Why does itunes say that i have music on my iphone that i do not?

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help with this, its really doing my head in.
Until now, I've always deleted songs off my iphone using itunes on my pc. With the new ios and itunes update, I'm no longer able to do this.
The one thing that is annoying me the most is when connecting my iphone to my pc, I select my iphone and then On This Iphone. For some reason, its showing me songs that I don't have on my phone. There is no way for me to delete this information. I've checked my actual phone and the songs listed aren't actually on the phone but I was wondering if anyone could tell me why its telling me I have music that I don't.
Any suggestions?
Can anyone also tell me if there is a way to use itunes on my pc to delete songs off my iphone? Yes I know you can do it directly via the device but I want to know via itunes on a pc.
Thanks!

Yes, I also have an edit button.  I'm trying to create a new folder with a name of my choosing.  When I choose edit, I go to a screen that allows me to add one of a number of pre-named folders.  There is no way to add my own.
When I look up how to do it online, what I get are great instructions with screen shots that don't look like what I have on my iPhone.  There are also bars on the top and bottom of these screen shots that I don't have   I clearly do not have the same version.

iTunes says I have authorized five computers so I can no longer play music I have purchased. I have not replaced my computer once. Why does iTunes say this?

    Hey Christownsend,
Thanks for the question. To troubleshoot this issue, you may want to try deauthorizing all computers:
iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
To deauthorize all computers associated with your Apple ID
If you need to authorize your new computer and are unable due to already having five authorized computers, you can deauthorize all computers by doing the following:
    1. Click iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
    2. If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
    3. Click the Account button again (your Apple ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
    4. In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.
Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The Deauthorize All button will not appear if you have fewer than two authorized computers. If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact iTunes Store support via email (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/).
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Why does itunes say i have the latest version 4.2.1 (8c148) for my 3rd gen iPod touch when it should be iOS 5?

why does itunes say i have the latest version 4.2.1 (8c148) for my 3rd gen iPod touch when it should be iOS 5?

Be sure it is really a 3rd gen. Some people with 2nd gens were told they were 3rd gens.  Identifying iPod models or Look up specs by Serial Number. If it is a 2nd gen, then you can't upgrade.
IF IT REALLY IS A THIRD GEN iPod Touch, then you first need to upgrade to iTunes 10.5 in order to download iOS 5 because older versions of iTunes don't support and can't sync with iOS 5.

  • Why does itunes say the entry point is not found

why does itunes say it didn't install correctly and to reinstall?

Greg, did the "Patchburn" really work for you?
I had the same problem today. I have a smart playlist made up of: Kind>is>Protected AAC audio file. This smart play list allows me to keep track of music I've downloaded from the iTMS after inadvertently deleting the Purchased Music default playlist. Yes, I know a new “Purchased Music” playlist is created when you buy music again, but it doesn’t contain any of the songs you’ve already downloaded.
When I went to burn this playlist (several hundred songs) to multiple audio CD format - I go the same result you got.
"After asking to burn a play list it asks to insert CD, checks the media, checks the play list and then stops with the apple icon reappearing and NO error message."
Apple tech support couldn’t help me - I found that out the hard way - after 1.5 hours on the phone. No, I haven't exceeded the 7 time burn limit either.
I tried selecting all the songs in the smart playlist and creating a new [regular] playlist and tried to burn from that, but got the same result.
Finally, I tried typing "Protected AAC audio file" from my main library in the search window, selected all the songs that resulted, created a new [regular] playlist from that selection and the burn was successful.
It was a real pain and took almost 3 hours to figure out, but it worked. I'm going to try the "Patchburn" download talked about earlier, but don't know if that's the real problem.
Yes, I have upgraded my SuperDrive, but iTunes recognizes it - Preferences>Advanced>Burning - if your drive shows up here then that's not the problem. Besides, I had the same problem when trying to burn to the original SuperDrive too.
I think the problem may be deeper inside iTunes itself. Duh! Maybe something with Apple tightening their DRM scheme which may make us unwitting beta testers to see if they tightened the noose too tight or not. Just a guess.
    Any thoughts, anyone?

Of course, I have backed up to CD and/or external drive.
I'm wondering if you're attempting to maintain your library on your external HDD? If iTunes has been directed to use a location on your external hard drive as your iTunes Music Folder location (you can check this in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced tab) you MUST ensure that the hard drive is connected to the computer and mounted in the Finder prior to launching iTunes. If it isn't, it can cause this error to appear. This is probably one of the most common reasons this error begins to appear.
It seemed my purchased songs were the first to DISAPPEAR and I had to rebuy.(Nice scam in the bug?)
So... why not restore them from your backup? If, for some reason, this wasn't an option, you could have also recovered them from any iPod or iPhone they were currently synced to (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848), or, you can also email iTunes Store support and request a "regrant," which is a once-per-account exception they might be able to offer you and allow you to download missing purchases again.
I am now convinced this a HUGE BUG in 7.7.1. and possibly the previous version or two.
I'm not so sure... I've never run across this particular error (my library is stored on my internal hard drive, but copied to an external for backup purposes with an application other than iTunes or Finder. I don't think Apple will provide acknowledgment to issues experienced only by very small numbers of people... I'm one of those, perhaps foolish, individuals who allows my computer to download updates immediately, rather than waiting for fear of problems, and again, I've never had this error.

Why does iTunes say "temporarily unavailable" when I try download my "available downloads"? HELP!!

