Why does my 10.5.8 machine wake at 5:59 pm everyday?

For quite some time and I really noticed more so recently that my G4 DP1.42 wakes, if it's asleep, at exactly 5:59 pm everyday, even after DST change. I have searched high and low in the prefs panel and everywhere else and can not find anything that I could have set that would be doing this.
It's a complete mystery. Any ideas?

All the versions of Backup up to the last were great, free and as I said I still use today. The flexibility is that of the old days when Apple was something to work with. Not against.
I have a new clean install on a separate partition that I need to move into that would be perfect to test. I just have to remember to boot to it at the appropriate time. I really need to move into it. But what I use to do as fun and would only take a couple of hours, is now something I just don't want deal with. So . . .
Things to try and things to ponder. I think this is happening just to jack with me. If it isn't one thing, it's another. My laptop died on me, now I have to deal with that so there's that now too.
Will it ever end?
Thanks . . .

  • Why does external hard drive have to wake up?

I understand that in Finder if I want to look at a file then it might have to wake up my external hard drive.
Why is it the case that when I perform a seemingly unrelated action - such as bringing up a dialogue box in Photoshop, viewing developer tools in Chrome, or playing the next track of a file sitting on a folder on my desktop - forces the external drive to wake up, and forces me to wait until the wakeup whilst it does so?
Yes, I want the drive to sleep as much as possible. It's only there for time machine backups which I rely on, and the less the drive is spinning the lower the chances are of the drive having an issue. So turning off "sleep when inactive" is NOT a solution.

Not sure why but I had the same issue when I was using FW drives and ML.  Later I upgraded to Mavericks and changed over to USB3 drive with my new Mini and now no longer have that issue.  Must be something between the OS and the type of drive but not sure what the critical component is.

  • Why does iChat launch every time I wake my computer?

Very annoying. Since upgrading to Lion, every time I wake my monitors, iChat starts up. It is not in login items and I can't find anything in the preferences that suggest it should behave this way. It feels like naggy shareware, but even that would have been something I intentionally installed. I've removed all of my accounts from iChat and still it wants to start up every time I wake the computer.
I thought I had the problem licked:
    http://bertrandaaron.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/stubborn-ichat-after-upgrading-to- os-x-lion/
But after my next reboot the iChat wizard wanted me to set up a new account. NO, THANKS. I just want it to stop launching in the first place. When I want to use iChat, I'll launch it manually.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
My first thought would have been Login Items in your User Account (System Preferences > Accounts > your Account > Login Items).
    Next option
Open iChat if it is not open.
You should be able to open the iChat Menu > Preferences
    Go to the Accounts section.
Highlight the Bonjour account and see that it is NOT enable in the right hand pane  (If the account is Ticked (in the list) it is Active )
    Next place.
Lion does have this ability to remember if a window is Open on Shut down and will reopen it.
Check the System Preferences > General Section for the setting that does this under the number of Applications, Documents, and Servers that you can set to be remembered.
There is also a similar Setting in the Shut Down Message.
I would try turning both of these Off and cycling through a Shut Down and reboot sequence.
That should stop it launching on Computer Start up or Wake but it will not solve what is causing it.
Most likely it is a name that can be used in Mail or Face Time as well as iChat such as an Apple ID from MobileMe.
Also Check your Entry in the Address Book (My card = Head and SHoulders iCon) and make sure it does not list an name iChat can use.

  • Time Machine- hourly (then why does my external gear up more often?)

Time Machine is a beautiful thing. It kicks off every hour.
Then why does my external HD come alive more frequently? It seems to come on every 10 mins or so for a few minutes - and I don't know what it's doing. (It's not performing a TM backup.)
    Thanks!

The operating system or other apps, when there's a need, checks mounted drives/partitions. For example, I have a file utility that, when invoked, polls the drives. This wakes my drives, even those on a server in which one of its drives is mounted on my Mac.

?  Why does my Photoshop PS2 open on my Mac Book Pro OS 10.6.8 Intel Core 2 Processor but not on my just purchased Mac Book Pro OS 10.7.3? On my new machine I get a message saying "You can't open Photoshop CS2 because Power PC applications are no longer supported". I don't have a Power PC on either machine and this App does run on the older machine with an Intel processor. benrusy

This is not new.  The fact that Mac OS no longer supports PowerPC applications starting with OS X Lion has been known for over a year now.  You'll need to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop

  • Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..

Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..?
When my iMac goes to sleep I then later try to click the magic track pad or keyboard and it will usually then show the initial password entry login screen and then go off. The machine is still on but the display is black and will sometimes flash up the screen again if I press the magic track pad or keyboard but will then black out again..

