Why does my ethernet connection hate me?

I have had my MacBook Pro at school all summer, connecting to the internet with an ethernet cord with no problems. Two weeks ago out of nowhere I couldn't connect to the internet anymore. I have tried everything it seems. When I go to System Preferences- Network- it says Ethernet is Connected. If I open Safari it says "You are not connected to the internet." If I click on Network Diagnostics from that Safari page; Ethernet, Network Settings, and ISP all have green lights, but Internet and Server have the red lights and say Failed.
My old PowerBook G4 connects to the internet in another room in my apartment, but if I plug in my new MacBook Pro in in that other room it still doesn't work.
Any suggestions?

This started happening to me out of the blue a few weeks ago as well. I cannot understand what is going on. I use the machine at work and have it connected to the internet through both ethernet and wifi, but one day, I started loosing my internet connection when using the ethernet cable (the machine seems to prefer using ethernet over wifi), and I had to start using the wifi only.
After having troubleshooted in the same physical location (with the same cable) for a while, I came to the following strange results:
- After a fresh reboot, the machine uses ethernet with no problems (DHCP).
- If I take out the network cable, wait, then plug it back in, I'm not getting on the internet (default internal 169.x.x.x IP-address)
- If I turn the ethernet port OFF (with the cable still in) and turn it back on, I get on the internet fine (getting a proper 192.x.x.x IP-address immediately)
- ..but if I take the cable out again and plug it back in, I go back to the 169.x.x.x IP-address
This is really, really weird.. because if I then choose "DHCP with fixed IP-address" and just enter something random for the last octet/digits (like; 192.168.1.137) .. it works just fine!
I honestly don't understand diddly squat of what is going on here, but I'm leaving Norway to spend a week at a giant conference in San Jose in a little over a week from now, and I REALLY need my MBP to work properly then!)

    It should. It will only respond if there's something on the card for it to respond to, so do you have pics on the card?
    And if it's messing up; try giving the iPad a restart. Hold down the sleep and home keys, past when you see hte red power down slider and until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and try again. That can clear up any glitches on the device itself.

    I'm having the same problem too. I cannot sync or update over wireless or wired connections ever since I installed the most recent iTunes update. iTunes goes through the complete OS 5.0.1 download only to tell me the connection has timed out just when it seems ready to install. I've since reinstalled iTunes, I've ejected and done hard restarts on both my problem devices. I've disabled anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall. No change in outcome except that, after doing all this, my final attempt to simply sync my 1st Gen iPad led to iTunes crashing and being automatically closed by windows just before finishing the final step. Is this a cruel joke, because I'm certain I can hear iTunes laughing at me for wasting so much time on this.

    Hi -I was having the above problems on both my ipad and iphone,  and I trawled the internet for hours and hours trying to find a solution to this.....tried  resetting both devices,signing back in to the mail app, and did a full reset of both iphone and ipad., I removed the email account from both devices too.. I knew that the problem occurred after receiving an email- as it happened whilst opening the email- you might not have realised that's what it was at the time?.... I tried deleting the email from both phone and ipad, and hotmail was working fine on a webpage,it was JUST the mail app that was giving the  error messages..... I was receiving the above message and ' cannot send mail- an error occurred while sending this message'  and ' cannot get mail- the connection to the server has failed' then I suddenly realised that even though I had deleted the mail from both ipad and iphone the message was still in trash, so I emptied trash and made sure the mail was completely removed from my hotmail account ANYWHERE and then the problem disappeared.....I think an email I received was maybe corrupt- I hope this at least helps someone and saves you the hassle it caused me!

    my new mac air is only a week old - it was working perfectly til yesterday now it won't hold a wireless connection.  won't even hold with an ethernet connection to mobile phone.

        I regret to learn of the issues, funeralguy77! Lets figure it out together. Can you try to connect another device to the same WiFi connection. Does it connect? Have you tried to delete/forget the connection and trying again?

    I attached my program and my output. Please bear with me for the long output. My question here is why do the connections remain even though I closed the resultsets. I need to reuse my prepared statements, but don't want to keep the oracle sessions open. Is this possible? What do I need to do?
    If you notice in the program, I have executed the query to find the number of open sessions 5 times.
    1) After creating the connections
    2) After creating the prepared statements
    3) After executing them
    4) After getString on the resultSets
    5) After closing the resultsets.
    And the sessions are still there even is Step 5 :-(

    Why do the connections stay open? Because you haven't closed them.
    You answered your own question: obviously closing the ResultSet is NOT the same thing as closing the connection.
    When you do a query, you want to get the connection, statement, and result set, load the data from the result set into an object or data structure, and then immediately close them all again in reverse order of creation. You want to keep the scope as narrow as possible. You want to use a connection pool to keep the cost of obtaining a connection down. You should leave caching of the PreparedStatements to the JDBC driver.

  • Why does my printer connected through time capsule only print once after powering on then never again?

