Why does my alarm on iPod classic fail to turn on

My iPod classic's alarm fails to activate.  I have reset and even did a factory restore.  The one thing that I notice is that when the iPod is charging and I see the battery icon, the time is also displayed.  The time that shows here is inaccurate.  The time that I set is right.  I think the alarm is governed by the hour that shows up in the battery icon.  Any ideas?  I have not bothered to deal with this until it went out of warranty.  Before the warranty expired, however, I got a support rep who had to call his supervisor to find out where to find the software version.  While I was on hold, I found it myself.  The rep also said he did not know much about the classic.

Check this article for some things to look at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
Also, I think the 5th gen has different tech specs than the nano, so while the nano may work on a lower powered USB port, the ipod 5th gen may not.
I would pay special attention to the following specs:
PC with USB port or card (USB 2.0 recommended)
Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
To view your USB's, right click on "My Computer" (either the icon on your desktop or under your windows start bar) then left click on "Manage." In the window that comes up open your device manager. In your device manager, look at you Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
What you are looking for: USB2, USB2.0, high-speed, enhanced, high-powered. If you see one of these you should be able to use your 5th gen on it just fine. Try switching USB ports to see which one is your 2.0. If you have a USB port on the front of your computer these are often not 2.0, and you want to try using one on the back of the tower.

It seems to be a glitch or bug. Its been officially acknowledged and addressed by Apple. There is no resolution other than waiting for a few days.   The Kb article by Apple states it will fix itself on January 7.

iPod displays a sad iPod icon
    Resolution
In most cases, the sad iPod icon indicates a hardware issue. If you are able to force iPod into Disk Mode, then it may not be a hardware issue, and you should try to restore your iPod with the latest software.

  • IPod classic fails to sync some tracks from iTunes

I use an iPod Classic 160 GB with iTunes. Both are fully up to date. Every time I sync with iTunes roughly 500 of 5000 odd tracks fail to sync. This number fluctuates, but stays around the 500 mark. iTunes does not recognise this problem - it claims to have synced completely. It is only when I go through certain Albums I notice that some tracks are missing. It tends to affect the same artists, but different songs are missing within any given Album each time. (ie: a song may appear on the iPod one try, then be gone the next.)
All my tracks are either AAC audio file or MPEG audio file. The problem seems to affect them irrespective of kind.
There is plenty of space on the iPod, with over 100 GB free.
I have tried Retry, Reset, Restart, Reinstall, Restore - all multiple times, with no result. I have tried syncing auto and manually, and wiping both iTunes and iPod every way I can think of. Still, when I sync, the problem remains.
This problem is driving me crazy, especially since I can find no cause, and no applicable advice on forums. I have searched Help forums for answers, but everything that comes up either doesn't match or I have already tried with no result.
    Please help.
If I need to give more detail for an accurate diagnosis please let me know.
I will be eternally greatful to anyone who can help.
    Thank you, Jonny.

I'm also having the same issue.  I have recently had to get rid of my old PC that my ipod was synced to and so have now had to sync my ipod to my new laptop.  The problem started as soon as I did this - at first it was saying that my laptop wasn't authorised in the itunes store, but it is and I have reconfirmed this.  All of my music was copied across from old computer but there are around 2000 songs not syncing.  If anyone can help it would be hugely appreciated, it's driving me mad! One other thing is that I went to download all of my previous itunes purchases to this laptop but only 3 of them actually downloaded - I had separately copied them across from my old computer anyway but wanted to keep the list of my purchases - when I go into my account it thinks I have downloaded everything so won't let me do it again.  I'm assuming both problems relate in some way to the new machine, but I don't know why.

  • Some manually artwork does not appear on ipod classic

I spent 5 hours yesterday searching for and adding cover art to my itunes albums. When I synched it to my ipod classic some of the art shows and some does not. I tried turning off the ipod and resetting it but no luck.
any ideas on how to fix this?
    g

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
*Why is artwork not showing on my iPod when it's there in iTunes?*
iTunes will display a cover in many of it's views provided at least one track from the album has embedded or downloaded artwork. The iPod appears to load only the artwork from the first track to create the cover flow and album views which means that it can sometimes fail to display art for albums even when you can see the art in iTunes. Further, when tracks are played on the iPod, artwork is displayed if and only if it exists for the currently playing track, so track one may show art while track two does not.
*How to find tracks without artwork*
To find all the tracks without artwork so that you can update them simply create a Smart Playlist with the rule *Has Artwork is False*. Use Google, Amazon, Discogs etc. to locate relevant images. Ideally these should be square, 320x320 pixels or above and borderless to give the best results in the various menus. I say 320x320 because I believe (from using TouchCopy) that it's the size used in the iPod cache so if you're going to crop or resize a smallish image you might as well work to that size. Otherwise 200x200 is probably a good minimum size. iTunes store art seems to be generally 600x600 which is probably a good maximum.
If you have artwork for some tracks of an album, but not others, find the album in the main music folder, select a track with artwork, right-click (Control-Click for Macs) on the art & click copy, then select all the tracks of the album, use CTRL-I or Command-I to *Get Info* and then paste the image into the artwork box.
I've created a script for Windows users that can replicate art from any track found to have art into any other tracks from the same album (stored in the same folder) which you can find at http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/scripts.asp
    *Rebuild artwork cache*
Sometimes the artwork cache becomes corrupt and fails to show correct artwork, even when this is properly set up in iTunes. To rebuild the artwork cache *(Pre iTunes 9 only)*, connect your iPod to iTunes. Locate the iPod in the Sources pane on the left-hand side, then select the Music tab. Remove the tick from *Display album artwork on your iPod*, sync the iPod, reselect the option & sync again. *Post iTunes 9*, the only option is a full restore of the iPod.

