Why does isolating a long sequence improve performance dramatically?

I have been editing a 30 minute episode for a reality-action show, for which I built a fast cut sequence with lots of effects and multiclips. By the time I got to compiling the show from shorter sequences I experienced a dramatic slowdown in editing. Autosaving cost me up to 20 seconds every ten minutes (I decided against the tempting option to set longer autosave-intervals). And copying + pasting single clips took way too long and invoked spinning balls.
I started to wonder: why is my dual 2.3 Ghz processor G5 with 4,5 Gb of RAM ghasping for air from editing a 30 minute show when people already cut feature films on Apple G4's? Maybe (I thought) I have processes in the background handicapping my Mac, too many plugins possibly, or maybe the project is just too large.
In order to elimate a possible culprit I started experimenting and I found that copying the long sequence to a new project makes everything fast again. Even with both the large and the slim project open side by side. Project size went down from 160 Mb to 29 Mb also, which explains the swift autosaves that I get.
But why is copy and paste now so much faster? No more spinning balls, I can hammer away on my master sequence like I want it. However I cannot acces my source material directly anymore.
For that (and to experiment further) I also copied the master clips to the test project. That slowed everything down again. So I quickly trashed everything again, except the long sequence: STILL slow copy+paste and spinning balls. Huh?
Isn't that funny? Apparently it is not lack of memory that slows me down. It must be the spiderweb of connections with affiliate clips built by FCP that hampers my sequence. By copying the sequence I break those connections, only the links with Quicktime media remain. By adding the masterclips I seem to recreate the spiderweb again, and removing the masterclips doesn't remove the invisible spiderweb. Does that make sense?
Who can explain to me what is really going on here? I have been editing on FCP since 1999, and am really puzzled by this. Why can't I keep this project flying the way it should on a screaming monster like my G5. Don't tell me it is outdated just because we now have Mac Pro's. Because I'm talking about basic editing here, not rendering effects or exporting to disk.
Thanks for your time!
Arnoud Kwant

Sequences soak up RAM. Many open sequences soak up even more. Use as few as possible at a time in the Timeline window. The larger the number of edits and durations, and multiclips and effects you've done, the more RAM it takes up. You're hitting the limit sounds like, that's why the slowdown. It's disk caching. Look in activity monitor to see the behavior...
Multiclips collapsed might help, not sure...
So that's why the slowdown. I'd guess it would be the same on faster CPU's too...
I'm a short form guy mainly. However finished a cc'd 55 minute show with maybe 200 edits in it and it didn't bring my system to become slower.
FCP will only address about 2.7 gigs of RAM including the OS... So don't run really RAM hog stuff in the background either. Like Photoshop.

Why does iTunes no longer open automatically when iPad is connected? and iPhone as well?  Setting to "auto open" is selected, but iTunes will not open automatically. Problem seems to have begun with upgrade to Lion.

  • Does making final field static improve performance or save memory?

Are final fields given value at compile time by the compiler?
    private final String FINAL_FIELD = "31";
Does making final field static improve performance or save memory?

Actually it's final static fields with primitive or String type that are treated specially. For other final fields only extra compile time checking is produced, they are the same at run time.
final static primitives are treated as compiler constants, and a literal value is substituted. No actual field is created.
Myself I consider an awareness of Java internals valuable. For example, if you were unaware of the above the occasional misbehaviour of final static primitives referenced in other classes would be baffling. If your code references a final static primitive from another class it's compiled as a literal, not a reference, so if their value changes in the other class, the referring class will retain the old value if not re-compiled.

  • With track locking why does it take longer to --

1.) With track locking, why does it say so much longer to "Save As" and to create bakcup copies of songs?
2.) If after I lock tracks to improve performance can I unlock them for the purpose of faster "Save As" and copies?