You don't have the typical symptoms that I associate the following issue with (normally the error kicks in just when folks visit the Store), but just in case try gn_id's suggestion from the following post:

  • I have music on my iPhone that is not on my Mac iTunes.  How do I transfer from the iPhone to the Mac?

I had an incomplete backup of my music on an external hard drive.  I had to have my hard drive replaced.  I now have music on my iPhone that is not on my MacBook Pro.  It is music that was not purchased from the iTunes store, but it was uploaded from a CD (which I no longer have).  How can I transfer music from my iPhone to my MacBook?

Turingtest2's user tip will help you with this.
Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • I have music on my iPhone that is not on my iTunes (mac)

I have music on my iPhone that is not on my iTunes (mac). I have unchecked all music and synced so iTunes doesn't see the music but when I go to my phone music is still there. The phone is running out of memory when I try to update apps due to this.
There appears to be about 3GB of music on my iPhone I cant remove

Purchased content from iTunes? If so, your phone connected, iTunes running: File>Transfer Purchases. Or, you can delete the music directly on your phone: swipe left-to-right across the song/album, hit "Delete".

  • HT201272 Why did I get charged for dowloading music to my iPhone that I already purchased?

Why did I get charged for dowloading music to my iPhone that I already purchased on my PC?

    Thanks for the response!
Since I only have one AppleID and since I'm sitting at the computer showing the previously purchased songs, I'm guessing your third response is the accurate.  I logged onto iTunes Store and "reported a problem" with the two songs and am awating their reply.
I'm guessing that it's something I did (or didn't do) when I downloaded the songs from iTunes Store to my iPhone.  I forgot to synch these two songs from my PC to my iPhone before travelling.  However, I noticed that the two songs were listed on my iPhone iTunes application in a playlist called "recently purchased."  I clicked on the two songs and they were downloaded to my iPhone (which I would expect); I then received an email receipt for the charges for the songs (which I didn't expect.)

  • Why does itunes say i have over 700 photos on my phone but i really only have about 200?

I have a 4S running 8.1.1  and on itunes when i connect my phone it says i have 700+ pictures when in reality by camera roll has less than 200. I am connected to ICloud but I turned off all settings in the "Photos" section of the Icloud settings. I did sync all my photos that are on my phone on to IPhoto on my computer. Does ITunes count the pictures on IPhoto on my computer and my Camera roll to make over 700+ photos? That is the best guess i have and i think is unlikely. Help!

  • Why does itunes say that my iphone has 9GB of video data even though I've deleted every video I've ever made

    Hello,
When I use itunes on my macbook to view the contents of my iphone 5, the bar at the bottom of the window that shows me how much data is taken up for different categories says that I have 9 GB of video data. The thing is, I deleted all of the videos that I've ever recorded on my phone, but itunes still says I have 9.15 GB of video data! I ejected my iphone and plugged it back in multiple times to see if it was a problem with refreshing, but that didn't work. Itunes also says that I only have about 3 GB of free space left and when I go to the settings on my iphone, it says the same thing, so I know that there really are mysterious files on my iphone taking up 9 GB of space. Also, both itunes and my iphone says that I have 83 video files. I've deleted as much apps as I could, just incase there were apps that had video files included in them, but that didnt really work. I also opened the video app in utilitties on my iphone and it said that I do not have ANY videos. I don't really know what else to do.
Is there any way to just see all of the files on my iphone? Itunes does not let me do that. It only lets me view certain files from apps like adobe reader. I need to find out what video files itunes is detecting on my iphone. Again, I've deleted all of the videos that I made on the phone by using the photos app. I never downloaded video files from safari either.
    Thanks in advance

since moving to the mac from windows, this seems to happen less. I also found that having some videos marked as "remember playback position" resulted in a lot of updates to the ipod when i had watched them through itunes.

  • Why does iTunes allow you to play music files that are in the trash?

I recently was up grading my music library why I got my new mac.  I had 2 I tunes libraries on my computer and checked to see which one I was using and deleted the other music folder.  While the folder was in the trash I played the music to make sure that I would not have a problem...... then I empted the trash.  Problem was that after emptining the trash I could not play the music anymore.  so my question is is there a way to set up a preference to not allow I-tune to not allow access to files in the trash.

If an iPod is set to automatically sync from a particular iTunes library, when you connect it to that iTunes library, every song on the iPod exists in the iTunes library.  Therefore, if you want to play a song on the iPod using iTunes on the computer, you can just play that song from the computer's iTunes library, and not the iPod.
If an iPod is set to load songs manually (by dragging songs to the iPod in iTunes), then the iPod is NOT syncing to a particular iTunes library.  The library on the iPod is separate; songs on the iPod may not be in the computer's iTunes library.  Therefore, you can play songs stored on the iPod using iTunes on computer.
If your shuffle happens to be 1st or 2nd gen, they work differently from other iPods.   They are always associated with only one iTunes library at a time, so you cannot play songs on the shuffle using iTunes on the computer.
I was wondering how I could transfer music from my iPod to my library
You cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

  • Why does iTunes say I have two different total numbers of movies?

On the sidebar, it lists 371 Movies. When I'm in Movies with everything listed, the number at the bottom next to total number of hours is 372 Movies. 372 Movies is the correct number of movies. I have all of those movies also loaded into iTunes on my laptop running 10.7. These are all movies which are hosted locally on a hard drive; none of them are iCloud downloads or matches. So why does it think I have 1 less movie on the side bar? Is there a way to find out if one particular film hasn't loaded properly or can't be read for some reason? Thanks

The sidebar lists # of unplayed (not completed) items.
They should have a blue dot (not played) or half blue dot (started but not completed) next to the name.
