Why does my computer hang when starting up?

Moc Pro 8 core '09 OS X 10.7. Computer was shut down and will not leave the apple spinning gray wheel screen to start fully. Cannot back either. Disk utility says everything's fine...but it isn't. Host cpu cannot index drive when used as a target.

I got the Time Mchine to start and it's telling me that it will take 225 days to back up 231 GB of data. ??????
What can I do to back up this drive???

Why does my iPad hang when writing an email?  When I'm done with the email, I can't send it out and have to re-boot the iPad. This happens if the time to compose email exceeds 10 to 15 minutes.

Shut down all programs that are running in the background.
    1. Double-click the Home button to see Apps in background
    2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close program
    4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo
Suggest you perform Step 1 to 3 at the end of every day.

  • Why does the server hang while starting up or the "csdb recover" hang when it is run?

Sometimes after iPlanet Calendar Server crashes, the server hangs during
    startup or the csdb
utility hangs when I execute the recover
    command.
    <P>
One possible solution is to delete all of the .share
files in the same directory as the
Calendar Server database. In most cases, the server will successfully start up
    again.

When you start up in Safe Mode various things aren't loaded at startup, Bob.
Have a thinbk about which of the following may be involved in your own case:
It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
It runs only Apple-installed startup items (some of the items in /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems - and different than login items).
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts .
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501.
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger only: It disables any Login Items.

Have a look at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464 for some more possibilities.
You may find it worth while using System Prefernces/Accounts to creat a new admin user account and see if the problem persists with it. THis may help you narrow down the problem further.

  • Why does my computer freeze when updateing if i have enough disk space and no disk repairs are needed?

I have problems updating my softwarebecause my computer freezes when it restarts to install. I have enough disk space and I checked for disk repairs and everthing is ok. Still can't update and not my cumputer is taking longer to turn on. There is an earth blinking then i get the apple logo blinking before it turns on and this takes close to 5 minutes.

When you say, "disk repairs" are you referiring to permissions or verifying the disk because clearly there's a problem.
Boot from your install disc, run Disk Utilty to "verify" and if necessary repair the startup disk. (Not Verify Disk Permissions).

  • Why does my computer freeze when Firefox is open and I start AutoCAD 2011?

I have been able to replicate this issue on 2 machines now. If I open Firefox 6 on my Windows XP Machine and then try to start AutoCAD 2011 the whole computer will freeze and I am required to use the power button to restart the computer. If I open AutoCAD 2011 first and then open Firefox 6 the computer does not freeze.

Maybe a conflict with DLLs that both programs use and AutoCAD needs its own version that is located in the AutoCAD folder. If Firefox is started first then an older version located elsewhere may be loaded that cause AutoCAD to crash or hang.

  • Why does InDesign CS5 hang when packaging files?

When ever I go to "package" a file, it gets to about 95% complete and hangs. Although the file and all associated fonts and images does appear to have been packaged, I have to force-quit and re-start indesign. I'm on a Mac using OS X 10.6.8.

When it hangs, run Activity Monitor, select InDesign, and run Sample Process. You'll get a report. Upload it to http://pastebin.com/.
Then, chose View > Send Signal: Abort (SIGABRT). You'll get a crash report. Upload that to http://pastebin.com, too.
Post both URLs here, we'll tell you why it hung.

  • Why does my computer hang?

I have an older iBook G4, and I'm using 10.5.8.  Recently, I've noticed that when surfing on the net, whether in Firefox or Safari, the computer has begun to hang a lot.  In Safari, for example, once I click on a link, I get the blue progress line up to about "http://" and then it stops for about 10 to 15 seconds.  The page will then begin to load slowly.  In Firefox, the timing is about the same, but I don't get any blue progress line, of course.  Any hints?

Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (Select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your Mac OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Once you have done this, start up normally and again repair permissions using Disk Utility on your internal hard drive. (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)

  • Why does my computer restart when trying to print? OSX 10.8.3 epson 2200

I seem to have a problem on my macpro 3,1 3ghz, osx10.8.3 computer when i try to print. When clicking print in any program, it will automatically restart my computer. I've tried resetting the printer settings in system preferences, and when clicking plus to add the printer, it will restart again. The printer is an epson 2200.
I've downloaded the huge printers driver files again, and still nothing. Also tried to fix permissions and that didnt help.
Everything was working fine printing before osx 10.8.3.
    Any help would be great.

On the phone today with Senior Apple Tech guys for ovber an hour. I have a case number. They said they hope to have something by Saturday.
I will keep this forum posted if and when I get anything.
In the meantime USB is working just fine.
BTW, spoke with 2 Epson techs and they both said basically talk to Apple, and as far as they knew Apple wasn't supporting Fireire any longer.
It is true that the new machines do not have FW ports. Never the less, the printers were all fine on 10.8.2 and FW so obviously there was a slipup somewhere.
I have had Macs since day one. I consult quite a few photographers and architects on their computers.
In the last several years there have been very few problems, and none that I recall that brought down the whole system.
The old days, yes, but this really startled me. To say nothing of the promised print job I was starting!
Keep the faith that Apple will fix this, and quickly!

  • Why does biobench freeze sometimes when starting to accuire data?

  • Why does LabVIEW sometimes hang when DLL loads into memory?

I'm calling a third party DLL from LabVIEW 2010.  LV occassionally hangs (Not Responding) when either loading the DLL into memory or when closing my main VI.  When it doesn't hang, it communicates with the DLL seamlessly.  When I try to build an Application (exe), LV always hangs during the build at the point that it is saving the main VI (the scroll on the builder moves until it says "Saving main.vi").  Any insight into what needs to be done to the DLL (or VI) to resolve this issue?

What does the DLL do? One cause of this could be to try to load/unload other DLLs in PROCESS_ATTACH or PROCESS_DETACH of DLLMain. Microsoft has in many places said that doing this is highly unsafe and asking for all kinds of troubles, since the DLL loading is not fully reentrant.
Another possibility would be incorporation of ActiveX components that use some form of RPC mechanisme to communicate with out of process ActiveX/OLE components. The necessary RPC proxy hooks into the calling processes message loop and that is a delicate piece of code in LabVIEW. Even when the DLL does not use ActiveX itself, it might employ some message hooking on its own and mess up things in a way that Windows and/or LabVIEW get confused.

  • Why does my computer freeze when I try and print a pdf?

I have a new computer with Windows 7 64 bit. It seemed that suddenly i developed this problem when trying to print a pdf file with Adobe X. Everything would look like it was going fine, but when the print download screen popped up, it would not download the pdf file and my computer froze. I have to manually shut down my computer to unfreeze it. I have tried to print using an earlier version of Adobe (Adobe 9), tried a different printer, tried printing as an image, or print as a file. Nothing works. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I had a similar problem after upgrading to Windows 7. The problem seemed to be that there was a dialog box that opened
that was not visible on the screen and it was blocking the print completion. Try this. Open the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences and clear the field "Rely on system fonts only, do not use document fonts." When I did that it solved my problem.
The unseen dialog box seems to be the fault of Windows 7, in my opinion.

  • Why does the computer reboot when I plug in my creative ZEN?

I have used this mp3 player in computers before. I am on a new computer. I installed the creative hardware, but the second I plug my mp3 player into the computer it reboots and won't load up until I unplug it again. I know it's not an issue with the USB port because I tried more than one and checked to make sure they worked with other things. Why won't the computer read the mp3 player without restarting?

    More information:
The last event before it shuts down:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000050 (0xb5a9f897, 0x0000000, 0xf89788e4, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini08009-09.dmp.
Can I stop this "bugcheck" from happening again?

  • Why does my computer freeze when I leave it sitting on for more than an hour?

If I leave my computer on for an extended amount of time with it closed, the computer will not light up as I open it up or if I punch the keys.  I can only see the slender light in the front right that has a slow flash.  To turn it on I have to hold the power button until I don't see the flash and then power it back on. Sometimes this does not work and I need to force it off again.  Has anyone had this issue?  Does anyone know what this is?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previous Sh' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
