Why does my brand new imac keep freezing up?

I may only have several applications open and the computer will freeze up.  I can use the mouse and move it, but not click on anything.

Wow,
I wonder why it is that when someone wants a real answer and experiences from users as to why an Apple product doesn't work, there is usually an iCult member who somes to the defense of Apple as if being a disciple of God :-) That's not a slander. It's meant to be part truth, part humor.
Brody, your other answers are great and what I was wanting to hear about.  However, I can see you get too defensive about your favorite company.
I'm not looking for a lecture on why Apple is so wonderful.  I sincerely want to know the things I should look out about when buying an iMac and to hear solutions to problems form users with issues.  I would not be so hesitate about buying an iMac if it weren't for my current issues with iTunes freezing and crashing on multiple computers, an iPhone4 that doesn't work in speakerphone mode, and an iPad coming dead on arrival (rare I understand).  I've been an electronics system designer for more decades than you might think, so I am not dumb about equipment.
Now before anyone jumps to conclusions, I am not a proponent of Windows or any other specific competitive company.  Every product has its issues and advantages.  But let's get the fact right.  Apple is not the most valuable computer company on earth because of the "machines".  If they were, then they would own that market.  They don't.  They got to be so successful because of the nice selection and decent design of many various products and services (and at a high price too).  Apple does some really clever things, but also some dumb things as well.  I'm looking to avoid the dumb things.

  • My brand new iMac keeps freezing, how can I fix this?

I have only had my iMac for about a month and it freezes all the time. I can move the mouse but can't click on a thing. Does anyone know any possible solutions?

I have had this happen to me twice in the past week. Right now is the 2nd time. I  can't click on anything on my computer. I have tried with my Wacom tablet and even plugged in a mouse ( my normal one is bluetooth). The last time the only thing that worked was rebooting with the startup dics and running utilities, but it has only been a week and it has happened again. The catch is that the first time it happened I was running Snow Leopard, but I upgraded to Lion several days ago. What the heck is going on with my iMac and how can i fix it? Can I still use the startup disc that came with the computer even though I now have Lion?

  • My brand new iMac keeps freezing?

    Hi,
I have an iMac 27" late 2013 model, running OS 10.9.4, with 3.5 GHz i7, 32 GB of RAM and a 3 TB SATA hard disk drive (with 2.18 TB of storage remaining).
I bought it less than 2 months ago from the Apple Online store, and have been using it up until now with no problems.
Recently, the iMac began to freeze, at first the keyboard and mouse freeze, music playing in the background stops and no functions work, even after leaving the computer idle for 10mins - the only work around for this is to hold down the power button and reboot.
I generally run music production software, iTunes, browse with safari, and use Parallels Virtual Machine running Windows 8.1 for gaming (obviously not all at the same time). I've had Parallels on my computer since the beginning, and install games often, but only recently my version of Windows 8.1 completely stopped working for absolutely no reason (failed to boot - EFI booting error would come on screen), so I had to fully re-install my version of Windows 8.1 on to the computer. This was a worry as I thought something may be wrong with my hard drive, but my Mac OS still ran perfectly fine, UNTIL it began freezing.
As I said, I don't run all these programs at the same time, and usually only about 10-15 GB of CPU memory is being used when I am most active (checked with activity monitor). I've verified my disk in disk utilities and repaired permissions and there don't seem to be any errors.
What could be causing my mac to freeze? How should I go about finding a solution? I've been thinking about bringing it to an Apple Retail Store but have doubts it will freeze while in an appointment, as the freezing is infrequent and intermittent, but it is completely ANNOYING.
    Any advice would be amazing,
    Regards,
    hmforward

If the iMac is only two months old it is still under warranty.  Rather then messing around with it yourself you should just let Apple deal with it.
If you really want to try diagnosing it yourself you will need to remove all the extra software you have installed, especially the games and work from a clean machine adding things back a little at at time to see what effect it has on the system.  You can also try running Etresoft: EtreCheck A free app that will examine your system. It may help to locate software that us causing the problem.
But as I wrote above given the age  of the system you really should let Apple deal with it.
    regards

  • Why does my new iMac keep freezing for no apparent reason?

Why does my new iMac keep freezing? This usually happens when it is not being used and is particularly frustrating when I do need to use it and ahve to switch off and then on again and wait for it to reboot.
I am not computer literate so keep any answers as simple and idiot friendly as possible. I treat it like a car. If I put in the key and turn the ignition on and the enginesprings into life I am content. If not.............. well!

In order to provide any help we need to understand a little bit more about the problem you are experiencing.
You indicated the issue occurs when the sytem is not being used. Does this mean that you stop working on the system and the system 'goes to sleep' where the screen goes black, but when you need to wake it back up by pressing keys on the keyboard or clicking the mouse the system doesn't wake back up? To test for this issue open the System Preferences and click on the Energy Saver preferences. See the 'Computer Sleep' slider to the far right 'Never' setting. You can set the 'Display sleep' setting to any number you prefer. With these settings see if the issue still occurs and let us know the results. If it resolves the issue then give Apple a call and let them know you are unable to wake the system when it goes to sleep. You shouldn't be having that issue.

  • Why does my brand new iphone die???

Why does my brand new iphone die???

    sorry!!!
Make sure that the USB cable is plugged into the iPhone 4S and iTunes is running. (The only reason we have iTunes running is that, once the device boots into DFU, iTunes will prompt you with a dialogue box.)
Now, turn the device off by holding the power button till Slide to Power Off appears on screen. (If you plugged in the cable after turning the device off, it will turn on again.)
With your device off. press and hold the Power button for 3 seconds.
Without releasing the Power button, press the Home button and keep both the buttons pressed for 10 more seconds.
Release the Power button, but keep the Home button pressed for another 10 seconds.
The device should kick into DFU mode in around the 7th or 8th second, and iTunes will display a prompt that say's "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode you must restore....
The black and totally blank screen is totally normal; there is no need to be alarmed. This was all that it took for you to put your iPhone 4S in DFU mode.
Click on "OK" and follow the steps to restore iPhone.