    Hey,
    I have a TimeCapsule which is logging in to my wireless network (i.e. it's not extending it, neither is it serving its own network). I have a Brother HL-2030 connected to it (via USB). I have two issues:
    * the printer will only print directly after plugging in the USB cable to the TC, but only once. Subsequent attempts to print would not succeed. Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable will help, again, only once. The printer works flawlessly when directly connected to my MBP.
    * the TimeCapsule is not found by AirPort utility, and neither am I able to apply a software update to it. Configuring it to extend my WLAN does not work reliably.
    Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong here?

    Thanks for the hint. I had thought about that, too. It was the easiest to configure the network this way as the modem is provider pre-configured. But I need to see if I can get to bridged mode. There's an additional problem with the location of the device in the building...
    The printer had worked through the TC when it was the router (with my previous provider) and served the WLAN. Thus I don't see where the difference should be, particularly as I believe the printer is served via IP and thus it should IMHO not matter if the TC serves the WLAN + device or only the device.

  • Why does Home share Connection drop every night?

    Hello all!
    I have three Apple Tv 3's hooked up, 2 wired, the other one wireless. I can stay connected to home sharing all day on all three of them without issue. But for some reason, every morning they have all three lost connection to home sharing. Even restarting the device does not reconnect it. All I can do is exit out of itunes and restart it. Then the home sharing is connected again and I can access my files.
    This wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just me, but my wife does not want to have to fool with this every morning to play videos for our daughter. I was using Boxee Boxes prior to this and they worked flawlessly.
    The computer does not go to sleep or hibernate and neither do the apple tv's. I have tested with firewall and anti-virus disabled. Called Apple support and they are clueless. Any ideas?

    Two things jump into my mind: poor WiFi signal strength on the desktop PC or a dirty OS installation on the desktop PC. I'm quite sure that this has nothing to do with the cisco VPN client itself.
    Assuming that you reach your remote workspace through the cisco VPN client it might also be that the remote part (the VPN concentrator) gets congested and drops your connection but than other employees would complain as well (can be checked with your ICT guys).
    The thing is: when you lose Internet connection on your laptop while surfing a web site and connection comes back again within no time you won't notice anything. If the same happens to a system constantly receiving encrypted packets and some are missing the VPN client will drop the connection. Completely different protocols (http/ipsec) that are differently prone to packet drops...

  • Why does datasocket not connect

    I programmatically assign datasocket URLs to multiple indicators in a VI that I load in a SubPanel control.  The first time I load the VI and assign URLs I have no problem.  The second time I load the VI only the first indicator successfully activates.  The second indicator remains in a connecting state.  Why?  I am repeating the identical process when I load the VI into the SubPanel control.  I've enclose a PPT showing the DataSocket Server diagnostics.
    Offline means I have not started sending data to the URL.  Online means I'm already sending data to the URL.
    The Probe values are from a property node for the indicator within a while loop.  The last probe is the iteration value of the loop.  When the code is 'Active' the loop is quit.

    Hello - I have an E72.
    In my connections settings, I have GPRS, my "work" WLAN and my "home" WLAN in my "Internet" destinations. They are in the following order:
    1) Home WLAN
    2) Work WLAN
    3) Voadfone GPRS
    Internet is set as my "default". All the connections work fine (that is, I can browse the web with all of them).
    My issue is that I would expect, that when I am home and the E72 sees that my home WLAN is available, it would use that rather than VF GPRS but it does not seem to.
    When I look at the "Connectivity Manager", GPRS is active. My questions are:
    1) How to get the E72 to follow the priorities I have set (Home WLAN, Work WLAN, GPRS)
    2) How do I manually "force" the E72 to use an designated connection (without browsing the web) if I need to...

    Same problem here.
    I got 4 access points defined in my "Menu/ Ctrl panel/ Settings/ Connection/ Destinations/ Internet" section which is set as my default connection to the internet. 3 of my access points are frequently used WiFi networks (priorities 1,2 and 3), the 4th one is my Mobile Internet (priority 4).
    I have 2 e-mail accounts configured on my phone - Yahoo and Gmail. The problem is that I couldn't find any way to configure my accounts so that Mobile Internet connects ONLY when none of the 3 WiFi access points is available. Various configurations led to either ALWAYS using Mobile Internet when connecting (sending/ receiving) or not connecting at all if not in one specific WiFi network.
    I can't really get how the "priorities" work.
    Could anyone help me/ us on this matter?

  • Why does my wifi connection keep dropping in and out?

    I have Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The wifi is connected to the wireless router and is the only pc of equipment that is. Full bars. Yet the note keeps dropping the wifi saying it has authenticity errors? My previous cell had absolutely no issues. And its a new router.

        I regret to learn of the issues, funeralguy77! Lets figure it out together. Can you try to connect another device to the same WiFi connection. Does it connect? Have you tried to delete/forget the connection and trying again?
