Why does lightroom 3.3 delete files it 'fails' to move? and why does it fail?

I'm in the process of moving a bunch of images around between machines, so from a remote machine I copied 10gb or so of .cr2, .jpg and .thm files into a temporary holding location on a local sata drive. I then started an import on the machine from the temporary holding location to the location I wanted the files at (which is a drive different than the temporary location). Lightroom trundled along for quite a while. Then reported to me that it had failed to move some files (The list was ALL the files).
I went to look at the temporary holding location on the boot drive and all the files were gone. I looked at the location I tried to import them to, and they were in fact there. HOWEVER they were not added to the catalog in lightroom!

Greetings..
I'm not sure what you mean by "force LR to import..."
It all depends on your work flow, and how you use LR, not any forcing.  For example, I use keywords and collections.  I organize my photos in the _folders_ by the method I mentioned.  Then use collections to make up my groupings and sorted images.  As for importing, every photograph taken has at least the date taken in it, and LR import options have a lot of different ways to use that date to import them.  I selected one that works for me, and then just have to select the MajorProject as the toplevel folder on the import destination.  LR creates all of the underlying folders.
I then use the Move option, and LR will move all of my images from the source directory into the destination.  Note:  This will not work from a portable drive, due to LR not being allowed to delete images from portable disks.  You'd have to use Copy, and delete the originals after you've seen them in their new home.
Just out of curiosity, is there any reason you renamed your files, or was that a byproduct of how you did it?  I try not to rename my images, if possible.  I know that having multiple images with the same name causes some problems with a few export modules (I updated one, and had to recreate my export collection.  It took the first file by that name it found, which, of course, turned out not to be the correct image).
The key here of course, is to keyword your images.  I now have several ways to search for images;  those taken by date, by project, and of course by keywords.
Cheers!

It's not Mac, it is iTunes, especially the recent version.

Why is the sound of my new ipad cutting out intermittently and what does Apple recommend to solve the problem in lieu of any updates? All of a sudden without changing any settings, the audio on my NEW ipad cuts in and out on applications/ games, keypad noise and lock sounds. The rocker button only seems to work while the sound is intermittently being heard before, after a few seconds of noise not doing anything when sound goes off.
This is highly frustrating as I've noticed others posting about such issues as far back as April. Anybody had the same thing happen to them? Is this likely software (ios6) or hardware issue? What are the solutions Apple???

Apple has no physical stores of their own in Dubai, so unless you mean that you purchased from the online Apple Store for the UAE, you purchased from a dealer, who may or may not have been authorized. You can check the expiration date of the warranty on your iPad yourself by entering in the serial number here:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
If it does indeed show the warranty has expired, then what you need to do from here will depend on who you purchased the iPad from and when you really did purchase it. Perhaps you actually purchased it in August and are just misremembering? Check your receipt. If you confirm that you did purchase within the last calendar year, tell us exactly where you got it and we can probably offer advice.

  • Lightroom doesn't delete files.

I have latest drivers and versions of everything... running lightroom on latest Intel iMac and Intel MacBook.
I am not sure wether this applied to Lightroom 1 as I never noticed it... but with version 1.1 it does not seem to "Delete from Disk" in the Photos, Delete option... the RAW file is still on my hard drive.
    Anyone else experience this?

