Why does my iBook panic?

My iBook has recently started to panic regularily/randomly. Sometimes it happens during start up, sometimes it logs in and runs for a while, nothing in particular seems to trigger it. I suspect that the RAM or HD is starting to fail, but they both passed the Hardware Test, so I dunno. RAM was upgraded two years ago to the maximum, but computer worked fine for a long time with this configuration. I don't think any settings were changed, but I can't be sure because my mom has had the computer. Seems not to fail when I run from CD, but that could just be luck since sometimes it works for a while?

It has also, on some occasions, shown me the "where's the startup disk" icon when booting from the internal, although after a moment it seems to catch it.
You may need to reselect the startup drive. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Startup Disk. Select startup volume and restart.
Starting to wonder if some connection or other is making the drives disappear momentarily and causing the machine to freeze, but I don't know how I would test that theory, much less fix it.
You may be right. I suggest Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least Ten seconds... (But can take Longer)... until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons

Why does my ibook HD show a different name when accessing over network?

I am including the details below for some industrious soul to peruse. In a nutshell, I have renamed my old computers internal drive (no problem), but when I connect to it via network from my new computer it still comes up as the old HD name instead of the new name that I gave it.
Is this normal to have the name of the HD sitting on the desktop not be the same as the name seen when connecting over my LAN? Or am I seeing the beginnings of trouble? Permission repairs don't come up with anything, nor does Disk Utility.

After buying a new iMac, I decided to rename my ibook's drive from Macintosh HD to iBook HD-- so I wouldn't confuse myself when networkign the two together. Seems I have confused the computers, however. After renaming my ibook HD, when I connect to it over my network I see the following under My Network:

TBB-ibook-G4
Thomas Bailey 2's iBook G4 (apparently this comes from an administrator account I temporarily created and then later deleted)
When I click on the first computer name, I get the Connect to Server dialog Box, where I put in my main admin user login info. I then get a shoice of volumes to mount, which shows my admin user name and the old name of the hard drive (Macintosh HD).

I recently acquired an ibook g3 466 se with a DVD drive. Unfortunately, whenever I try to load OS 10 off of a cd or DVD, the system crashes. To test the hard drive, I installed ubuntu and that worked fine. So why doesn't it boot with os 10? Please help me!!

Grey DVDs may not work with your iBook because they are connected with other machines.
Do you meet the system requirements ?
128 MB RAM for OSX 10.3 / 256 MB for OSX 10.4
Installer program will not load if you have got a smaller amount of ram.
Install CD/ DVD OK?
Severe scratches might be a problem.

We're not 100% positive about this and are waiting for absolute confirmation, but at this point, it looks as though the Flashback trojan does not affect older Macs with PowerPC processors (such as your iBook).

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

Why does my iBook not have a file size on the iBookstore?

I apologise if this has already been answered, however, I could not find an answer anywhere. Basically, I submitted a children's iBook (The Tale Of Blob-Ba-Cus) to the iBookstore in June. In the section on the iBookstore where is says author, publisher, category etc. there is no file size listed. My book was created with iBooks Author and I submitted it through iTunes Producer. I never came across a field in the metadata for file size. I just presumed maybe it would appear automatically once submitted. Did I miss something?

I noticed my ibook app only display free books. Could this be because my apple ID was registered under Malaysia?

Apple can only sell content in iBooks that the publishers have allowed them to - if they havn't been granted permission then they can only 'sell' free content. So if you are in one of those countries where there is only free content then you will need to buy and use a different ebook content provider (the terms of use of the stores say you can only purchase/download from your own country's stores). Do you have Kindle (Amazon), Nook, or other ebook retailers in your country ?

Why does my iBooks keep closing?

I'm about half way into a new book and now it keeps freezing and then closing on me. Doesn't seem to do it with my other books. What can I do to resolve the issue?

1. Double-click the Home button to see all Inactive Apps
2. Hold the Apps down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
3. Tap the minus sign to close App
4. Reset iPad. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider

Why does my ibooks app show the remaining pages in the book instead of the remaining pages of the chapter?

The book that I'm currently reading always showed the remaining pages in the chapter. But as of this morning, the "... pages left" item on the down right side of my screen doesn't show the remaining pages in the chapter anymore, but the remaining pages of the book.
Was there a setting I accidentally changed? Because I can't remember changing anything. Anyone knows how this behaviour is triggered? And more important, how it can be changed back.

Not positive here but it almost sounds like your sign in was up and your wife used the computer and clicked on different sites that showed up on your sign in, Truth be told it was an accident that both you and her were unaware of. This is the reason that we have one sign in that we both use and when it gets cluttered I simply create a folder and put her stuff in it that way it isn't in my way.

Me too, ipad mini can't get YouTube app to function via the official app and the same error message," ...tap to retry", but to no avail. The app launches but it will not allow me to sign in. The drop arrow just tilts up and down and ...nothing. I can still access YouTube through Safari browser but strange, I can't find a solution to the app not opening or being able to sign in on either ipad mini or phone even though they are up to date apps.

Why does the highlight feature seem not to work about 1/2 the time in various ibooks. I'm trying to take notes and about 50 pages into a book the highlight feature stopped working.

I've long noted that the highlight feature in ibooks is clunky and fairly limited in it's note-taking features, but the last two books I've read I've had trouble getting the highlight feature to work at all. I click and drag over text and nothing happens. I try with command depressed and nothing happens. If I double click a bunch it will eventually highlight one word, but nothing more. What gives?
Also, not to be snarky, but why can't I seem to find a button that would read text to speach for me? How do blind people use this service, or illiterate, or dyslexic, or people like myself who can learn far more from hearing then from reading.
And why does the text of a book often render so that it's haf cut off of the page?

There is a button for speech within the iBooks menu. Edit > Speech. You might be better off buying Audiobooks. You can get them from the iTunes Store or Audible.com

I recently got iPad (Third Generation) because I was excited about the possibilities of reading so many books through the iBooks app. However, I have recently discovered that there are very few books on offer in the Nigeria Store - and they are mostly books available in the public domain.
For a couple of days, I thought it was a general iBooks problem (i.e. iBooks did not have so many books as I had originally thought) - but then I visited the US Store through a friend's account (who also lives in Nigeria) - and realized that a greaaat deal of books are available in the US Store (and other stores).
Why does iBooks offer very few books in Nigeria? Is there any way to work around this restriction? How can this complaint be forwarded to those who make decisions at iTunes?
