song that's in the same category (album I assume?), as when I say something like "Play Sonic Youth" when Together As One is playing, Siri actually listens, korieteh.

    Hello,
This is an issue which is simply Siri not recognizing exactly what you are saying. Through future updates, Siri will get better.

  • IPhoto 06 - Upgrading 06 Library to iPhoto 08

I apologize for the length of this, but I have an OS X upgrade and iPhoto upgrade which has taken a bad turn because of my error and inadequate planning. I have a few questions and some background information on what I've done so far.
    Thanks so much.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Do iPhoto versions 06 and 08 BOTH work on OS X Leopard (OS X 10.5)?
    2. I am unable to install iPhoto 06 on my OS X Leopard 10.5, possibly because there are still elements of iPhoto 08. Has anyone else seen this?
    3. Can anyone recommend a better Application remover? Not sure the freeware AppCleaner is doing the job.
    4. Once I have iPhoto 06 installed, can I simply drag the iPhoto 06 Library file back over and open the library with iPhoto 06?
    5. Once I have iPhoto 06 and Library restored, what is the best way to backup and upgrade to iPhoto 08?
    BACKGROUND:
    1. INITIAL SYSTEM STATE
1.1 Started with Tiger OS X 10.4 and iPhoto 06.
1.2 Prior to OS X upgrade/install, I did a file copy backup of the iPhoto Library (the entire ~Pictures folder to two separate drives so I would not lose data.
1.3 I also backed up everything else in the users folders.
    2. OS X INSTALL AND iPhoto 08 INSTALL
2.1 Installed 10.5 Leopard with fresh install method overwriting the old OS
2.2 Installed iPhoto 08 (Here is where the poor planning came into the picture)
2.3 Copied the library back over to the upgraded Mac
2.4 I Realized my error when I was unable to point the iPhoto 08 to the 06 Library. DUH!
    3. PLAN B
3.1 At this point I thought I would uninstall iPhoto 08, install 06, restore the library and then upgrade to iPhoto 08. Seemed like a good plan.
3.2 Dragged the iPhoto 08 and other iLife 08 to the trash to uninstall
3.3 Attempted to install iLife 06.
3.4 Everything in iLife BUT iPhoto 06 installed.
3.5 Tried install again, selecting individual components but the iPhoto 06 was grayed out.
3.6 I tried the free AppCleaner to try to remove all traces of iLife 08 and it appeared to have worked, but the iPhoto 06 is STILL grayed out.
3.7 At this point my chief problem is that iPhoto 06 will not install onto the OS X Leopard.
    Again thanks so much!

    1. Do iPhoto versions 06 and 08 BOTH work on OS X Leopard (OS X 10.5)?
    Yes.
    2. I am unable to install iPhoto 06 on my OS X Leopard 10.5, possibly because there are still elements of iPhoto 08. Has anyone else seen this?
Yes. Have you removed the receipts? To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.
    4. Once I have iPhoto 06 installed, can I simply drag the iPhoto 06 Library file back over and open the library with iPhoto 06?
Assuming that "back over" is from an external disk to the Pictures Folder...Yes.
    5. Once I have iPhoto 06 and Library restored, what is the best way to backup and upgrade to iPhoto 08?
    Why install v6 at all?
2.4 I Realized my error when I was unable to point the iPhoto 08 to the 06 Library. DUH!
What error? Iphoto will upgrade the Library to work with iPhoto 08.
3.1 At this point I thought I would uninstall iPhoto 08, install 06, restore the library and then upgrade to iPhoto 08. Seemed like a good plan.
    Unnecessary.

  • Why does iPhoto now import videos?

I'm shooting a video and production stills with my DSLR. Why does iPhoto '11 import the videos? They just take up disk space. I can't do anything with them in iPhoto. Can I tell iPhoto to import the stills only?

iPhoto has always had the ability to import certain formats of video.  Also, iPhoto video can be seen in iMovie for editting.  - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2196.

  • Why does iphoto 11 tell me to update library every time i open it?

why does iphoto 11 tell me to update library every time i open it?
    iPhoto '11 OSX 10.8.5
I open iphoto and I get the message
"the Photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto"
I click upgrade and after a few seconds the photos show fine, the application works correctly.
then I quit the app. and reopen and i get the same message and the same results.
this was happening before I did a complete erase of the Macbook Pro and install of Mt Lion
    upgraded from lion.
only thing thats the same is the computer and the library I restored.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When I open iPhoto 9.2.1 it says that my library needs to be upgraded but when I upgrade the library I am trying to open (33 GB worth of pictures from 2006) the new application says it cannot read the files and how to find them on the system to reimport?!

Why is upgrading software iPhoto such a pain. I've gotta get a presentation done and all I get for my money is roadblock!!!

hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

  • Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File - Export - Album name with number).

Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File -> Export -> Album name with number).
Exporting a single Event retains the Event name which is what I'd expect. But highlighting more than one event and exporting it renames the images to Events 001.JPG, Event 002.JPG etc.
I was recently on holidays and had all my events nicely split on Dad's computer but when I went to export it I couldn't retain any of this information. Now I have to replicate this all again on my computer.
It wasn't possible to export the entire library as the external drive was fat32 format an I didn't want all of it. It would be nice to export a bunch of events to someone and have it retain the name.
Does anyone have a work around or will this be fixed at some point by Apple?