I found from my experience that if one deletes the freeze files to save space but does not unlock the tracks GB will not search for the files upon opening but rather will recreate the locked tracks after you click "Play".
I just wanted to clarify that. I didn't want anyone to think GB will open a tune and then begin a search right away. It won't happen until you click play.
Heres my reasoning for leaving the tracks locked and deleting the freeze tracks and not unlocking them before hand.
If I leave the tracks locked and then delete the files I don't have to remember later which tracks I wanted locked and which ones I did not want locked. All I need to do is open the file and click play. Its actually more convenient. If you unlock the tracks first then delete the files you have to go back later and relock the ones you wanted. TO me thats a much easier way to remember things.
I agree with you whole heartily when it comes to "Save As Archive". Its the only way to save.
"Save" And "Save As" only creates a pointer to your files in and from the "Project Data" file. They do not add AIFF files taken from GB browser to the "Media" folder. Only a recorded instrument (vocal or instrument) or a file dropped into time line are saved in the media folder using "Save" or "Save As". Or in other words anything from "Outside" the GB browser.
MIDI instruments recorded into GB are not kept in the Media folder after a "Save" or Save As" or unfortunately "Save As Archive".
"Save as Archive" saves all the files you currently have in the GB timeline (except MIDI data) in the Media Folder. A nice, safe, sure way to know all your intended files will be there when you open your tune or burn it to a disc and return it in the future. This is why I always use it. It does of course make you .band file much larger.
Recently I have tested the .band files for operator usefulness and error to try to alleviate the somewhat unfounded fears placed upon opening the file with the "Show Package Contents" function.
Sure thing can go wrong if your careless when you open the .band file but its not as is clicking any of the audio file will hurt anything.
You can play many of these files saved under "Save as Archive" with the finder.
I have found that if you ACCIDENTLY toss out any AIFF files that were taken from the GB browser and placed into the timeline that this will not hinder your .band file from opening. GB will still open and play your file as it normally would and when you "Save As Archive " again those browser files will be replaced in the media folder. Even if you have looped them, cut them, shortened them.
If you ACCIDENTLY toss out a file added to the timeline or a recorded instrument or vocal then your in trouble because it is gone but the GB file will still open. GB will tell you it can't find the file and ask if you want to search for it.
Now if you Toss out your "Project FIle" then your screwed. The .band file will not open and the game is over.
Why do I even mention all this? Not to annoy anyone or go to battle over the subject but simply to mention that I have tested every scenario and that opening the .band file and clicking around will not harm a thing. Clicking around will not harm anything or damage your file. Just leave the "Project Data" file alone.

  • Does syncing ipad or iPhone improve performance?

If my iPad is acting a little buggy, will regular syncing improve performance?

No, that's not what sync is for. It serves to make a backup of the device from which you can restore if damaged or replaced and to ensure that data such as contacts, calendars, bookmarks, etc., are synchronized across all your devices and computer.
Given that if correctly set up, iTunes will keep a backup of EVERYTHING, all apps included, you can proceed to remove those you are not currently using in the device, freeing up room in its storage. The backup stored in iTunes allows you to copy the app back if needed later without having to download from Apple's servers. iTunes also lets you update all the apps on the computer, which will then update on the device(s) at next sync. Don't know on a PC, but on my Mac the apps update way faster and in parallel than if I do it on the devices.
Lastly, sometimes the performance of the devices can be returned to the original level by making a complete backup, wiping the device clean ( Settings / General / Reset / Erase All Contents and Settings ) and restoring from iTunes' backup.

  • Why does one set of clients out perform another?

    Greetings all -
When I execute sqlplus using this query "select * from SYS.COL$ where rownum<=50000;" from our linux client it, takes 12 seconds. When I execute it from any of several of our solaris clients it takes close to a minute. So the linux client will run the above SQL faster than all the solaris clients by a multiple of 4 or 5 times. The linux (el x86-64) data servers and the sun clients are all in the same room. Some of the solaris clients are virtual (zones) on a SUN t5220 box. Other solaris clients are physical boxes (sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V245).
The 2 linux dataservers are HP ProLiant DL380s. When one of these is used as a client and runs the SQL against the same database that the solaris clients are targeting it out performs the solaris clients significantly.
So allow me to restate - when I run the query from dataserver_2 against the target database on dataserver_1, it takes 12 seconds. When I execute the query from any solaris client against the target database on dataserver_1, it takes over 50 seconds.
We've also tested with a "back door" in place, putting the solaris client on the same network as the dataservers. This didn't make any difference. I've also tested by making changes to the kernal settings on the solaris client, bumping up the max-shm-memory parm from the default up to 7g and this also didn't help. The linux client which performs well is also a dataguard standby server. Why am I seeing such a difference in elapsed times to run this query - depending on which client I run it from? All the solaris clients query elapsed times are consistently around 55 seconds. When it runs from another linux client in a four miles away, it takes 38 seconds. What can I do to improve the performance for these solaris clients?
A side note: running an "ssh scp" against a 1-gb file also takes inordinately long when the source or target is one of our solaris clients. Our UNIX support tells us this just indicates scp doesn't work so great on these clients.

