Why does Microsoft continue to ignore web standards in Outlook?

Why does Microsoft refuse to support CSS development?
Is there an email client available that supports full CSS and HTML rendering? I know about Entourage, but that is for Mac and we use PC at work. I am really interested in email newsletters and developing that form of communication, i.e. embedding graphics etc in the body of emails.
I do it now as part of my role - creating the newsletter in Dreamweaver, viewing it in the browser and sending by email. However, I still have to use CSS tables for layout and things like image map hotspots don't work, so I always add a link to the web version of images I create for the emails. I know I can get round it to a certain extent with more rows etc in my tables, but I wish I could just design graphics and images elsewhere, e.g. Illustrator, Photoshop and Fireworks and simply add them to Dreamweaver as I would normally with webpage creation.
I know about Mailchimp and that is not what I want. I want to be able to create everything myself as I do now, but without the CSS restrictions.

I disagree ...
You can disagree all you wish.  But I stand by my position that HTML e-mail is more closely akin to text messaging than it is to web development. And Outlook is on a very long list of e-mail clients that do not behave like web browsers:   Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, Squirrel Mail, Eudora, Lotus Notes, etc...
...and take offence at your snooty response.
I don't know what you're smoking my friend, but my reply wasn't snooty or offensive.  My tone is best described as abrupt, the result of dashing off hurried replies between other work-related tasks.
You madam need to get your head around good email communication to grab people's attention...
Now who is being condescending and pompous?   Are you telling me that good email needs visual interest?  It's a nice idea.  But OMG, 75% of e-mail users with anti-virus software have their images turned-off for security reasons and the remaining web mail users don't see images unless they go through hurdles.  So what's the point?
In summary, good communication is recognizing the medium for what it is, exploiting it's advantages and diminishing its disadvantages.    You sell the steak; not the sizzle.

What does "extracted channel PDF" mean and why does it continually duplicate on my desktop?  I think it happens when I move a file in Finder to another file and when I copy some web files.  I have to immediately move to trash all the duplications on my desktop.  How do I avoid this on my Mac (Mavericks)?  Thanks for your help!

What application is set to open PDF files? If you CNTRL click on the file and open with Preview does the problem occur?
If not change the default application to open PDF files to Preview.
You can do this by highlighting the file and either use CMD i or Get Info , this will open a window with the info on the file with an option to change the application that opens the file.
That's all I can think of.

Why does Adobe continue to sell Master cs6 when they discontinued the suites and released Creative Cloud CC?

CS6 is not discontinued it is the last perpetual version of Adobe products and is still being marketed.  Adobe prefers you to join the cloud.  However Adobe knows many intelligent customers will not be joining their cloud.

  • Why does the Fireworks save for web function give better results than in Photoshop?

Having used the trial version of Fireworks, I have noticed that the save for web function gives greater compression and image quality than saving for web in Photoshop. Why is this?
As Adobe are not continuing in developing Fireworks, does anyone know if will they will improve the save for web function in Photoshop to match the Fireworks version?
Are there any third party companies who anyone can recommend who will process large volumes of images for web?
    Thanks

