Why does Launchpad constantly re-order my apps?

I installed Lion several days ago but only last night took the time to configure my applications in Launchpad.  I set up some folders and moved things around to be organized.  To be honest, this feature is heaven for me!
But over the past 24 hours, I've encountered a strange problem.  Everytime I reboot my iMac, the set order I organized all of my apps to apear in keep re-ordering and mixing up on me.  I don't know how or why this is happening but it has to be a bug of sorts.
I have 24 apps/folders on my first Launchpad page, which is all of my primary apps and folders that I use regularly.  The other two pages are folders and apps that I probably won't ever need to launch from there.   I set all of my web browsers and internet related apps on the bottom row.  Design apps on the next row up.  Music and audio editing apps the next row up from there and my regularly used system utilities, calculator, app store, etc. on the top row.
Well, all of my apps maintain what row they're set to - but the bottom two rows are always re-ordering when I reboot my machine.  I haven't changed, updated or added any new applications, yet by doing an experiment a moment ago, I set my apps the way I wanted to, did nothing else, rebooted my machine and went back to Launchpad.  It still re-orders itself.  I did this 4 times in a row and it's the same result each time.  And the same way the apps are re-rdered too.  It's not setting them alphabetically either so I don't have a clue as to what is happening.
Anybody else experiencing this?   I guess it's not a huge deal since all of the apps are still there - but I'm a little OCD and when I set my apps to where the 8 most commonly used apps are in the center 2 rows and suddenly they're mixed up, it kind of makes this new feature almost pointless.  Would rather just double click a folder on my desktop to have it open the apps/aliases I want.

Definitely seeing this myself. Not sure what process is doing it, but it would have to be changing the IDs of each item in Launchpad on each relaunch of the "Dock" process (since the whole thing is controlled by an SQL Lite database in your ~/Library/Application Support/Dock folder). It could be looking at the last "something'd" date and ordering them based on that.
Crazy idea, maybe try write-protecting that database after everything is as you'd want it? Trouble is, next time you download or install an app that Launchpad would want to add, you'd need to un-write-protect it, add the app, then re-write-protect it. Scriptable, sure, but not "It just works". And even then it might not like the database not being modifyable and just crash or act oddly.
I haven't given it much effort as my primary app launch method is still Spotlight. If you want your apps to stay in order, just drag your Applications folder back to your dock and use it just like you did in [Snow] Leopard, as they'll stay in the sort order you set it there. Or submit a bug report (http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html) and hope they fix it in a future release. Finally, for those who want to use Launchpad and fix it themselves, may I suggest this:
Get your apps in the order you want them
Back up the database in ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock to somewhere
Write a simple bash or Apple script that kills the Dock, copies that archived database where everything is in the correct order to its "live" location, then restarts the Dock
Set said script to run on boot by adding it to your Startup Items (Accounts in System Preferences)
Profit?
Of course, anytime you make an edit to what's in Launchpad or the order of Launchpad, you'd need to remember to re-backup your database so this script wouldn't overwrite your edits the next time you rebooted.
*The above idea has not been tested and merely should work given that Mac OS is nearly UNIX and as such usually behaves rationally

  • Why does Apple keep breaking the podcast app?

Why does Apple keep breaking the podcast app?

Here are my issues, maybe you can help... And yes "breaking" and "nightmare" are accurate descriptions of this update...
    1. Syncing is now impossible without WiFi or a Cellular connection. I've tried your guide in the other thread, but it didn't help.
When I sync podcasts with iTunes, they DO NOT SHOW UP in the app unless I connect my iPhone 5S to WiFi or Cellular. As soon as I connect it to something, new episodes that I manually synced finally show up and can be played.
    2. Arranging the podcasts in any order is now pointless. Any sort of wireless connection will reset my order to a randomized one. It's not even "podcasts with the newest episodes on top", it's just random.
    3. Apple doesn't seem to allow any other podcast app to use the manual sync in iTunes. Am I wrong about that? I looked at countless paid apps and they all have their own cloud or system to only deliver episodes wirelessly...
    4. And that constant prompt about Cellular data access could drive anyone insane!
I have never been this frustrated with an Apple product in my life...

First thing to try is a reboot of your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appear. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.

Blackberries were designed at a time when cellular data was very expensive. They don't do nearly as much as an iPhone, in part, to conserve data use. All modern smartphones will use more data than a Blackberry unless you do almost nothing.
You do not need to quite apps. Almost no apps run in the background.
Here are Apple's tips on iPhone battery use:

If you are really only getting an hour of battery usage and not just engaging in hyperbole (), you should make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store.

  • Why does Calendar keep opening my Mail.app to send me email notifications?

Why does Calendar keep opening my Mail.app to send me email notifications? I've disabled any settings that look like they could be used to sending me an alert. I've also read that disabling the email alerts in gmail would also help (since I use 3 gmail calendars in addition to my icloud calendar). Any ideas on how I might fix this issue?

Maybe this will help. If you monitor the "More Like This" box, other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.

  • I cannot install apps that are upgraded to ios4.. im using iphone 2g 3.1.3 this makes me sad.. why does apple need to updates many apps when we cannot update an iphone 2g anymore..

i cannot install apps that are upgraded to ios4. im using iphone 2g 3.1.3 this makes me sad.. why does apple need to updates many apps when we cannot update an iphone 2g anymore..