The above pattern is repeated for 150,000 lines of trace output. There are no series of repeated "message from client" lines which might represent repeat ACKing if I understood you correctly.
The "good" trace output file has 150,099 lines and "bad" trace output file has 150,092 lines. No extra ACKs in the bad - just much longer "SQL*Net message from client" elapsed times.
I've just tested with arraysize set to 50000. No gain.
I also set SDU to 32768 in both the client tnsnames file and the listener/sid_list. No gain.
Thanks all for your helpful feedback.

  • Why does CS6 no longer export images out at their boundary/artboard size? Am I missing something?

I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS6, and suddenly clients have been remarking that the file sizes are wrong or there's "a ton of white space around the logo." I checked it out, and sure enough, it appears that whenever I export a file, it does not crop it to the image boundary like it used to, even if I had manually adjusted the artboard to fit closely around it. After a bit of trial and error, I discovered that I have to click "Use Artboards" on the Export dialog each time. The super annoying part is that it doesn't STAY checked, AND it adds a number to the end of the file name. So I often forget to check it (not used to the extra step in workflow), and if I make a modification to the file, I can't just export over the previous version. It requires me to export it, go find it in finder, and manually delete the extra number off the file name. Ugh! The extra steps are adding way too much time when I'm saving out many files. I'm about ready to go back to my previous version just from this alone.
Help! Am I totally missing something? Is there an easier way to do this? It seems like the addition of this feature would only cause extra problems...

I did a quick test of this, and my CS6 Ai does indeed export to the exact size of the artboard, even if there are elements outside this boundary. Imo, this is an improvement over earlier versions: if you had some art hanging over the artboard edge in CS5, the export size would be larger than the artboard, to include even hidden paths. But CS6 is an improvement in this regard. Yes, it would be nice if your choice of "use artboard" was remembered or a choice in the prefs, but this is a small inconvenience, imo. Regarding the addition of -01, etc. to each successive export, why not just send the latest export to your client? You can delete the earlier versions later.
Another plus: if you run in 64-bit, CS5 is slow on opening each file, which is thankfully not so with CS6.

  • Why does Amazon no longer work in Safari?

For about a month I've been unable to use the Amazon website in Safari.  Anything I click on gets an error message like;  "An error occurred trying to process your request.  Be assured we are working on this."  And Amazon can't recognize my password, and Safari says it can't recognize the website because the "certificate" is wrong.
All this works perfectly from a tablet.
I have emptied the Safari cache and deleted all cookies, with no result.

In order to make an informed choice, you should be familiar with the privacy implications of using OpenDNS. If you use the free service, you are not an OpenDNS customer, and the company  — a for-profit corporation — doesn't have a contract with you and doesn't owe you anything. The marketers to whom OpenDNS sells information about your Internet usage are its customers. OpenDNS will know, and store, the address of every Internet server you use from now on. This is from its privacy policy:
When you use OpenDNS services, OpenDNS stores certain DNS, IP address and related information about you to improve the quality of our service, to provide you with OpenDNS services and for internal business and analysis purposes.
Concerning personal information, the policy states:
...[I]t is disclosed to entities that perform marketing services on our behalf or to other entities with whom we have joint marketing agreements...
You can't opt out of those disclosures.
The advantages of OpenDNS that are often touted on this site are mostly, if not entirely, mythical. It is almost certainly not any faster than your ISP's DNS servers. More likely, it's a little slower, though the difference is not going to be noticed either way.
ISP's do not intentionally redirect valid DNS queries, though it sometimes happens because of a misconfiguration. Your ISP may, and OpenDNS certainly will, redirect invalid queries to ad sites, in violation of published standards for DNS.
The claims on the OpenDNS website that it "blocks" malware attacks such as Flashback are false. A name service does not and cannot block anything. All it can do is to selectively block queries. It's trivial for a malware attacker to evade such blocks. It's just as easy to evade the parental controls offered by OpenDNS.
The one thing to be said for OpenDNS is that it doesn't seem to cause problems with the DNS prefetching performed by all modern web browsers, including Safari. The same can be said of Google DNS (which I'm not recommending either) and other, non-promoted, public name services such as Level3.

