Why does Lion seem slower than Snow Leppard?

It's anyone's guess.  Startup and shutdown as well as application launches take longer in Lion than they did in Snow Leopard on the three Macs that I "upgraded," and I also see the spinning beach ball more often than I used to.  Add to that the HDMI-related crashes on my Mac mini...
Quite frankly, I have yet to see where I have gained any advantages after upgrading to Lion, and I definititely have problems that I didn't have under Snow Leopard.  Of course, all of it must be my fault, as Apple would never ever relase an upgrade that was less than perfect.

  • Why does Lion run slower than Snow Leopard?

I recently loaded Lion on my older MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo, with 4 GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. and it runs slower and the it seems to be hotter and consume more battery power. Are the configuration option that can reduce the power drain?

You may have some mildly-incompatible third-party software, or you may be doing tasks that demand a lot of RAM and 4 GB is no longer enough on a system that has double the memory requirements of SL.  Or could be something else entirely.  Take a look at Understanding upgrade nightmares* for more information and some potential solutions.

  • Lion runs slower than Snow Leopard

We called about our very new Power Mac with 12 cores. We are running Maple on that machine, and less than 2.4% of one CPU is used for our calculations in the Lion 10.7.4 windows mode. The last advisor advised us to install Snow Leopard on the new machine.
We tried that as we had bought a family pack of MacOSX 10.6.3 some time ago and used that for two older machines. But the new machine complained that the installation can not be performed as this version apparently uses a fat binary.
We have also contacted Maplesoft, and they believe that Java and the GUI in Lion may cause the delay in the calculations. They advised us to run in Command Line mode using the nohup feature (In Terminal ending the UNIX command by &). We have tried this and found CPU use of 100% and even higher in parts where parallel processing was used. However,  running in the Command Line version of Maple is not attractive, as it takes away most of the interactive response with the program and produces results in linear form that are hard to read.
An old small 2 core PowerBook on which Snow Leopard runs is now our top machine, as long as the problem on the brand new machine is not resolved.
Do you have any further suggestion? We have wasted a lot of time and money on the new Power Mac so far.

Power Mac? Do you mean Mac Pro? Power Macs aren't capable of running anything higher than Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard because Snow Leopard and Lion are Intel-only.

  • Why does Lion need to be rebooted more than Snow Leopard?

After upgrading to Lion I have noticed that I need to reboot Lion  more often than Snow Leopard. Is this just me or is this something others have seen?

I think this is just you. Nevertheless I would install the 10.7.1 update if you have not yet done so. This will improve the stability of Lion somewhat. But before you do that I would reinstall Lion. You may find this will improve things quite a bit especially if you upgraded from Snow Leopard. This will not erase the drive so you won't lose any of your files.
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

Why does Lion KEEP reversing changes you make in address book and other applications without your consent and without wanting it to??? Plus address book will NOT import old address book contacts from Snow Lepoard 10.6 and keep them.  This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. I am NOT happy with this OS7 it has a lot of issues and faults.  How can one stop automatic reversing of data when inputting???
    Please help!
Wished I NEVER upgraded to this Lion!!!
    Carmelo

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
    Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

Why is Mac OS X 10.7 so much slower than Snow Leopard? It isnt smooth, applications are slow and most dont respond, and dowloads take hours, not minutes.

Something is seriously wrong with your installation or you are critically low on RAM, like below 2 GB.
How much RAM is in your machine?
    Have you tried a Recovery?

  • Why is my OSX lion upgrade slower than my snow leopard?

    Hey Everyone,
    I run a
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
and every since I upgraded from snow leopard to lion. Everything on my computer seems slower. Just very laggy and not in shape like my last operating system....Anyone else having this problem? What can I do, .....Downgrade?
    Thanks in advance

2GB memory is quite low for Lion. i consider 4GB a good amount for users without special memory requirements.
you can see how much memory is free using Activity Monitor. if the number is often small (e.g. less than 10% physical memory), then a memory upgrade would improve your Lion experience.
my needs are sort of high. even with 8 GB i still find myself going out of my way to free memory.

  • Why does lion use so much memory?