  • Why does my 2009 27" imac keep shutting down?

why does my 2009 27" imac keep shutting down?

Could, also, be failing hard drive , power supply or logic board.
You may have to make an appointment and take your iMac in to Apple or Apple authorized repair center for diagnostics and a repair estimate.
If your iMac has a 1 TB internal hard drive, it maybe a Seagate drive and maybe eligible for free replacement under the Apple Seagate 1 TB internal hard drive replacement program.
If you can get your iMac running, you need to backup all of your data ASAP!. Either backup to optical disc, flash drive/s or purchase an external hard drive for backup. You can use a data cloning program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper to make an exact copy of your iMac's internal hard drive.
You can check for eligibility for free hard drive replacement by inputting your iMac's serial number here.

  • Why does my brand new shuffle have static

Why does my brand new shuffle have static?

Describe it a little. Is it like very loud? Or hardly notable? It could be your headphones giving you that issue. Have you tried a different set of headphones?

Why does my brand new MacBook pro have 13 cycles on the battery right out of the box? Shouldn't it have 0 because it's brand new.

Yes it should have 0.  I would return it, that means that the battery has already went through 13 full cycles.  Perhaps they accidentally resold a returned one as new.

  • Brand new iMac 21", freeze. Mouse movies, but does nothing

We just opened a brand new iMac 21" literally yesterday (purchased within the last three weeks). It was on for about an hour with no problems whatsoever. Then, while transferring photos to iPhoto, the system interface randomly froze. You can move the mouse around the screen, but it does nothing. You can't click anything. Hard resets/shutdowns result in the system rebooting back to the desktop like normal, but the mouse stays in this semi-frozen state. You can movie the pointer, but you can't actually interact with anything to fix the problem. Nothing brings it out of this state. We're not terribly experienced with Macs (new owner) and also snowed in to boot.
Has anybody encountered problems like this before? How do I fix this freeze?

My suggestion with a new Mac that is having those problems is to take it back to the Apple Store and ask them to fix it. Beside allowing them to solve the problem that will also give them the chance to document the problem with your Mac just in case it should happen again.

  • Brand new iMAC keeps hanging

    Hi All
I received my brand new iMAC today - having never had a MAC anything before - decided to switch as fed up of hanging, viruses etc on PCs and also need more multimedia options.
Have set it all up it keeps hanging - for no reason i click on force quit and sometimes it will and sometimes it won't even do that - I am totally confused it has done it to me on MAC Office, iCalc, i photos, i tunes etc etc
Do i have a dud machine am i doing something wrong???? Please help.
    Cheers

    Kazzaboobers,
Welcome to the forum. Chances are you don't have a dud. In case you haven't read the manual I would recommend doing so before playing with your machine, you will be surprised what you learn.
Also when you mention the machine is hanging please describe with a little more detail so we can understand exactly what you mean.
You are covered by 90 days for free telephone support, if the problem persists take advantage of the support and give Apple a call. In the rare event you did get a dud they will replace the machine within 14 days of purchase.
Last IMHO it is a good idea to get AppleCare, this gives you 3 years of phone support and an additional 2 years of warranty. You can find it online (Amazon for example) for less than Apple charges.

  • Brand new i7 keeps freezing

I have had my brand new imac for less than a week, and it keeps freezing up at least 2 to 3 times a day while using Aperture 3 free trial or just using Safari. I have to shut it off completely using the power button. What should I do?

Shouldn't need to on a brand new machine, but try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
If that didn't help try a new post in the Intel-based iMac forum.
This forum is for the much older iMac G4's.

  • Why is my brand new iMac 27' display dark?

I just bought a brand new iMac and this is what the screen looks like:
    at full brightness:
    http://uploadphotos.co/images/17459272055549859163.jpg
At lowest brightness the glitch is not even visible:
    http://uploadphotos.co/images/91589219794648838918.jpg
I've taken screenshots and the darkening/glitch doesn't appear in the screenshots so it must be the display itself.
It's the brand new 3.4 ghz intel core i7...
Is there a firmware update or something for this?
Ie, is it a known issue or do I just have a deffective display?
Thanks in advance for any help.

It may be that if you call Apple Customer Support, the Tech may be able to give you a "fix" over the phone or at least help you diagnose the problem.  If you have to ship it back, try to arrange with Apple to have a delivery service (i.e. UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.) pick up the computer at your home with insured shipping both ways.
Try to work with the Apple Customer Support.

  • My brand new iMac keeps dropping wifi connections

At least 2-3 times daily my brand new Imac drops the connection to my home network- I have tried to reboot my airport extreme- my ipad and iphone and nest thermostat do not have these issues of dropped connections.  As soon as I click the pale wireless signal at the top of the imac, it finds my home network and joins again, but it is a drag to have to redo this every time I want to stream music around the house or check my mail. Any Ideas?  All of my updates are current.  Thanks

This has helped some although, unfortunately, not everybody:

  • Brand new iPod keeps freezes all the time, Why?

The problem started early this year with my old iPod classic (couple years old) was beginning to freeze all the time so I just thought it was time to get a new one so I did but the same probably happened straight away and just just died after 2 weeks of constant resting so I got a brand new replacement and the same thing is happening to this one too, my question is why does this still happen and how to stop it?

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care, get a case number and keep it handy.