One of my favourite topics ;-P
First, the save for web function in Photoshop has not seen any real updates in a long time. In Fireworks PNG export allows for fully transparent optimized files with indexed 256 or less colours, which is impossible in the save for web function in Photohop. It is unsupported.
This is one of the reasons why Fireworks does a much better job than Photoshop. Another reason is that Photoshop adds meta junk in its exported files, and this also increases the file size (and should be removed, because there are also a number of fields which include information about your setup).
One other caveat is that Photoshop's save for web functions neither allows for a choice in chroma subsampling, and instead decides automatically below a certain quality threshold to degrade the colour sharpness quality. The user has no control over this. (Fireworks also limits the user this way.)
One thing to be careful of: FW's jpg quality setting, and PS's quality settings are very different - a 50 in Photoshop is not the same 50 setting in Fireworks.
For jpg optimization I generally use RIOT (free): http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/
(When you install, be careful NOT to install the extra junkware!)
Fireworks cannot change the chroma subsampling to 4:2:0, which does degrade the quality a bit compared to RIOT and Photoshop in my experience. Photoshop adds useless meta information, even if the user tells it not to do that. RIOT allows you to remove that information, saving 6k. RIOT also offers an automatic mode that optimizes existing jpg images without degrading the quality further, and often saves 10k or more, depending on the images.
Interestingly enough, in my tests exported Fireworks jpg images are always reduced in file size by RIOT, due to FW's jpg export limitations, without any image degradation.
In my tests FW's jpg quality versus file size turns out to be the worst of all three. RIOT generally wins, or is at least on par with Photoshop.
As for PNG export, Photoshop's save for web function is quite abysmal. No 256 colour full transparency export is possible, while Fireworks does support this.
Having said that, there is a free alternative that leaves both Photoshop AND Fireworks in the dust: Color Quantizer. http://x128.ho.ua/color-quantizer.html
CQ is an amazing little tool: with it anyone can create PNG files with full transparency and reduced to ANY number of colours! It means that a 512 colour PNG with full transparency is now very easy to do. On top of that, for more difficult images a simple quality mask brush tool allows the user to control and retain even small colour details in a PNG, while reducing the file size to an absolute minimum.
CQ is one of the best kept secrets of a Web Developer's toolkit. And it is free!
Both RIOT and Color Quantizer have a built-in batch mode. Both are available for WIndows. Not for Mac. If you are on a Mac, try imageOptim. Not nearly as good as RIOT and CQ, but quite passable.
PS to be fair, the newest versions of Photoshop do allow for export of 8bit PNGs with full transparency through the use of its Generator functionality. But again, it cannot compete with CQ. And as far as I am aware, Generator cannot be used in Photoshop's batch processing (which, btw, is very slow! For simpler daily image processing tasks I have to do in batches, I prefer IrfanView, which is lightning fast! IrfanView).

  • Why does Microsoft New Phonetic IME 10.1 for Chinese (Traditional) not work with Firefox 5 on Windows 7?

When I use the standard out-of-box New Phonetic IME 10.1 for Chinese (Traditional), I can only input the following sequence of characters, regardless of the key(s) I press:
    ㄅㄉˇˋㄓˊ˙ㄚㄞㄢ
So, even continuously pressing the same key will produce the above sequence of characters.
This problem does not affect Internet Explorer 9 or any other programs that run on Windows 7.

  • Why Does iTunes Continuously Read From the Hard-drive?

Hi. I have recently discovered an odd behaviour from iTunes: instead of reading an entire song from the harddrive and storing it in ram during playback, iTunes reads small chunks of data very frequently. For example, when playing a 128Kbps song the HD reads 68KB chunks approximately every 3 seconds, and when playing lossless WAVE files the HD is constantly reading at 200KB/s. I found this out by having iTunes open and playing music while having all other programs closed, and monitoring the disk activity from Activity Monitor (and I'm sure that it's iTunes that was reading from the HD because when the music was paused the HD was idle).
So, my question is why would iTunes do this? This seems like an extremely inefficient use of the harddrive for several reasons:
    - Constantly reading small chunks from the HD uses much more power than reading large chunks infrequently because idle hard-drives use much less power than active hard-drives
    - This will slow down other applications that need to make heavy use of the HD because iTunes will be constantly interrupting anything else that is using the disk (this is especially true for Photoshop or any other program that uses lots of swapfile space)
    - It puts unnecessary wear on the HD heads
    - It is dangerous for laptops, which can easily get thrown around or bumped. Momentarily reading a large chunk of data and leaving the HD idle for the majority of the time will be much safer for the HD heads
    - Hard-drive-based portable music players read large chunks of data infrequently because it is well-known that this saves power and protects the HD in these devices.
So... is there any reason that iTunes is exempt from these reasons??
    -Eric

I too have wondered about this. You'd think with 1.5GB RAM that itunes would take 3MB of it and leave my drive alone for a few minutes. I don't really feel comfortable doing drive intensive activities such as file copying while itunes is running.

  • Why does Firefox continue to state that the Java Deployment Toolkit is known to be vulnerable.

The original issue with Java has been fixed yet FF continues to state the same warning which must be confusing at least and a road block for others at worst?
    There's a thread
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=636633
that 'discusses' this and the person Anthony Hughes, QA Mentor (:ashughes)
has said that the issue should be posted here (don't know why he wouldn't do that himself, seems very unhelpful as a 'Mentor').
So, I'm posting a question, which is really a request that the Devs remove this warning.
It has nothing to do with my OS and also doesn't need me to Allow you to install something to gather information, just install Java and check the Plugins...

