Why does my 1st gen iPad always turns itself off and goes back to the screen. Whether I'm reading news, iBooks, etc, suddenly it goes off.

If that doesn't help, the battery may be dying and need replacement. See here (tap on Battery Replacement): http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=ipad
Alternately, might consider start saving for a new iPad. The newest iPad 6 should come out in the next few months. When it does, sellers will want to get rid of old inventory with good deals.

  • Why does my 1st gen iPad crash so much?

Hello. I have a 1st generation iPad (64GB WiFi + 3G) that I'm getting more frustrated with lately. It will freeze up or take a very long time to respond (very long is GREATER THAN 30 seconds) on many apps. As a result, I've found myself forced to limiting myself to Safari, Mail, and Tweetbot. I used to like using Flipboard and Evernote, but those crash often... especially Flipboard and Tweetbot.
At max, it runs iOS 5.1.1.
I've tried quitting apps, restarting it (power off and then on) and resetting it (Home + Power). Today, I've had to restart it three times and all I've been using have been Tweetbot and Safari. Ten minutes ago, Tweetbot just hung... and hung... and hung. Pressing the Home button didn't even work immediately. If I waited 30+ seconds, it did respond, but still slowly.
Is it that my first-gen iPad is obsolete?

Hence, I'll have to disagree with you re: considering going with either a 2nd or 3rd generation iPad. I personally won't buy a used one and, even if I did, it would definitely cost me more in the long-term as I'd find myself in the same position I'm in now, of having to replace outdated hardware and thus costing me more in the long run.
Ah, you're one of those Champagne Taste, Beer Budget kinda guys.
You might also consider refurbished.  These are like new iPads with a warranty from Apple.  They are a bit cheaper, but still several hundred dollars.

For me, I simply replace these mobile devices every couple years.  At the pace of change today, analyzing cost/benefit doesn't really help matters, except perhaps justify a decision to buy a higher end model.  They all go out of date at some point, so I figger I'll just get what I want.  Bottom line is that if you still want an iPad that works, you're going to have to shell out the cash.

  • Why does my 1st gen iPad apps keeps crashing

All my apps for my ipad keep crashing is there any thing I can do about this

Closing apps typically indicates that the app is crashing.
You might try restoring your iPad by plugging it in to iTunes (latest version: 11.0.4).  Let it sync, then choose "Restore ..." from the iPad's summary page in iTunes.
You may wish to be selective in which apps you restore to the iPad, as one or more may be corrupt.

  • Why does my 3rd generation iPad freeze on an app and then go to the home screen immediately?

Well, my new iPad closes the application and goes to the homes careen. This has been happening on my iPad 2 recently but then I bought the 3rd generation iPad and it does the same thing but more often, Can somebody tell me if this is normal and if it isn't can I send it back and get a new one? And if I get a new one will it do the same thing? Thank you sooo much!

If it's happening on all the apps that you've downloaded from the App Store, but not the Apple built-in apps, then try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.

  • HT4623 how can i update my 1st gen ipad when its running at 5.1, i do the update scan and it just says ipad is up to date? why will it not update to 7.1???

how can i update my 1st gen ipad when its running at 5.1, i do the update scan and it just says ipad is up to date? why will it not update to 7.1???

iPad 1's can only be updated to IOS 5.1.1. The iPad 1 doesn't have the processing power to handle any higher.

  • Why does my 1st Gen randomly attempt to turn off or go into sleep mode?

I have a first generation Ipod touch with IOS 3.1.3. I have never had a problem like this before. It keeps attempting to turn itself off or puts itself into sleep mode. I know it is not the battery that is the problem because it always has plenty of battery when it does this. Also, I doubt it has anything to do with an app or something since I've reset it several times. Once in a while it will work without a flaw, but recently it acts like the sleep button is being held down or pressed. Sometimes the button doesn't even respond when I press it, but still tries to turn off. If the Ipod is turned off, it will try turning on, then shut down in the middle of it then try to turn on again. I have tried reseting it and restoring it but nothing seems to work. I don't have the time or money to get it fixed, so if there is anything I could do that would fix it, that would be great.

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. The appointment is free.

  • Why does my iPad (3rd Gen.) keep turning itself on and off?

I currently have my 3rd generation iPad plugged into the wall charger. It has been plugged in since yesterday morning and is still going through the same routine: on, off, on, off...HELP! I have tried to reset it, but it won't respond; the screen just keeps going black (with Apple logo) as soon as it turns on enough to get to the lock screen. Also, it will immediately become unresponsive when I unplug it from the charger.

I would think that you either have a charger problem or a something inside your iPad (battery, perhaps). I suggest you take it in for diagnosis.

  • HT1338 Why does my 1st gen iPod shuffle not recognized by ITunes 11

Why did it take me ten minutes to log into this web site.  The security pass words are rediculous

Apple no longer supports 1st gen Shuffle.  They want you to throw it away and buy the latest gadget from Apple.  Your alternative is to use a PC, which will recognize your IPod.

  • HT1430 Why does my 1st generation iPad skip step 3 while syncing?

What to do about my 1st generation iPad iOS 5.1.1 skipping step 3 while syncing?

If that happened to me, I would reset my iPad.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
I would also reboot my computer.
Then assuming you have the current version of iTunes on your computer, try the sync again.

  • Why does my 1st generation iPad crash and operate like crap?

It has all the updates installed, it freezes, crashes, and generally operates like a piece of crap. I am pretty close to taking a hammer to it and buying Samsung. What happened Apple quality? Did it pass with Steve Jobs in the quest for a dollar?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • Hi, I have  a recurring problem with my ipad3. The battery is showing 100% however my ipad constantly shuts itself down and comes back on. When its on it freezes and I cant turn it on or off, or runs really slow. Only had it 2 months,  is this usual ?

Hi, I have had my ipad3 for only 2months and have now had this problem 3 times. The battery is fully charged to 100% and when I try to switch it on the slider screen appears as normal, it only stays on for a short time then a small circle appears and the ipad switches off.
Eventually it switches itself back on, then continues to switch off and on again.
When the screen opens it runs very slowly and I cant open anything before it closes down again.
Today this has been happening constantly, and have not able to use it as I could not get it to stay on for any length of time, very frustrating!
I plugged it back in to recharge again and was able to eventually press both buttons to reset it again. It now seems to be working ok again.
Can anyone tell me if thay have had the same problems, or is this a faulty ipad?
Its the first Apple product Ive owned so dont know if this is a common problem or not, be grateful for any info on this, thanks

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.