I am having the exact same problem with trying to sync my iPad with my computer. To make a long story short, I had to reinstall Windows for my computer and therefore had to reinstall itunes.
I have done back ups in the past for my ipod touch and other ipods with no problems, but unfortunately I have never been able to back up my iPad. During a sync, the iPad would always disconnect from my computer and it would never finish. it would say the connection was lost, but nothing is wrong with the connection.
So now I have over 100 apps and thousands of pictures that I am afraid will be deleted if I run the sync in itunes. I have tried to transfer purchases and it goes through the list of apps, but nothing is ever transferred.
Any help would be appreciated. I am not interested in jailbreaking my iPad to solve this problem. There should be a fix for this and I want to upgrade to ios 4.3 as the original poster. Please help

Why does my 4s just close an app all of the sudden and the apple logo will come up like it's shutting down but doesn't it will go to lock screen after that.

It's definitely a crash. I'd maybe look into reinstalling the operating system.

Make sure you back up first though.

  • Why does bridge constantly re-create previews?

My understanding is that Bridge generates previews and stores them in the cache.  However, it seems to forget it created the previews when I shut down then boot up the next day, so directories that I visited the day before still get the "XXX preview extractions" notice down in the bottom left and the interface is sluggish while that is going on.
I have tried purging the cache, compacting the cache, and putting the cache size on maximum.  Bridge still constantly generates previews for items that should already be in the cache.  I have "Keep 100% Previews in Cache" checked, so it shouldn't be doing that, correct?
How do I fix this problem?  It makes Bridge even more sluggish than it already is...
    Thanks,

  • Why does Adobe constantly wants to Update itself?

Why does Adobe Acrobat Reader constantly wants to Update itself by presenting an irritating dialog box that asks the user to update?
It's just a document reader - how many times do you want to update it? Why aren't all bugs/features added before it is released?
If you really want to update everyday, why can't you do it on the sly?

The latest version is 9.3.1 and it's been out for a little while now.
Your update didn't go right, or it would recognize the latest version and the updater would shut down before asking you to update.
Try uninstalling Reader and downloading the latest build. I doubt it will be asking you to update all the time after thet.

  • Expert help needed: why does my apple id show in app store....

when I never signed into the app store before... and... it's not even my system...
    OK...story...
On my clients iMac who is running os 10.5.8 and wishes to uprgade to 10.8, I did the following:
-installed 10.6 from my image of the 10.6 installer disc on my utility firewire hd
-after upgrade, I ran software update and installed the 10.6.8 combo update
-after reboot went to app store(1st time it has been used) and attempted to purchase & upgrade the OS to 10.8 and noticed in the Store menu that my apple Id was there???
    um….
how did it get there??? So what I then did was:
-have my client enter his apple id & paswd and sign in
-when he attempted to purchase then download, a warning appeared - (not exact) 'downloads for the acct <myappleid> are waiting to be downloaded, please complete the downloads before…(wish I made a screen shot)
The only way around this was to sign back into my apple id and allow mountain lion to download and install.
    Anyways…
I had him sign into the app store on another mac and mountain liion was not in his list of purchases, but that didn't surprise me.
What is completely a mystery is why my apple id made it's way into his app store when it was never there before, I mean the system was at 10.5. prior...I'm baffeled
This is the second time this has happened, 1st time it was when bringing a a client of mine from 10.5.8 to 10.7 with the same steps as above….
    Does anyone have a clue??

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
I would guess that your Apple ID is in the pirated version of Snow Leopard 10.6 that you are installing on their computers to allow them to update to Mountain Lion.

  • Why does LaunchPad show some of my applications to be in folders that just don't exist?

I had a crap ton of apps in my Applications folder, and I just noticed that in LaunchPad many of those applications are grouped in 'folders' that simply don't exist as subfolders of my Applications folder.  Is there a limit on the number of screens that LaunchPad can have?  if so, this might explain the organizational compression.
Below is a screenshot of what I'm seeing.  In the top row, there are a bunch of 'Script Debugger 4.5.6' folders that just plain don't exist in my Applications folders.  And yet LaunchPad shows them holding a bunch of apps.  Those apps ought to appear along with all the other non-foldered apps on my system.
Am I doing something wrong?  This is pretty much a stock system, right now.  It was set up using migration assistant with a 10.6 system.
Thanks for any advice on 'fixing' (or 'coping with') this that people can shoot my way.
    Jason

run this script in terminal. It will reset to the default (it funtions like the reset homepage layout funtion in IOS)
    rm ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db

  • Why does my ipad suddenly leave the app I am using and go back to the main screen

When I am using apps on my ipad it suddenly leaves the app and reverts to the main screen, does anyone know why this happens?? Is it a problem with the ipad?? Doesn't happen with any particular app, seems to affect all apps. And it doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes, very annoying. Any ideas as to what could be going on

This is typically a memory issue - meaning, you have too many apps running. You don't mention your device and iOS version so it's difficult to say. Try this...
Double click the Home button and close all open apps.
Reset your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.