If you have 20 minutes... here is why I found that I was unable to delete or move folders or images when I first started using Lightroom.
The deletion problem turned out to be the result of two missed (or wrongly checked) options when splitting up my original catalog and exporting it into two smaller catalogs.
I am aggravated at myself that I screwed up and let it happen -- but I think Lightroom's explanation of the options when importing/exporting catalogs could be clearer and have some warnings of the potential for massive problems...
Here is what happened to me:
I exported and created 2 catalogs from my very large initial catalog. I had always imported all of my image files "at current location" and the imports often included files that I really did not need to show in Lightroom. Files that were buried in the root folders from a shoot along with the raws and older high quality jpg, tif or psd images that I wanted imported in Lightroom. This became a drag as I found a lot of "duplicate images" with the same filenames - many that were of low resolution images that had been created in various web galleries and the like over the years. I soon realized I had some 24,000+ images and with probably 20% of those being low resolution images that I wanted to delete from Lightroom.
I decided that maybe splitting up the large catalog in 2 catalogs - one for Personal and one for Photoshoots -- would be a good place to start in managing my already imported images. In many cases I had already ran many of the images through the Development module and created .tif edits and wanted to make sure everything I had done was also imported into the new catalogs.
It looks like I misunderstood Lightroom's options and while creating the new catalogs I unintentionally exported the original image files (called "negative files"?) with the exports -- creating duplicates of all images (!) and their folder structure that was in my initial catalog and placing them in the Lightroom catalog folders.
Not realizing what I did, I dove in to the new catalogs and began going through and removing Gigs of unwanted files both from Lightroom and from disk, rating images and doing color and contrast corrections. I worked on many images ( hundreds for sure )
It was not until my computer backup gave me the error message that my "disk was full" did I think anything was out of whack. It was strange as I had deleted so much and had carefully deleted them in the exact method required by Lightroom (in Folders, remove from disk etc.) to make sure they were also deleted on disk.
I checked my original files and saw that my deletions had not taken.... They were mostly still there... and most of my folder moves did not take place either! I was baffled. Then I though, OK... but, that still would not account for my 500GB disk filling up so quick -- I did not even consider the two problems were related. I decided to find out where the meat was... XP does not give good folder size info and I have hundreds of folders on my system so I downloaded a Folder Size program and set it up..
I was shocked to see that my Lightroom folder now was larger than my original images folder!!! When I looked into the Lightroom folders I found the duplicate folder tree with all the duplicate images! At first I still didn't understand why... only after a lot of head scratching, researching and doing test imports, deletes, and moves, and rehashing my situation, and all possibilities about them, did the actual cause for everything become clear to me...(no answers from the adobe board had close to an answer as no one except me, I guess, could ever get themselves so turned around!)
Only the new imports were deleting from my original files location... All the images in the new catalogs were deleting images from their own sets of dedicated image files... in the Lightroom folder! which I had not know were created or existed... :-( Yikes... I had done a "Show in Explorer" more than a few times, but was apparently so deep in my folder structure that I never noticed that it all sat in the Lightroom folder and not in my My Pictures folder where I thought the images were being accessed (and deleted from)
This made for a big confusing mess.
The reason it appeared that some files deleted and others did not was because I had imported hundreds of new images into the new catalogs and had alway imported them "in their original location" so they were only in the original file structure and they deleted fine.... but all the ones from the catalogs I had created (when I checked that "include original negatives") did not delete in the original file structure -- however they were deleting in the Lightroom catalog folders where they were duplicated... making me think some files deleted or moved while others did not.... [sigh]
Sooo... rather than trying to figure out how to get back to having my master files only in their original location, and still be able to keep all of the changes that I have made in the new Catalogs -- including knowing which ones I had deleted in the new Catalogs and old catalogs along with the folder structure changes and all... I just "bit the bullet" -- and wrote all that time and work off....[double sigh] I went back to my backups from just before I split out the new catalogs... and pretended those days of work on the new catalogs was never done...
I re-split the one original catalog from my earlier backup and making sure I didn't include the "negative files" created the new catalogs and went back to editing and deleting....kind of like pretending it never happened....
So now everything seems a bit DejaVu... but boy am I getting a lot of practice with my Lightroom shortcuts. :-)
I will never make that mistake again.

  • Lightroom 5 wont delete files

So I recently just upgraded from Lightroom 4 to LR 5. Whenever I go to permanently delete files from my hard drive, I get a message saying "The files are on a volume that does not support Trash. Would you like to permanently delete them?"  I click the button that says permanently delete files and it does delete them but it starts me back at the begin of the files im working on. Before I upgraded I never got this message and when I permanently deleted them, it would keep me in the same place on the files I was working on.

It is a funny thing on some drives. I have seen this and if I recall the solution was to create a folder on the drive with Lightroom and then remove it again with Lightroom.

  • When i add a book, music or video to ipad via itunes it keeps trying to add deleted files on the ipad previously. Why?