  • IPod Classic fails to restore or reset

A few times now all the music on my iPod just "disappeared".
Once while I was listening to music and it just stopped.
Looking at the iPod screen, it showed no music, no podcasts, no files of any type.
QUESTION: the hold button was on, so button pressing should not have made any difference.
    "Where'd it go???"
I was able to restore the iPod and then resynch the music and it worked for a bit.
This time the music is gone and I cannot restore or reset the iPod and have it "take".
When I plug my iPod in both the Finder -and- iTunes will become non-responsive, although not at the same time.
After at least 3 minutes (feels much longer) the iPod will show up on the Desktop and in iTunes.
I've been through the trouble shooting page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/#
I get to the "Restore" section, all of the steps are followed.
All of the screens defined on this page show up as expected.
However, again both the Finder and iTunes will freeze (become unresponsive) for an extended period.
When the iPod shows up in the Finder it has 4 folders: Contacts, Notes, Recordings and Calendar.
The "Notes" folder has a file called "Instructions" in it.  The other folders are empty.
When I navigate to the Notes folder to view "Instructions" the Finder will become unresponsive.
Eventually iTunes then shows the expected "Welcome to your new iPod" screen.
The iPod shows "Connected: do not disconnect"
Around this time, the iPod shown in the Finder -may- no longer show any folders.
Clicking on "Continue" I get the "Sync with iTunes" screen in iTunes and the iPod shows either "Connected" or "Synching".
Again, there is a bit of a delay that seems excessive.
The summary screen shows that the iPod is formatted for Macintosh with software 2.0.4
capacity is 148.87 with 148.40 "free" according to the sync bar at the bottom of the page.
Going back to the Finder to see what "Instructions" contains, "Get Info" shows that it is a Unix Executable File of 14 bytes dated 8/20/01
It can be opened with 'Terminal'.  The "more info:" section of the Info window keeps spinning.  My iPod was purchased in 2010.
    Back to iTunes:
"Check for Update" show 2.0.4 is the latest version.
Just for the halibut, I clicked on "Restore iPod"  (NOTE: i've been through this same process several times already so I'm just trying something different.)
The same steps as outlined on the troubleshooing page happen.
Stage 2 of the restore showing the progress bar on the iPod happens very rapidly.
The "Welcome" screen shows up on the iPod and then the "connected" screen follows soon there after.
And we're back to the "Welcome to your new ipod" screen in itunes.  ITunes becomes unresponsive for a brief period, but much faster than the last restore attempt.  All the summary information is the same.
Going to the "Music" tab I add only 717 songs (I mean, why bother to do more unless this works?)  The synch bar at the bottom of the frame
shows 137.82 GB free and a blue section shows up.  I then add one TV show and a light brown color shows up on the synch bar and 137.27GB is free
I added a couple of podcasts 137.12GB is free.
I click on the "Apply" button and synching starts (Duh, why would that happen?  ie why doesn't the button say "sync"?)
The iPod shows "Syncronizing: Do not disconnect"
itunes shows: "Syncing iPod" alternatine with "Syncing Music to ...(Step 2 of 2)"
The sync is complete. iTunes says the sync is complete and that the iPod should be ejected.
I click on the eject button inside of iTunes and a "Synching iPod" dialoge box comes up.
The iPod itself just shows "Connected"
The iPod finally shows "Ok to Disconnect" with a progress bar.
The iPod does not show up in iTunes or in the Finder.
Having disconnected the iPod at this point only to have my music disappear again, I'm waiting to see what happens.
The "Welcome" screen shows up on the iPod and dims.  A couple minutes later the iPod shows "Charged" and then it dims.
I disconnect the iPod and select "English".
There is "No Music" "No Podcasts" "No Video".
Settings shows 11.7 GB used and 137GB free.
The "Used" is all "Other".  11.7GB is about the size of the Music and Podcasts that I loaded.
Connecting the iPod again, the iPod shows up in the Finder immediately, but not on iTunes.
The iPod shows "connected eject before disconnecting".
Minutes later, the iPod again shows the Folders listed above in the Finder and iTunes is now "not responding".
Basically, we're back to where we started.
    Any clues?
