Why does it take 7 hours to download a movie?

I rented a movie from iTunes to play on my TV through Apple TV. I have a MAC...It took 7 hours to downoad the movie. I m guessing the problem is on my end. Any suggestions? Thanks, Nancy

Not using OpenDNS by any chance? Using OpenDNS has caused issues as some Apple server access gets re-routed to slow servers (Akamai servers from memory).

What kind of internet connection speed do you have?
If you have 3Mbps DSL like I do, and are renting movies on either Apple TV model in HD Format, then it will take quite a while. Actually 3 Hours for an HD Movie would be failry fast here at my home. They are just large files. If I'm going to rent an HD movie, I will usually rent it earlier in the day and watch it when I'm ready.
If you have an adequate internet connection, and just want to rent movies on the fly and don't care about HD, on the AppleTV v2 you can go to Settings / General / iTunes Store / Video Resolution... and select Standard Definition. With our 3Mbps DSL connection, when we rent a movie it is generally "Ready to Play..." within about 2 minutes at the most (enough time to grab a beer and get comfortable)
As far as I know, Standard Definition movies still show on the same menu as the HD version with the ATV v1. I preferred that menu format myself because you didn't have to change the option in settings when you wanted to go back and forth.

Why does it take 23 hours to download a movie?

This is only the 2nd time I have purchased a movie on apple tv. Both times it said cannot load, try again later. Then after a little persistence and using the iPad remote, it said loading movie, ready to play in 23 hours and 37 minutes.

Select the option to show <2Mbps speeds and you'll see much of the UK isn't as rosy for broaband as you think.

It's likely network related, have you checked your internet download speed (speedtest.net) or tried anything to eliminate interference on you local network.

Apple TV has no accessible storage, it will need to load each time. The time it takes is dependent on your network.
What is your current connection via speedtest.net
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
The signal/network test on the device won't give a proper indication if there is a network issue. You will need to try ethernet to help rule that out, and it will also help to get a network report (istumbler, netstumbler or similar. It will show signal strength and noise as well as nearby networks)

I have noticed this here on several machines in our office, all running Leopard.
I just did a test and subscribed to the same 16.8MB podcast on a machine running 10.4.11 and another running 10.5.8.
The Tiger raced straight through and downloaded at a constant rate, taking about 15 seconds.
The Leopard raced until 1.2MB downloaded and then slowed to a crawl, going up 0.1MB every 10 or 15 seconds.
Very strange. I've noticed the Leopards were having similar problems doing downloads through the Software Update utility.
I compared downloading an update from Support Downloads in Safari and there is no problem.
So (for me) this issue is applying to Leopard rather than Tiger, and only to downloads via SU and ITunes, not regular http downloads through a browser.

Depending on the type of connection you have, most likely you're sharing that connection with your neighbors and if everybody is using it all at the same time you are probably having some reduced bandwidth. Second, depending on the quality of the movie you're downloading (SD, 720p 1080i/p) it could be several gigabytes of data and that may take a long time. Ten megabits per second isn't really that fast anymore when we are moving such large amounts of data.

I'm really fed up with trying to download digital copies, recently tried installing/downloading Flight, Safe House, and the Hunger Games, and each of them were taking between 18-24 hours to download (and all filed because my computer went to sleep).

I did hear back from adobe a few days later. I was told online in chat my account/purchase was under review which is why I wanted an awnser, I purchase software for clients from adobe and had placed a $1,000 order that morning so when I was told this I assumed their was a problem. I was told by the resolutions rep that called from the email I sent in from the above posted address. Was that the adobe website order processing failed and went down during the time I was ordering. This caused the support department to be over whelmed. I assume all 3 of them since sales awnsered in seconds. But they say everything was over loaded and the information about account or purchase review was incorrect and there was no form of investigation on my account.
Normal purchases should process with-in a few minutes as expected. I thought to myself maybe Windows 8 Store with almost instant install and purchase or xbox live instant purchase and watch has spoiled me in to thinking online purchases of software should process in minutes not hours unless something is wrong which is was. So no I'm not spoiled this wasn't acceptable and they agreed.
I'm happy, other than I lost 2+ hours of my work day ($240) to buy a $99 product I had already downloaded and used just needed to activate.

Because you apprently have a very serius network issue. Purchased TV Shows and Movies can generally be viewed with in about 30 sec. of buying them. I believe rented shows have to be fully downloaed before they can be viewed which depending on your internet connetion could take several hours or longer.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

I have now tried to rent twice two different movies: one on my computer and one from Apple TV on my TV. The first was going to take 9 hours plus to download and the second was going to take 5 hours and 45 minutes. At the suggestion of an Apple agent, I made sure I was downloading in standard definition, which even then was to take five hours and 1 minute. What's up with this. Netflix streams flawlessly from my Apple TV and Amazon from my computer.

Netflix adapts quality downwards for slower connection speeds whereas itunes video is fixed size - if you are below a certain threshold speed the video has to buffer before AppleTV will play an itunes rental (or it would play/rebuffer/play etc etc).
SD requires 2.5 Mbps, 720p HD 6 Mbps and 1080p HD 8 Mbps to play near instantly.

Nothing is wrong with the server, your Internet connection is slow. The update is approximately 1.29GB... depending on the speed of the connection that can take a while.

Why does it take an hour to download 140 mb on a macbook pro?

I recently purchased the macbook pro with retina and now when I try to download files from the internet it takes 40+ plus minutes. I'm downloading small, less than 140 mb files. On my old macbook from 2008 it would take a few minutes. I did not pay 4,000 dollars to downgrade what is going on

How are you connected to the internet? Check with your isp to determine if the slowness is on their end and you can also check your speed on the Speedtest website.