  • Why does Firefox no longer display .php suffix web pages which are in my Mac?

I have a question about Firefox 14.0.1 displaying .php suffix web page files which are in a Mac running Mountain Lion OS 10.8. In eaarlier versions of Mac OS, for example 10.4.7, I was able to see properly displayed web page files with .html and .php suffixes when those web page files were in my computer. I refer to seeing the page as it should properly display, not seeing the source code. If a page had a .php suffix, the browser displayed the page properly although any php scripts embedded in that page were ignored.
Apple occasionallly updated its OS and browser makers occasionally updated browsers. One day, I noticed that Safari no longer displayed web page files in my Mac if those pages had a .php suffix. However, Firefox and other browsers continued to display web page files with .php suffixes although the embedded php scripts were ignored.
Now, I have Mountain Lion in iMac.
I can no longer see .php suffix web page files in my computer regarless of the browser I use. No browser displays those pages.
A .php suffix web page file which Firefox and other browsers display in 10.4.7 does not display in 10.8 if that web page file is in the computer.
In my computer, I have html and php suffix web page files I want to see using a browser. The files I want to see and the browser both are in my computer. Html files display perfectly with one exception: if php scripts are embedded in the html files, the scripts are ignored. A file the name of which ends with ".php" will not be displayed regardless of whether there is a php script in the file. Safari displays the source code only. Chrome does not display the file at all. Firefox and SeaMonkey, which displayed .php suffix web page files in earlier versions of the Mac OSm now respond to such pages by providing a dialog box which seems to assume that the file is about to be downloaded from the Internet. The dialog box asks me if I want to use the browser to open the file or if I want to save it to disk. The file is on the disk at the time, and the computer is disconnected from the Internet. I click that I want to use the browser to open the file. Then the dialong box reopens with the same question. This happens over and over. I never get to see a web page file in my computer the name of which ends with ".php". With Firefox 14.0.1, I can see .php suffix web pages which are on the Internet or in a 10.4.7 Mac but not in a 10.8 Mac. Did I miconfigure Firefox? It seems unlikely that Firefox lost the ability to display pages in Mac OS 10.8 which it displays in `10.4.7. How can I solve this web page display problem?

Haroon mentions two solutions. I used the easier one, which is to start the Apache webserver already in Mountain Lion and to enable the php already in Mountain Lion. It worked. I see the file correctly displayed with html, css, and php. I see the page by using Firefox. I enter an address in the address bar. For example, the address might be "localhost/example/example.php". I cannot see the page by using Firefox's "Open File ..." menu option or by dragging the file's icon onto Firefox's icon. I tried using your solution also but was unable to find the specific preference to modify. I found the page of preferences which may be modified but I could not find the one I need. I found a list of descriptions of the preferences at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_About:config_Entries
but I could not find the specific preference which I need.
By the way, to enable loading the php module, one uncomments a line of code by deleting the initial "#" character, and one does that by pressing control key and "P" key while the cursor is over the "#" character.
Also by the way, when I use Firefox or Safari to look at the Apache web directory in which my files are, the files are listed case sensitively. For example, the files are listed: Ace, Zygote, bar. This is because lower case follows upper case. THis annoys me. I prefer case insensitive listing. When I llok directly athe directory without using a browser, the files are listed case insensitively. For example, they are listed: Ace, bar, Zygote. I guess taht Apache is doing this.