Why so much memory usage in Lion?  Have 8GB in Lion 10.7.2 (waiting on 7.3 until I can be assured it won't hose everything) and keep running out of memory without having anything but a browser open.  Currently do not have anything in background except a clipboard manager and am running Safari with 6 primarily text-based tabs--total memory usage:  2.63GB.  Comparable memory usage in Snow Leopard was around 900MB.  Have had memory climb up to all installed memory, though at that time I did have about twenty tabs open, some with Flash and othe multi-media, but, still, did not have comparable problems with Snow Leopard.  What gives?  Memory freeing and reclamation does not seem to be working efficiently either.  Have used Purge and FreeMemory to some benefit, but there seems to be something deeply wrong with the pool of inactive memory.  Also, either the kernal, or some other vital core piece of the OS, gets transferred out to Virtual Memory when the memory usage gets above 6GB...then machine crawls and I have to reboot.  Very unhappy, not sure I should have given up my Windows 7 machines for the Mac...they screamed speedily and had none of these problems.
Very disappointed with so much about Lion.  Only reason I upgraded from Snow Leopard was to get the vaunted hardware gains when running VMWare Fusion 4.  Other aspects are very bad--lots of crashes, software incompatibilities, lots of beachballs, generally sluggish performance, will not start screensaver, will not sleep, will not shut down properly--have to use power button...goes on and on....then death-dealing problems with 10.7.3 update...all going to **** now that Steve Jobs has moved on to other duties?  Trying to convince myself it will all work out, but not sure...trying to devise a de-migration path back to Snow Leopard that will not take me a hundred hours to implement.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab. Select All Processes from the popup menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Now select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log – the text, please, not a screenshot. If there are repeats, please post only one example of each repeated message.

  • Why does Photoshop keep slowing down?

I've been using Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 for two years now, and for some reason it seems to have the problem of slowing down after using it for a while, so if I'm working on a project I have to keep closing it and reopening it to get it fast again. It's weird because it doesn't seem to matter how much stuff is on the canvas, it's just how much I've drawn and hit undo and erased or did anything, After like 5 minutes of straight work it just gets too slow for me to work in, like when I switch tools or change the color it takes a couple seconds to respond. So literally every couple minutes I have to restart Photoshop and open the same file.
What's really odd is that sometimes Photoshop will work perfectly fine and stay lightning fast for hours. Like, for the last couple of months it's been 100% fine, but since a few days ago it started to have this "slowing down" issue again. Every couple months it seems to decide to be perfectly fine or just really annoying. I didn't change anything in my computer.
It can't be my computers specs or my settings in Photoshop, but I will tell you all of that anyway.
    OS - Windows 7 64-bit
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
    RAM - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz

There is no malware scanner running, in fact I have tried closing out all other applications and unnecessary processes to help improve performance. No luck.
Also, my post actually wasn't quite finished, but my internet shut off on me last night and I guess that just automatically posted whatever I had done before then. What's even better is that the forums won't allow me to edit it. What great features!
Anyway, here's the FULL spec sheet of my computer...
    OS - Windows 7 64-bit
    CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
    RAM - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
    GPU - NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1GB
    Storage - 1x 128GB SSD (OS installed on), 1x 750GB HDD, 1x 160GB HDD
I have the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.1 Extended, installed on the SSD. Here's the settings I have in the preferences:
    Memory Usage - 100%
    Scratch Disks - All 3, SSD 1st, 750GB HDD 2nd, 160GB HDD 3rd
    History States - 100
    Cache Levels - 8
    Cache Tile Size - 1028K
I have fiddled with these settings and restarted Photoshop countless times. In the end it's the same exact result: Photoshop slows down after a few minutes of work and I have to restart it. I have about 50GB free on the SSD, 150GB free on the 750GB, and about 140GB free on the 160GB.
I don't understand why it gets so slow even when my RAM usage only makes it up to about 45%. Why doesn't it just utilize ALL of the memory like I told it to?
I've tried setting cache to 1, 2, and 4, same result. Cache tile size to all the different settings, same result. History states to an extremely low level like 10, same result. I just don't understand why Photoshop is doing this, especially because it decides to speed up on its own every couple of months...

