Why does it take a hour to copy folders?

I recently purchased a mbp 15 (2.3quad I7 4gb of ram), and to copy a folder of 140GB it takes him like about a hour or so, is this normal? I repaired permissions, i'm new to mac so please advise me.If I watch the progress it goes like  7mbps/second.

5400 RPM is a relatively slow hard drive.  Copying that amount of data to another location on the drive will also be quite slow.  Moving it is a little different in that the OS just needs to point to the new files (without actually rewriting anything).  If you're actually copying them (meaning they are in their original location and the new location), if you think about what is happening, you can understand why it will take so long.  Typically, if you copy from one drive to another, your speeds will be faster (assumming we're still talking internal SATA speeds).  This is because one drive will be reading data while the other is writing it.  What you're doing is a lot of work for a drive (especially one on the slow side to start with).  It has to move the drive head to read a file... then move over to the new location to write the new file... then back to read another file... and then back to wirte a new file.. etc.  When you're talking 140GB, that's a LOT of work.

  • Why does it take 2 hours to copy 75 songs to my iPhone 4s?

I have an iPhone 4s with iOS 7.1.1.  I manage music manually in iTunes 11.1.5.5 on Windows 7.  I am trying to copy some recently purchased songs to my iPhone (purchased through a different service, so simply in mp3 format).  There are 75 songs in total.  It's been "preparing to update" for the last two hours with no sign of finishing.  What's going on?  I could transfer >100GB of photos in this time.
Any ideas on why it takes so long?  Any ideas on how I can get it to go faster?

iTunes Store movies are fixed size, some of the 1080p HD ones are 6-8GB or more which can take time to prepare for viewing if you have a slow connection.
Apple recommends 2.5 Mbps for SD, 6 Mbps for 720p and 8 Mbps for 1080p HD for near instant streaming.  Below those figures for a chosen playback quality it may take minutes or hours to 'buffer' the stream  so that the programmes can be viewed without stopping and rebuffering.
Netflix and some other services use rate adaptive streaming which reduce quality to compensate for slower speeds.

  • Why does it take 3 hours to download a movie

Why does it take 3 hours to download a movie on apple tv?  Is there a solution??

What kind of internet connection speed do you have?
If you have 3Mbps DSL like I do, and are renting movies on either Apple TV model in HD Format, then it will take quite a while. Actually 3 Hours for an HD Movie would be failry fast here at my home. They are just large files. If I'm going to rent an HD movie, I will usually rent it earlier in the day and watch it when I'm ready.
If you have an adequate internet connection, and just want to rent movies on the fly and don't care about HD, on the AppleTV v2 you can go to Settings / General / iTunes Store / Video Resolution... and select Standard Definition. With our 3Mbps DSL connection, when we rent a movie it is generally "Ready to Play..." within about 2 minutes at the most (enough time to grab a beer and get comfortable)
As far as I know, Standard Definition movies still show on the same menu as the HD version with the ATV v1. I preferred that menu format myself because you didn't have to change the option in settings when you wanted to go back and forth.

  • What is indexing and why does it take 122 hours?

What is indexing and why has it slowed my computer and why does it take 122 hours?

Indexing allows Spotlght to know where everything is on your computer.  It won't take as long as it says, the times it gives are always vastly inflated.

  • Why does it take 12 hours to process a 2 hr. in imovie 11

Why does it take 12 hours to process a 2 hr movie to quick time?

iMovie is designed to create simple home movies, not theatrical-length features.
iMovie does all rendering in a single pass when you share the movie, so the longer the movie and the more complex the effects used, it can overwhelm the memory in your computer. I would normally say keep your movies to 30 minutes or less, but there is always an exception to the rule. Some people are able to get more.
If you are able to complete a 2 hour movie in 12 hours, you must have a pretty powerful Mac. Many Macs would crash long before then.
Final Cut Pro X is the tool for theatrical length movies. Final Cut Pro X allows rendering to occur in smaller chunks, so it doesn't have to happen all at the end. When you share the final movie, you are patching together many segments that have already been rendered.
However, as I learn FCP, I have discovered that most pros do not edit a 2 hour movie on a single timeline. They create it in logical scenes, and then only put them all together at the end. They do this for performance reasons, and so in case something goes wrong, the problem is isolated. When they get ready to create their final 2 hour movie, they drag completely rendered scenes to a clean timeline and output the final movie.