Obviously the responder didn't check anything assuming that the responder had Java installed.
If Java was NOT installed on the responders system, then the responder didn't bother to check 'what you get' when running FF in Safe Mode....
When running FF in Safe Mode you get NOTHING in the menu bar and therefore you can't check Addons>Plugins to see if the warning exists.
If the responder had read the thread in Bugzilla@Mozilla the responder would have seen that the warning was added by the FF Support Team, not an Addon.
I suggest that someone read the other thread, possibly contact 'Hughes', install Java and actually look at the problem rather than providing useless answers to valid questions.
And the little checkbox indicating that I'm providing the requested information has been left as 'ticked' because the above response fits that criteria - Was this Useful? - No it wasn't.

  • Why does Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium hang up during installation?

I just purchased Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium and it is hung up during installation. It gets to 8% complete during installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package and just quits working. What is wrong?

The problem was that my anti-virus software was preventing proper installation.
Simple fix but at 3 AM not so simple to deduce.
    Thank you for your reply.

  • Why does Firefox re-download a web page that has already appeared in my browser? VERY time-consuming! Chrome just saves from the cache!

Every time I go to save a web page or image, Firefox insists on re-downloading the page/image, which consumes a great deal of time. Chrome (and my other browsers) seem to save the item directly from the cache or memory, which is MUCH FASTER! Is there an option to make Firefox save more rapidly, ie directly from cache or memory, so I don't have to sit (and swear and fume) while the file is being RE-downloaded??

600+ MB does sound like a lot, but that depends on what you are using as your homepage, and how much of that 600 is being used by the plugin container - Flash and other plugins. Also, using that amount might have to do with how much RAM you have installed - the more RAM installed and the more Firefox allows itself to use. If you have AVG 2012 installed and the AVG Advsior is giving you that message, see this: <br />

  • Why does Firefox continue to crash?

Can someone please suggest why Firefox continues to crash when attempting to download a file. It happens every time, without fail.
    * I have deleted the downloads.sqlite file (more than once) to no effect.
    * I have disabled AVG firewall etc - to no effect.
    * Firefox originally crashed on the latest version, so I downgraded to v5.0.1 - to no effect. I have checked using AVG and an online virus/spyware checker and can find no infection.
    * I have submitted 17 crash reports since 29 September, but when I right click on any of them, and try to open in a new tab, I receive the following messge: “We couldn't find the OOID you're after. If you recently submitted this crash, it may still be in the queue.”
My OS is Vista Business 32 bit. Thank you for any help & advice.

  • Why does iPhone continuously use 3G/data every hour, despite "everything" is turned off?

Every hour, one to several times an hour, the phone uses 0.1 to 20kb with 3G / GPRS. And this despite the fact that the following is off:
    - WiFi
    - Notifications
    - Locations
    - Push
Someone who can explain to me what/why the phone uses the GPRS for? I have unlimited GRPS included from my cellphone operator (NetCom in Norway), so this is no worries. However when I travel abroad, this can get expensive.
I know I just can turn of 3G, but I would still like to know why the continuos use of GRPS happens. In case it's an app or setting I haven't done anything with.
Just in case: no app is running :-)
Have looked online and there are many who have an opinion, but do not know. I'm looking for an answer, not what people think the the answer is :-)

Still trying to figure this out.  Really trying to avoid having another iCloud for my next iPad. Can anyone confirm if the iPhone is storing a lot of OS files in iCloud?  If you're backing up your iPhone to iCloud, what is your storage size?

  • Why does Firefox continually close itself without warning, but reopen prior tabs, without an error message or crash report?

For the past couple weeks Firefox has been randomly closing itself, without warning. I will be on another program on my laptop and Firefox will shut down. But, when I reopen it, all my tabs will restore as if nothing happened, and there is rarely a recovery error alert. I also do not receive crash reports for this phenomenon. Everything about the browser seems to be working fine as usual otherwise.

I'm sorry but I think you didn't get the problem right. Firefox just unexpectedly closes. It does not crash. There are no crash reports.
