Why does multi-colored spin wheel keep coming up and computer is unresponsive?
I have a macbook pro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB.
When I am on my user account and on safari and doing other things, the multi colored spin wheel always comes up usually every 20 seconds or so and my computer becomes very sluggish or unresponsive.
Also, when that wheel comes up, my mac makes a faint loading, clicking noise every 4 or 5 seconds.
If I switch to a "test" user account on my mac, everything works fine.
Any suggestions??
Bought this computer in May 2010
That is the "Wait cursor". This indicates that computer is busy performing a task and it takes a while.
To resolve the issue follow the suggestions in this article including "Repair Disk".

Spinning wheel keeps coming up
My laptop ran out of battery yesterday and when I charged it and turned it on it's now been constantly freezing and the spinning wheel coming up. I force quit all programmes and restarted - didn't work. Then I did a safe boot but that didn't work either. I then emptied cache on safari but that hasn't worked and also have checked space on my HD and have plenty left so I'm very confused what's gone wrong, can anyone please help with this?

I have a MacBook Pro. When surfing the web it will eventually slow to a crawl. When this occurs, there will be a small multi-colored wheel spinning until my latest command is handled. What is causing this and is there a way that I can modify or prevent this from happening? Is there a setting that will prevent this?
When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
I keep getting a pop up reminder to install Java SE 6. When I attempt to install it an error occurs saying that there is a internet connection problem and the Java cannot be intalled. This thing pops up every 15 minutes. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help
OK, so you don't have a working iTunes.
What I would like to do now is to try installing each iTunes component separately.
First uninstall the 5 iTunes programs that you have installed.
You should have iTunesSetup.exe saved in a folder on your PC, probably in the downloads folder. If not download and save it now.
Open the folder containing iTunessetup.exe with explorer.
Next open notepad and copy the following 3 lines into it.
md temp
itunessetup /extract temp
pause
Save the file as extract.bat into the same folder that contains the itunes installer.
Open the downloads folder and you should find the extract file that you saved. Double click on it and a black window will open telling you what it is doing. When its finished, press any key to continue.
You should find that a folder called temp has been created containing all the itunes msi files.
Install in this order by double clicking on them:
Apple Application Support
Bonjour
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Software Update
Quicktime
iTunes
If one of the installs fails, stop and post the error message in full. I am hoping that by doing this separately we will get a better error message. -
Why does the new dvd superdrive keep returning disk and not reading it

Why does Magic Bullet looks crash my After Effects and computer when I open it?
I don't really know how else to explain. I've tried re-installing both. I don't know what else to do. I'm on After Effects CS5.
Just updated my display drivers.
Then un-update them. MBL is, after all, driven by OpenGL and may frown on the slightest variation there. Also inquire with Red Giant Software what driver versions they support.

I'm converting a word doc to a pdf and have a color spin wheel - going on 10 min now. any clue as to why? or how i make it stop?
Hit command tab and swtich to the Finder, under the Apple menu is Force Quit, do that to the program that is causing your "hang" and restart the program and what you were doing.
If you didn't save your file beforehand, then your going to have to make it again. -

Why does the color wheel come up when I I can't get rid of it.
Why does the color wheel come up when I try to open an email? I can't get rid of it unless I sign in again!
The spinning beach ball of death (SBBOD) can be caused by many things. Common causes are not enough RAM, insufficient HD space or another process using a lot of the CPU's power. You can open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) for many things including the %CPU column to see if there is an app using a large %CPU. Also click the System Memory tab and see how much FREE RAM it shows. As a general rule your system should have 500MB or more available.
Finally I'd recommend reading and using the Spinning Beach Ball of Death article for additonal troubleshooting steps. -
Why do we see the colored spinning wheel
Bill Maher quipped about seeing the colored spinning wheel on his Mac more and more often. I see it all the time on all my Macs. When I click a link the blue line progresses a while , then and only when I highlight the entire address window and hit enter does it sorta re-loads and takes me to the link.
I got rid of all my windows boxes 11 months ago and would never go back to windows.
Any Ideas? In Virtual Box terminology, how many cpus (Core i7 threads) did you assign to Windows 7? Here is my rule of thumb: I will not assign more than half of my host cpu thread count to Virtual Box. If you exceed that, the Life Savers brand spinning beach ball will visit you.
If you are running Flash, visit the Flash panel in System Preferences Other. Select the Advanced tab. Under Browsing Data and Settings, select Delete All... This will get rid of all the Flash related detritus that the Flash plug-in may still be referencing. Also, empty your browser cache.
In ~/Library, drag the contents of the Cache folder to the Trash. Reboot while pressing and holding the shift key. When you see a progress bar appear, release the shift key. Before you click the arrow to complete the login, press and hold the shift key again until your desk top appears. Empty the Trash. Reboot normally.
The above process has cleaned out and/or rebuilt system caches and databases. It has bebuilt your font cache, and ran a disk check on your boot drive. You may notice a performance improvement.
I also periodically get the Safari URL loading delay and I have a 3MB/s pipe into the house. The rhetorical question is whether this is DNS lag, or one of the router hops on the Internet causing delays. Rebooting your local router can't hurt. -

Firefox keeps freezing up and giving me the colorful spinning wheel especially when I'm chatting with a friend of facebook or when i'm listening to music on myspace or even have just two tabs open and it's never done it before but now it just keeps giving me the colorful spinning wheel and i have to force quit and start over.

== May 5th, 2010Hi If you get an error message saying your flash is blocked by firewall or needs updating or similar and you just get the spinning colour wheel try this link
It takes you to Adobe which tells you which ver of flash player you have - you can then see if there is a later ver by clicking on the library and it automatically selects the correct version for you to download.
Worked a treat for me! Good Luck

Colored Spinning Wheel spinas and spins when waking up
Sometimes when my G4 tries to wake up, all I get is the colored spinning wheel - spinning & spining. I have to apple/option/escape. Why just sometimes and why at all?
hi there--
could be different things. the first thing i would try would be to go to /library/preferences/systemconfiguration and pull two plists inside that folder. these are the powermanagement.plist and the autowake plist. also, i would check to see if this was connected to a peripheral device by unplugging all of them, although a device is more likely to cause a problem where the computer can't go to sleep. if pulling the files doesn't do anything i would boot to the install disk and do disk repair. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. and if it still doesn't make a difference, i would try a pmu reset. i believe it is called a cuda button on this model, but i cannot find specific directions. i can find them for the pci graphics, which is probably similar. if you look in your user guide there might be instructions on doing that. hope something here works for you. Mac Mail and the dreaded colored spinning wheel!
Hi:
A new issue has developed with Mac Mail on my MBP.
As of today I am consistently getting a colored spinning wheel, as though the program is trying to fetch my mail, but cannot. I have to use "Force Quit", because the program is unresponsive.
I'd be happy to paste the Apple Report data if anyone thinks this is helpful.
Any ideas as to what the problem is, or what I can do to fix it.
Its strange that the problem just "started", out of thin air!
Thanks,
Michael StrykerDid you try repairing permissions and then re-testing Mail to see if the problem persists? What about disabling the "Warn before visiting a fraudulent website" option in Preferences > Security? Have you tried creating a new user account and setting up Mail there to see if the problem occurs there?
Which version of Mail does it say you have?