  • Why does my Macbook slow down every 4-5 seconds?

I am a big gamer nerd, and recently i have been moving over from x-box to computer.
I have recently noticed when i am playing high graphics games, or any game that takes a good amount of graphics, my computer seems to slow down alot every few seconds.
For Minecraft, i can play it on all the best settings and it will run perfectly fine for 3 seconds, then i get about 8 fps for one second and it repeats. It gets really annoying especially when it is in an intense moment, (or when it makes me fall into lava) This also becomes a big concern on games like Left 4 Dead, it makes these games (that my computer CLAIMS it can handle perfectly) almost unplayable.
This seems to become more apparent as my computer heats up.
Why does my computer do this? and Is there a way to make it stop?

Good that "big gamer nerds" are starting to use the Mac.  Not long ago, there were hardly any good games around.  Going backwards, yes, it's going to make the MBP run hotter.  It's using the max amount of everything running.
To really help you, we would need the exact model of MBP.  For example, if you have 15 or 17", you need to make sure you're running with the discrete video card (nvidia or AMD) instead of the integrated Intel version (which is good enough for TV viewing and web browsing).  Also, you need to make sure you maximize memory.  When I play a game (I only play Starcraft), I shut down all other programs, especially anything that runs in the background (like a twitter feed, though that really doesn't use too many resources).  You can use Activity Monitor (it's in your Utility folder) to see what's sucking resources on your computer.
Remember, the game companies want to sell as many games as possible.  So they give computer spects that will just barely run the game if you tweak every setting.  You want to be way over the minimum settings in processor speed, memory, disk space etc.
Minecraft has known framerate issues on the Mac port of the game.  It has nothing to do with you, your Mac, or anything, but the quality of code from the developer.

  • Using new Extreme N in mixed environment, seems slower than plain old G...

I got a new Extreme N couple days ago. Installed it as the main base, with an older Airport Extreme and an Express as WDS stations.
My MacBook Pro does not have N hardware in it (grrrr, don't get me started . But my wife's MacBook does. I got the N because I really want a networked hard drive and figured we'll all have N at some point.
I understand that the network speed gets knocked down to G speed if there are non N clients on it. However, I swear it seems noticeably slower overall than my plain old G network.
Anyone else feeling like a mixed network is slower than plain G?
Also, does anyone have a sense for how security options impact peformance?
    Thanks.

I'm in a similar position, picking up the new AE this weekend, and form what I've read there's a better way, and here's what I'm going to do, maybe you'll want to try it:
-Setup the new AEx as an N-only network, ramped up.
-Connect either the older AEx or EXp via ethernet to it, and hang it off there in bridge mode.
-Try to put some distance between the two, at least 20 feet.
-You can set it up as a g-only network if you like, and it'll handle wireless communications from you, and the the other g base station, also offering it's services on your total network, but without decreasing the n-speed.
Hope it helps. For more info on setting this up, consult the 'Designing Airport Extreme-n Networks" manual, here (PDF).

  • Why does Airport Express slow down my wireless network??

Hello, guys! Here I am again, seeking for help...
Ok, so here's the situation: my internet service provides me with 10Mbps. My cable modem is hooked up to a 4-month old Airport Extreme in my home office, two walls away from the living room, where I'm typing from now. Internet's wireless speed in this living room has always been about 10Mbps, barely any loss when switching my signal from cable to wireless.
I then decided to buy an Airport Express in order to extend my wireless network, since I want to work in a room far from this living room and with Airport Extreme alone I got no internet signal there.
Ok, so I installed the Express right at the living room (I can say it's pretty much at the middle of the house) and now I got full internet sign at the far room, great!
HOWEVER, my wireles speed has been cut by half!! At this very same living room where the signal was 10Mbps before I installed the Aiport Express, it's now - at the very best!- 5Mbps!! Needless to say that it's even slower at the far room it was intendend to extend the signal to, but that was kind of expected.
*But why does it cut in half my internet speed at the living room if Airpot Extreme IS delivering 10Mbps at that point of the house??* Am I not setting it up properly, how can I solve this??
Thank you so much for any help you can give me!
    Cheers,
    Renata
