Why does it take hours to download movie

It takes 5-8 hours for me to download a movie either to purchase or rent, does anyone know who or how to fix this?

You most likely need a faster internet connection.  What do you get with a speedtest app?

    Hello allison224
Check out the articles below, it will give a starting point to troubleshooting the download speeds of a TV show form the iTunes Store.

  • Why does it take hours to download a movie on Apple TV?

Recently I rented a movie on Apple TV, but it took ~5 hours to download it to my chagrin. Is that normal? Later, I down loaded my second movie rental (3-hours), watched a portion, came back to resume viewing, and had to slowly down load it a second time. Wha' hoppened?

What is the actual speed of your conection (www.speedtest.net)
    8mbps required for instant 1080P
    6mbps for 720P
Check istumbler or netstumbler for network interference
Make sure you're on your ISPs DNS

  • Why does it take hours to download a rented movie from iTunes.

When I rent a movie or TV show from iTunes with my AppleTV (2), the download starts and I get a message saying the download will take an an hour and 45 minutes to download.  Then when the download it complete and I start to play it, I get a message saying downloading - and the rental never starts.
My AppleTV (2) it running the latest version, and it's plugged directly into my router via ethernet.  I have reset the Apple TV, router and modem.
Netflix  and YouTube streaming through AppleTV are immediate and seem to work fine.

What is your actual internet speed? use www.speedtest.net and post the results.
A sustained 6 Mbit/s or faster Internet connection is recommended for viewing High Definition movies and TV shows, and a sustained 2.5 Mbit/s or faster Internet connection is recommended for Standard Definition content. Internet connection speeds may vary depending on your ISP and other factors.
Using Netflix or Youtuve is not a good test as Youtube is must lower quality than HD rentals, and Netflix uses a variable quality download system that reduces quality based on your internet speed.

Why does it take hours to upload a tv show or movie purchased on iTunes all of sudden?

Would be due to your network
Check speedtest.net to verify current speed
Check istumbler.net or netstumbler to verify any interference
Make sure you are using ISPs DNS (settings - network - configure DNS - automatic)

  • Why does it take longer to download a movie than to watch it

why does it take longer to download a movie than to watch it???

Most likely reason is a slow internet connection.
Test is at speedtest.net on a computer, you need 6 Mbps for instant HD.

Assume you and 'jasonfrompasorobles' are the same person?    Otherwise not sure where Winston has replied to you.  Where has he suggested you're in the wrong forum ? (common practice to tell people if they are as you're more likely to get an answer in the correct forum.)
I refer you to Winston's first and only reply to jason... where he welcomed him to the forum - what is the download speed - measure it at speedtest.net on a computer.
Netflix works completely differently - it works out your internet speed and reduces the quality of the stream (accordingly so starts much quicker on slower connections by degrading the quality with a lower bitrate stream.
Apple's rentals are fixed sized files - HD 3-4GB, SD 1-1.5GB or thereabouts depending on film length - for fixed sized files with a given playback average bitrate/sec (Apple's tend to be up to 5 Mbps) if the connection speed is lower it is impossible to playback the movie instantly and continuously - it would stop and start all the time - so AppleTV calculates how much needs to buffer to allow the movie to be watched without stopping/starting - if your speed is very slow this could mean many hours for a HD title, and as TallBearNC suggests you can make some rough calculations to show why this happens.
Other factors could be at play but the first thing to look at is always the average download speed on your internet  connection.

  • Why does it take hours to sync and backup a 12GB data?

Does anyone know why it takes hours and hours to just sync and backup my 16GB iPhone 3GS before it installs the iOS5? This is getting rediculous! Why do Apple force us to use iTunes?

Shouldn't take that long although waiting a long time in between syncs can create longer backup times...  ie more data, apps, etc... to back up etc...  Make sure both iPad and iTunes are most current versions.  Make sure you are using the iPad sync cord that came with the device and not another from a iPhone or iPod.  Cables can screw up the deal.

  • Why does it take hours to import mp4 files into iMovie

I have some home movies I imported from VHS-C and compressed to mp4 files and now I want to start going through them in iMovie but it takes hours just to import a single clip (~575 meg).
What can I do to speed this up? Would getting a Mac Pro with loads of RAM and CPU's help? Would converting to a different video format before I import work?
Right now I have all this video I converted to digital and thus far spent days just importing and haven't been able to do anything with it yet!
I'm using an iMac core duo with 2 gig RAM and the upgraded video card (best one they had at the time).
    Any help is appreciated!

This worked fine for me, was exactly what I wanted.
1 - Create the project in iMovie HD and then save and close.
2 - Locate the file on your computer. Ctrl-click on the file and it will say "show package contents". Click on that.
3 - You will then see some folder items inside that. Open up "Media" and then drag and drop your mpeg file into it.
4 - When you reopen the project, you will be notified that there are files in your trash. You want to view them to find the file you just moved there.
5 - Take that file and drag it back onto the project and you're in.
    A major blessing!

  • Why does it take forever to download a clip from youtube or a movie its impossible to watch

When I try to download from youtube my mac takes forever only allowing a few min viewing at a time, same with movies and music clips

    Download 10.6.8 update
    run a speed test
    http://www.apple.com/support/networking
change your DNS to OpenDNS or something else
    Maybe your ISP throttles
If you use DSL and have DSL filters on phones, those things can fail and affect bandwidth and need to be replaced ($5-8)
then again, not knowng wired / wireless or Lion vs SL
Did it just start? why? what changed?

  • Why does it take forever to download a movie

Movie stops and starts constantly slow to download. Is there a solution. I have fast internet.

If you are using wifi, try connecting your Apple TV direct using an Ethernet cable.  Other than that, it's a simple large file/transfer rate/bottleneck/issue.  Even fast wifi has some interference causing slower file transfer.  On my Apple TV 2 I think I've noticed that the first time is the worst.

  • Why does my mac turn my downloaded movies into .m4v and move it to the desktop?

For about 4 or 5 months now I have had this problem. When I doenload a picture to my macs download file the computer converts the file to .m4v and moves it to the desktop, deleting the original download. Why? I dont know what I may have downloaded, it's been a while since this started.Thanks.

Why?  Because you told it to.
Remove whatever folder action you installed on your Downloads folder.  Right-click the folder, Services >> Folder Actions Setup.
If there's no folder action, then some piece of software you installed and have running is camping on your Downloads folder and doing the conversion.
Don't bother claiming you didn't... computer software isn't magic.  The machine didn't just decide to do this one day.

  • Why does it take hours to backup my iPad?

Why is it that when I try to back up my iPad the backup starts alright but after a short while it seems to grind to a halt. I have made it a habit to monitor the affected folder on my MacBook Pro and it is pretty clear that, although the backup indicator in iTunes keeps on spinning, the backup files remain unaffected after the halt. My present attempt, for example, has now been going on for two hours and 45 minutes without any indication of it coming to an end.
My solution to this slight inconvenience is to delete the backup file from within iTunes and create a completely new backup. This, however doable, is not too convenient because it takes some extra time to do this.
So what am I to do about this. Should I just patiently sit tight and hope for the backup to complete (hoping it will) at some undetermined future point in time? Or is there any other way of coming to grips with this?