Well, there are many different reasons why it does this. It might shut off due to power voltage problems, system overheats, or there is a System Problem. The reason it might be hard to boot up is because your power button might not work properly or your system hard drive is damaged.

  • HT201250 If time machine backups hourly.  Why does it need to backup daily, weekly and monthly

If time machine backups hourly.  Then why does it need to backup daily, seekly, and monthly?

    It doesn't.
What it does is discard intermediate backups at the end of 24 hrs and keep just three spaced backups from the previous day.
At the end of the next day, that day's will be reduced to 3, and the previous 3 trimmed to one; the last backup of that day.
Daily backups are kept for a month, then trimmed to the last backup of the week.
The weekly backups are kept until the disc runs out of space and TM starts deleting the oldest ones.

  • Why does restoring a Hard Drive from Time Machine break all my software registration?

I've just upgraded the hard drive in my MacBook Pro using a Time Machine backup. (In the past I've used Carbon Copy cloner to duplicate the drive before installing it, but this seemed like an easier option.) The restore from TM went fine... but now all my apps are acting as if I've just installed them for the first time. Mail and Dropbox went thru their first time startup screens, and are reimporting all my files/messages. Word and Photoshop are asking for the registration serial numbers. What a hassle!
Does anyone know what Time Machine is doing, and why? Why aren't my apps fully restored? And is there any workaround?

I imagine it is because of the way CCC does makes an exact clone of your drive.
Time Machine restores the drive file-by-file and doesn't necessarily restore support files. Most apps know when they've been moved and ask for serial numbers.
However, I have never restored a complete hard drive with Time Machine, so I don't know exactly what to expect.

I am trying to install CS 5.5 master and I have mac 10.7. Why does it say my machine doesn't meet minimum requirements?

What processor are you using?  Which Mac are you installing this on?  How much memory do you have installed? You can find the system requirements listed at http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/system-requirements-master-collection.ht ml#main_CS5_Master_Collection_system_requirements.  You will want to make sure that you meet or exceed each of these requirements.

  • Does Time Machine wake my computer up every hour?!

    I am finding mixed answers...
Does time machine wake up the computer to do the hourly backup?
It seems to do this, as it made eight backups last nite.
if so, what's the sense? any way to prevent this?

    Hello all:
I rarely make statements without qualifying them. However, TM does not wake a sleeping computer. If a computer is waking up, something is causing that to happen besides TM.

Edit: I believe that dwb has a good thought. Go to system preferences>energy saver>sleep and see what you have indicated the system should do.

  • Why does Time Machine disappear?

Why does Time Machine disappear each restart?

Suggest that you power cycle the entire network, as things are likely out of sequence
Power every device off on the network, order is not important
Wait a few moments, then start the modem first and let it run by itself for 2-3 minutes
Start the Time Capsule the same way
Start each network device one at a time about a minute apart
    Check for proper operation

  • Why does multi-machine rendering work so poorly?

more specifically, watch folder rendering with multi-machines is pointless because skipping a frame seeming to take as long as rendering the frame, so one machine can never catch up to the other.  why does skipping a frame take some long?  i mean it's been in the software for like 10 years. is this not considered important?

These two features are not intended to be used together.
Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing is intended to turn a single computer into a self-contained render farm of sorts. Multi-machine rendering is intended to use multiple computers in a render farm. Attempting to use these two items together is mixing two different organizational schemes for managing the rendering of frames.

  • Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

  • Why does Macbook Pro rename my Time Machine and other external hard drives?

Why does my Macbook Pro rename my Time Machine to "Time Machine I" and then back again periodically.  Last night it was one name, this morning it is another. It also does it on other external hard drives - usually by adding a I after the name. It is frustrating for me because I store a large runtime folder on an external hard drive and end up losing a lot of time with my computer not being able to find files because of the renaming.
And even though it still looks like Time Machine under "Get info: - when I open a folder window or Disk Utility it has a new name, and there is no way to change it.  I've seen other questions that mention Macs renaming themselves, so it seems like a similar issue. I did try deleting the preferences plist file, but that did not work.
Is this a glitch with this particular model or operating system?
    Specs: Macbook Pro A1297 - 2009 model.
    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8GB ram
    Many thanks for any advice.

strange, my external HDs were added to the exception list automatically. maybe because they wouldn't fit on the time machine volume.
It seems to depend on when the drives were connected. When you first turn Time Machine on, it only excludes the TM drive itself, and any drives not formatted HFS+.
If you connect a drive later on, that drive will be excluded automatically.

    Hello stephiejoy,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
The following support article will help you in resolving this issue your iPad is having with its audio.  Even though this article states it's for an iPhone, the same troubleshooting steps do apply to your iPad as well.