No major problem, just takes a lot of unecessary time. Whenever i do either of the following functions of adding a video, book, or a music file. Itunes keeps checking for the previously deleted files on the ipad and i dont know why. My problem is that if i just want to add ONE single file i will take more time because it does that silly thing. Any suggestion why this happens and how can be fixed?
    My current settings are:
(TICK) Prevent ipad from syncing automatically,
(TICK) Manually manage music and videos,

If it's any consolation i've just had a similar thing happen. Went to add a playlist and it wiped 35 gig of music off my iPod touch 64g in a nanosecond. I've got the latest iTunes and osx but do not back up because i keep different styles of music (and loads of it) in separate libraries and devices which i don't want mixed together. All my stuff is burned from cd so it's not lost for good and i've got a hard drive with the "lost" mp3 music on it but even so it will take literally weeks to prune the tracks for my iPod to be the same again. Why do they make it so difficult to manage your music on these things. I have massive amounts of music on my computer so autofill is a disastrous unusable gimmick to me. The whole thing seems to be aimed at 9 year old kids with about 6 mp3's on their phone rather than serious music lovers (for example accessing EQ is a joke let alone the lack of a manual option). I'm a dj and use apple for that reason but to be honest i'm beginning to wonder why. I'm absolutely livid. The weird thing is that my mac still shows the titles of the missing tunes in the 'on my device' window but as my macbook storage display shows no increase i'm pretty sure it's all gone. Nightmare. I have no confidence in this device anymore and could barely use the previous osx 8.2 anyway. Why they have to change it every ten minutes is beyond me. As the old saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but this format just gets more broken every time they update. An absolute disgrace. Why not just drag and drop or delete. No wonder the iPod is said to be a dying device, it's for music, it is not a phone. Not fit for purpose anymore. I can't be bothered to read a massive 'how to use' article every update. Good technology should be easier and more intuitive with each new version. I suppose i'll have to phone apple at my expense to find out what's going on, or maybe that's the whole idea. Very very very not happy.

  • Does any one know what the matrix.dms is? And why it is in my picture folder? When I open this file the unarchiver takes over and I see my entire hard drive when I scroll down I see the matrix.dms file with in the unarchiver.

Hello everyone. Does anyone know that the matrix.dms file is? And why it may have came to be in my picture folder? When I opened the file the unarchiver took over, then I saw my files in the unarchiver window. I then scrolled down and I saw the same matrix.dms file within the unarchiver window. I made a video of what saw when I tried to open the file, so as to aide in your understanding of reason for my perplexion at this file. • How or why would Lightroom replace my jpeg files with duplicate raw (.ORF)?

    Greetings All,
I'm new to Lightroom but I'm trying to dive in head first and learn as much as I can in a short period.  I historically shoot RAW + jpeg with an Olympus PEN EPL3.  In an effort to keep the files separated I created a RAW subfolder in the parent folder, moved the RAW files into the subfolder, leaving the jpegs in the parent folder.  I should point out that the RAW and associated jpeg still had the same identical file name given by the camera. The obvious difference being the file extension.  This was all done prior to importing.  After importing all seemed OK. I could see both files in the parent folder and hovering over each with the mouse showed one as a .ORF and the other as a .JPEG.  And the subfolder showed only the .ORF files.
After flagging some files rejected and deleting them and flagging some to keep, at some point the JPEGS were replaced with identical, additional copies of the RAW files.  So when viewing the parent folder instead of a RAW and JPEG side by side in the library, I had two RAW files and no JPEG.  So my question for everyone is what did I do that might have caused this?  And just so you know, I plan to only import RAW files into Lightroom in the future.  As I struggle to get my head wrapped around a complete overhaul on how I manage my photos, I'm beginning to see the light.  I'll still shoot both RAW and JPEG but shoot smaller JPEGS for emailing, etc. while on vacation or quickly after a shoot and only import the RAW files for later editing, eventually dumping all of the JPEGS to create new selected ones form my RAW edits.
So although I don't think I'll ever have the conditions again needed to reproduce my experience, I would like to try to have an understanding of it, if possible.  Any suggestions or advice are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    MrCakes

All good stuff, thanks again.  But I may have inferred I'm more a newbie than I actually am.  By short amount of time I mean several weeks. I've utilized these and sat in two workshops so far (underwater photo editing). I realize its still just scratching the surface. I'm still keeping at it, even if I have to chalk this up to gremlins. I'll keep at it.