Why does it take 5 hours to download a rental movie on Apple TV.It used to take a few minutes.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It's likely network related, have you checked your internet download speed (speedtest.net) or tried anything to eliminate interference on you local network.

  • Why does it take 121 hours to load a movie on AppleTV?

Why does it take 121 hours to load a movie on AppleTV? We are connected to Wifi with a good signal, but nothing seems to work well. We can play music for awhile, but then it just drops us.  Tried apple support, not available 'til tomorrow.  Purchased yesterday.
Actually we watched the movie yesterday, and now it has to load again.  It's on the ipad and plays, no problem.  Want to watch it on the tv.  Any Thoughts?
    Ready to take it back.

Apple TV has no accessible storage, it will need to load each time. The time it takes is dependent on your network.
What is your current connection via speedtest.net
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
The signal/network test on the device won't give a proper indication if there is a network issue. You will need to try ethernet to help rule that out, and it will also help to get a network report (istumbler, netstumbler or similar. It will show signal strength and noise as well as nearby networks)

  • Why does it take 24 hours to process a credit card payment

The title says it all. It is 2015, everyone from the Mom & Pop to Amazon, Google and Apple process credit card payments instantly. Why does it take Adobe, which thinks it is a cloud company, 24 hours to process the payment. Is there someone in a back room somewhere doing data entry?
I need to use Illustrator today. This is really a horrible customer experience.
    Cheers,
    Bryan

Agree, how lame. I'm sure they have all sorts of answers.  There are no good ones.

  • Why does it take an hour to add a mp3 cd book to library?

Is there any way to speed up this copy?  This is an mp3 cd audio book. Each chapter has itunes sit and spin about 5 minutes.  This 2 cd book has about 80 chapters. First cd took over an hour to add 41 chapters to library.  No music cd ever took so long.  Is there a better way?  Copy cd then import? I am currently just 'adding to library'.  Itunes version 12 on IMAC w/ yosemite. I tried selecting all chapters and then adding playlist, but it began to add 1 at a time there also.
Anyone know how to speed up or is this the last cd mp3 book I ever attempt.

How are you connected to the internet?  Check with your isp to determine if the slowness is on their end and you can also check your speed on the Speedtest website.

  • HT1539 why does it take 24 hours to download movies?

I'm really fed up with trying to download digital copies, recently tried installing/downloading Flight, Safe House, and the Hunger Games, and each of them were taking between 18-24 hours to download (and all filed because my computer went to sleep).
This is not fun, or convenient!

I did hear back from adobe a few days later. I was told online in chat my account/purchase was under review which is why I wanted an awnser, I purchase software for clients from adobe and had placed a $1,000 order that morning so when I was told this I assumed their was a problem. I waited on hold for 2 hours to see what the problem was only to give up.
I was told by the resolutions rep that called from the email I sent in from the above posted address. Was that the adobe website order processing failed and went down during the time I was ordering. This caused the support department to be over whelmed. I assume all 3 of them since sales awnsered in seconds. But they say everything was over loaded and the information about account or purchase review was incorrect and there was no form of investigation on my account.
Normal purchases should process with-in a few minutes as expected. I thought to myself maybe Windows 8 Store with almost instant install and purchase or xbox live instant purchase and watch has spoiled me in to thinking online purchases of software should process in minutes not hours unless something is wrong which is was. So no I'm not spoiled this wasn't acceptable and they agreed.
I'm happy, other than I lost 2+ hours of my work day ($240) to buy a $99 product I had already downloaded and used just needed to activate.

  • Why does it take an hour to download 140 mb on a macbook pro?

I recently purchased the macbook pro with retina and now when I try to download files from the internet it takes 40+ plus minutes. I'm downloading small, less than 140 mb files. On my old macbook from 2008 it would take a few minutes. I did not pay 4,000 dollars to downgrade what is going on

Not using OpenDNS by any chance?  Using OpenDNS has caused issues as some Apple server access gets re-routed to slow servers (Akamai servers from memory).
